I know alot of people thought that a top 4 spot in Liberatadores was a bit lack luster (For the Chivas) but, I should remind you that over half of the starting team was in Germany for the World cup durring that game. (Okay that was more directed at William from another thread that I didn't want to bump and go off topic but, the statment stands.....just wait for the next one :scan: CHIVAS !)

haha, don't worry man! I've seen Chivas against Atlético Paranaense in may or june 2005. Got the tickets illegaly (which, in Brazil, is almost as normal as buying a can of coke) for half of the normal price 10 minutes after the game started.. wasn't really impressed with Chivas in that game; Atlético Paranaense really kicked their ass.. and it almost hurts to say that, since Atlético is the rival of the team I supported in Brasil. ;)

But Mexican teams never made it to the final did they? Chivas in 2005 and last year until the semi-finals.. América did the same a few years ago I think.. and that's all. Of course I do realize it's not that long since Mexicans can play..but still.

Mexican have just recently gotten in the last few years (which is why they haven't won yet) They are consistant semifinalist just like they are consistant semi finalist in the world cup ....just not winners thou :mischief: I still have the U.S. to fall back on ......Oh wait a minute....... Well my great grandfather on my dad's side has brothers in Argentina and my Grandmother remairred and married a Argentino. I am 1/4th Italian and have a Italian last name.......does that count? ....It's just not the same :(

since Atlético is the rival of the team I supported in Brasil. ;)

Which leads to the question, how you come you support Coritiba? It has such a cretin name (why not Curitiba??) and it is in the Second Division!
Now Flamengo, there's a nice name, and also a team that is in the First Division. AND Libertadores.

(though we will be crushed in Libertadores, apperently no team over here can match São Paulo - not even Chivas playing at home, which is remarkable).

Coritiba is the old spelling of Curitiba. Back in the ancient times there were two version: Coritiba and Curityba. With time people started using the second one less and less, and right at the moment everyone had agreed on Coritiba, some crazy president or governor or something made it Curitiba. You know that in many accents the 'o' sounds really much like a 'u' anyway. And how I come to support them? Direct influence from the people around me.. I had to chose a team in the city, and I just went along with the people I lived with. They only relegated after I left Brazil anyway. :p And I had the opportunity to see and Atletiba life, with Coritiba winning (1x0, Rafinha made the goal).

Coritiba - does that mean anything specifically or is it just the name of the team? it sounds a bit like cubierta (Cabinet in spanish)

There's a few theories, i'll go from most accepted to least accepted as probable:

cury'i tyb ba = Tupi for 'place where there exist a lot of pines'
Cury'i = Pinetree (a special pine tree typical for Paraná and the north of Santa Catarina)
tyb = to exist
ba = suffix which generally translates to 'place where'

OR

Kur'yt'yba = Tupi-Guarani for "many pinetrees"

Kur = pine
yt = tree
yba = suffix for big amount

OR

Curi-tim = Kaingán for let's go!

OR

Coré-Etuba = ??

Originally Curitiba was named "Vila de Nossa Senhora da Luz e Bom Jesus dos Pinhais" by the way.
