View Full Version : MTDG Cage Match - RegentMan's *Spoiler*
RegentMan Oct 16, 2006, 04:29 PM No Ginger_Ale here! :hammer:
Well, I can't have Ginger_Ale out-do me, so I'll have a spoiler thread here at CFC. I have one set up at CDZ, but both should be identical. However, if you read both threads, keep comments non-spoilerish! Do not post something in our threads that could tip one another off, e.g. "Hey RM, you might want to reinforce your port city. A little birdy tells me that Ginger will invade there." Any other comments are much welcomed, however. :)
I just played turn two, and here is my complete start:
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e194/TitanicWhiz18/PBEM/Turn002-CageMatch.jpg
I'm going for Buddhism. I wanted Spain so I could work any lake tiles in my radius and possibly go for the coveted hydra. Maybe I'll still be able to do it here? Depends what Ginger goes for.
Gogf Oct 16, 2006, 10:04 PM Just a note, but "the hydra" is NOT a good tactic in multiplayer, even if you were 100% confident that you start apart, which you aren't. There are more important techs to research, like military techs and land improvement techs. In single player, you can count on eventually getting all of the land you need form the AI. You can't count on that in multiplayer, and even if the map meant that you could, you would get going far too late to be competitive.
That said, getting a religion isn't necessarily a bad idea. Getting two is pointless, and getting three is definitely a bad idea.
Your start location is pretty bad — no rivers, all of those lakes without lighthouse access, the only food being a cow — but you do have a plains hill capital, at least.
Good luck :).
Memphus Oct 16, 2006, 10:16 PM Who's Up for a CS Sling? I would enjoy One!
Meditation (Not my first choice but it will Definetly Physc out GA)
But if you go Mining, Bronze, Agri, Animal, Writing, Priest, CoL it should be a snap.
With a worker, chopped out worker chopped out Library and a couple of Forced Scientists I Put it at roughly 1800-2000 B.C. although it might have to be pottery instead of Agri/Animal but not hooking up the cow seems liek such a waste.
Oh well anyways if you do go for it and pull it off it will sure be a boost :goodjob:
azzaman333 Oct 17, 2006, 01:50 AM Memphus knows all about pulling off CS slingshots in PBEM.
RegentMan Oct 17, 2006, 02:41 AM I guess the hydra is a bad idea. Good RP value, but too much regardless.

 We Regentians are simple folk! ;)
Meanwhile, back in the game:
Turn 4
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e194/TitanicWhiz18/PBEM/Turn004-Borders.jpg
I bet one twig it's Peter (remember, we're in vanilla). Any takers?
azzaman333 Oct 17, 2006, 02:55 AM I shall bet 1 small stone that its Cathy.
Robi D Oct 17, 2006, 06:34 AM Hey Regentman a little birdy told me Ginger Ale wants to pound you into the dust so that he can have the bragging right upto the CIV 5 mtdg, or is this information spoilerish:mischief:
Memphus Oct 17, 2006, 07:18 AM I guess the hydra is a bad idea. Good RP value, but too much regardless.
 We Regentians are simple folk! ;)
Alright alright I guess that is a little bit difficult. Well then you could at least pull of a Worker steal with your neighbour to the North
BCLG100 Oct 17, 2006, 08:51 AM Its easier to do a worker steal on higher levels though, this is noble so the AI doesnt start with one IIRC.
DaveMcW Oct 17, 2006, 08:57 AM Wow, you guys must have a better monitor than me. I think it looks like Arabia!
Gogf Oct 17, 2006, 09:51 AM I would suggest abstaining for abusive tricks like worker stealing. You're supposedly to be playing a competitive game against GA, not using the AI's stupidity to cheat.
RegentMan Oct 17, 2006, 12:44 PM Hey Regentman a little birdy told me Ginger Ale wants to pound you into the dust so that he can have the bragging right upto the CIV 5 mtdg, or is this information spoilerish:mischief:
:p
I popped the hut and got a scout! The scout reveals...
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e194/TitanicWhiz18/PBEM/Turn005-Peter.jpg
Looks like I own one twig and one stone now! :D
Wow, you guys must have a better monitor than me. I think it looks like Arabia!
Well, I'm Arabia, so it might not be 100% incorrect. ;)
BCLG100 Oct 17, 2006, 03:43 PM Aye but that aint what it said first time around
DaveMcW Oct 17, 2006, 03:52 PM Er, spain not arabia. You mentioned spain in the first post so I assumed that was you. :p
Whomp Oct 17, 2006, 04:47 PM Pretty tight quarters RM. Where the heck are the rivers?
What's the plan after meditation?
