AlanH Nov 13, 2006, 03:06 PM SGOTM 03 - Russian Diplomats and Cosmonauts
Welcome to the third Civ4 SGOTM. As Peter The Great, Leader of All the Russias, you are charged with achieving a Diplomatic or Space Victory.
The Game
This Monarch difficulty game is on a Standard size, Gyathaar-special, crowded map, at Epic speed, against 17 rivals. All victory conditions are enabled, but the laurels for this contest will be awarded to the teams who achieve the fastest Diplomatic or Space victory.
Versions
Each team will have a choice of playing this map in Civilization IV version 1.61 or in Warlords version 2.08. The maps and civs/leaders will be the same in each version, but the games will play differently. Gyathaar has compiled some guidance on the differences in the next post in this thread. The civs and leaders will have the traits, UUs etc that are assigned out of the box in each of the two versions.
HoF Mod
The teams will play using variants of the HoF Mod (http://hof.civfanatics.net/civ4/mod.php) to allow you to take advantage of the additional logging, event monitoring and advisor options it provides. The mods will be mandatory, as the start files will be locked to those assets.
The Warlords teams will use the standard HoF Mod for Windows version 2.08. This is currently HOF_Mod-2.08.001 (http://hof.civfanatics.net/civ4/mods/HOF-2.08.001.exe), but we shall use the latest version of the mod as at the start date for the game.
The Vanilla teams will use the standard HoF Mod for Windows version 1.16. This is currently HOF_Mod-1.16.008 (http://hof.civfanatics.net/civ4/mods/HOF-1.16.008.exe), but we shall use the latest version of the mod as at the start date for the game.
There will now be no mod option to accommodate Mac players.
The game will start on December 1st.
Please post in this thread if you wish to join a team and take part in the competition. The information required to place you in a suitable team is as follows:-
Which version(s) of the map can you play (1.61/Vanilla or 2.08/Warlords), and do you have any preference?
Which level (noble, monarch, etc.) are you comfortable playing in a solo game?
Have you played any Civ4 GOTM games before?
Have you played any succession games or SGOTM before?
Do you have a group of players you want to play with?

Notes
Please visit the Civ4 SGOTM reference thread (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=168439) to check out the rules and procedures to ensure that you are adequately prepared for this game.
BOTH Civilization IV v1.61 and Warlords v.2.08 are supported for this SGOTM. No other versions can be used, and you will have to stick with the same version throughout the game. We reserve the option to eliminate one of these versions if we judge that there are too few teams willing to play that version.
Teams will compete for up to four awards for each version of the game - the Gold, Silver and Bronze Laurels for the fastest finishes, and the Wooden Spoons for the lowest scoring finisher. The number of awards in each game will depend on the number of teams.
All teams must play the sponsored variant - awards will be given to teams who achieve Diplomatic or Space victories in the least turns.
All saved game files uploaded to the server are parsed through software that extracts and archives data about your save, including reload count for each turn set.
Spoiler information will absolutely NOT be tolerated in this thread.
Please sign up for this game to learn new skills in a friendly team competition.
Update 1: clarified that civs are the same in both versions, and the HoF Mod is mandatory.
Update 2: added links to HoF Mod page and HOF Mod downloads.
Update 3: updated HoF Mod details and removed the Mac player option.

Hello. I wish to join a team. I want to play 2.08 warlords. I have played 1 or 2 civ4 gotm before dont remember if i reported the second one :) And I have never played a succession game before or SGOTM. I dont have a group of players but would like to join someone. Im pretty much comfortable with any difficoulty level. Just give me a pm and I will look into it.
EDIT: Ive gotten a request and confirmed that I want to join The Trash team. (ofcourse the only thing to be trashed is the AI opponents!)
Woobi Nov 13, 2006, 06:53 PM 1. I can play both, prefer Warlords
2. I can win Monarch consistantly, Emporer about 3/10

