View Full Version : City art styles (discussion and ideas)
Chamaedrys Oct 09, 2006, 04:14 PM Ok, this thread is about new city styles for this mod.
Which sorts of city art styles should be in this mod? Which civs could/should share the same art, how should these cities look like....
Please post your ideas (and maybe some pics)
Ploeperpengel Oct 09, 2006, 05:25 PM Glad you opened this thread and welcome:)
PL already made some awesome models for the woodelves, we're just waiting for him to post them and create a new cityart out of them. And works on High and Darkelves.
Cathay and Nippon will use the asian style from warlords.
Tilea can use the greco-roman art from there.
Araby and Ind could use your new mideastern art.
Empire, Bretonnia, Estalia(Spain) can use standard european art.(Maybe we can mix it with FFH Order for the first 2 and give Estalia a mix of european and mideastern style)
Chaos maybe can utilize th FFH veil for now allthough ideas are allways welcome here too.
Dwarves(Maybe Kilmorph?)
No Art at all available we have yet for:
Orcs and Goblins, Ogre Lords later too(could be something like the new zulu barracks, round tents with skulls and paintings as decor)
Tombkings will need an egyptian style(but symbols of death instead of ankhs)
Sylvania is definitly dark gothic(veil can be placeholder)
Lizardmen, Amazons is aztec-incastyle
Kislev needs something russian style(Kreml, orthodox churches etc. are good inspiration)
Norse is vikings of course(vanilla palace fits the style)
Apart from cityart we need unique gfx for buildings like palaces, barracks, castles etc. that should then fit to the cityart.
Chamaedrys Oct 10, 2006, 04:35 AM Ok. now I have some information.
I think we could recycle some European stuff for Kislev and mix some orthodox buildings in.
Ploeperpengel Oct 10, 2006, 08:52 AM yep agreed.
Psychic_Llamas Oct 10, 2006, 11:47 PM i agree with Ploe with all his suggestions:)
Sorry Ploe, i got side tracked and forgot to post my Woodelf nifs. im working on it now:) i will also ge t screenies of the highelf buildings up:)
Chamaedrys Oct 12, 2006, 12:55 PM Ok, I have just finished the tent set:

What do you think?
Arexack_heretic Oct 12, 2006, 01:35 PM Can the paving be altered into packed dirt also?
Nice. I like the coocking fires. IMO the purple totems are overrepresented.
It is all a bit purple looking, I'm not so keen on that, but maybe others are. :p
Maybe use whalebones etc in the architecture...possibly for their next age?
What is era 3 gonna look like? Pueblo-muerto? :D
Chamaedrys Oct 12, 2006, 02:30 PM whalebones are a good idea. I'll replace some totems with whalebones.
But what do you mean with purple?
Arexack_heretic Oct 12, 2006, 03:03 PM Just the patterns painted on the tent skins. They are purple.
Is the positioning of buildings fixed, or can you scatter them around more chaotically?
Maybe have a some circles of tents with big bonfires in the center clearing...
:D
Can you do nothing about the pavingstones? It looks weird.
Animations?
snotlings and boars running through the 'streets'. :)
Chamaedrys Oct 12, 2006, 03:53 PM Just the patterns painted on the tent skins. They are purple.
Yes, maybe I'll paint some of them black. I think red, black and brown are the only colors for orks (and their friends)

:D
The mechanism is a bit boring: several copies of the same building are placed next to each other.
Can you do nothing about the pavingstones? It looks weird.
tents with totems, hellbards, open fire pits and blood covered obelisks:mad: on a well-made pavement:lol:! That's really very weird. There will be changes made;)
Animations?
snotlings and boars running through the 'streets'. :)
Well, I think the sickness-smog and te unhappiness-fire would be cool for every orc city.
Ploeperpengel Oct 12, 2006, 04:23 PM Fantastic start just the totems are overepresentative yes, good job:)
Psychic_Llamas Oct 13, 2006, 03:33 AM Looking good Cham! i agree, the totems are a bit over powering. but i like it:)
Arexack_heretic Oct 13, 2006, 03:56 AM You might want to leave totems and other obvious (stone) structures for civics buildings.
Did I hear someone say mud-brick huts with thatched roofs for AgeII?
Chamaedrys Oct 13, 2006, 10:03 AM So, I've thrown the totems out and reduced the tribals:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/87027/ork-city.JPG
I think we could use this style for the normal barbs, too
Ploeperpengel Oct 13, 2006, 12:33 PM Perfect let's put it in. I agrre we can use it for normal barbs now but we should diverse it later with another skin maybe. I want Orcs and Gobbos appear different than ordinary barbs. Barbcities could mix with normal ancient builds and tents. Even Mongols built some houses of stone.;) That reminds me that Ungols will be made a full playable civ later in the mod as well. While we now use thm as barbs and merctroops a Mongolian cityart would well fit for them later and now could be used for barbs already.;)
Chamaedrys Oct 13, 2006, 03:12 PM ...and done!