RegentMan Oct 18, 2006, 01:02 AM You're tellin' me, Whomp: Turn 6
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e194/TitanicWhiz18/PBEM/Turn006.jpg
Border expansion reveals... Caesar!
After meditation? I didn't think about it. I need defense, so going for archers might be wise. Or, if offense is the best defense, either animal husbandry (horses) or bronze working (copper). It will be awhile before I can get bronze working, though.
Robi D Oct 18, 2006, 02:22 AM Did you make the map tiny instead of small by accident?
dutchfire Oct 18, 2006, 03:39 AM I'd say bronze working, as there are quite a lot of forests (and jungles!) around.
DaveMcW Oct 18, 2006, 01:58 PM AH is pretty important to work the cow.
If AH reveals horses nearby, I would go for Horseback Riding before Bronze Working. Horses are deadly against an opponent with no spears. ;)
RegentMan Oct 18, 2006, 05:16 PM Did you make the map tiny instead of small by accident?
No, I'm sure I didn't, otherwise I would have had to add slots for the extra AI. Pretty cramped quarters! Watch, Ginger is in his own little world...
If AH reveals horses nearby, I would go for Horseback Riding before Bronze Working. Horses are deadly against an opponent with no spears. ;)
Thanks for the tip. :p
With the cows, and mobile horses, I think I'll go for animal husbandry next. Although bronze working will be needed with all the foilage around here, as dutchfire pointed out.
Robi D Oct 18, 2006, 05:20 PM No, I'm sure I didn't, otherwise I would have had to add slots for the extra AI. Pretty cramped quarters! Watch, Ginger is in his own little world...
You have to ask Ginger about that, but thats if Peter or JC don't get you first
RegentMan Oct 19, 2006, 01:30 PM Who has a holy city? RegentMan does! :D
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e194/TitanicWhiz18/PBEM/Turn009-RegentMangrad.jpg
Who knows another very hostile civ next door to him? RegentMan does! :D
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e194/TitanicWhiz18/PBEM/Turn009-Jap.jpg
I guarantee I'll find Ginger_Ale to the east in a few turns. I bet I'll be his first contact!
Lemme refine your quote, Robi:
You have to ask Ginger about that, but thats if Peter, JC, or Tokugawa don't get you first
peter grimes Oct 20, 2006, 12:46 PM Maybe it's too early to pick targets, but taking out Caesar before he has Iron hooked up would be wise.
I would go for horse archers.
RegentMan Oct 21, 2006, 03:06 PM The world is known:
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e194/TitanicWhiz18/PBEM/Turn012-Ginger.jpg
Unfortunately, he'll meet Peter in a turn or two, as Peter's scout has been stalking mine. He even stole a goody hut from me!
RegentMan Oct 22, 2006, 03:18 PM Ginger goes hostile! Regentian scout draws first blood!
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e194/TitanicWhiz18/PBEM/Turn014-Scout.jpg
50% to win... whew! Now to go scout out his homeland. :)
RegentMan Oct 23, 2006, 03:04 PM A sad day for Regentia. On the interturn, a lion attacked my scout, dropping it to .1 :strength: ! Rather than wait ten turns to heal, I decided, "Screw it!" and marched it onto the forested hill next to Ginger_Ale's captial. All that flatland allows me to see most of his city radius; not a resource in site! Poor guy (probably has four clams and copper though... ;) )...
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e194/TitanicWhiz18/PBEM/Turn015-Suicide.jpg
Poor scout... :( You will be remembered. :salute:
lost_civantares Oct 23, 2006, 03:19 PM Just you watch, it's going to be one of those .01% battles that you win (that actually happened to me once, it was just *wow*, The RNG can be nice? ;) )
peter grimes Oct 23, 2006, 04:20 PM Lost is right. I've lost battles with 99% odds. You never know! Because odds are just that - a probability of an outcome, not a prediction.
RegentMan Oct 23, 2006, 04:49 PM Well, I think 2 :strength: vs. .2 :strength: is one of those battles where you have a 100.1% chance to win. ;)
DaveMcW Oct 23, 2006, 06:48 PM He did contact every civ on the game and explore 80% of GA's territory. I think that qualifies him for "retirement"!
Theoden Oct 23, 2006, 07:02 PM He did contact every civ on the game and explore 80% of GA's territory. I think that qualifies him for "retirement"!
I guess you mean retirement as in the good old days:
"You've contacted the whole known world, killed a warrior and explored most of our main rivals territory. We feel that it's time for your retirement. Oh, wait, you're in enemy lands with about 0.01% chance to survive the next turn. Well, tough luck for you, but it saves the empire from paying you the promised retirement bonus." :D
Memphus Oct 23, 2006, 07:08 PM On the other hand if he won next turn...too bad scouts could take over cities as it would be game over :p
Mauer Oct 23, 2006, 08:15 PM I'd disband to save from him getting XP.