1. Either, no preference (Whatever Team Smurkz chooses).
2. Prince/Monarch (I haven't played a solo game in a while).
3. Yes
4. Yes, both.
5. Team Smurkz (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=182143)
Note: The link is to our team history thread, so no cause to worry about spoilers.
@SGOTM Staff: Can our graph line be the Smurkz green color? Just a minor request. :D
ShannonCT Nov 13, 2006, 07:25 PM 1. Can play either. No preference.
2. Emperor
3. Yes
4. Yes
5. Memphis Blues
sanabas Nov 13, 2006, 07:33 PM 1. Can play either, prefer warlords
2. No idea. I am currently halfway through my first ever civ4 game, so I'm a long way from being comfortable on any level.
3. nope
4. yes, but all on civ3
5. I'd prefer at least one or two players I've played with before, as I'm more likely to trust their advice. So if anyone knows me and is happy to invite me to their team, please say so. Other than that, no preference.
AlanH Nov 13, 2006, 07:46 PM @SGOTM Staff: Can our graph line be the Smurkz green color? Just a minor request. :D
Graph colors are assigned from a fixed palette in alphabetical order. I *could* reorder the palette to put green at the right point in the list for one game, but it wouldn't necessarily be correct for the next game or the previous ones, depending on the team names. And it would change all the colour assignments for prior games, confusing the teams in the current game in the process.
Alternatively, I could change the software so that team colors are specified separately for each game, but that's not a trivial change, and you did say it was a 'minor' request .....
Another option would be for you to bribe the other teams to change their team names to put yours in the right position to pick up green. :mischief: Note that the Smurkz bright green is the fourth color in the list, so getting 'Smurkz' that high up alphabetically, using bribary, could be expensive :p
Merum Nov 13, 2006, 07:50 PM Hell yeah! I'm in!
I'd prefer to play warlords, but I'll play whatever Fifth Element has.

Kodii Nov 13, 2006, 08:07 PM I haven't decided whether to signup or not, but I have a question. Will the HoF mod be mandatory for participation?
AlanH Nov 13, 2006, 08:12 PM Yes. The saves will have locked assets.
AlanH Nov 13, 2006, 08:25 PM To clarify: The maps for Civ4 and Warlords will be the same. The eighteen civs and leaders will also be the same for both games, but they will have the traits, UUs etc. that are assigned to them out of the box in the two versions.
I've updated the first post to reflect these last two posts
BCLG100 Nov 13, 2006, 08:36 PM I'll sign up but i'll have to check whether CDZ is playing again first before going for a team :)

Started some but never finished.

Niklas Nov 14, 2006, 01:49 AM Vanilla only, though I might consider getting Warlords if the rest of the team so wishes.

BLubmuz Nov 14, 2006, 02:43 AM A question:

4.yes
5. Team CDZ if there is one
Ambiorix Nov 14, 2006, 02:51 AM Warlords only please.
Except for the WOTMs (which I consistenly lose...) I've been playing on Noble mostly.
Played some succession games way back in Civ3 but none since.
I'm signing up mostly because I want to improve my game, and I see SGOTM as more efficient to that than WOTM. So I'd prefer a team with some clever guys to learn from, and keep the focus on fun rather than first place.
Edit :
now hooked up with the Trash Team - just sounded like the place to be. :p
pigswill Nov 14, 2006, 03:04 AM Version: Either
Level: Prince/Monarch
GOTM: yes
SGOTM:yes
Team : Trash Team (in the process of forming (hopefully))
AlanH Nov 14, 2006, 03:35 AM A question:
is it possible to play both, of course with different teams?
No! The two games would diverge in time and/or map disclosure. A player involved in two teams would have the combined information from both games, and so have an unfair advantage over other players.
MoMo19947 Nov 14, 2006, 03:40 AM I'm new so can u tell me if this is a multiplayer game like on the internet?

AlanH Nov 14, 2006, 03:44 AM I'm new so can u tell me if this is a multiplayer game like on the internet?
Hello, welcome :wavey:
It's a Succession Game, a Single player game where team members play maybe ten turns each and pass the game on to the next player in turn.
Please read the SGOTM Reference thread that's linked in the first post. That should answer most of yoiur questions.
AlanH Nov 14, 2006, 03:47 AM I've only got 500Mb or RAM will 17 rivals mean the game will chug later on?
Probably. But RAM is the cheapest upgrade you can buy for your PC. Get it some more for Christmas :)

Niklas Nov 14, 2006, 12:53 PM Any chance you could let us know what kind of archipelago map this is? And how it wraps.Umm, it's all in the first post. :p
remconius Nov 14, 2006, 12:56 PM Umm, it's all in the first post. :p
That's what I thought....
Until I tried to set it up and I could choose type of archipelago (snaky, etc..) and world wrap (flat, etc) and resources. No biggy, but it would make the test closer to the truth.

