View Full Version : MTDG Cage Match - The Fight for Glory!
Ginger_Ale Oct 09, 2006, 04:04 PM I thought you'd never ask!
Although you'll probably win since you're much better than me.
This is how RegentMan responded when I asked him about the possibility of a cage match in Civ4 between the two MTDG admins (actually, I made up the second sentence :mischief:).
Following in the footsteps of the fabled Civ3 DG Cage Match (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=62057) between donsig and Donovan Zoi, we hope to showcase our Civ4 talent in an awesome PBEM-duel...although we hope to go a bit faster than the Civ3 Cage Match's 200 turns in over 3 years, this cage match will be a duel between two of the best greatest average Civ4 players you will ever see. Complete with playful banter, mimicking taunts, and spoiler threads, you'll want to keep an eye on this (at least until I whoop RegentMan).
So, let the discussion begin - we'll start with a nice, narrow topic:
What settings do you want this game to be on? (this is open to anyone, not just RM)
Let the games begin! :viking:
DaveMcW Oct 09, 2006, 04:32 PM Do you guys have Warlords? It's a lot more interesting when you can vassalize AIs and throw them at each other. :D
Ginger_Ale Oct 09, 2006, 05:07 PM RM does, I don't, so it'll be regular (is it called Vanilla yet?), although pitting AIs against each other as buffers would be quite interesting.
Gogf Oct 09, 2006, 07:54 PM Well, I refer to it as Vanilla now.
Good luck and have funs guys, I'll be watching :).
RegentMan Oct 10, 2006, 12:53 AM Woooooooooooot!
Although Ginger_Ale's pitiful taunting and misquoting is going to be his downfall. Do you think you're all that? I think not, my young apprentice. Soon I will humbly defeat you and your cocky ways. Bring it on, East Coaster!
As for the game parameters I think some AIs will be fun; like in the original cage match. Three AIs gets us a small map; five a standard. Those are the two sizes I'll play on. A pangaea map would be best. Barbs are scary :scared: . We can let the people decide who we shall rule. That, or pick them ourselves (random would be fun too). Wherever we shall play, I'd love to see some outside thoughts and insights. Pick a side. Root for the longbow!
Ginger ---> :spank: <--- RegentMan
Robi D Oct 10, 2006, 04:09 AM Do you guys have Warlords? It's a lot more interesting when you can vassalize AIs and throw them at each other. :D
I will show restraint not use the words vassal and regentman in the same sentance (except this one). I would like to see a small balanced map, we don't want to many AI gettting the the way of you two taking shreads out of each other.
Also us picking your civs for you would be fun.
Karl Townsend Oct 10, 2006, 04:31 AM can we also compete in this match
so we can kick admins ass
or be allys with one admin
Ginger_Ale Oct 10, 2006, 05:00 AM can we also compete in this match
so we can kick admins ass
or be allys with one admin
Ah, but that would ruin the fun of seeing one of us victor over the other.
A small map with 3 AIs would be nice, I'm all up for random AIs. Pangea's pretty good too so it won't take forever to meet each other (and subsequently declare war :p). Shall we just go with a randomly generated map or do you want someone to make/tweak it?
BCLG100 Oct 10, 2006, 07:56 AM if you going for 3 AI's you should have all 5 mtdg teams with you and RM random assigned one of the teams :)
Mauer Oct 10, 2006, 01:10 PM I'd say let the commoners, such as I, decide which civs you are. Random could turn out to be unbalanced for one of you. Although I think RM should get the stronger civ....you know as a handicap...... :p
Ginger_Ale Oct 10, 2006, 01:35 PM I'd say let the commoners, such as I, decide which civs you are. Random could turn out to be unbalanced for one of you. Although I think RM should get the stronger civ....you know as a handicap...... :p
Letting you guys decide in some polls what civs we will be is fine - RM, you up to it? You can also vote RM to have a better civ, because, as we all know, his skills can't quite compare to mine (don't tell him I said that :D).
RegentMan Oct 10, 2006, 02:11 PM As you know, I prefer a random map. I don't think we'll need a map maker.
Yep, I'm all for letting the group pick our civs. Although don't give me the "stronger" civ just because. It was just one game... :(
Besides, with Ginger's lack of Civ IV skills, giving me the stronger civ is just the nail in the coffin. :D
Mauer Oct 10, 2006, 02:26 PM I know RM, just a cheap shot :D Nevermind the fact that I wasn't placed next to the Mongolian horde........
RegentMan Oct 10, 2006, 02:30 PM I know. :) And keep bringing 'em! It'll be all the more gratifying when I defeat Ginger_Ale.
Ginger_Ale Oct 10, 2006, 02:54 PM Shall I go ahead and create 2 polls for RM and I's civilizations? You guys can vote for up to 3 or something.
We should go with an all random map (besides pangea).
peter grimes Oct 10, 2006, 08:07 PM Will you be polling all the civs for each of you?
Personally, I don't think either of you should wind up with a late game UU. But maybe that's just because I'm impatient ;)
Ginger_Ale Oct 10, 2006, 08:45 PM Yeah, probably.
RM, if you read this and agree to polling our civs, you can set up the polls if you have some free time, if not I'll do it in the morning.
RegentMan Oct 11, 2006, 12:37 AM What will be the poll options? Surely not a listing of every leader. Why not have some suggestions first?
Ginger_Ale Oct 11, 2006, 05:00 AM Ahhh, as you wish.
If you want to suggest a leader(s) for RM and I, post now! Keep in mind it has to be one of the original 18, no Warlords ones.
I also have a brand-new sig! :)
Robi D Oct 11, 2006, 05:17 AM I have a suggestion as a possible combination
Elizabeth vs Catherine
both are financial and both have UU's at roughly the same time so the should be no complaints from the loser.
You can "toss a coin" over who has who
peter grimes Oct 11, 2006, 06:30 AM That's a clever idea, Robi!
I do think the timing of the UU should be taken into consideration... unless we vote one of them to be Ghandi ;)
Mauer Oct 11, 2006, 06:38 AM I also have a brand-new sig! :)
Yeah, I was gonna check that out, but it says look no further......so I just passed it up.
How about Germany and America.
BCLG100 Oct 11, 2006, 06:41 AM Could edit the game to see a true test of skill and give em civs with no UU and no traits.
Robi D Oct 11, 2006, 07:01 AM Could edit the game to see a true test of skill and give em civs with no UU and no traits.
But that wouldn't be civ, beside one of the true tests is making the most of your traits in the game, but i figured we should give them some equal standing so there is no complaints afterwards
dutchfire Oct 11, 2006, 08:00 AM Gandhi vs Asoka
DaveMcW Oct 11, 2006, 08:05 AM Saladin vs Isabella
RegentMan Oct 11, 2006, 11:09 AM I also have a brand-new sig! :)
Pssh! If by beating me you mean having the best worst civ, then no complaints here! :p
Nice combos so far. :)
DaveMcW Oct 11, 2006, 11:14 AM Alexander vs Ghengis Khan... :mischief:
RegentMan Oct 11, 2006, 11:15 AM BCLG will tell you how well that is going... :p
Ginger_Ale Oct 11, 2006, 11:16 AM Yeah, I was gonna check that out, but it says look no further......so I just passed it up.
:crazyeye:
Very nice pairings, and in dutchfire's we'd be the same civ! Any of these are fine but I suppose we can poll it in a day.
Mauer Oct 11, 2006, 11:18 AM When we decide on a proper match up, then we can use the toin coss below to see who gets which civ...:D
http://shazam.econ.ubc.ca/flip/
Gogf Oct 11, 2006, 03:53 PM I vote random civs for both of you :D.
BCLG100 Oct 11, 2006, 07:29 PM BCLG will tell you how well that is going... :p
i believe alex is all over genghis like a rash.
azzaman333 Oct 11, 2006, 08:35 PM Genghis vs Kublai would be interesting.
dutchfire Oct 12, 2006, 08:39 AM Mao vs Qin
Collateral Cho-Ko-Nu damage!
RegentMan Oct 12, 2006, 01:38 PM Here are the suggestions thus far:
Elizabeth vs Catherine - :)
Germany and America
Gandhi vs Asoka
Saladin vs Isabella - :)
Alexander vs Ghengis Khan
Random vs Random - :)
Genghis vs Kublai
Mao vs Qin
I put :) next to my favorite three. Poll it later, maybe?
Ginger_Ale Oct 12, 2006, 02:39 PM I'm leaning towards Elizabeth v. Catherine and Saladin v. Isabella, but no random for me. Too...random!
If you want to put up a 2 day poll between those two options, be my guest!
Whomp Oct 12, 2006, 03:17 PM I prefer a good cat fight. Liz vs. Cathy.
Regentman I'm on your side kid. I'll look for your spoiler!
Alexander vs Ghengis Khan... :mischief:
Very subtle Dave. :p
Ginger_Ale Oct 12, 2006, 03:32 PM Regentman I'm on your side kid. I'll look for your spoiler!
*opens Group Membership...list Team Piffle...remove Whomp...confirm?...yes*
Woops! Glad I caught myself at the last second. :mischief:
If RegentMan is a kid, what am I?