RegentMan Oct 24, 2006, 12:27 AM I'd disband to save from him getting XP.
Too late. :(
I don't have a screenie for this turn, but we made peace. Yay to Regentia for winning the world's first war! :goodjob:
:mischief:
BCLG100 Oct 24, 2006, 08:53 AM im unsure why you made peace, he declared on you ww would really affect him a lot more than it would you.
Theoden Oct 24, 2006, 09:31 AM No, WW has nothing to do with who declared the war. That was only back in civ3 it worked like that. :)
RegentMan Oct 30, 2006, 01:16 PM Horses! :D
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e194/TitanicWhiz18/PBEM/Turn022-Horses.jpg
RegentMan Nov 01, 2006, 02:03 AM Damn copycat Ginger...
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e194/TitanicWhiz18/PBEM/Turn023-Eek.jpg
RegentMan Nov 05, 2006, 12:46 PM City site planning time!
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e194/TitanicWhiz18/PBEM/Turn028-CitySites.jpg
I like Site 2, but I'll need to settle a Site 1a or one of the Site 3s first.
DaveMcW Nov 05, 2006, 01:13 PM Here's how I would settle:
http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/9073/regentmaniaxz5.jpg
RegentMan Nov 10, 2006, 03:04 PM Here's how I would settle:
Ginger_Ale has brought a scout over to my side of the world. Remeber what he did to mine when I explored his side? :hammer:
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e194/TitanicWhiz18/PBEM/Turn031-SecondWar.jpg
You know it does!
Ginger will be left in the dark about my lands and any neighbors I have (he knows Peter and perhaps Tokugawa).
Regentia:
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e194/TitanicWhiz18/PBEM/Turn031-Regentia.jpg
Moo...
Any thoughts on how I should farm/cottage? I was thinking a few farms, but mostly cottages.
Mauer Nov 10, 2006, 05:47 PM I'd say that looks like a good hammer site. I'd farm and mine it.
DaveMcW Nov 10, 2006, 06:52 PM You have 4 surplus food working the cow, that is enough to work 4 mined hills!
You already know what I'd do with all that production...
Robi D Nov 10, 2006, 08:05 PM I'm pretty sure he needs at least one farm to mine all the hills, but you can pretty much run cottages. Also look at getting maths before you start chopping, it makes a big difference
Mauer Nov 10, 2006, 09:16 PM This is why I have 7 cities.
BCLG100 Nov 10, 2006, 10:27 PM your philo right RM? farms are your way forward then, contrary to what others have been saying. library in the capital force a couple of scientists and you can be lighbulbing every tech and then trading them around with the AI if need be.
Course if your not who i think you are then cottage all the way :) though id still chop that first settler. pre math
RegentMan Nov 15, 2006, 04:30 PM Ginger_Ale and I have made peace, which makes Regentia 2-0 in the Spanish-Regentian wars thus far. :D
Although look what I found in the south...
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e194/TitanicWhiz18/PBEM/Turn035-Interesting-1.jpg
Should I look to settling there first?
DaveMcW Nov 15, 2006, 04:40 PM You definitely want to get that site before GA does. But no need to settle it right away, just park your warrior there.
RegentMan Nov 19, 2006, 05:22 PM A little gloating:
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e194/TitanicWhiz18/PBEM/Turn039-Regentia.jpg
I wonder why my score is so inflated.
BCLG100 Nov 19, 2006, 05:29 PM its not so much gloating if GA cant actually see.....
lost_civantares Nov 19, 2006, 10:11 PM GA will see the thread after he finishes wailing in the ashes of his former capital... ;)
RegentMan Nov 25, 2006, 01:42 PM Next save I'll have a settler. Where shall he go?
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e194/TitanicWhiz18/PBEM/Turn045-Sites.jpg
dutchfire Nov 26, 2006, 06:26 AM Site 1a, blocks the other civs.
RegentMan Nov 26, 2006, 12:26 PM That's what I was thinking, dutchfire. Plus, it gives me three sources of ivory.
Although Peter has become my religion rival...
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e194/TitanicWhiz18/PBEM/Turn046-Hinduism.jpg
RegentMan Nov 30, 2006, 06:54 PM I believe it's turn 50.
Bronze working is in, and I have a source of copper right outside my borders. I can't see any in Ginger's territory so far, but there's so much black (and land) over there that I doubt he lacks it.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e194/TitanicWhiz18/PBEM/Turn048-Regentia.jpg
I picked archery so I can get decent city defenders. Plus, horse archers kind of need bows.