DynamicSpirit Nov 15, 2006, 03:24 AM All teams must play the sponsored variant - awards will be given to teams who achieve Diplomatic or Space victories in the least turns.
Just to clarify: Are there separate awards for fastest diplomatic and fastest spacerace? (Otherwise everyone will presumably go diplomatic since it's possible to get a diplomatic win a lot faster than a spacerace win)
And are there separate awards for vanilla and warlords (otherwise there's a strong incentive for everyone to go vanilla due to the consensus that warlords with the 2.08 patch is harder)

AlanH Nov 15, 2006, 03:46 AM The first post tries to make it clear that there are separate awards for Warlords and vanilla. There are not separate awards for space and diplo.

AlanH Nov 16, 2006, 09:01 PM I have now added a listing in the third post in this thread that shows the player database for this game. This is the same database that drives the submissions, progress and results systems, so I need to get it right.
At this stage I need you all to check that I have included you, and that your preferences for team and game version are correct in the database. The teams are in no way finalised, and unassigned players are simply listed, but not yet assigned to any team.
Please let me know here or in a PM if there are any errors or omissions.
da_Vinci Nov 16, 2006, 09:09 PM There's no way this game will be finished in three weeks. Three months is typical for a SGOTM.
Three months ... is that just a function of the time it takes to cycle the game among team members, or something else about the game (like the 17 adversaries)?

da_Vinci Nov 16, 2006, 09:19 PM This sounds interesting ... sign me up.
1. Version: 1.61 only (let me master this one first ...)
2. Level? You mean what I can win at? Noble always, prince most of the time. Monarch would be iffy.
3. Played GOTM 10 (got killed), 11 (won on adventurer) 12 (won on contender)
4. No prior succession games
5. No special group. What did Groucho say ... "I wouldn't join a club that would stoop to having me as a member"
Would not want to be the one mediocre player on a good team that holds them back. So I would be happy to be on a team of prince and below players who are otherwise unaligned.
That being said, if a team of good players wants an apprentice, I'd be happy to do that too. You can see what you are in for as I have posted in the GOTM 10 - 12 spoilers.

Thrallia Nov 16, 2006, 09:47 PM Three months ... is that just a function of the time it takes to cycle the game among team members, or something else about the game (like the 17 adversaries)?
dV
Three months is how long it appears a game can last before the remaining teams that haven't finished the game yet tend to lose interest in the game.
SGOTM1 I believe lasted about 3 months from start to when awards were given and SGOTM2 was started. A couple teams didnt' finish in time, but went ahead and finished.
Basically, it is because a player is given a standard of 24 hours to pick up the save and 48 hours to play it and post the new save. This leads to an expected average time per turnset(turns a player plays until he uploads the new save) of about 3 days. Since most turnsets are 10 turns and an average Civ4 game is 300+ turns, that's 90 days right there. The length of a turnset is up to the team you end up on though, in the early game, turnsets are often 15-30 turns, and some teams do 15 turns throughout the game.

Thanks.
da_Vinci Nov 17, 2006, 08:17 AM Moved from the Reference Thread
I have one unanswered question after reading the above ...
Does the team member playing the turnset play the turns in isolation from active discussion with the team, or is team consultation during the gameplay allowed?
The former would seem to make more sense. Each general knows the grand strategy, and even the key objectives, but is on their own in dealing with minute to minute tactical decisions.
If the latter is permitted, then in theory the game could end up being the play of one player, just executed on five or so machines.
(Apologies if this is the wrong place to ask)

