View Full Version : The Two-Headed Cow, A Publick House
Sir Bugsy Nov 04, 2006, 12:16 PM :band:
"Take a turn, Take our fortune,
They called the club, The Two-Headed Cow"
- from "Pilgrimage" by R.E.M.
After a half hour of roaming the streets of Innovia, I have yet to find any drinking establishment. In fact, I find no place where one can even sit down with friends, have a  and discuss the day.
So I decided to open a pub so that we can do just that.
Let me introduce myself. My name is Bugsy, or Bugs. Please do not add any titles to my name. I am a long time Civ III player and while I purchased Civ IV the day it came out, I am not that experienced with it. Therefore, as a member of this team, I will do the other things I am good at: socialize, bring people together, play music :band: , and drink  .
Some pub rules:
1. Be courteous to your fellow pub goers.
2. If you drink too much, don't drive, I can put you up for the night. We have a few rooms upstairs. And no they aren't available for that. This is a respectable establishment.
3. Lively discussion on any topic is allowed and encouraged.
4. Don't be boarish. I don't want to have to have Guido escort you to the door.
5. If you need to fight, take it outside.
6. Friday is open mic night. You can have the microphone for five minutes. You can share poems, lyrics, music or a story. After five minutes we cut you off, unless it is really good.
7. We will honor the Sabbath. Therefore, only wine will be served on Sunday.
We need some musicians for the house band on Friday nights. You don't need to be good, I'm not. You just need to have tolerance for lousy music and a good sense of humor.
We also have an opening for another bartender.
And with that, let the party begin.

Sir Bugsy Nov 04, 2006, 12:22 PM From the other thread, we now have three folks in the band. Mauer is on keyboard, and Theoden will be playing guitar or bass as needed. More musicians are welcome. The more the merrier. For example, the band I play with in RL has 14 members.
Mauer Nov 04, 2006, 12:32 PM Finally, a place where I'm not afraid to say something for fear of being laughed at! Although that's mostly cause the lights are dim  Anyways, I'll take a coffee with 2 equals. I also play the harmonica, not with any real ability, but I can make noise as good as any 3 year old with pots and pans ;)
dutchfire Nov 04, 2006, 12:38 PM Give me a drink, after my mistake of forgetting to offer open borders.
Sir Bugsy Nov 04, 2006, 12:59 PM A coffee for the warlord and a stiff drink for the Dutchman.
Hey, if not offering OB is the worst thing you've done today, you're doing fine. Is the world going to come to an end? naaaah.
And Mauer, nice to see someone who speaks Latin. :D
dutchfire Nov 04, 2006, 01:06 PM Well, it's still pretty stupid, as I thought: "finally, we will get open borders, now I''l first go and offer them", and then I forgot!
:hammer2:
Sir Bugsy Nov 04, 2006, 01:08 PM Here, have another
Theoden Nov 04, 2006, 01:16 PM Can I have something strong? All this dealing with Aloha makes me thirsty. :)
dutchfire Nov 04, 2006, 01:17 PM At least we've got Open Borders now! (If they accept)
Sir Bugsy Nov 04, 2006, 01:23 PM A strong drink for the Dane.
I have met the Alohaian BCLG in a past life. His friends call him Simon. He's a pretty straight shooter. He wasn't old enough to have a beer when I met him, but a nice kid.
Mauer Nov 04, 2006, 01:26 PM Ok gentlemen (ladies if we got'em),
I have a question about MP games, and I only want the opinion of my fellow teammates, and the infamous Sir Bugsy. Say you're in an MP game, two nations at war (not you), and one of them conquering cities left and right. Is it fairplay to pillage all the tiles surrounding the newly conquered cities? And even further, if it is fairplay would you do it?
dutchfire Nov 04, 2006, 01:33 PM *cough* did I see Robboo make a post like this in the pitboss thread?*
I think it depends on your relationship with the new owner of the cities. If it's a ally, you shouldn't. But if you're having a cold war with them anyway, do anything you can to screw him!
this is my 1300th post, and your 1500? [party]
Sir Bugsy Nov 04, 2006, 01:35 PM I actually haven't played any MP games. I know that when I have conquered cities in the past in both Civ III and Civ IV against the AI or in the demo game, I have advocated pillaging. It is essentially the tried and true "scorched earth" tactic of Napolean. However, just like in 1812, it can sometime backfire on you.
I would caution to use it with care.
Drinks all around for the 1300th and 1500th posts!
Mauer Nov 04, 2006, 01:46 PM *cough* did I see Robboo make a post like this in the pitboss thread?*
:mischief:
Yeah, it was me. Not only me! But it was me that got caught
He tried to get me to tell him the others, but I'm no snitch. Just a dirty pillager. Anyways, I gave him all the gold I had collected (roughly 300 gold!) and some gems. I'm actually thinking of retiring from the game. I can't win the game. At this point I'm just trying out new things. This is actually my first MP, and after talking to one of the others that is pillaging (who seems to have a better than fair honor code) I really didn't think it was a "cry foul" type issue. Maybe a "I'll declare on you" issue, but I didn't think tears would come from it.
1889 Nov 04, 2006, 05:54 PM Great, an on-line bar! That's perfect because Bethel is a dry town.
The last time I got to a bar was last winter while visiting in-laws in Nebraska. I got suckered into being designated driver while they watched a football game in a sports bar!
I hate sports…and loud places.
I'll have a double Morgan and coke, straight up if you please.
Sir Bugsy Nov 04, 2006, 06:45 PM The Alaskan gets the Captain with some coke.
so how's it going with you?
DaveShack Nov 05, 2006, 12:17 AM Nice place ya got here. I can't partake in RL due to cholesterol meds  , but virtual booze only causes virtual liver damage.
I'd like a piña colada, frozen please. :)
Mauer, in your place I might have ignored robboo's theatrics, especially if your neighbor to the north was one of your partners in crime. My approach (which I admit led to my early demise) was to limit the boot licking to what I could stomach, which wasn't much. :crazyeye: In this case, I wonder if it might have ended up the world vs robboo if he went too far overboard. Hmm, gotta visit the thread again and see what's new. :D
I could accidentally click on the wrong spot and kick robboo to AI at an inopportune (for him) moment... :mischief: Nah, gotta play the even-handed and honorable host, but it's tempting!
dutchfire Nov 05, 2006, 08:23 AM Anyone interested in setting up a SG for the team, for learning and fun?