Stonehenge = :smoke: ? The early :gp: will aid my income.
Gogf Dec 04, 2006, 07:00 PM Stonehenge isn't the worst decision in the world, but I'd get a couple more workers sometime in the near future.
RegentMan Dec 19, 2006, 02:10 PM Ladies and gentlemen, look at the latest feat achieved by Regentia!
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e194/TitanicWhiz18/PBEM/Turn0xx-Stonehenge.jpg
And utilizing our great calendar, we know the world is round! Check it out:
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e194/TitanicWhiz18/PBEM/Turn0xx-Global.jpg
:goodjob: Some workers are next. I'm going to get an archer or two out to cover up my cardboard-cutout defenders.
BCLG100 Dec 19, 2006, 02:30 PM why are you going for poly? you already have a religion-you dont need another.
RegentMan Dec 20, 2006, 05:30 PM I figured temples would help me with the lack of luxuries.
But that's priesthood, not polytheism. I don't know.
DaveMcW Dec 20, 2006, 06:34 PM Peter is the #1 punching bag in most of my games. Build some horse archers and axes and go "re-found" hinduism.
RegentMan Dec 31, 2006, 10:35 AM Ginger declares war on me by moving a woodsman level two warrior onto my grassland forested hill, to explore my lands. :(
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e194/TitanicWhiz18/Turn065-War.jpg
That warrior will speed across my lands while having a defensive bonus. Hopefully he'll slip up and wander onto a farm...
RegentMan Jan 24, 2007, 11:40 AM Long time, no update!
Ginger's warrior has sped around my lands, but really causing no trouble. He has been hiding in Caesar's territory whenever he gets close to being surrounded. I've hooked up my horses to get a two-move unit. Hopefully, that'll be able to end the Scourge of Ale!
My Stonehenge build has produced my first :gp: ! He was used to build:
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e194/TitanicWhiz18/PBEM/Turn082-Mahabodhi.jpg
The Mahabodhi! Hopefully Buddhism will spread. Speaking of religions, Ginger_Ale has used the Oracle to grab Confucianism! Peter is Hindu, and Caesar is Jewish (Tokugawa is also Jewish). I'm not going to have many friends.
Since Ginger has at least three cities, I felt it was time to get another one or two founded. I was thinking site three, followed by site two in quick sucession:
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e194/TitanicWhiz18/PBEM/Turn082-Regentia.jpg
:)
BCLG100 Jan 24, 2007, 02:44 PM plon a city near toku or julius and attempt to get judaism in there or hinduism with peter. either way you want to get a religion that the AI has so you can then use it to sway them into battering GA.
RegentMan Feb 10, 2007, 02:01 PM Peace has finally returned to the world! The maurading warrior Ginger_Ale sent through my lands fell right into the well-planned Regentian trap, and is now slain. The Third Ginger-Regentian War is over. Vive la Regentia!
Two new cities have been founded recently. I decided against two northern sites in order to grab my only iron with UN City. I'm thinking the next city should also go in the south, to combat Ginger's presence there.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e194/TitanicWhiz18/PBEM/Turn094-Regentia.jpg
RegentMan Mar 14, 2007, 11:30 AM I just founded N'est-ce Pas this turn. Julius can be persuaded to open borders with me, but I decided to wait until the south can be tamed. He has very few cities, and I'd like to keep it that way.
Northern Regentia:
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e194/TitanicWhiz18/PBEM/Turn113-NorthRegentia.jpg
Southern Regentia:
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e194/TitanicWhiz18/PBEM/Turn113-SouthRegentia.jpg
dutchfire Mar 14, 2007, 12:57 PM Is that Gingers land to the east of your new city?
It will have serious cultural pressure.
RegentMan Mar 14, 2007, 03:06 PM It will. I'm hoping stonehenge's free obelisk and a soon to be produced missionary will get some basic culture started, then produce a couple of religious buildings.
DaveMcW Mar 14, 2007, 03:11 PM Who will reach Guilds first?
RegentMan Mar 22, 2007, 12:38 PM Who will reach Guilds first?
I think Ginger has a slight lead on guilds right now. If I see it pop up before I get it, then spears/pikes are my friend.
Ginger_Ale has declared war upon me for the fourth time. Here's the battlefield:
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e194/TitanicWhiz18/PBEM/Turn116-FourthWar.jpg
Well, he declared only to see the battle odds. That chariot was on my borders, and the heck I'm going to trust Ginger_Ale not to cross over my borders. So, I defended the hill tile, and he retreated. He wants to make peace, and I have sent him a peace offer. I need to build up peacefully, and, well, get ten guaranteed turns of peace from him!