Dagnabit Nov 17, 2006, 09:01 AM With trepidation, I would like to sign up for SGOTM3.
1. Currently playing only 1.61 Vanilla
2. Getting comfortable at Prince and slowly getting better at Monarch
3. Haven't played them well but played the last 3 or so GOTMs. Am just starting GOTM12.
4. No Succession games but daily followed all the team treads for SGOTM1 and SGOTM2.
5. No team preferences. Most all I have followed have super players and I can learn from all. I am an old guy so laughed when the geezers formed. I wouldn't mind being on an experienced team but also it might be fun and challenging to play and learn with some noobs like myself. I am playing to quote Alan: " to learn new skills in a friendly team competion." At my age I can't take myself too serious.
Dagnabit!
AlanH Nov 17, 2006, 09:05 AM Does the team member playing the turnset play the turns in isolation from active discussion with the team, or is team consultation during the gameplay allowed?
This is up to the teams. A relatively inexperienced player may want more guidance than another, and one person's simple tactical decision is another's life or death struggle to avoid making a hash of the whole team's game.
Since this is, first and foremost, an attempt to provide a friendly competition where players can learn from each other, both within their teams and across the competition, I see no reason to restrict the way teams and individuals choose to operate. Team leaders *should* however, ensure that all members are aware of the ground rules in their teams.
(Apologies if this is the wrong place to ask)
I'll lock the Reference thread down. I don't want it to turn into a discussion thread. Otherwise it will become difficult for new players to assimilate everything in that thread. If any clarifications are needed as a result of discussions like this then they can be incorporated into the existing posts.
AlanH Nov 17, 2006, 10:18 AM Please rename of CFR teams before opening team threads: CFR_ + color of the line on SGOTM Progress page!
What names would you suggest I should call some of those colors? "CFR_Sort-of-muddy-yellow" ... "CFR_Slightly-green-shade-of-gray"? :p
Seriously ...
There's a pretty little key to the right of the graph, and it seems to me that should be enough. I don't want to set a precedent where every team asks me to add their graph color to their name. There's quite a lot of work required to get 20 saves prepared and uploaded and 20 team threads opened on release day. I don't really want to have to change all 20 team names before I start.
In any case, since the colors are assigned in alphabetical order, adding the color name to your two team names could reverse their order. You could end up with CFR-Yellow having a green line, and CFR-Green having a Yellow line.
da_Vinci Nov 17, 2006, 10:41 AM This is up to the teams. A relatively inexperienced player may want more guidance than another, and one person's simple tactical decision is another's life or death struggle to avoid making a hash of the whole team's game.
On further thought, this does make it easier for a lesser player to team with advanced ones and not feel so self-conscious. And perhaps such a team is not all generals: the occasional captain or major can benefit from checking in with headquarters.
dV
AlanH Nov 17, 2006, 10:52 AM Some teams and players are able to work with less experienced players better than others. In general it is better not to have too wide a spread of experience in a team, but there are always exceptions.
Teams are complex creatures. A good team can do better any of the players could achieve alone. A bad one will do worse than any player could achieve alone.
da_Vinci Nov 17, 2006, 10:58 AM Teams are complex creatures. A good team can do better any of the players could achieve alone. A bad one will do worse than any player could achieve alone.
An interesting observation ... Seems like success requires good communication, and pehaps a bit of ego control all around ...

IL2T Nov 17, 2006, 11:01 AM In any case, since the colors are assigned in alphabetical order, adding the color name to your two team names could reverse their order. You could end up with CFR-Yellow having a green line, and CFR-Green having a Yellow line.

