View Full Version : Welcome to the Railroads forum! Thunderfall Oct 22, 2006, 11:53 AM We decided to create a forum for Sid and Firaxis's newest title: Sid Meier's Railroads!. Have fun discussing the game here! :) Red Door Oct 22, 2006, 12:19 PM Good idea on the forum. Krupo Oct 23, 2006, 01:19 AM Good call, Thunderfall. :) Godwynn Oct 24, 2006, 01:36 AM Ahhh! I love this game! Thank You! teccuk Nov 06, 2006, 10:30 AM Wow have to admit, i was surprised to find this forum here! Unfortunatley my pc won't handle it (it won't run CIV4 either). I had to post because i had this message at the top of the screen "Hello teccuk, it appears that you have not posted on our forums in several weeks. Why not take a few moments to ask a question, help provide a solution, or participate in a discussion in any one of our forums?" How lovely. Abaddon Nov 12, 2006, 05:46 PM Well we do miss you... AlabamaCajun Nov 30, 2006, 10:54 PM Thank you for hosting SMRR. Lets create some excitement and ideas then hopefully Firaxis will notice. It's a great game, reminds me of Civ4  that I've yet to get. SuperSatan3 Oct 20, 2007, 12:48 AM Are we allowed to talk about earlier incarnations of Railroads(Railroad Tycoon 1-3)? AlabamaCajun Oct 20, 2007, 07:35 AM Yes. At this point there is just one SMRR sub-forum. Other forums may have sub-forums 1,2 and 3 but here it's just one. Silv Something Sep 15, 2009, 09:02 AM Since this is Sticky-ed, I guess it's okay to bump it for a good reason. I have RT3. I like it a lot, especial the complex supply and demand system. The regular level is still a good challenge for me. I also have Civ IV. So should I get railroads, or stick with RT3? Greybriar Sep 17, 2009, 08:56 AM ....I have RT3. Railroads! is a different type of game. It is not Railroad Tycoon IV. If you like model railroads, you will probably like it. It's all a matter of personal preference. Silv Something Sep 17, 2009, 04:37 PM Okay. I think I'll stick with RT3 then. WhiteEagle22 Oct 22, 2009, 12:59 PM I'm curious: How much is the game going for in retail store? I'm considering getting this game, as I have the demo on my PC, and I love it. Modeltrainman Oct 22, 2009, 01:02 PM I've gotten it in a jewel case for $10.You'll probably find it for $20.It's incredibly fun! If you don't mind shopping online, Newegg (http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832262018&Tpk=Sid%20Meier%27s%20Railroads!) is selling it in the retail box for $9.99 (Canadian, I think). Krupo Oct 25, 2009, 01:32 AM I'm quoting from the link you just shared " Cons: It was fun until the debilitating crashes started. frequent crashes that simple killed the video, forcing a hard restart. i downloaded the patch and it fixed the first stage, but the rest crashed. its really too bad this could have went down as a great one. Other Thoughts: where was QA? really? seriously? What were they thinking releasing this game before it's done." Sadly I have to "+1" at that. The game is TONS of fun, but every time I'm tempted to load it up again I recall how much it falls on its face with super-nasty crashes. I wonder if anyone has installed the game on a Windows 7 box - has that magically added any stability? Darth Fred May 23, 2010, 05:06 PM I know the thrill of this, for most of you anyway, has come and gone. I JUST got this game yesterday though, (Late bloomer?) so if any of you are still around and still playing we'll have something to chat about. So far so good with the Vista OS. Only one crash and that was after more than an hour. It wasn't a big map though. In fact, it was the first one. I'm taking a tentative "We'll see" approach at this point. Because of that, I'm holding off on the 1.1 patch to make sure I don't exasperate any RAM issues that might exist. I've also got a good friend coming to visit in a couple of weeks and he's quite the IT whiz. I'm looking forward to getting things hammered out then. I hope we can because so far I'm in LOVE with this game! :woohoo: F SuperSatan3 May 24, 2010, 01:01 AM I believe that the only issue you will have is on larger maps, especially on high graphics. You might want to download a 3 gigabyte switch. (http://www.vfxpedia.com/index.php?title=FAQ/3GB_Switch) Darth Fred May 25, 2010, 01:28 PM I believe that the only issue you will have is on larger maps, especially on high graphics. You might want to download a 3 gigabyte switch. (http://www.vfxpedia.com/index.php?title=FAQ/3GB_Switch) I'll keep that in mind. F dalamb May 25, 2010, 01:31 PM The 3Gb switch warnings looked pretty scary! I don't think I'm ready to try that for my XP problems with Railroads. I uninstalled it because every map I tried but the first crashed when I reached what I'd consider the "mid-game". Too bad -- up to that point it was a lot of fun. SuperSatan3 May 26, 2010, 02:15 AM The switch is a pretty simple program, if you are that worried, just back up the .exe, and everything else should be easily reversible. I am curious as to how people managed trains. I always had twice as many trains