Sir Bugsy Nov 05, 2006, 12:29 PM I would very much be interested in a Civ IV SG to steepen the learning curve.
A virtual frozen piña colada for the inventor from the desert. Since it is Sunday you get a dash of communion wine in it.
1889 Nov 05, 2006, 12:48 PM An SG is an interesting idea. How about we set it up with the same Civs as this game on Emperor difficulty?
Theoden Nov 05, 2006, 02:00 PM I'll be interested as well. :)
Mauer Nov 05, 2006, 03:04 PM I'm not terribly good at SG's, but I'd be willing to give it a go.
Sir Bugsy Nov 05, 2006, 06:58 PM Playing in an SG isn't the hard part. You play ten turns and hand it off. What's hard is the game, just like anything else.
I am about to move up to prince level, so let's do this game two levels above that.
dutchfire Nov 06, 2006, 09:45 AM So we've got so far:
Sir Bugsy
1889
Mauer
Theoden
Dutchfire
DaveShack
Leader: Saladin
Difficulty level: Emperor
Map size: Small
Speed: Normal
Map type: Pangaea
Other settings: Barbs on, permanent alliances on
Sir Bugsy Nov 06, 2006, 10:06 AM If you think it is too high, then bring it down. If I played it by myself I would probably lose
dutchfire Nov 06, 2006, 10:07 AM I think it could be done, if we use marathon or epic, and if we're a bit lucky with starting position.
DaveShack Nov 06, 2006, 10:22 AM I'd be interested in a SG but Emperor is way too high for me. I'm still working on getting above Noble.
I know, not a big confidence builder for the till-now primary turnplayer to be playing low difficulty... I think it's mainly a matter of playing solo games too fast. ;)
That reminds me, drinks on me for all the help playing the past 2 weeks. I've just gone through a week of all-day classes and a week of being sick, and it helped a lot to have the game carried forward on the days I crashed without even getting civ loaded. :D
dutchfire Nov 06, 2006, 10:24 AM Added you, thought you would be interested.
Who's going to play our save now btw?
Theoden Nov 06, 2006, 10:44 AM I'd prefer not to play marathon speed. It takes waaay too long for my taste.
Regarding difficulty, I can steamroll the AI's on noble and prince but if you all want a low difficulty I won't complain. I'll just tie one arm behind my back to make up for it. :p
dutchfire Nov 06, 2006, 12:02 PM I can steamroll prince too, and I'd take on noble with allways war, but the point is that there's quite a large difference between prince, monarch and emperor.
Mauer Nov 06, 2006, 04:44 PM I have beaten emperor, but my ratio is very unfavorably slanted to the L side. I'm with Bugsy on the difficulty setting though. And I really love pangea's :D I also find Marathon and epic extremely boring and slow. Standard would be my preference. Just my two cents.
Sir Bugsy Nov 06, 2006, 05:14 PM Dave buys a round for everyone.
Hey, just my $0.02 worth, but I don't think being a regular turn player needs to reflect a great deal of experience. Now when you get to a war turn, that is a whole different story. Things happen that can't be planned for. You need to have a thorough understanding of game mechanics in battle.
And that's why I'll be tending bar. :D
dutchfire Nov 07, 2006, 10:28 AM So we still need to decide on map size (My vote is small) and map type (my vote is pangaea).
If we're going to do small, we could put sea level on low, and add another AI.
Sir Bugsy Nov 07, 2006, 11:46 AM I'm easy. Whatever you guys think is good.
dutchfire Nov 08, 2006, 11:54 AM Everyone agrees with settings posted in post 24?
Then lets get this thing started!
Sir Bugsy Nov 08, 2006, 12:14 PM Sounds like a plan. Here's a toast to our new endeavor!
1889 Nov 08, 2006, 12:19 PM Can we make Ghandi, Catherine, Elizabeth and Qin Shi Huang as the AI's?
Mauer Nov 08, 2006, 01:22 PM Sounds good to me. Who's making the game, and can you post an opening screeny :D
dutchfire Nov 09, 2006, 08:43 AM I'll make it. Why these civs 1889?142076
142077
DaveShack Nov 09, 2006, 09:06 AM You'll put the SG in a different thread, right?
Theoden Nov 09, 2006, 09:09 AM Why these civs 1889?
I'm guessing it's because it's our opponents in the MTDG game. ;)
And yes, make a new thread for the SG.
1889 Nov 09, 2006, 09:14 AM Why these civs 1889
I just thought it would be more fun and educational to beat up on our MTDG enemies twice.
Who goes first, or do we discuss the start first?
dutchfire Nov 09, 2006, 09:20 AM Thread's up, please discuss there.
Sir Bugsy Nov 09, 2006, 08:50 PM SO is it just me, or are there not a lot of active members on this team?
Mauer Nov 09, 2006, 09:44 PM nope, not many active. I'd post enough here, but everyone is smarter than me. I say things and get ignored, so mostly I just spam occasionally.
Sir Bugsy Nov 09, 2006, 10:14 PM Gonna have to beat the bushes and get more folks involved. :whipped:
1889 Nov 09, 2006, 10:39 PM Don't just look at how many posts this forum gets per day, but consider posts per turn. I think we have 20-22 members in this forum and almost half of them are active posters.
Theoden Nov 10, 2006, 02:15 AM I guess some members joined and then got scared away immediately upon seeing the team forum. :p
Sir Bugsy Nov 10, 2006, 11:04 AM Maybe we'll just invite them down to the corner pub for a pint and just get them talking. It doesn't even have to game related. If people get to know one another, they will start to care about the game as well.
*runs off to find a local phone directory to make calls*
dutchfire Nov 10, 2006, 11:07 AM Maybe we should PM some of the older members like Veera and Sigma?