:splat:
RegentMan Apr 11, 2007, 06:04 PM Well, another update from the R-Man. It appears that my colleague Ginger_Ale doesn't care about his fans here in the MTDG. Know that one of us does! :goodjob:
A few interesting events:
Ginger_Ale has yet to make peace with me. :hmm:
Julius Caesar converted from Judaism (his founded religion) to Buddhism (on his own)!
I've opened borders with Rome, as I've founded cities in the right spots.
Tokugawa declared war on Caesar after I sent the last save, so I was surprised to see Caesar contact me with an offer to declare war on Japan!
Needing one ally in this cruel world, I declare war on Tokugawa! I capture a worker.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e194/TitanicWhiz18/PBEM/Turn126-WorkerCapture.jpg
Although I've permanently soured my relations with Peter (Tokugawa's religious ally). We're looking to start a Rome and Regentia vs. Japan, Russia, and Spain here!
RegentMan May 10, 2007, 09:14 PM As you might remember, I am at war with Japan. Here is what awaits them:
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e194/TitanicWhiz18/PBEM/Turn142-OsakasDemise.jpg
I also have Buddism present in one of Ginger's cities. :)
DaveMcW May 11, 2007, 10:50 AM That's a looong time to research currency. You might want to consider investing in cottages. ;)
dutchfire May 11, 2007, 10:57 AM 640 AD, and not a single cottage? Are you running an odd variant rules game here RM?
(And judging by your tech pace, you're not running many scientists either.)
RegentMan May 12, 2007, 06:34 PM I knew cottages were important, but I didn't realize how much so. Plans are in motion to build quite a few, with construction beginning this turn (143. I captured Osaka!).
Robi D May 13, 2007, 06:28 AM The problem with that is cottages take time to grow, so there effects on kick in later so they need to be built early.
It might be an idea not to keep any captured cities as the maintenance will kill you. Also might be worth extorting Toku for peace;)
BCLG100 May 13, 2007, 12:09 PM or you may as well wait now till emancipation.
DaveMcW May 13, 2007, 04:16 PM At his current rate, he'll never get emancipation.
BCLG100 May 13, 2007, 05:29 PM Seems to have more farms than anything else right now, can bulb his way there and then trade for the rest of what he needs.
RegentMan May 30, 2007, 11:28 AM I have made peace with Tokugawa, netting some gold and gold per turn in the process (I didn't have the manpower to do more damage and get techs without hurting my destroyed economy anymore). Now I am focused on two things:
Cottage building and production
Spearman training
My biggest fear is having Ginger_Ale destroy me with conquistadors. He is much further ahead of me in technology, unfortunately.
Northern Regentia
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e194/TitanicWhiz18/PBEM/Turn157-NorthRegentia.jpg
Southern Regentia
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e194/TitanicWhiz18/PBEM/Turn157-SouthRegentia.jpg
RegentMan Jun 04, 2007, 01:38 PM I have completed currency, much earlier than the expected Turn 186 completion.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e194/TitanicWhiz18/PBEM/Turn161-Currency.jpg
Markets will be going up next turn in my three research cities. I'll be getting another great prophet in four turns. I'll probably add him to a city to make the most of his five :gold: .
RegentMan Aug 30, 2007, 11:38 AM A whole summer without an update! Poor guys.
Well, really only two big things have happened. The first is that Peter has opened borders with me, so I have taken that opportunity to spread Buddhism throughout his empire, netting me some much needed gpt.
The other big thing:
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e194/TitanicWhiz18/PBEM/MTDGCageMatch-1320AD1.jpg
And in even more  news:
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e194/TitanicWhiz18/PBEM/MTDGCageMatch-1320AD2.jpg
I bet Ginger is mere turns from completing it, but let the records show I beat him to it! The backward Regentians have beat the Spanish at something! Suggestions for my newfound knowledge?
And an overview:
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e194/TitanicWhiz18/PBEM/MTDGCageMatch-1320AD3.jpg
BCLG100 Aug 31, 2007, 06:50 PM Maybe you should see about trading it around so your not, y'know, so technologically retarded...
General_W Sep 06, 2007, 12:37 PM Yeah, since GingerAle is likely almost to Guilds anyway, I'd certainly trade it around to get as much as I can for it. Then you might want to think about putting those Camel Archers to good use against the Japanese.
But I'm not sure where Tokugawa is at on the Power Graph in relation to you?
Robi D Sep 07, 2007, 10:39 PM between peter and jc you should be able to get a few techs for it, its not like your going to gain anything by keeping it to yourself
