View Full Version : Worst streak of luck in a game ever!

1. Alone-on-a-small-half-tundra-island start at Monarch level... not good.

2. I lost both of my axemen attacking a barbarian archer on a flat grassland tile next to my capital (probabilities of success 95.4% and then 98.6%). (Fortunately I was able to finish off the weakened guy with my original exploring warrior, who had just been sitting in the capital since 3000 BC... but it sorta eliminated my real military!)

3. I founded a brand new 3rd city right before I discovered Islam. I had troops nearby placed strategically so that as soon as any barbs came out of the fog of war, I could get them before they got to the city. WELL, suddenly a barbarian HORSE ARCHER pops in 2 spaces away from my new city... at the same time as Islam is founded there! I can't catch him since he has 2 movement points and nothing but flat grassland between him and the Islam holy city. It is razed the very next turn.

Incidentally, I've never seen a barbarian horse archer before. There was no barbarian city on the island. Did I hit the (wrong) jackpot?

4. I spend 40-some turns building the statue of liberty, and with 5 turns left, Hannibal asks me to convert to Hinduism, the religion of 4 out of my 5 opponents. My military was very weak, and I was afraid that if I refused I'd get attacked. So I convert. I'm playing as Elizabeth, who is not Spiritual. One turn of anarchy. Then when I'm 1 turn away from the Statue of Liberty: "Hannibal has completed the Statue of Liberty!"

5. Alexander surprises me with sudden war (I know, he does it all the time, but it was early even for him!). He lands a wimpy force that I laugh at... until I realize it's right next to the only city I forgot to station a military unit in. It is protected by one, very brave, Scout with 1 Str and 1/2 XP. (Okay, I admit to stupidity instead of bad luck here!)

Nevertheless, I'm hanging in there! I managed to take back the city that Alexander captured, and the other 4 Civs like me a lot now and trade stuff to me because I'm Hindu.

Yeah, I was tempted a couple of times! Turns out I got an easy diplomatic victory by beelining to Mass Media. Everyone was Hindu except for Alexander, and he had the most land & population (and thus would be my UN opponent). He was hated by everyone because of his religion and the fact that he declared war on me twice.

If you settle on the ruins, you gain the holy city back IMHO.

edit : seems it doesn't work :(

Really? Wow, I never knew that. That is pretty cool.

i never tried (i hate my cities getting captured anyway), but IMHO that's what the ruins are for.

What happens if someone loses thier holy city and then on a raid or something, the ruins are pillaged? What happens then? Does the holy city go to some random civ or is it lost forever?

I did settle on top of the ruins, but the holy city did not come back. Maybe they changed that with Warlords or something... donno.