as CPU opponents, because I got confused otherwise. The automatic lubricator was always a god-send. obi Jul 27, 2010, 02:20 PM I just got myself hooked on Civ IV Revolutions, which led me to look up what else was available and discovered Sid Meier's Railroads. Downloaded the demo and naturally I simply have to get the game. Problem is, I am seeing all these complaints about crashing. My system is Vista 64, so am I going to end up frustrated? or do these fixes really help? I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who is playing on one of the newer systems. I have a Gateway "Super Gaming PC", it's less than a year old, it's very cool but it's hard when you can't play your older games or older games that are new to the player. Oops, I meant to start a new topic, I hope it's ok I posted in this thread since it is related. Sorry about that. Oops, I meant to start a new topic, I hope it's ok I posted in this thread since it is related. Sorry about that. I'm running Vista 64 s well. The problem though is that my lap top only has two gig RAM to begin with. I've got the "fix" all set up and ready to go, but until I drop the $$$ for a stick of RAM, I'm afraid I can't answer your question. I wish you luck though because it really is a blast to play. F obi Jul 28, 2010, 03:41 PM Well I gave in to temptation and ordered it from Amazon today anyway. I really hope it works, if not I will have to sneak it into work and play on this system which is xp. I'll just tell customers and the telephone to go to...um to go away so I can play. :goodjob: SuperSatan3 Jul 28, 2010, 06:37 PM All you have to do is download the 3 GB enabler, which I've posted a link to in several topics already. The main issue with Railroads is the AI, and the lack of people who play this game multiplayer. Still, the single player content should keep you entertained for awhile. obi Jul 30, 2010, 12:07 PM I play single player anyway so that means I won't have an issue? Cool. I am completely addicted to the demo and can't wait for the full game to arrive, I had to order it from Amazon. obi Aug 05, 2010, 06:02 PM Ha! Like I was going to wait that long, I bought it as a direct download. It played beautifully for a week before it started crashing so I have downloaded the patch and am off right now to try this other fix you guys have mentioned. Love this game! Hold on, the site with that switch says it has to be win xp compatible, I thought it was to fix the crashing on vista, Help please? Darth Fred Aug 05, 2010, 06:17 PM Ha! Failing all else, you might try contacting him. F Krupo Aug 07, 2010, 01:11 AM It's a fantastically fun game and every time I see a new post pop up here I'm tempted to load it up again - but be aware that the "bigger"/"messier" your train table (game) gets, the likelier that it'll crash. Thank goodness on a fast PC you can reload quickly, and autosave is pretty quick/frequent if you set it up properly - but this game does have some technical issues with regards to stability from what I've seen - and what many here have also noted. I don't think there's a "magic bullet" which will ever make it super stable, unfortunately. dalamb Aug 07, 2010, 08:53 AM I don't think there's a "magic bullet" which will ever make it super stable, unfortunately.Do you mean that you tried the 3GB enabler and still got crashes? SuperSatan3 Aug 08, 2010, 04:19 AM It seems all crashes are directly related to Memory. so... 1.) Turn down graphic settings to low 2.) use the 3GB enabler I am on Vista, and have 4 gigs of ram, and it is plenty stable for me. I still get the occasional crash every 2 or 3 games and sometimes have the missing track bug. obi Aug 27, 2010, 01:53 PM My pc has 12 gigs of ram, a gig of video memory but it still crashes once my maps start getting more complicated, or as one poster put it, messier. I also have to leave the settings on default, which means most of them are just on medium. Miles Teg Apr 01, 2011, 10:41 PM Alright, we're going to have to conserve space in the Underground Off Topic, so this thread is going to be the combined politics and religion section. Opening points: Every idea ever expressed by a Republican is wrong. I found this stuff on Wikipedia about how everything in the New Testament is really stolen from Goosebumps. Obama is the awesomest president ever. And Kathleen Sebelius is an awesome secretary of Health and Human Services. Just throwing that out there. I think abortion should be mandatory. Joecoolyo Apr 02, 2011, 12:04 AM I'm angry at Obama for not including Death Panels in the healthcare bill  Always rolling over to conservative interests! Miles Teg Apr 03, 2011, 04:30 PM This is a serious super thread. Don't drag you silly spam into it, Secret OT doesn't have enough room or moderation for those luxuries. Anyways, I want to see Sarah Palin's "long form birth certificate", if you know what I mean. :groucho: Joecoolyo Apr 04, 2011, 04:17 PM I didn't realize Sarah Palin's a dude. :p GamezRule Apr 09, 2011, 01:23 AM Or black... |
