View Full Version : *Spoiler* MTDG Cage Match - GA's Spoiler
Ginger_Ale Oct 15, 2006, 05:04 PM If your name is RegentMan, please exit the thread. Well, in reality, it doesn't matter if you look, since you don't have a chance of wining. :D
I am Ginger_Ale, leader of the Spanish. Our glorious nation's history starts at 4000 BC, when our capital city of Madrid was founded, starting production on a warrior (15 turns) and research on Agriculture (7). My plans for research include the worker/city development techs, for roading, pastures, cottages, etc. I have a cow resource I'd like to utilize, as well as a nice flood plain tile and some hills and forests. Looks pretty nice compared to RegentMan's start! The RNG likes me better. :)

note: My screenshots, when I show pictures of the map, will have city text, population, and builds show up as blue highlights, meaning I can't read his city names, population, and religions, and other stuff. It's due to my graphics card. If you'd like to fix this, consider giving me money to get a new one. :p
Comments welcome (since I'm such a newbie)!
BCLG100 Oct 15, 2006, 05:20 PM Nice start :) but why have you gone for agriculture? if your aiming for AH-hunting is the cheaper pre req :)
Ginger_Ale Oct 15, 2006, 06:10 PM Yeah, but I'd rather have the ability to build farms as well, especially since I have a floodplain there. Hunting won't do me much good this early, but I'll be sure to pick it up.
BCLG100 Oct 15, 2006, 06:13 PM Looking at that screenie i shove a cottage down on that floodplain and not a farm :) you've got enough food :)
Robi D Oct 16, 2006, 12:55 AM Looking at that screenie i shove a cottage down on that floodplain and not a farm :) you've got enough food :)
But looking at the second screenshot the warrior is eating the bread:lol:
i have to agree with BC, unless your really struggling for food a cottage on the flood plain is the way to go
Gogf Oct 16, 2006, 04:38 AM Good luck, GA :)!
I agree that the floodplain would probably be best cottaged. I also would have gone for hunting: it allows you to build scouts and gives you access to archers if you find yourself without resources. On the other hand, agriculture is hardly a bad tech to pickup, of course.
Ginger_Ale Oct 16, 2006, 05:04 AM Okay, I suppose wasting one turn's research won't be that bad, since I'm going to grow faster than RM anyway with the flooplain.
Nice 7,000th post Gogf! :)
Robi D Oct 16, 2006, 05:09 AM Okay, I suppose wasting one turn's research won't be that bad, since I'm going to grow faster than RM anyway with the flooplain.
Nice 7,000th post Gogf! :)
The research wont be wasted, the beakers done will stay there

Do you have all settings on lowest?
Ginger_Ale Oct 16, 2006, 05:17 PM No, but I have a nVIDIA GeForce 2 MX 400, which speaks for itself about its crapiness.
In other news, woohoo :D, more cows and some silver! And a screenshot, because I know you guys like them a lot more than just some text.
http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/2084/morecowszj5.th.jpg (http://img175.imageshack.us/my.php?image=morecowszj5.jpg)
BCLG100 Oct 16, 2006, 05:26 PM pictures are good:) thought of a name yet?
Robi D Oct 17, 2006, 01:35 AM No, but I have a nVIDIA GeForce 2 MX 400, which speaks for itself about its crapiness.
Thats the exact same one i had but i never had a problem with the writing, still it was very crappy so you have my sympathies
Ginger_Ale Oct 17, 2006, 05:02 AM Interesting - however, you probably had the latest drivers (because there was a thread in the Bugs forum where someone else had the same card and same problem, and he downloaded the drivers and it worked fine then), but when I tried to update the drivers it nearly killed my PC (lucky I got to reboot using system restore). My previous experiences with drivers aren't that good.
Robi D Oct 18, 2006, 01:26 AM I was able to update the drivers but it still wasn't that great. If you look through some of my spoilers in the aloha thread you can see the difference between the old and new graphics card.
Also RM has more post because he is posting screenies
Ginger_Ale Oct 18, 2006, 05:09 AM Wait, so you never had blue text even before you updated drivers? Interesting, I'll look into it.
Robi D Oct 18, 2006, 06:09 AM No i didn't, but like i said it was nothing special, even with the new drivers it had issues. The new graphics card in the other hand is brilliant
BCLG100 Oct 18, 2006, 06:55 AM do you still play with all the graphics on low robi?
