I'll probably start as Venice because I've enjoyed a number of games as them on Europa Universalis. Milan will probably be the target so that I can unite Italy. I will probably unlock all the nations by editing the relevant file if it is the same as RTW as I don't appreciate having to defeat particular nations to be able to play as them.

The Holy Roman Empire. Expand first East, then wheel around and capture Southern Europe, and proceed on to Western Europe.

I don't know, when I used to play MTW the Papacy actually built up a pretty sizeable empire. That is until the Imperial Army of Byzantium conquered them in the name of their God, Tank Guy#3.

Cool. So the Pope will actually take settlements and build empires? Good, I thought he was like SPQR in Rome: Just stayed there and did nothing.

It was the most formidable fortress at the time. with triple walls all around some 20km in a single half circle so something like 60+km of defences. It was eventually plunded by the crusaders and taken by turks.

turks did finally manage to take it after the city had been deverstaed by the plague and Byzatines fleet (which she reamined a major navel power for a long time) was in financial ruin. And still the Turks had to fight a tough battle.

HRE.

First, expands northeast. Prussia and Livonia are Germans (that means that the whole intermediate provinces are germans too). Once time I had these two, let europe to europeans, so, russians MUST be expulsed from map, to only live in middle asian stepes (with mongols, after all, they are mongols:crazyeye: ). With Central and Northeastern Europe in Teutonic Hands (this means I concentred i "east crusades" and let Jerusalem to other christians) I go for Poland and far north. Denmark and Poland are not a problem anymore and now I take control of north sea. Rout hungarians provinces going south, to place a feet near Constantinople, maybe stoping by a minute in Khazar.
By this time I had a concrete map area, very dificult to invade succesfully. Now, intrigate to get frenchs or italians excommunicated, and launch my teutonic knights through those heretics ex-good christians. If attack Italy, prevent do not touching Pope... Crusades are always a nice weapon.

Take the other one and relegate Spain to Peninsula (if they were conquered by arabs, send them back to Africa), and England to island territories. Control continental Europe, and stablish sea routes.
In this moment, Turks must be fighting with byzantines, so attack them two and take Crimea (if it was Byzantine), Byzantium, Greece, Nicaea and parts of minor Asia.

Now it is time to let peace to the Empire. But peace is only the preparation time for next war... Massively attack and launch crusades to Holy Land...

That is the master plan for Old World domination..:king:
After that, going into retirement and live from your empires interests...:goodjob: (wich means, inertia makes your empires grow and take Africa and the latest provinces...

go to Medieval II Total War\data\world\maps\campaign\imperial_campaign\des cr_strat.txt and just copy/paste the countries you want from unlockable/unplayable to playable and you're done. Dead easy.

First thing I did was unlock Scotland

Kan' Sharuminar
Nov 19, 2006, 02:49 PM
It's not much of a task. Only took me the better part of the day to wipe out France and Scotland, and to be fair the delay was mostly due to me feeling a bit guilty about breaking an alliance.

If the task for unlocking a faction was purely conquering it - and nothing about winning a game - then that might be considered a better challenge-reward system. As it stands, it's just pointless.

Nov 19, 2006, 02:52 PM

Just wondering, does the short campaign unlock them all as well?

I basically unlocked scotland by itself then completed the Full Campaign, in a day. The lands ran red. Still that unlocked everyone else, and I thought it fitting.

*sigh* well, Almost. There was 2 Catholic factions left, the Islamic factions were reduced to the Moors...who had 2 provinces in Africa. And then there was the Timurids and the Mongols. (who had the eastern map pretty much to themselves).

It got to the point that I would get excommunicated, and it didn't mean anything other than "oh more directions to expand in".

Dell19
Nov 20, 2006, 01:10 PM
Oddly I've been friendly with the Pope for all of my game so far. Hasn't stopped four Catholic nations being in a constant state of war with me although it is now three nations as Sicily were wiped out. Am basically waiting for Milan to excommunicated again.

In this version of MTW what happens if you wipe out the pope? In the old game a new Pope would always reappear roughly every 5 years or something like that.

Kal'thzar
Nov 20, 2006, 02:23 PM
From what I gathered, he would ask catholic factions for a region. Then love them to bits if they did....

Maybe they horde? (would that make sense?)...Bah, I'll find out, I wonder if the auto-cal cheat still works....and what it is.

Dell19
Nov 20, 2006, 04:11 PM
I might try and grab Rome then at some point and unite Italy.

Kal'thzar
Nov 20, 2006, 04:25 PM
You have to, to win the HRE Long Campaign. So I assume its nothing TOO big.

On another note, in my recent game the Papal states started to expand, they took Florence from Milan (who had been excommunicated), I'm going to attempt the same thing with Sicily (get them excom'd), Build the Papal states up a bit :p

Dell19
Nov 20, 2006, 05:03 PM
Another question on a similar topic, how do you check whether a faction has been excommunicated?

-0blivion-
Nov 20, 2006, 05:20 PM
@ Dell

Click on the shield (faction summary window), click on The Papacy tab, then hover your mouse over the number of crosses and an appropriate comment will appear, one of which is 'His Holiness has denounced this faction and it has been excommunicated from the catholic faith' or somesuch.

Dell19

Yes, on H/VH difficulty if I remember correctly. Don't expect favors from the Pope, at least until a new one is elected. (You may want to try speed up this process. ;))

Forging alliances is good, and the diplomacy is improved, as they won't backstab you all the time much like in R:TW. However, what you WILL see is enemies making alliances with fellow enemies and striking you together. Good tactics indeed by the AI.

Expect a bloody war with Milan. These are powerful, and will backstab you at the first oppurtunity. My tactic is to turn Bologna into a castle, as it will grow quickly, therefore giving you good units such as Zwei-Handers quickly. Keep Bologna well defended, and expect a possible war with Venice.

France is a good ally, as they may help you with Milan if they wish to conquer Italy, and they won't backstab you. (They didn't me.) Milan are tough, and will attack you regularly with full stacks. This war will be costly.

I had to give up as the HRE, as I got over-run by Milan and Venice, and I was heading toward having no money at all. Expect a tough time with the Holy Roman Empire.

Good luck. ;)