AlanH Nov 17, 2006, 11:11 AM @da_Vinci: A LOT of ego control :D

What mechanism/algorithm/philosophy do you use to place the unassigned into teams? Do the teams "draft" players? If the powers that be build teams, do you aim for skill matching or skill diversity?
dV
Conquistador 63 Nov 17, 2006, 01:50 PM @ da Vinci: don't know the mechanism, but if an invitation works, we Gipsy Kings would like to have you on our side :)
AlanH Nov 17, 2006, 02:59 PM @ AlanH: Is there a minimum and a maximum on team size? (Did I miss something hiding in plain sight?)
I hope to start teams with a minimum of six players, which I consider a good number. It gives everyone a reasonable rate of play, and allows for the possibility that RL might strike one or two before the game ends. If there's a significant number of players that are new to SGs/SGOTM I aim for seven or eight, assuming there could be a drop-out rate for other than RL issues.
What mechanism/algorithm/philosophy do you use to place the unassigned into teams? Do the teams "draft" players? If the powers that be build teams, do you aim for skill matching or skill diversity?
Not a lot of science goes into it, frankly. It's a lot of gut feel, guessing and hoping, and it's not something I claim any expertise at doing. But heck! Someone's got to do it .
I've seen teams entirely made up of newbies weld together and perform superbly. And I've seen individual players who claimed emperor expertise fail totally to comprehend the skills necessary to work with others in a team at that level. In other words, team-working capability probably counts more than pure (claimed) skill level, but you can't assess those factors without a degree in psychology and a one hour interview for each candidate. Ain't gonna happen!
AlanH Nov 17, 2006, 03:01 PM @Conquistador: That mechanism works as well as any, and probably better than most. And from my viewpoint, at least you can only blame yourselves if it goes pear-shaped :crazyeye:
leif erikson Nov 17, 2006, 04:01 PM @ da Vinci: don't know the mechanism, but if an invitation works, we Gipsy Kings would like to have you on our side :)

Mad Professor Nov 17, 2006, 05:39 PM The six names by Memphis Blues in AlanH's table in the third post look right. We'll be playing this one vanilla. Since there are six names in the list too, it looks like Memphis Blues is just about set to go?
pindicator Nov 17, 2006, 06:26 PM 1. 2.08/Warlords pref, can do either.
2. Emperor level in Vanilla
3. I think I played the first Civ4 GOTM but I can't recall...

5. Fistfull of Dynomite
blid Nov 17, 2006, 08:45 PM AlanH, I signed up with preference for warlords but I'm shown with cyan color. My team are all going for warlords and I'd prefer not being thrown out :)

Fixed. Thx.
Jon Shaw Nov 18, 2006, 03:52 AM I would like to play. I can do either Warlords or Vanilla and I think I'd prefer Warlords, but am fairly easy.
I usually play prince/monarch level singleplayer
I have played 3 or 4 GOTMs, and also the last SGOTM.
I don't mind who I play with
Joemama Nov 18, 2006, 06:49 AM Long time lurker ready to give this a try.

Just moved up to monarch.
Once, but I died and didn't submit.

culdeus Nov 18, 2006, 05:24 PM 1. Vanilla only
2. I only play GOTM so whatever that means. Monarch is about right.
3. All of them, but I don't usually submit due to cpu issues primarily from laptop hibernation issues that would not apply here.
4. I've completed 3 sucession games, not a SGOTM
5. A larger team with more time between turnsets is preferrable. One of my GBs (The Duff Man) may be joining me as a pair he'll post his info later.
AlanH Nov 18, 2006, 07:01 PM IMPORTANT:
Please can any Mac player who has signed up, or signs up before the game begins, please let me know. If there are no Mac players then we can use the standard HoF Mod for vanilla.
Shabbaman Nov 19, 2006, 01:26 AM 1. Which version(s) of the map can you play (1.61/Vanilla or 2.08/Warlords), and do you have any preference?
I prefer vanilla, but I have no problem with warlords. I'd just have to buy it first.
2. Which level (noble, monarch, etc.) are you comfortable playing in a solo game?
Chieftain :D
3. Have you played any Civ4 GOTM games before?
Yes.
4. Have you played any succession games or SGOTM before?
Yes.
5. Do you have a group of players you want to play with?
Team CDZ.
da_Vinci Nov 19, 2006, 04:08 AM @ da Vinci: don't know the mechanism, but if an invitation works, we Gipsy Kings would like to have you on our side :)
Please sign me up for Gipsy Kings (not Gypsy ...? is there a story there?). They made me an offer I could not refuse (both legs are in casts now  )
(edit: "GIPSY is a highly interactive software system for the reduction and display of astronomical data." (from Google)
And the Gipsy Kings musical group, so I guess the "i" has precedent.)
I looked over the GK thread for SGOTM 2 and I think its a good fit. These threads are a great way for newcomers to SGOTM to get a sense of how the process works.
Now, my attorney is forcing me to post the following disclaimer:
"This player is sold AS IS, and no warranty, actual or implied, is made as to its skill, intelligence, competence, or suitability for any purpose whatsoever."
Doesn't this sound just like an EULA?
Looking forward to the game!