Robi D Oct 18, 2006, 07:01 AM I play on medium. I still kept the single unit graphic because i guess i got used to them. I could play on high without problems, but i like my big maps and i don't want it to go to slow later in the game.
I will say even on low the graphics looked better then on the old card
BCLG100 Oct 18, 2006, 07:05 AM yup ive noticed the change in your screenies in aloha to a couple of spoilers, was just curious :)
cant get above standard and even then its a struggle at points :(
Ginger_Ale Oct 18, 2006, 12:34 PM Lots of resources. Need I say more?
http://img124.imageshack.us/img124/655/lotsaresourceskb4.th.jpg (http://img124.imageshack.us/my.php?image=lotsaresourceskb4.jpg)
By the way, the two X's I drew on the screen are proposed city locations. Any comments? I'm trying to make use of the cows, silver, wheat, gems, and dyes. :D
DaveMcW Oct 18, 2006, 12:55 PM The wheat+cow site looks great. You should explore the north some more and try to get a food resource in with the luxuries.
How do you plan to get border expansion? Religion? Obelisks?
Robi D Oct 18, 2006, 04:16 PM I agree with dave, try to explore the northern site more as you might get a better location, otherwise it all good
dutchfire Oct 19, 2006, 02:17 AM I'd prefer 2 gems over 2 dyes, as they give cash before calendar.
Ginger_Ale Oct 19, 2006, 05:42 AM Can you say 3 luxury resources?
http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/2142/gemssugarspicevq3.th.jpg (http://img85.imageshack.us/my.php?image=gemssugarspicevq3.jpg)
I'm still exploring up there, so I'll see if there's a good spot to found my city. There's also an additional dyes there (total of 3).
DaveShack Oct 20, 2006, 02:00 AM Did you do something special to get beige interface backgrounds, or did it just happen that way? If it just happened, anything odd about your civ installation? If you did something, what? I doubt it has anything to do with the weird text problem, just curious right now. ;)
Ginger_Ale Oct 20, 2006, 05:14 AM No, I was just testing a downloaded tan interface. My civ installation is doing fine, thank you very much. :p
My warrior is still exploring up north, so I'll let you know what he finds. My city also grew to size 2! Any complaints about building a worker next after my warrior finishes?
Memphus Oct 20, 2006, 10:59 AM Depending on what is above the Gems I see the potential for 2 cities there (one for the gems it would be my city #3 after the cow / wheat) and a fourth city to be founded with the dye / sugar because by then you should have calendar!
Ginger_Ale Oct 21, 2006, 07:43 AM I saw a hut as I was exploring up north...I popped it, and:
http://img244.imageshack.us/img244/7926/freeagriculturemh7.jpg
I also spotted a barbarian lion, but my capital finishes the warrior in 2 turns I think, so I'm ok. Here's a picture of that, as well as some of the terrain by those dyes (so far no food resources) - I love flying camera mode. :D
http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/2313/lionjq1.jpg
Robi D Oct 21, 2006, 08:12 AM Animals dont enter cultural borders anyway. Well done on the agricultural discovery ;)
Ginger_Ale Oct 21, 2006, 12:56 PM WE HAVE MET!
http://img343.imageshack.us/img343/4720/contactdk0.jpg
Here's the the hope that RM moves his scout within 1 tile of my warrior and I can take him out for XP.
Ginger_Ale Oct 21, 2006, 05:02 PM I attacked RM's scout...
...and lost. :(
I didn't want him to know where my capital was, but oh well. I produced a warrior anyway that turn and am going to build a scout (7 turns) to explore. It's not like my warrior was exploring quite fast anyway. A worker would've taken too long (12 turns) for my liking, so I'll let the city grow to size 3 first.
DaveMcW Oct 21, 2006, 06:20 PM Lemme guess... the scout was in a forest hill across the river?
Ginger_Ale Oct 21, 2006, 06:28 PM :D
Well it was 50/50...
Ginger_Ale Oct 22, 2006, 05:08 PM Good news: RM's scout is only .1/1, so if he moves into a tile by my warrior, he's dead basically.
Better Awesome news: I have horses. :worship:

dutchfire Oct 23, 2006, 09:16 AM wheel + worker -> chariot rush?
