If I build a new city, does the Great Wall expand to fit the new city in it too?

I wish it would. it looks cool to have a like 20city wall. Are there mods or tweaks that make it expand?

No. Does original Great Wall in China expand too? It is not right?

if you really wanted it to expand, go into WB and tell the city to unbuild and than rebuild and it will expand to cover everything

Well, the cities outside the great wall in RL dont protect against Barbarians. If they do in Civ4, then the wall has to exist. If the wall wont expand, why do the cities outside the wall get the no Barb bonuses?

I don't know. For me the implementation of Great Wall is good already. Maybe news spread among barbarians: "They build Great Wall and nothing left but stone to raze... Leave them alone".

I actually made it a point to build the Wall after reading this threade, I completed it with about four barb swordsman poised to attack to rather undermanned cities (phew!!! nick of time type thing) then the wall goes up etc and boots them out.

I think the wall makes life easier if you want to be a builder or peacemongerer but I think it shorts you somewhat on the warmongering side since you have to then actually seek out the barbs. My game is still going on and I'm actually trying out this "peace" thing. Not sure about it yet.

Or, maybe it is a good idea:
- Cities within Great Wall immune to barbarian or enemies attack.
- We can leave above cities without guard. It is only necessary to put guard when we choose civic that give +1 "happy face" for each guard stationary at city.
- Great Wall is not immune to air fighter unit (including helicopter).
- Cities outside Great Wall is not affected by Great Wall (not immune to barbarian attack).

Cities on the same continent get the benefit of the Great Wall regardless of the walls location. You could build it when you only have one city, but every other city you build or capture on that continent is safe from the barbs.

I know and I am happy with that ;) .

I am only thinking alternative rules for Great Wall about inside and outside advantages or disadvantages.

i have a story to tell about the great wall.

i played rome and expanded quickly.
when i finished the gr8 wall i had about 4 cities.
unfortunately my first expansion didnt meet the cultural borders of the 1st city and didnt even meet the ones of city no. 3

plus, the city i build the wall was a coastal one.
as a consequence the great wall was only 4 squares large, ending in the water. :D :D :D and that didnt look good at all !!!

There's a wonderful Great Wall somewhere in the "Funny Screenshots" thread: if memory serves me rightly, it's on two edges of each of two separate tiles !

Try reading the Civlopedia for information. It explains how the actual Great Wall was a failure and was primarily used to slow down raiders so to discourage them because it would not be as profitable. I guess you can rationalize it by saying that barbarians don't feel the need to invade because they could lose more than they could gain. Although in the end it is a game so it shouldn't matter :-P

Great walls are not to stop them getting in. But to stop them getting out with all the booty!!

This is in real life of course. With Hadrians wall also in england. It discouraged barbarian raids because they would not get their gear over the wall and would have to go through a guarded gate.

Also the romans could tax anyone going in and out. Wonder if the chinese did similar things.

It is a game though, but its a cool feature in game. My latest game the chinese built it :D