TDK Nov 19, 2006, 06:07 AM I'll go with team "Team One" again.

Thanks. I think I knew that :p
I only need Mac players to identify themselves. Windows players will be catered for in any case, whatever version of the mod we use.
AlanH Nov 19, 2006, 09:49 AM @LongLife: Welcome :wavey:
1. Since your post count is currently 'one', I don't think you played the previous SGOTMs in a team, which is the spirit of the question.
2. Have you discussed joining Pioneer Knights with the current team members?
DynamicSpirit Nov 19, 2006, 09:56 AM OK you can count me in.
1. Prefer Vanilla (partly because I'm guessing further vanilla patches are less likely than warlords patches. I don't fancy trying to cope with an SGOTM and a future WOTM that require different patches).
2. Monarch-emperor
3. Yes.
4. No
5. Responding to an invite from Thrallia, so it'd be his team (Geezers)
LongLife Nov 19, 2006, 10:21 AM It's my new nick.
I'll speak to the Pioneer Knights then
mushroomshirt Nov 19, 2006, 12:18 PM Team Lists - Current Database Status
The following live feed off the SGOTM 3 Player database reflects the sign-ups I have picked up so far. Please verify that I have included your sign-up, and shown your version preference correctly.
- I have made no attempt to allocate players, other than showing your preferred teams.
- Unallocated players are in three groups - 2.08 (Warlords), 1.16 (Vanilla), and Either. These are not real 'Teams' at this stage.
AlanH - I'm wondering when to expect the SGOTM3 team threads to be open for business. Our team (Short Straw) has checked completely in except for ungy. It would be great to get the strategy discussion going.
Would we have to formally decide that we are going for Warlords? It looks that way from the my and Danthor's preferences but we haven't told you anything "official" yet.
My apologies if these questions are answered in other places.
Thrallia Nov 19, 2006, 12:31 PM Alan, Dagnabbit has been invited, and I believe he accepted, to join Geezers.

I recommend you get ungy to comfirm here that he's involved in Short Straw.
I'll confirm the team allocations in the next few days. There are still people checking in, and we still have over a week before we begin. It would not really be fair to give threads to some teams before others have even been allocated.
In most cases the version teams are playing will be self evident. If there's a Red or Blue name in a team then that will dictate that they are playing Warlords or Vanilla respectively. Obviously there should not be teams with both :crazyeye: If there are both cyan and orange names then the majority preference will prevail. When the team lists are consolidated to allocate everyone, I'll include a column to specify the version for each team, and I'll post here to let you know it's happened. I'll then expect any issues to be raised and resolved before team threads are opened. That should happen at the weekend, or soon after.
Please note we used to open the team threads at the same time as the game starts. I'm already cutting some slack by opening them a few days early, so please don't push your luck! :hmm:
AlanH Nov 19, 2006, 01:33 PM Alan, Dagnabbit has been invited, and I believe he accepted, to join Geezers.

Thrallia seems to have added an extra 'b'. The name should be Dagnabit and he has previously signed up here.
AlanH Nov 19, 2006, 02:57 PM Thx. Missed that :) Done

Sorry - didn't realize I was pushing my luck! :D
It would not really be fair to give threads to some teams before others have even been allocated.
At the risk of pushing my luck even further, can I make a suggestion that we discourage strategy discussions outside of team threads? There is a temptation in the absence of team threads to communicate with team members via email or PMs. Currently, I don't think this is against the rules (as I read them on the reference thread).
The problem with this, I think, is that after the game is over, we can't see some of the key strategy discussions of the teams who use this tactic. For me seeing these discussions from the top teams is one of the best parts of SGOTM.
Thanks for your responses to my previous post and of course thanks for your time and energy in administrating this competition. I'm sure I would have put away civ4 a long time ago if it weren't for you and the rest of the CFC staff.
AlanH Nov 19, 2006, 04:51 PM Sorry, but I doubt if I could stop players communicating outside of the threads. Some have their own forums where they congregate, others have personal friendships build over time. I can encourage them to replicate their discussions in their threads, but I don't have omniscient powers to check that this is done, and I don't have infinite time and energy to devote to the task.