The city set is at the database: http://forums.civfanatics.com/./downloads.php?do=file&id=2978
I'll release the xml and the pavement later.
Ploeperpengel Oct 13, 2006, 04:32 PM Great thx.:)
Btw. I just saw Kael included many nice gfx for buildings, features etc. in FFH 0.16. Some meshes are obviously taken from sid meyers pirates and they really fit well to WH too imo-i.e. the barrow. Would you like to pillage FFH yourself and include the buildings, features step by step or should I upload a collection of new structures with the next upload to choose from? The latter will have the advantage that we can simply update the xml but it will litter the artfolder with lots of unused stuff and of course increase the filesize considerably.
Chamaedrys Oct 14, 2006, 01:13 PM I would prefer the latter method. Maybe you could put it in a separate upload.
Ploeperpengel Oct 14, 2006, 06:53 PM Ok will do but will need some time for it since I'll be moving this week.
Chamaedrys Oct 18, 2006, 03:56 AM I have write a tutorial about "the classic" way of implementing city art.
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=189687
Arexack_heretic Oct 19, 2006, 12:35 PM I saw some nice examples of WH city art in a pdf of the Generals Compendium, campaigns rulebook.
I'll clip some and post them below. Also has nice examples of watchtowers with army specific flavour and other cool stuff. (Such as a skaven skryre tunneller-engine!)
Chamaedrys Oct 20, 2006, 05:31 AM Here is a preview for kislev:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/87027/kislev.JPG
http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/87027/kislev1.JPG
Ploeperpengel Oct 20, 2006, 06:07 AM Nice already:) Maybe a little less red and more white buildings or more color mix generally (add white, türkis, light-blue).
Ploeperpengel Oct 20, 2006, 06:14 AM But the core buildings should stay dark brown wooden buildings and only few colorful dots. Those blue buildings are nice though they could equal the browns in later eras.
Arexack_heretic Oct 20, 2006, 10:04 AM That small castle would do great in other human nations, with small changes made to it.
Empire: red roofs, maybe that white with woodenbeams look for some 2nd floor sections. lots of chimneys.
Vampirecounts: greyslate roofs, bleuer stone walls, spikes on the roofs.
Bretonnia is more elegant than the empire, gothic in a bright sunny way compared to the vampires.
The borderPrinces....not really a nation, but I'd say romanesque in style. (eg round arches, white/cream walls, terracotta tiled roofs.
Probably not for the stone age. ;)
Norse: longhouses and some grass-roofed, later redpainted wooden houses with brown/black roofs.
Ploeperpengel Oct 20, 2006, 10:48 AM Borderprinces won't be a civ.
Btw I'm beginning to get really unhappy about the ancient era. We should rethink exactly what timescale this mod should represent(I suggest the techthread for this). Refering to art only I'm quite certain that age of magic should be the lateartdefine already and ancient the early though but I'm not sure anymore that we really should go back to stoneage though but lets discuss this later first I got to finish the buildingartfolder.
@Chamaedrys
I'll upload the buildingsart in the warlordsrecyclethread.
Chamaedrys Oct 29, 2006, 10:13 AM Kislev city art is out:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/./downloads.php?do=file&id=3337
kislev1.nif for the earlier ages and kislev2.nif for the late game;)
Ploeperpengel Oct 29, 2006, 12:02 PM Looks great now!:)
Psychic_Llamas Oct 29, 2006, 07:35 PM Looking good Chamaedrys!
Sorry i havent been on much, ive been having internet troubles, but i think im getting them sorted :)
Chamaedrys Nov 15, 2006, 01:56 AM Norsca is ready: http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=3622
and Hords of Chaos, too: http://forums.civfanatics.com/./downloads.php?do=file&id=3629
;)
Arexack_heretic Nov 15, 2006, 03:42 AM I like the chaoscity nicely compact. and looking bloody gothic. :)
Ploeperpengel Nov 15, 2006, 05:12 AM Oh yeah:cool:
Psychic_Llamas Nov 19, 2006, 07:09 PM very nice Cham. love the Chaosy one. you put me to shame because i havent done anything in SOOO long.
oh well, im finally free from the bonds of high school, no more studying for me!! :D i still hev yet to graduate though. so i will most likely be able to get back into modding pretty soon, but it may take a while :D
Chamaedrys Nov 21, 2006, 02:24 AM Thanks.:)
I'm very happy with the Chaos, too.