Theoden Nov 10, 2006, 12:52 PM Several of the formerly active members of our team are active elsewhere on this forum, and maybe they've just been waiting to return when the game had evolved to more than just hitting enter every turn. PM'ing them might work. :)
Mauer Nov 10, 2006, 03:18 PM Maybe we should get hockey sticks and whack'em till they come back in.
1889 Nov 10, 2006, 03:25 PM Hold on Mauer, I don't believe this forum supports torture, so water boarding is our only viable option.
Also Bugsy can offer a free e-drink.
Mauer Nov 10, 2006, 04:20 PM Well.....ok, but I'll keep my hockey stick handy none the less.
Theoden Nov 10, 2006, 04:43 PM *removes the attached spikes from hockey stick*
Or we could just invite them to a hockey match. :mischief:
Sir Bugsy Nov 10, 2006, 11:49 PM Friday is open mic night at the Cow!
Daghie's behind the drums, Theoden's on bass, Mauer's behind the keyboard and he's got his harp handy, I got my telecaster.
Here we go boys!
Here's a song about my college days. Yeah, that's a long time ago... last century. We'd drive up to College Park, Maryland from Annapolis for a real party. I drove a '73 Dodge Dart we called the Gray Whale and we'd cram about eight people into that thing. We used to go to this pub called The Rendezvous. There was so much muck on the floor you would wear the worst shoes you owned. We called 'em "Vous Shoes"
:band:
On a spring day, back in eighty-one
Throw the boys in the Whale, we’re gonna have some fun
It was a seventy-three Dart, with a one ninety-eight
When you stepped on the gas, it might accelerate
Headin’ west on fifty, then up the beltway
Put on your Vous shoes boys, it’s time to play
Steppin’ into the stink, steppin’ into the goo.
Beer, girls and tunes, it’s called the Rendezvous
Put on your Vous shoos - Headin’ out to Terp Town
Put on your Vous shoes - There’s a party goin’ down
Put on your Vous shoes - We’re gonna scream and yell
Put on your Vous shoes - We’re gonna raise some hell
Put on your Vous shoes - Come on boys
Put on your Vous shoes
Not a fancy place, but it’s not quite a shack
If your Mama walked in, she’d have a heart attack
There’s beer and sweat, plus a little spew
Wear your worst shoes, you gotta walk in the goo
It’s a crowded little pub called the Rendezvous
There’ll be some frat boys there, thinkin’ they’re real cool
Some Greek girls too, but ‘tween you and me
None of these folks will be a Ph.D
Put on your Vous shoos - Headin’ out to Terp Town
Put on your Vous shoes - There’s a party goin’ down
Put on your Vous shoes - We’re gonna scream and yell
Put on your Vous shoes - We’re gonna raise some hell
Put on your Vous shoes - Come on boys
Put on your Vous shoes
Watch out
He’s turnin’ green
He’s gonna blow
She’s gonna scream
She’s Linda Blair
On the movie screen
Don’t sit in your room, on a Saturday night,
Put on your Vous shoes, things’ll be alright
Don’t tell me you got something else to do
Hop in your car and head down to the Vous.
:band:
dutchfire Nov 19, 2006, 10:09 AM Dutchfire would like some nice food.
He has heared about Alohan snacks, so he asks Sir Bugsy if he can buy one.
Sir Bugsy doesn't have one yet, but together they decide to send out a messenger to Aloha to get them some OP's.
OOC (out of character) We could have some roleplay with the warrior we're sending to Aloha.
dutchfire Nov 19, 2006, 01:04 PM What do you guys think about sending a pm to some of our members that have left, like Black_Hole, CivGeneral, Bengeance, Veera, Swiss and Sigma? Getting them active would almost dubble the amount of active members in our team!
Theoden Nov 19, 2006, 01:45 PM Sure, go ahead. :)
BTW, how about starting a newspaper like Aloha did?
1889 Nov 19, 2006, 03:14 PM It would be great to have old members back. I'd also like to make a newspaper, but it must be different than Aloha's rag.
Sir Bugsy Nov 19, 2006, 04:24 PM Maybe we just invite them in for a pint, and then we can get them rehooked on the game.
1889 Nov 19, 2006, 05:28 PM Sigma, Swissempire, Bengeance, Veera Anlai, CivGeneral PM'ed
Haven't seen you around the Innovia or MTDG forums lately. We've grown to 4 cities since you left and expect to capture one from barbarians soon. Anyway lots of exciting stuff going on so please take a minute to at least stop by The Two-Headed Cow for a friendly drink and catch-up on old times.
DaveShack Nov 20, 2006, 02:52 AM Well done, someone get 1889 a drink!
dutchfire Nov 20, 2006, 05:29 AM I'd also like to make a newspaper, but it must be different than Aloha's rag.
In my opinion we should wait until we meet all teams before we start doing things like that. But some sort of media would be nice.
Sir Bugsy Nov 22, 2006, 12:18 AM We can put out a newspaper. Just be really careful not to put any intel in it. Some disinformation works really well also.
"As we founded our tenth city, we threw a party in the pub."
"As we began to study liberalism, we also celebrated the training of our first cavalry unit."
Here's a pint to 1889
Maybe I'll make some free beer coupons for those that haven't visited in a while.
1889 Nov 22, 2006, 01:23 AM Here's a pint to 1889
OK, rum and coke by the pint sounds kinda weird but thanks.
DaveShack Nov 22, 2006, 02:15 AM That's about the size of a double, if you double both the shot and the coke. ;)
I've heard in Texas the margaritas are served quart size, though it's doubtful that anyone who had more than one of those would be able to remember how big they were.
Theoden Nov 22, 2006, 05:02 PM Wasn't elections every 30 turns? Next turn is 90.
1889 Nov 22, 2006, 06:15 PM I don't see the point of elected offices for these games, especially in a team this size. We are all on the same page as far as strategy and the few disagreements that have occurred have been handled better than any appeal to authority could have.
Everybody's input is valuable but elected offices upset that equality and letting whoever gets the save first play it according to team consensus is much faster than designating any single one of us as turn player.
Sir Bugsy Nov 22, 2006, 10:12 PM We don't need no stinkin' elections. We're doing just fine.
dutchfire Nov 23, 2006, 03:21 AM Unless someone has got a problem with it, I don't think we'll need elections.