Pipsqueak! :hammer:
RM was one of my partners when we gave the Russians a beatdown in the c3c 3x3 pbem! We are old comrades. :D
RegentMan Oct 13, 2006, 01:39 AM Ah, I remember that Whomp! We kicked some major arse. :hammer: Don't really see them around here much anymore... ;)
The poll is open here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=189231)
RegentMan Oct 15, 2006, 03:57 PM We have begun! Here will be Ginger_Ale's future nightmare, currently in its infant stage:
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e194/TitanicWhiz18/PBEM/CageMatch1.jpg
So cute! :D
As always, we'd love to hear commentary from everyone. I'll post a more in depth spoiler at CDZ in a bit. This'll be our taunting and update thread! :hammer:
Your move, "pipsqueak." ;)
Ginger_Ale Oct 15, 2006, 04:58 PM Yes, I am very much scared by the fact you are building...nothing. :o
Following what you have done, here is my start (I founded on spot) - currently I have the default name. I'm not to creative, yeah?
http://img168.imageshack.us/img168/3951/startmv3.jpg
CDZ? Blasphemy! I'm going to create my spoiler here in the main forum (no peeking!).
Your move, not-so-cool-squeak.
RegentMan Oct 16, 2006, 03:07 PM Covered in resources, eh? ;)
RegentMan Oct 16, 2006, 03:31 PM Bah, no one outdoes me here at CFC! I'll maintain two, one at CFC (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=189619) and one at CDZ (http://www.civ3duelzone.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3873).
Woot!
Ginger_Ale Oct 16, 2006, 03:53 PM Covered in resources, eh? ;)
Trees can be considered a natural resource. :mischief:
Going to play the save now...

