I don't know the details of the politics involved, so I may be wrong, but I would venture to guess that the liberals are keeping pace/passing the tories by not doing anything (coasting). It's like they shouldn't even be in the race (no engine or tires), but somehow they are keeping up (or winning). I think those bumper stickers on the liberals car might explain more of it.

I knew I'd have to repay it once I started earning a certain amount pa so didn't mind. but when I graduated they charged me an extra £2k as a 'Graduation Tax'. That artist works for the Sun, and I know that the Calgary Sun is quite conservative. I would imagine all the other Suns have the same attitude.

Yes, the Suns across this country are conservative, for the most part. And the writing is directed at a grade 8 reading level.

As for the interpretation of the cartoon, Bamspeedy got it in one. The Conservatives narrowly won the last election, in January of 2006. Since then, the Liberals have been operating under an interim deputy party head.
In the meantime, an aimless, leaderless Liberal party have pulled even with (or according to some, have surpassed) the Conservatives in the polls, while the Conservatives have begun to choke on their own election promises.

Just to reply to that. We do technically get free education and I do feel for people like yourself who really get screwed by the system by only trying to better themselves. I was more annoyed at the idea that I'm only getting charged this because I stayed the full course of the degree. People who started sitting a HND and then progressed onto my degree didn't have to pay anything. Crazy. Anyway, back to the Political Cartoons...