Theoden Nov 23, 2006, 09:53 AM Well, I'm not advocating elections, I was just mentioning it for the sake of fairness and democracy. ;)
I'm also fine with continuing our current organisation. :)
Mauer Nov 23, 2006, 10:00 AM Happy Thanksgiving Innovians!
Sir Bugsy Nov 23, 2006, 11:35 AM There used to be a turkey smilie. Looks like it went away.
Any way, Happy Thanksgiving everyone. I hope everyone has much to be thankful for. I know I do.
dutchfire Nov 25, 2006, 08:56 AM Have you already signed up for the new civIII MTDG?
If not, team SABER would like you to join.
Sir Bugsy Nov 25, 2006, 02:16 PM I'm in the GONG Show... err GONG Team.
dutchfire Nov 26, 2006, 06:29 AM [party]
:bday:
Sweet Sixteen!
I may now legally drink, but I doubt it will make the beer taste differently.
Mauer Nov 26, 2006, 08:47 AM Happy Birthday Dutch. Drinking at 16? Be careful.
1889 Nov 26, 2006, 08:52 AM I may now legally drink, but I doubt it will make the beer taste differently.
I believe that legal beer tastes slightly worse,
[buys drink] but happy birthday anyway! [/buys drink]
Sir Bugsy Nov 26, 2006, 03:53 PM Happy birthday Dutch! November babies are the best!
Theoden Nov 27, 2006, 08:25 AM Also a (belated) happy birthday to you, Bugsy. ;) :bday:
dutchfire Nov 27, 2006, 10:07 AM Thanks all,
By the way, should we make an announcement of our soon to be completed wonder? We could make a nice story featuring all of us, only question is who should be the great prophet :p.
DaveShack Nov 27, 2006, 03:30 PM What wonder are we about to complete?
Mauer Nov 27, 2006, 03:38 PM I was gonna ask, but didn't want to look stupid...er.. stupider.
1889 Nov 27, 2006, 04:47 PM I think its next turn that we build the Hindu Shrine. Quick test, without looking what is it called?
Mauer Nov 27, 2006, 04:50 PM I think it's the hoobida joobida
Theoden Nov 27, 2006, 09:50 PM Mahabodhi? Though I can't remember if that's the hindu or buddhist shrine... :hmm:
Sir Bugsy Nov 28, 2006, 12:28 AM Also a (belated) happy birthday to you, Bugsy. ;) :bday:
Thanks, but at my age I don't get too excited about birthdays. 47 orbits of the sun... I'm getting dizzy.
Sir Bugsy Nov 28, 2006, 12:29 AM I think its next turn that we build the Hindu Shrine. Quick test, without looking what is it called?
Hari krisna, hari, hari krisna. :D
Sir Bugsy Nov 28, 2006, 12:30 AM Edit - double post :p
dutchfire Nov 28, 2006, 11:21 AM Mahabodhi? Though I can't remember if that's the hindu or buddhist shrine... :hmm:
Kashi Vishwanath or something like that.
dutchfire Nov 28, 2006, 12:50 PM It was the end of november of the year that would be remembered as 625 before Christ. We actually don't know why we call it that way :crazyeye: 1889 and DaveShack were rolling a dice, while Sir Bugsy served the drinks. At the same moment Lord Parkin and Mauer were talking about the future plans for our civilization. A few moments later Dutchfire joined the conversation, and started talking about the new way of living some people in their city had adopted. It was called "Hinduism", or something like that, and it had been spreading for centuries. They were all thinking about how they could make this religion thing usefull.
Sir Bugsy: "Well, why don't you tax them, like you tax my bar?"
DaveShack: "That's actually quite a good idea!"
1889: "But we can't just start a tax for nothing, we're not dictators, we're a democratically elected government."
Mauer: "Well, we could do that, we haven't had elections in a few centuries anyway."
At that moment, Theoden came in, dragging along a knocked-out guy.
Theoden: "I found this weirdo lying on the town square."
Dutchfire: "Those clothes, they seem to be Hindu."
Strange guy: "I'm Mosos, servant of Brahman. I've come here to liberate the Innovian people of their ignorance of the One, True faith. I've set up the Kashi Vishwanath temple here."
Mauer: "Kisha Vashwat?"
Sir Bugsy: "Kasa Vishwinath?"
Moses: "Kashi Vishwanath, you fools! I've also made a bath there, and anyone enters it will feel truly liberated!"
DaveShack: "Wait a second, you can't just set up a bath here, that's against the laws." *winks to Theoden*
Theoden: "Correct, you will need to pay 1 gold to the local government for everyone that enters the bath."
Moses: "But I expect a lot of people to come here."
1889: "So we'll be making a lot of money, making that religion of yours finally usefull."
Moses: "But my temple will do a lot more for you, for example, I can provide training at the temple for three priests. And it will make your city more famous for it's beautifull culture around the globe. And it will attract more people to the Faith."
Dutchfire: "Good for you, and for us. But you will still have to pay."
And as the prophet left the bar, the officials felt good about themselves, and saw a shining future for the Innovian civilization.
How's that for an announcement?
Theoden Nov 28, 2006, 01:53 PM
That's excellent.
1889 Nov 28, 2006, 04:02 PM Yes, very nice. Also I just checked and our prophet's name was Moses.
dutchfire Nov 29, 2006, 01:43 AM Changed the name
dutchfire Dec 04, 2006, 12:50 PM I've just beaten Immortal and Deity today, it feels good!
I just started up a duel map, future age, monty, peter as opponent, made sure he didn't have oil, and killed him. You could try too, it really feels good :p.
1889 Dec 04, 2006, 12:56 PM My mother-in-law just arrived for a 4-6 week visit, my snow machine just busted a cylinder, the muffler is about to fall off the car, the house is sinking (but only a little bit) and the dog broke his leg.
A drink would be very useful, something strong like a Trans-galactic snorgel blaster. Better give the dog one too.
Sir Bugsy Dec 04, 2006, 08:18 PM One Trans-galactic snorgel blaster coming up. I got the recipe from some guy named Ford Prefect. :borg: Plus one for the pooch.