Good work Regentman. Save's to Pipsqueak! :p
BCLG100 Oct 16, 2006, 05:28 PM shame GA has more posts in his spoiler than both yours combined so far huh RM? :p
Ginger_Ale Oct 16, 2006, 07:25 PM I guess it just shows who is more popular, huh? :king:
BCLG100 Oct 16, 2006, 07:30 PM I guess it just shows who is more popular, huh? :king:
yup and if nothing else civ is a popularity contest :goodjob:
RegentMan Oct 17, 2006, 01:36 AM And the fact that I had made them mere hours before your posts? :p
azzaman333 Oct 17, 2006, 01:40 AM You nuking each other yet? :p
Ginger_Ale Oct 17, 2006, 02:31 PM Man, how did RM's spoiler get 11 posts so quickly? spammer
RegentMan Oct 18, 2006, 12:08 AM Maybe it's the fact people look forward to my compassionate storyline with odd, but loveable characters.
Or maybe they just love me better. :p
Ginger_Ale Oct 18, 2006, 12:22 PM Mmm-hmm, I'm sure it's your loveable characters.
Playing the save now...
RegentMan Oct 18, 2006, 04:17 PM Whoa! Slow down there, Mr. I'll Take The Early Lead In Score!

RegentMan Oct 21, 2006, 02:08 PM Why, hello there little guy!

RegentMan Oct 22, 2006, 02:20 PM The little guy doesn't like to play with others, I guess.
Oh well, my scout's meditation paid off.
RegentMan Oct 23, 2006, 11:29 PM Victorious wars thus far:
RegentMan: 1. Ginger_Ale: 0. :D
:mischief:
Ginger_Ale Oct 24, 2006, 05:14 AM Victorious Battles
RM: 1
GA: 1
Scouting out my lands isn't enough to win a war. :p
Robi D Oct 24, 2006, 06:04 AM Now play nice boys;)
There is plenty of land for everyone
RegentMan Oct 24, 2006, 12:23 PM Maybe for Ginger!
Gogf Oct 27, 2006, 02:26 PM Never underestimate the value of intelligence in a civ game. Knowing your opponent's land and city locations is a significant advantage.
Not really much of a war, though... :p
RegentMan Oct 29, 2006, 03:39 AM Not really much of a war, though... :p
Tell that to the scout's eight kids. :(
;)
Ginger_Ale Oct 29, 2006, 06:30 AM Let's call them orphans, shall we?
RegentMan Oct 29, 2006, 12:33 PM Ouch!
Although their mother's doing just fine. :hmm:
Robi D Oct 29, 2006, 10:20 PM Ouch!

We should after having all those cows and wheat nearby! :D
RegentMan Nov 10, 2006, 02:23 PM And the second Spanish-Regentian War is afoot.
DaveMcW Nov 10, 2006, 02:36 PM You mean the second Spanish-Regentian scout massacre?
BCLG100 Nov 10, 2006, 09:13 PM You mean the second Spanish-Regentian scout massacre?
probably not even going to be anything as exciting as that.