They were much more co-opperative than the Tombkings...
Anyway, the dwarfs are next. I think mines and massive stonebuildings are OK for them.
Arexack_heretic Nov 21, 2006, 03:36 AM and lots of statues of elders.
Psychic_Llamas Nov 23, 2006, 03:29 AM would you like me to post my Dwarf Stronhold gate thingo? we could use that as the palace.
(good luck with the dwarves, ive tryed and theyre impossible to get buildings that dont look tacky 9but thats probably just me :p)
Chamaedrys Nov 23, 2006, 04:04 AM would you like me to post my Dwarf Stronhold gate thingo? we could use that as the palace.

Yeah, post it! I need some inspiration.
Psychic_Llamas Nov 23, 2006, 06:55 PM ok, well, here are all of my modles (i haven done the textures yet, sorry)
Link (http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/71834/Dwarfs.rar)
theyre all Max files, so i hope you can open them.
there are 3 variations of a palace, (i like palace 3 the most)
and a few different 'houses'. feel free to change as you see fit:)
Arexack_heretic Jan 04, 2007, 01:47 PM Hey for those of you that are good at this editing NIFs and such.
I found a nice source of inspirational buildings at Pardulon.com, a producer of resin models.
http://pardulon.com/catalog/index.php/
Arexack_heretic Jan 31, 2007, 11:00 PM kay. bump.
>I am wondering if the game needs to be 'repacked' before new NIFs are used?
>How do you add a shop sign that hinges in the wind?
For Dwarves I'd probably restrict buildings to fortification-like buildings and some macho-hobbit-holesque village-homes (maybe even Cairn-like) for the farmers and such. Dwarves are a grim and pragmatic people.
The only materials worth building with are steel and stone, wood is flimsy and best used to fire up the kiln.
For Orc-town I would like to see a big campfire the size of a building. One could use a scaled-down 'civilunrest' animation.
The current 'hobbit-hole'...that is just a cairn isn't it? Where are the cozy round windows and inviting chestnutwooden door with brass knocker?
Ah , but then the hole isn't cityart.
Psychic_Llamas Sep 13, 2007, 07:49 PM OK, well the good news is im back in Max Mode and i have all my old modles again :D,
the bad news is i dont have any of my old textures or adobe photoshop :( which means i need a free image editor as good as photoshop. does anyone know of one? (I tried GIMP but i cant install it) if all else fails i can use photoshop on my parents computer but thats a real pain.
So, my to do list is:
-do textures for Woodelf city art,
-convert to .dds format,
-port to Civ 4 BTS
-do textures for Highelf city art,
-convert to .dds format,
-port to Civ 4 BTS
-do textures for Dwarf city art,
-convert to .dds format,
-port to Civ 4 BTS
woodelf Sep 13, 2007, 08:14 PM Do you have the actual GIMP d/l? It's a pain to find. I was downloading source code the first time I tried. :(
Try here (http://www.download.com/3120-20_4-0.html?tg=dl-20&qt=GIMP&tag=srch) instead of gimp.org
Ploeperpengel Sep 13, 2007, 10:02 PM If you want to use gimp you'll also need the GTK runtimeenvironment that's next to the gimp download. You need to install the runtime first.
Psychic_Llamas Sep 13, 2007, 10:03 PM Ah, brilliant :D,thanks woodelf, i was also downloading source code :D
i can now get into some REAL texturing :D (after i figure gimp out :p)
Psychic_Llamas Oct 04, 2007, 05:58 AM has anyone seen this forum before? thers some really nice stuff in here, particularly the elven city art (i dont think im going to get mine done any time soon) HERE (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=214401)
and HERE (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=229517) is some more nice city art, im thinking Khemri, Ind, Araby, and lhamia
woodelf Oct 04, 2007, 06:11 AM Yeah, hrochland's elven cityset looks cool.
I'm trying to make an orc set for the Dragonia II mod that would work here if you want it.
There's also a set I made for the Star Wars mod here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=5878147&postcount=64) that could be used, maybe? Desert type civ?
Psychic_Llamas Oct 04, 2007, 06:16 AM that could actually be good for the dwarfs with a reskin.
Ploeperpengel Oct 04, 2007, 09:01 AM Yep will use that. Geomodders collection is already in. Sorry woodelf I don't need further desertcivcitystyle but the models look good.
Psychic_Llamas Oct 04, 2007, 07:16 PM cool :) (i really must DL the warlords version ;) )
