View Full Version : Can I 'turn off' Culture?
mellman Oct 25, 2006, 08:55 AM I'm playing a multiplayer game, and I'm playing as American, My culture is exploding. I'm 80% research 0% culture. I am not building massive culture buildings, yet somehow My borders are about to take over my neighbors cities.
I dont want to take them over, because we've been allies but he probably will not take too kindly to me taking over two of them via culture :)
Any way to turn it off?
Bast Oct 25, 2006, 09:39 AM Tell him to build more cultural improvements!

Why would that be a problem? Does winning the game upset you?
automator Oct 25, 2006, 01:09 PM Does a city's rebellion to your side actually harm that civ's opinion of you? I've never noticed a negative modifier for "You culture flipped our city".

Sisiutil Oct 25, 2006, 02:01 PM You do get a diplomatic demerit for close borders, though.
There's no easy way to "turn off" culture, though you could reduce it by changing civics. Free Religion and Free Speech both increase your cities' cultural output, so switching away from those civics might do the trick.
Frankly, though, I'd just look for other ways to make up for the diplomatic demerit with your ally. Adopt their favourite civic, give them a gift and/or a few trades that are lopsided to their benefit.
You could also take the city, build up its cultural improvements, and then give it back to them.
Jet Oct 25, 2006, 02:55 PM Once you flip the city that actually tends to relieve the diplo modifier, because the next city after that isn't so pressured.
Furthermore, flipping is awesome. It totally just proves the badassity of your Civ.

Plus it doesn't suffer the loss of buildings like when you conquer a city by war. (Many culture producing buildings still disappear though).
sylvanllewelyn Oct 25, 2006, 07:39 PM Originally, I thought it was impractical to flip cities, as you usually need the next level of culture to do it, and the scale's logrithmic. However, I did notice that in a lot of my cultural victory games, when I turn the slider up a lot, I'm almost certain to flip a couple cities, so yes, it's definitely possible to be culturally aggressive (and like real life, it costs a lot of money). But don't do it for too long if you aren't doing a cultural victory, or you will fall hopelessly behind in tech. Don't worry too much about the modifier, the most you can get is -4. Open borders, fair trade relations and Universal sufferage (you make friends with the powerful ones right?) will negate that.
If you're trying to attack someone culturally, you're not really thinking of a diplomatic victory, are you? You're really aiming for space race, as you can't afford unhappy citizens in a war.
Zophos Oct 25, 2006, 10:56 PM Um....for everyone who's posting about the negative diplo modifiers...keep in mind that the OP is talking about a multiplayer game. So he's probably concerned about another HUMAN player taking exception to him flipping a city or two at the border.
Jet Oct 26, 2006, 01:52 AM Real people should pop up plus/minus tooltips when you mouse over them. It would make things so much easier with the opposite sex.

Exactly, people seem to read uncarefully, it is multiplayer. Although I am not a multiplayer, I guess one of the few things you could do is advice the other one to build more culture and gift him his city's back when they flip. One can hardly be mad at the other for lacking to build culture yourself..
automator Oct 26, 2006, 02:22 PM Well, this guy's competitor in MP needs to wake up to the fact that:
A) he needs more culture buildings
B) he's placing his cities improperly (you don't drop a city in the desert three tiles from your neighbor's city in some grasslands)
C) he's not going to win by not paying attention to A and B