Ginger_Ale Nov 15, 2006, 05:10 AM O RegentMan, where art thou?
RegentMan Nov 15, 2006, 03:04 PM Sorry, my procrastination of reading a book has caught up to me. 158/350 pages so far. The save is yours. :)
dutchfire Nov 29, 2006, 09:09 AM Are you still playing the game? :p
RegentMan Nov 29, 2006, 12:13 PM Yes sir. Ginger_Ale is getting decisively beat thus far, and I don't see any sign of that changing! :hammer:
Ginger_Ale Nov 29, 2006, 08:59 PM Of course not, but that's because it's all part of my plan. :mischief:
I will update my spoiler this weekend with some awesome new screenshots of my glorious nation.

Robi D Dec 22, 2006, 07:05 PM And we have offically hi jacked the thread:lol:
classical_hero Dec 22, 2006, 11:49 PM I Predict a few bannings coming up soon. ;) But I do suck at predictions. Well at least there is action in this thread. What is happening to this game? I hope this is not another Demogame Cage fight monday thing.
Ginger_Ale Dec 23, 2006, 07:22 AM No, we're playing turns (a constant 1 a day, which is good), there's just not much to report because it's still early.
RegentMan Dec 31, 2006, 09:35 AM Happy new year to you too...
Ginger_Ale Jan 02, 2007, 02:12 PM Ginger_Ale just went to BestBuy and bought some new games for the year! :) One of them was Warlords...so now my question is, first, can you load saves from Vanilla into Warlords? (I think you can.) Second, do you want to move this game into Warlords if that is possible?
BCLG100 Jan 03, 2007, 10:48 AM im not so sure whether you can GA.
RegentMan Jan 03, 2007, 10:55 AM Ginger_Ale just went to BestBuy and bought some new games for the year! :) One of them was Warlords...so now my question is, first, can you load saves from Vanilla into Warlords? (I think you can.) Second, do you want to move this game into Warlords if that is possible?
Hmm... I don't think that's possible. And if it is, then I'm inclined not to, as that would change traits and wonders mid-game.
Although congrats on finally getting Warlords! How does your computer handle it, a turn every minute? :p
Ginger_Ale Jan 03, 2007, 11:22 AM So now I have to use my Civ4 CD every time I want to play the save, even though my SP games are on Warlords? Ugh. :p
A turn a minute? Waaaaay faster! Though the interturn is quite long...
BCLG100 Jan 03, 2007, 04:17 PM you can get a nocd crack-which is legal as you have the disk
RegentMan Jan 04, 2007, 10:20 AM So now I have to use my Civ4 CD every time I want to play the save, even though my SP games are on Warlords? Ugh. :p

BCLG100 Jan 04, 2007, 03:34 PM well your playing me at vanilla too...
RegentMan Jan 05, 2007, 08:47 AM well your playing me at vanilla too...

DaveMcW Mar 12, 2007, 11:24 AM So who's winning?
RegentMan Mar 13, 2007, 01:02 PM So who's winning?
Score-wise, Ginger is.
But everything else-wise, I am. Update next turn!
Tubby Rower May 10, 2007, 06:42 AM *nudge* *nudge* that's a loooong turn ;)
RegentMan May 10, 2007, 08:10 PM Well, I'm certainly not going to post the update in here.
*Cough* (Spoiler alert, Ginger) (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=5202450&postcount=65) *Cough*
And there's a current update there too!
Ginger_Ale May 13, 2007, 06:14 AM Sorry, I'm been basking in the glory of my empire, which, I might add, has a three hundred point lead over "Regentia". ;)
I'll post screenshots when I open the save today.
peter grimes Aug 16, 2007, 08:58 AM :bump:
Is this game still running?
RegentMan Aug 16, 2007, 10:26 AM Ginger hasn't passed me a save in a while... :(
Did I need to resend?
Ginger_Ale Aug 19, 2007, 08:01 AM Oh...I thought I had and was waiting for you to send the save!
I'm not currently at my civ computer (which is why I didn't respond quickly to this). When I return to it in a few days (mid next week), I'll check. I'm pretty sure I had played and sent it, but not 100% sure.
RegentMan Aug 19, 2007, 12:27 PM D'oh!
But I haven't seen a save since I sent you the last one. We'll see.
Ginger_Ale Aug 22, 2007, 02:52 PM You sent me Turn 187 (1270 AD) on July 27th. That's the last email I've received from you.
On July 28th, my most recent sent mail, I sent you 1280 AD. The save has to be with you... (I'm back home now, BTW).
RegentMan Aug 22, 2007, 06:52 PM Sure, blame it on me...
Resent to you.