CivGeneral Dec 09, 2006, 04:51 AM Just noticed this place and compleately forgotten about this place.
I wonder if this place has any sake and green tea :D.
dutchfire Dec 09, 2006, 06:10 AM Welcome back CivGeneral!
Sir Bugsy Dec 09, 2006, 03:15 PM I wonder if this place has any sake and green tea :D.Of course we have sake and green tea. We have every known and unknown beverage in the universe.
For example, 1889 prefers Trans-galactic snorgel blasters :crazyeye: :D
Theoden Dec 09, 2006, 04:20 PM Welcome to the two headed cow
We have all that you may desire
If you are in need of a drink right now
Our willingness to help you will never expire
For those who have found their way here
Are surely brothers of ours
With them we will share our beer
And drink into the wee hours
:D
Sir Bugsy Dec 10, 2006, 03:55 PM Well done!! We have a song for advertising on radio and t.v. :D
Lord Parkin Dec 11, 2006, 01:41 AM Unless someone has got a problem with it, I don't think we'll need elections.I have a problem! In fact, I have a lot of problems! :D
(Actually, I don't care either.)
[party]
:bday:
Sweet Sixteen!
I may now legally drink, but I doubt it will make the beer taste differently.Legally drink at 16? Which country are you in? (It's 18 here in NZ.) :)
Happy Birthday Dutch. Drinking at 16? Be careful. Many people drink a lot younger than that. ;)
dutchfire Dec 11, 2006, 10:08 AM Legally drink at 16? Which country are you in? (It's 18 here in NZ.) :)
The Netherlands. Drink at 16, but drive at 18. In some countries you can drive at 16, but drink at 18. Maybe lawmakers think that <18 shouldn't drink and drive at the same time? :p
Lord Parkin Dec 11, 2006, 11:20 PM The Netherlands. Drink at 16, but drive at 18. In some countries you can drive at 16, but drink at 18. Maybe lawmakers think that <18 shouldn't drink and drive at the same time? :p
Actually, here in New Zealand you can legally drive at 15. The youngest age in the world, apparently. :) Drink and smoke at 18 though...
CivGeneral Dec 15, 2006, 04:11 AM Since I am lurking, I'll have some sake and green tea.
Sir Bugsy Dec 15, 2006, 08:47 PM Aye aye General - Green tea and sake.
Sir Bugsy Dec 24, 2006, 06:55 PM :) :xtree: :xmascheers: :santa2: :snowcool:
Merry Christmas to all my teammates!
:xmastree: :xmastree: :xmastree:
1889 Dec 24, 2006, 08:35 PM Happy holidays to all my fellow co-conspirators.
:Buys round of egg-nog and...Lets see, what goes good with egg-nog...oh, rum. Yes, egg-nog and rum all around:
Also let’s keep the holidays safe, please don't drink and post.
Sir Bugsy Dec 24, 2006, 08:48 PM Guido is checking everyone at the door before they leave. So far no one has left. :)
dutchfire Dec 25, 2006, 05:39 AM Shall we send a christmas greeting to the other teams?
"Team Innovia wishes you all a merry christmas and a happy newyear!"
Theoden Dec 25, 2006, 03:58 PM Yay, Merry Christmas everyone. :D :xmassign:
I'd like a christmas beer for this occasion. :)
Also, let's take a look at our wishes:
Great Library
Civil Service
Tech trade with Aloha
Contact with Epsilon and Piffle
Seems like we've been moderately nice this year. ;)
dutchfire Dec 26, 2006, 05:01 AM *nukes* :p
Theoden Dec 26, 2006, 03:21 PM Ahh, yes, I knew I forgot something. ;) Maybe if we all wish very hard, Santa might give us a nuke. :D
CivGeneral Dec 27, 2006, 04:05 AM What's a nuke? We are still in the ancient area :crazyeye:.
dutchfire Dec 31, 2006, 12:10 PM Hey guys, I'm back from Austria. I've had a great time there, anything happened here?
And a drink to everyone, as I've had enough there too :p.
1889 Dec 31, 2006, 01:19 PM Same old same old, a slow steady march to victory.
dutchfire Jan 12, 2007, 02:26 AM My internet has been out since monday.
I don't know when it'll be back up.
Lord Parkin Jan 12, 2007, 07:03 PM My internet has been out since monday.
I don't know when it'll be back up.How are you posting then? Isn't that a paradox? :)
1889 Jan 12, 2007, 08:02 PM How are you posting then? Isn't that a paradox? :)
It is bound to be one of the great mysteries of our time.

*Rod Sterling voice over*
Dutchfire. A man without contact with the outside world. No phone, no lights, no motorcar, no internet, not a single luxury. Completely cut off.
and yet...
he communicates with his team.
how is it done? Through an alternate universe? Through telepathy? Through supernatural powers?
Find out as we take stroll through The Innovia Zone.
dutchfire Jan 13, 2007, 04:07 AM how is it done? Through an alternate universe? Through telepathy? Through supernatural powers?
Well, actually it was just a computer at my school. I'll try telepathy next time.
dutchfire Jan 23, 2007, 01:14 PM Welcome TBoy!
1889 Jan 23, 2007, 04:17 PM To help TBoy feel welcome I propose we start a tradition that all new members buy a round of drinks.
Theoden Jan 23, 2007, 05:14 PM I completely agree with you on that one, 1889. ;) It should be our initiation rite. :D
dutchfire Jan 24, 2007, 08:59 AM We should start recruiting a bit more then :p
Theoden Jan 24, 2007, 09:47 AM We should start recruiting a bit more then :p
Exactly. No one expects the Innovian inquisition. :mischief:
dutchfire Jan 24, 2007, 11:06 AM Talking about recruiting, I pmed Chamnix some time ago. He seemed interested, but he said he was too busy at the moment, we might have good luck later though :D
1889 Jan 25, 2007, 06:25 PM By the way, we're having a bit of a blizzard here. I've been busy digging out furnace exhausts, doorways and the vehicles but am loosing the battle. Our cable will probably get knocked out too so I may be away for a few days.