Memphus Oct 23, 2006, 09:53 AM Well that could be one possibility, But I think it was more for the Unique Unit ;)
Mauer Oct 23, 2006, 02:53 PM Hey GA, how come you're working that plain NE of your capital? Just curious :D
Paalikles Oct 23, 2006, 03:50 PM Good luck GA. Tis a shame you are not keeping spoilers @ CDZ anymore
Mauer Oct 23, 2006, 04:03 PM Hey GA, how come you're working that plain NE of your capital? Just curious :D
Nevermind, been pointed out that your little horsies just popped up. My apologies :goodjob:
Ginger_Ale Oct 23, 2006, 05:06 PM Perhaps a chariot rush, first I'd like to see where RM is with my scout...
Paal: Yeah, I know. If this was a regular old PBEM, I'd do a spoiler at CDZ, but since it's mainly for the entertainment of these MTDG folks, I'm doing it here. :)
Ginger_Ale Oct 23, 2006, 07:45 PM Update: RM moved his scout into my lands to explore, he was attacked by a lion, nearly killed, but not quite. I finished the job and got 1 XP. I'll post some screenies once I finish my scout (1 turn) and explore.
Ginger_Ale Oct 29, 2006, 03:21 PM My scout is exploring and met Peter's scout north of my capital. I also found some stone near the gems, to the north. Current proposed city locations:
Between the wheat and cow (there is silver 2S of the cow) SW of the stone
http://img104.imageshack.us/img104/2062/peterfo6.jpg
http://img165.imageshack.us/img165/9781/zoomedoutrc2.jpg
Robi D Oct 30, 2006, 03:09 AM Gems and stone in 1 city, looking good GA:)
BCLG100 Oct 30, 2006, 05:46 AM maybe move the scout towards the coast to see if theres any sea resources?
Ginger_Ale Nov 08, 2006, 05:32 PM I have found Peter's territory, which is to the NW of me. I've been scouting around the northern lands, and will post a screenshot next turn...
Ginger_Ale Nov 09, 2006, 05:41 PM Also met Tokugawa, as well as one of RM's scouting warriors. As promised, the screenshot (my lands are in the very bottom right of this) -- what's the shortcut to get rid of all the bottom and top bars? I can't seem to remember...
http://img376.imageshack.us/img376/4991/civ4screenshot0023hz0.th.jpg (http://img376.imageshack.us/my.php?image=civ4screenshot0023hz0.jpg)
Any ideas for placing cities in the north?
lost_civantares Nov 09, 2006, 09:33 PM Control-i removes the minimap and HUD.
DaveMcW Nov 10, 2006, 07:12 PM You definitely want to build on a hill whenever possible.
BCLG100 Nov 10, 2006, 09:19 PM one near the dyes, one near the gems and stone and if you can put one on that desert patch to grab them 2 calendar resources, cows and corn you've got your GP farm right there
Ginger_Ale Nov 10, 2006, 09:40 PM Is 3 tile spacing too close or will it work out okay?
BCLG100 Nov 11, 2006, 07:00 AM http://img179.imageshack.us/img179/7905/helppykz4.jpg
is how id settle....
Ginger_Ale Nov 11, 2006, 08:30 AM I was just wondering, if, like Dave said, it would be better to settle on the hill by the dyes, but whatever - there's enough dyes to go around.
Ginger_Ale Dec 01, 2006, 05:45 PM State of the Empire, 2000 BC!
First off, I chopped the forest hill next to my capital, so that RM can't just park one of his units there if he attacks. Second, I'm going to found a city in about 3 turns, near the wheat, cows, and silver. My capital's currently building a granary to help with growth, and then I expect to build a few more units and a barracks as well as another settler soon. Screenshot of my current situation:
http://img168.imageshack.us/img168/8815/abouttofoundcityls3.th.jpg (http://img168.imageshack.us/my.php?image=abouttofoundcityls3.jpg)
Gogf Jan 07, 2007, 07:43 PM So, are you guys still playing?
Ginger_Ale Jan 08, 2007, 05:04 AM Yes, we're at 1160 BC. Basically I have a Woodsman II warrior scouting out his lands (he'll die soon), I have 3 cities, and am building the Oracle (just a few turns left). I'll post a screenshot later (I was going to write "soon", but then I would feel an obligation to update it quickly. :p).
BCLG100 Jan 09, 2007, 12:56 PM what are you planning on getting with the oracle, CS?
Ginger_Ale May 13, 2007, 02:22 PM Lots of updates... I have my own religion, I am doing pretty well in the demographics, #1 in score, I used a Great Artist down south to spread my culture around RM's cities, and oh yeah, I'm first in technology. :)
Screenshots ahoy!