Which version(s) of the map can you play (1.61/Vanilla or 2.08/Warlords), and do you have any preference? 1.61/Vanilla please

Have you played any succession games or SGOTM before? no
Do you have a group of players you want to play with? not really i guess
I really really liked both reading and solo-playing SGOTM2. GREAT MAP!
Puddleduck Nov 20, 2006, 08:23 AM IMPORTANT:Please can any Mac player who has signed up, or signs up before the game begins, please let me know.
I'm on a Mac and don't have Warlords ... sorry. If I'm the only one let me know and I'll either drop out or buy the expansion. (Is it out for Mac yet?) Don't want to create a hassel.
Also, edited my sign up post to change my difficultly level since people seem to be saying what they can regualrly win at ... not what they usually play at.
AlanH Nov 20, 2006, 08:40 AM The problem is that Mac Civ4 (or Warlords) can not run the same HoF Mod as Windows, so I have to create a special cross-platform version of the mod for a team that includes Mac players. And since the cross-platform mod will not include the fixes for Civ4 bugs, we should therefore extend that mod to all vanilla teams so that we have a level playing field.
The Warlords version that's out for Mac is 2.00, so you can't play Warlords for this game, and it wouldn't make any difference.
Puddleduck Nov 20, 2006, 09:01 AM @AlanH - Yipes! Well if its a case of everyone playing vanilla needing to download and install a new HOF version (plus you needing to code the beast), just to accomode me I'd rather not pick up that kind of karma! :religion:
andybrown65 Nov 20, 2006, 10:00 AM I'm happy with my listing:) in the list

AlanH Nov 21, 2006, 08:21 AM Please don't use this thread for discussions about the game. It is purely a sign-up thread, and sign-ups could get lost in other debates.
If there's a demand for a pre-game thread I'll open one, but in previous games this sort of discussion has taken place in the team threads when they are opened, keeping strategies private.
Terminator3k Nov 21, 2006, 12:43 PM 1. Either, no preference
2. Prince to Monarch
3. Yes
4. Yes
5. Chokonuts
AlanH Nov 21, 2006, 02:02 PM Looking at the team preferences we have currently:
- Gipsy Kings, Memphis Blues, Murky Waters look like Vanilla teams, but igelkott, Frederiksberg, cas prefer Warlords.
- Trash Team looks like a Warlords team with cabert preferring Vanilla.
I shall assume that these players are happy to fall in with their chosen teams' preferences unless I'm advised otherwise.
dojoboy Nov 21, 2006, 03:15 PM Alan, please put me down as a lurker for Team Smurkz.
BLubmuz Nov 21, 2006, 03:30 PM @ AlanH
Fifth Element, after a poll in our SGotM2 thread, decided:
- we'll play Warlords (we think it's hardest than vanilla, but it's hardest for all)
- team formation:
Blubmuz
BrianS
Doom Train
Merum
Sweetacshon
- We are fine in 5, but if Perugia decides to join, we'll welcome him, or if you have some stray guy, feel free to ask, we can probably find room.
- We'll have no captain, i'll be the "spokesman"

da_Vinci Nov 22, 2006, 05:55 AM @AlanH: 1) Do we know yet if we will be needing the cross-platform mod for vanilla?
2) Indulge me if its already posted (search 200+ posts on dial-up? Ouch!), but are there separate laurels (and spoons) for Vanilla and Warlords? From the first post, and the Russian changes between the two, sounds like the play will be different enough to merit two sets.
Maybe put the answer in post 1 as well?