Sir Bugsy Jan 25, 2007, 08:20 PM As soon as T Boy walks in the door, we'll hand him his bill for a round. These virtual tabs can get expensive. :mischief:
Lord Parkin Jan 25, 2007, 11:42 PM By the way, we're having a bit of a blizzard here. I've been busy digging out furnace exhausts, doorways and the vehicles but am loosing the battle. Our cable will probably get knocked out too so I may be away for a few days.I only just noticed that you live in Alaska. You're the first person on these forums that I've ever known to live there. Is that a permanent or temporary residence? :)
1889 Jan 26, 2007, 10:16 AM Is 14 years permanent enough for you? I love it, grew up in Southern California, hated that.
Theoden Jan 26, 2007, 10:35 AM But isn't it really cold, snowy and windy? Here in Denmark it's only about -5 degrees and I still feel it's too cold and wouldn't consider moving up norther. :)
1889 Jan 26, 2007, 11:16 AM I've mostly lived in Anchorage (about the same latitude as Oslo) which is right near the water (so typical winter temperature is -10 C, which is honestly quite comfortable) and shielded by mountains to keep the wind down. Snow fall is quite significant though, 8+ feet!
I loved Anchorage, but my wife got a way better job in Bethel (most maps don't bother to show it, 400 miles west of Anchorage on the Kuskokwim River.) I think this is the biggest river delta in the world, so it’s flat and since all the water here freezes its windy as hell and bitter cold, wind chill often as much as -40.
dutchfire Jan 26, 2007, 11:21 AM According to 2005 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the city was 6,262.
That's quite small isn't it?
1889 Jan 26, 2007, 11:30 AM Big enough though and growing pretty quick.
dutchfire Jan 26, 2007, 11:35 AM Well, the town I live in has approximately 18000 citizens, and that's hardly enough to get things like a cinema or things like that.
1889 Jan 26, 2007, 11:37 AM Get married and 20 years older and you wont even miss 'em. :)
Theoden Jan 26, 2007, 03:06 PM True, but at dutchfire's age the amount of pubs and entertainment facilities indicate a city's size. ;)
My city has around 1400000 citizens. :p
Lord Parkin Jan 26, 2007, 03:06 PM The town I live in only has about 20000 people, and that's quite comfortable for me.
Big enough though and growing pretty quick.Uh... clearly it's the place to be, a town on a frozen river??
dutchfire Jan 27, 2007, 08:19 AM True, but at dutchfire's age the amount of pubs and entertainment facilities indicate a city's size. ;)
Inside the mind of a 16-year old:
  :band: [party] > :snowcool:
1889 Jan 27, 2007, 09:59 AM Uh... clearly it's the place to be, a town on a frozen river??
I guess I didn't describe it that well, there is a frozen lake also.
dutchfire Mar 04, 2007, 10:18 AM Should we make a fancy newspaper/television show too?
1889 Mar 04, 2007, 11:25 AM Hell ya! The big events can about all our great people or we can wait until the war starts and talk about our victorious armies. I can't make a video but some ideas could be interviews with some of our most famous citizens or recruitment commercial.
dutchfire Mar 30, 2007, 02:56 PM Should we make a april first announcement?
For example saying that our team will retire next turn or something like that?
Theoden Mar 30, 2007, 03:56 PM Yes, that's a very good idea. If no one else wants I can try to write our "retirement".
1889 Mar 30, 2007, 08:16 PM Yes cool. What will be our reason? We can claim lack of interest or that the game is just too far gone and Epsilon's lead is unasailable.
Sir Bugsy Mar 31, 2007, 12:21 AM An April Fool's Day announcement would be choice.
let's say we're going to leave our cities undefended. First come first served.
dutchfire Mar 31, 2007, 11:45 AM I'm very sad to announce that Team Innovia will retire as of tomorrow. A combination of a general lack of interest and severe internal struggles have led us to believe that it is best to stop playing this game. Next turn all our troops will be disbanded and our cities will be for the first to get there. The admins will handle the rest that needs to be done. I don't want to go into the exact reasons why our team has been disbanded, but you'll be able to see it in our teams private forum after this game has closed.
The few remaining members of our team might sign up for other teams in the future, but that's up to the admins. They shouldn't be put together though, seeing the results we had now.
1889 Mar 31, 2007, 11:49 AM The few remaining members of our team might sign up for other teams in the future, but that's up to the admins. They shouldn't be put together though, seeing the results we had now.
That's awsome.
dutchfire Mar 31, 2007, 11:50 AM I'll wait to see what Theoden thinks and then I'll post it, okay?
Theoden Mar 31, 2007, 12:00 PM Hilarious. Go ahead and post it once it turns the 1st. It's better than what I had in mind.
dutchfire Mar 31, 2007, 12:04 PM Isn't it the 1st in Australia already?
edit: Posted it
1889 Apr 13, 2007, 07:19 PM I'm really looking forward to the expansion, but I find its very hard to start a new game once I learn that something newer is about to be released. That's why I spend so much time here.
(sigh)
Maybe I should find a book to read.
Sir Bugsy Apr 13, 2007, 11:26 PM Since I am obviously in the dark - What expansion?
1889 Apr 14, 2007, 01:50 AM New Civ expansion "Beyond the Sword" in July. Lots of info in the news forum.
Lord Parkin Apr 14, 2007, 02:13 AM Do you have Warlords yet, by chance?
1889 Apr 14, 2007, 07:21 AM Do you have Warlords yet, by chance?
Are you kidding me? I pre-order this stuff and then stay up all night tracking the shipping. It’s unnatural, but I'm crazy for civ. Also this is a really small town, not much in the way of recreation.
Anyway, ya I got it; I think it's great. I bought it mostly for the epic game content but thought two of the scenarios were really cool also. I tried to get some PBEMs going but they didn't work out and now I hardly play it.
dutchfire Apr 14, 2007, 07:26 AM Also this is a really small town, not much in the way of recreation.
Told you so :D (See post 138 and onwards.)
Anyone know if BtS will come together with Warlords?
