View Full Version : Starting Position
nilsmo Oct 31, 2006, 04:21 PM In this case, what would you do with your settler (note: already moved the warrior SE)?

johnny_rico Oct 31, 2006, 04:32 PM I would found your first city in place, farm the floodplains, mine the hills, and build as many workshops as possible. This will serve as a nice production city. Looks like you're on the north end of town. With any luck, you should be able to find more floodplains/resources/grasslands to the south which will make for a nice cottaged city. It is here, I would eventually think about relocating the palace.
Nestorius Oct 31, 2006, 04:32 PM Park him right there on the hill.
King.Bahamot Oct 31, 2006, 04:37 PM 1n and you get fishes or something in the big cross ;)
cleverhandle Oct 31, 2006, 04:49 PM Settle on the spot. The extra production from settling on a plains hill is a nice boost. Also, the map generator tends to give you decent resources for your capital, so I almost always give the "blue circle" the benefit of the doubt for starting positions. There's a decent chance that there's a horse or copper resource waiting for you that I wouldn't want to miss.
I can see the argument for moving 1N (getting the seafood in the fat cross), but doing that loses you 3 choppable forests and the plains hill bonus, besides any possible revealed resources as described above. Chances are good that a second city can use the seafood, and with deer + 2 flood plains you won't be hurting for food in the capitol. I'm also not sure whether 1N will be considered a fresh water location or not, though as long as the city is at least coastal that's not a huge deal to me.
ChicagoCubs Oct 31, 2006, 04:54 PM Moving one space north also appears to result in two tundra spots. Without scouting those tiles first, I woulnd't risk it just for the fish.
King.Bahamot Oct 31, 2006, 06:08 PM those 2 tundra spots wont be used if I played the game anyway. Fishy gives nice food For my se :P
Kurbads Nov 01, 2006, 03:21 AM I would go one spot to right, to have more grassland in right below, to get fish, ramain on flood during first culture borders. You have fishing as starting tech, dont You?
King.Bahamot Nov 01, 2006, 03:33 AM yea, what leader are you? :)
VoiceOfUnreason Nov 01, 2006, 04:44 AM I'd park, but I'm sympathetic to other choices. The free production and extra defense for the archers is nice, the food is a bit weak, but I'm not at all fond of unimprovable tiles - 2 squares of coastline is as much as I want.
I might regret this if the seafood gets blocked off.
Is this patched or unpatched? I trust the newer evaluator more than I do the old one.
nilsmo Nov 01, 2006, 06:37 AM Warlords v1.00 as Julius Caesar on Monarch, playing for a Praet rush. I have a grudge against the map generator, so I moved:
I moved one square up, and popped the hut. The hut gave me a scout! :D I moved the scout SE, and it revealed pigs that would be in my fat cross if I settled on the plains hill. The plains hill gives me a production bonus that's very nice for the beginning of the game, so I went back to the plains hill, and settled on the next turn. Lost a turn, but guaranteed myself a good starting position. I worked the flood plains, and my city was doing quite well in the first few turns: 5 food, 2 shields and 10 commerce with a population of one. And I'm next to a river, a coast, at least three resources and a fair amount of forest :) Probably should have trusted the map generator a little more, though. (There's also a blue square 2 squares down, hinting at a resource somewhere near.)
cabert Nov 02, 2006, 06:36 AM Even with the pig lost, I still think 1N is stronger.
Of course settling on a hill has good advantages, but a seafood ressource is usually safe from harm by barbs, allow you to grow while improving it and is more likely to be totally lost (meaning no option for another city to work it).
Still, pigs + deers + flood plains is enough food for a while...
go praetorians ;)