Conquistador 63 Nov 22, 2006, 06:30 AM C.Teams will compete for up to four awards for each version of the game - the Gold, Silver and Bronze Laurels for the fastest finishes, and the Wooden Spoons for the lowest scoring finisher. The number of awards in each game will depend on the number of teams.
From post #1 in this thread.
da_Vinci Nov 22, 2006, 06:44 AM Never mind! :hammer2:
I will have to get my eyes examined! (but first, I need to get my head examined  )
I saw the mention of laurels in the top in the "game" section, but missed the additional detail under notes (I had looked to see if it was in the first post, but did not look hard enough ... sorry! :worship: )

AlanH Nov 22, 2006, 07:04 AM @AlanH: 1) Do we know yet if we will be needing the cross-platform mod for vanilla?
There are only two sign-uup from Mac players as far as I can tell. Dojoboy has signed as a lurker, and has a PC that he can use if he decides to play a turn set. Puddleduck was worried about being the only Mac player, necessitating a new mod for all Windows vanilla players, and has very generously offered to stand down for this game.
So the vanilla game will be played with the standard HoF Mod, version 1.61.008, as featured in the latest GOTM, complete with its fixes for overflow hammers and so on.
McLMan Nov 22, 2006, 07:11 AM Time constraints will prevent me from actively participating in this SGOTM. But I'd like to sign on as a dedicated lurker/potential alternate for Team Smurkz.
AlanH Nov 22, 2006, 07:14 AM Smurkz are soon going to have more lurkers than players :hmm:
Niklas Nov 22, 2006, 07:24 AM It is true, AlanH. We have only four active signups for the next game and will need to take on more players. I convinced our old players not to drop out completely due to time constraints, but to sign on as lurkers instead, and if their situations change they can go active again without the need for divine (i.e. mod) intervention. :)

So there are "official" lurkers (the inactive reserve?) and "unofficial" lurkers (the spectators?)? Do official/assigned lurkers have the same viewing restrictions as players? Has there ever been an issue where a spectator reading various team threads posts something in a team thread that has spoiler information?

1. Signed up lurkers are subject to restrictions on viewing and posting as if they were playing. I've put brackets round their names fopr convenience currently, but as far as the database is concerned they'll be players when we begin.
2. Probably. If you are asking if I read every post in every thread? I do have a life, and it's now way too short to get that anal about this friendly competition.

Did not mean to suggest that you are not doing enough for all of us. I think I speak for everyone in our appreciation for your and the other mods' efforts :thanx: :worship: :trophy:
Only reason to raise it is might there be some automatic solution (read but not write priveledges in team threads for non-team, policy request for spectators to read but not post in team threads, etc.) that might help if this is a significant problem.
Clearly, there is no way it can be policed on a post-by-post basis.

AlanH Nov 22, 2006, 08:27 AM It hasn't been an issue. We do tend to rely on people's common sense - maybe that's naive, but it seems to have worked OK so far. In any case, if people were determined to undermine the honour code of the competition, there are a gazillion alternative ways to communicate without doing obvious things like posting in a team thread.
Niklas Nov 22, 2006, 09:07 AM Please don't use this thread for discussions about the game. It is purely a sign-up thread, and sign-ups could get lost in other debates.
I strongly agree with what AlanH said. Can we please not use this as a pregame discussion thread. Wait for your own team threads and do the discussion there.
AlanH Nov 22, 2006, 09:49 AM I've opened a Starting position discussion thread here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=193718), and moved the posts relating to culdeus' test save to it. Please take note of my requests re. the (mis)use of this thread.
AlanH Nov 22, 2006, 05:42 PM I have rearranged the signed up players into 21 teams. Please review the revised list in post #3, and let me know, here or via PM, if there are any problems with these assignments. I'll add a Warlords/Vanilla version column to the list shortly, but the version for each team should be self-evident from the player color codes. [EDIT] I've added a Warlords (red)/Vanilla(blue) color code to the team names. There are eleven Warlords teams and ten Vanilla teams.
There are two new teams made up of groups of previously unassigned players. They have the provisional names 'New Vanilla' and 'New Warlords' for obvious reasons. These and any other teams may change names, but the team names must be frozen by this time next Monday.
Kodii Nov 22, 2006, 06:05 PM The color coding of the teams reminds me of the results of a US election.
1. Vanilla Only
2. Monarch/Emperor
3. No
4. SGOTM 2
5. The Real Ms. Beyond
Though our team isn't set in stone, I'm hoping I can stir enough interest to reform an RB team.
AlanH Nov 22, 2006, 06:07 PM You'd better hurry  Also, we don't currently have any surplus players to make up your numbers if you fall short. In fact a few of the teams are lighter than I would ideally prefer.