I still only have vanilla, but as BtS will include the Dutch, I'm tempted to buy it :p
Theoden Apr 14, 2007, 09:14 AM I tried to get some PBEMs going but they didn't work out and now I hardly play it.
A pity that the chinese unification PBEM stopped at around turn 10 or so...
I'll probably get BtS as soon as it's out, even though I probably won't have much time to play it just as with Warlords and Vanilla civ4. :(
Lord Parkin Apr 14, 2007, 07:56 PM Are you kidding me? I pre-order this stuff and then stay up all night tracking the shipping. It’s unnatural, but I'm crazy for civ. Also this is a really small town, not much in the way of recreation.

I tried to get some PBEMs going but they didn't work out and now I hardly play it.Just out of curiousity, have you ever tried Direct IP? It's quite a nice (and reasonably quick) way of playing, I find. I'd be willing to challenge you to a game at some stage, if you want. (Or anyone else who's up for it.) :)
Told you so :D (See post 138 and onwards.)
Anyone know if BtS will come together with Warlords?
I still only have vanilla, but as BtS will include the Dutch, I'm tempted to buy it :pI'm almost certain that the content from Warlords will have to be included with Beyond the Sword. After all, they were talking about having "new unique buildings" for the new civs in BTS (amongst many other things), which pretty much implies that Warlords has to be included in BTS. (Or, at least, the epic game content... perhaps the Warlords scenarios will be left out.) ;)
1889 Apr 14, 2007, 09:58 PM I'd be willing to challenge you to a game at some stage, if you want. (Or anyone else who's up for it.) :)
...I'm almost certain that the content from Warlords will have to be included with Beyond the Sword.
Thanks for the invite, but I've already tried it and really really didn't like it. I like to micromanage, investigate everything to death and make elaborate plans; time limits mess that up even worse than human opponents.
I concur that BtS owners will be gifted the Warlords’ content. That is how the Civ III expansions worked also.
Lord Parkin Apr 15, 2007, 01:50 AM Thanks for the invite, but I've already tried it and really really didn't like it. I like to micromanage, investigate everything to death and make elaborate plans; time limits mess that up even worse than human opponents. :lol:No, I think you misunderstand. :) I also vehemently dislike time limits, and for that reason don't like to play games with them. But over Direct IP is different - you can set it so there is no turn timer, so both players can still micromanage nicely, and each turn ends once both of them have pressed enter. It's really quite enjoyable, from my experience. ;)
Theoden Apr 15, 2007, 05:44 AM Just out of curiousity, have you ever tried Direct IP? It's quite a nice (and reasonably quick) way of playing, I find. I'd be willing to challenge you to a game at some stage, if you want. (Or anyone else who's up for it.) ;)
I'd love to, but the time zone difference of 9 hours or something makes it sort of difficult...
IP is definately a fun way of playing though, as long as the time limit is turned off, as I like to micromanage as well. :)
Lord Parkin Apr 15, 2007, 04:44 PM The time zone difference doesn't necessarily mean a lot. It depends what time during the day you usually play. I usually play in the evening here, although I can sometimes play during the morning and afternoon too.
Theoden Apr 15, 2007, 04:59 PM During weekdays I rarely play much, but if I do it's of course in the evening. In the weekend, it can be any time of the day, or if I'm lucky, the whole day. ;)
1889 Apr 15, 2007, 06:41 PM Scheduling time is really hard for me with two young kids running around but I can give it a shot. Also with an expansion due in just a few weeks (10 +) there is no guarantee that such a game would ever finish.
Lord Parkin Apr 15, 2007, 07:36 PM Well, let me know whenever either of you are around. Do you have Gmail, by any chance? :)
And it's actually quite possible to finish a game before BTS comes out, you can even finish a game in one sitting if you have the time. But even if it doesn't end up getting finished, it doesn't matter too much - the fun for me is in the playing, not in the final victory or loss. :)
1889 Apr 20, 2007, 02:44 AM Happy 1 Year Anniversary to Theoden, DaveShack and Dutchfire who have been with Innovia since the beginning. Unfortunately the one year anniversary is the paper anniversary. Obviously we can't get you any of that here so hopefully Sir Bugsy will open a bottle of the best champagne that comes in a magnum.
dutchfire Apr 20, 2007, 02:53 AM Happy 1 Year Anniversary to Theoden, DaveShack and Dutchfire who have been with Innovia since the beginning. Unfortunately the one year anniversary is the paper anniversary. Obviously we can't get you any of that here so hopefully Sir Bugsy will open a bottle of the best champagne that comes in a magnum.
I'm not here since the beginning, but I wouldn't say no to a bottle of champagne :)
Lord Parkin Apr 20, 2007, 04:21 AM If it's free, why not. (Spot the university student.) ;)
Theoden May 03, 2007, 04:08 PM Aargh! My life at the moment:
I have to practice the bass part of a song for wednesday and a piano solo, which is seemingly at the edge of my skills, for thursday. Meanwhile the duties of a student keeps me active with assignments/papers (dunno what the english equivalent of it is) for monday, tuesday and thursday as well as a big project and exams coming soon. Meanwhile there's a dozen things to be done like upgrading my computer with various music software. And then I try to keep up with CFC, and all this is while trying to maintain a minimum of a social life... :crazyeye:
Conclusion: I need a WheelVille Special Whisky right now!
1889 May 03, 2007, 05:20 PM How about some of the goldschlager we pillaged from B and O?
Theoden May 03, 2007, 05:37 PM The stuff that managed to kill a wild boar last week? That's exactly what I need, so I'll have two pints. :)
1889 May 12, 2007, 02:12 AM The expansion sounds so cool! I'll absolutely be pre-ordering. How 'bout the rest of you?
Lord Parkin May 12, 2007, 02:57 AM I'll certainly be getting it at the earliest possible opportunity, although I'm not sure when that will be, being way out here in New Zealand...
Theoden May 12, 2007, 05:41 AM I'll probably get it as soon as it comes out (they said end of July for the rest of the world), so I know what I'm going to do the last two weeks of my holiday. :)
dutchfire May 12, 2007, 10:01 AM I'm going to Rome with school soon, and I've preordered the new Harry Potter book. If I've got some cash left, I might buy either Warlords or BtS. I'd wait for the patch to come out for BtS though.
1889 May 12, 2007, 11:48 AM I don't think I'd buy Warlords now. All that stuff hase to be in BtS.
Sir Bugsy May 12, 2007, 03:04 PM I need to look into this expansion. I haven't heard about it.
Theoden May 12, 2007, 04:13 PM Don't you ever the read the main page? :p
Anyway, all we know about it thus far is listed here.
Lord Parkin May 12, 2007, 07:35 PM I'm going to Rome with school soon, and I've preordered the new Harry Potter book. If I've got some cash left, I might buy either Warlords or BtS. I'd wait for the patch to come out for BtS though.
Ah yes, I'm looking forward to that last Harry Potter book. ;)
I don't think I'd buy Warlords now. All that stuff hase to be in BtS.
You're probably right. :)
1889 May 12, 2007, 08:07 PM ...last Harry Potter book.
Ya right.
Lord Parkin May 12, 2007, 11:06 PM Well, she did say she wasn't writing any more. But who knows. If he dies though, then that'll kind of put a stopper on being able to write any more books. ;)
Sir Bugsy May 13, 2007, 10:46 AM Since they are supposed to be children's books, I'm thinking good triumphs over evil. I'm wondering if Harry does something that costs him his life in exchange for Voldimort's.
Over the past years, there have been many comparisons to Harry as a Christ-like figure. I'm thinking he may end up the same way - giving his life so others may live.
dutchfire May 13, 2007, 10:51 AM I'm pretty sure this will be the last Harry Potter book (excluding spin-offs), I think that has been clear for years. 7 years in Hogwarts, 7 books.
1889 May 13, 2007, 11:39 AM Still ample material for prequels: young-er Harry, Harry's mom and dad, younger Voldimort...
Heck, how about young Hogwarts for that matter and even if Harry dies J. K. Rawlings could always think up some magic that resurrects Harry and her bank account.
Sir Bugsy May 15, 2007, 10:50 PM The Mom and Dad stuff might be interesting. Right now I'm just waiting for July. What I find amazing is the number of adults that read this series. If you are on a plane the weekend after it comes out, count how many Harry Potter books you see.
Sir Bugsy May 18, 2007, 12:13 PM Is it just me, or did this game suddenly screech to a halt?
1889 May 18, 2007, 12:25 PM It's been our turn for about 22 hours. I was trying to install at the inlaws and it asked for disc 2. Oops, looks like I wont be able to play the saves. I'll post that we may need an extension this turn.
Lord Parkin May 18, 2007, 06:32 PM I'll give dutchfire a chance to play while I'm busy (he's still around until the 20th, right?). If no-one's played the save by this evening then I'll try to make time to do so myself. Any specific instructions?
dutchfire Jun 28, 2007, 01:06 PM As you all know, a war has been fought between the glorious peoples of Innovia and Locopotamia. In the year 1010 Innovian troops landed on Locopotamian shores, and 10 years later, they conquered and razed the city of B&O. The A-Team had fought there, and was partly responsible for the destruction of the Pyramids, perhaps the most beautiful building ever. The A-Team felt obliged to do something good to compensate for this tragic loss. So they went around to look for advice.
They visited the Kashi Vishwanath, and other important temples around the world. They met with priests, scientists and other lunatics (note that most lunatics were found in Alohan lands). They even tried to visit the Oracle, but that site was closed for public that day as the famous producer Gene R. Alw was making another blockbuster. They did have time to sell the rights to make a television series about their lives to him for a few bucks. Come on, it's not like anyone is going to watch a show called the A-team.
In the end, they had a pretty good idea what they were going to do. They would start building a new trophy of architecture. They contacted the government, and met Theoden and Provolution, two representatives of the government of Innovia. They suggested building a Mausoleum for a guy called Mausollos, as they had some experience with that. But the A-team knew how succesful that Mausoleum had been, so they decided to do something else. They did like the idea of building a mausoleum though.
In 1250 they revealed their creation to the public, (while Hannibal was murmering "I love it when a plan comes together"):
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/4a/Taj1.jpg
With this job done, and with their bad acts redeemed, they were now free to go. They travelled across the country to help people. This way, the life of many Innovians was improved. Their output could now improve as they didn't need to worry about injustice and violence. It was truly a golden age for Innovia.
"If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire... The A-Team."
1889 Jun 28, 2007, 01:16 PM Actually they went off in search of Iron. Armor plating is standard procedure for any A-team project.
Theoden Jun 28, 2007, 03:12 PM Great story, dutchfire.
1889 Jul 14, 2007, 02:16 PM My wife just got back from Anchorage and we are now restocked for booze. all I need from the Two-Headed Cow today is a cold galss. ;)
1889 Jul 24, 2007, 06:41 PM ETA for my BtS is Aug 4th.
dutchfire Jul 25, 2007, 01:55 AM Don't they have it like everywhere except Alaska already? I guess living in the middle of nowhere has disadvantages :p
1889 Jul 25, 2007, 02:40 AM Being cheep has disadvantages. Amazon ships through UPS so even the middle of nowhere is only about 48 hours away. But something in me refuses to pay more for shipping than the thing being shipped. So they can take their time getting it to me at the speed of "super saver shipping" but I think my strong stand on this issue will earn me their respect. :smug:
P.S. If you have it start the SG already!
dutchfire Jul 25, 2007, 02:43 AM I don't have it yet, I'm still busy setting up my dual-install. I might get it later today, or else in the weekend.
dutchfire Aug 03, 2007, 12:52 PM I have it now (since monday), but it won't install  I'll try to figure it out though.
By the way, Theoden, I like your avatar, it's an Escher, isn't it?
Theoden Aug 03, 2007, 04:08 PM Yep, it's Escher's "Waterfall". A fantastic piece of art and one of his best, IMHO. :)
I already have BtS (had it since the 26th) and it's working fine.
1889 Aug 03, 2007, 04:44 PM I have mine also. Instalation was not easy, it crashed my computer twice. It seems to work now though, and its really awsome too, but I can't get it to patch yet. So we should probably delay an SG until we have something a little more stable.
