View Full Version : The sleeping asian giants?
Elta Nov 17, 2006, 06:34 PM Poll question do you think that China,Indian,Pakistan,Bangladesh,Indonesia,Philipp ines,Vietnam or Thailand will
make it to the world cup and make it out of their group within the next 5 world cups?
With all of those people I am suprised they haven't produced some stonger teams. I think we may be in for a shock sooner or later 1,2,4,6,7,12,13 population wise. ....I've been watching Chinese Super leauge games ever time I go to eat chinese food at the resturant by my house - I am impressed.
Red Door Nov 17, 2006, 06:38 PM Bangladesh might be coached by Zidane soon. That could mean good things for them. Of the teams mentioned, China has the best chance of doing anything, they've qualified for past World Cups and done okay there.
The real Asian giants are South Korea, Japan, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain.
tcjsavannah Nov 17, 2006, 07:35 PM I remember when I was in China in '04, the Asian Cup was going on. I asked some of the locals what they thought about the Chinese squad and they all had the same opinion. "They suck." They desperately love the European game and can't understand why their own country can't produce even a competitive product on the field.
The games I saw them play, they struggled with Japan and looked really lackluster. No creativity on offense at all.

I have edited that post to properly reflect the true situation of Asia Football as it stands. Considering that Australia was the nation that went furtherest in the World Cup, it would be fair to say that Australia is a powerful nation in Asia. I think that China has the quality to become a powr but not righ now.

Well, I think the point is that most people do not think of Australia as an Asian nation. But they are surely the best team out there in Asia (might dispute a little bit with South Korea).
And of top of that, you have now joined the Asian football confederation (instead of the Oceanian), right?

classical_hero Nov 18, 2006, 06:42 AM Yes we have.
MCdread Nov 18, 2006, 09:08 AM It can always happen, but of the countries mentioned in the first post, the only realistic bet for the moment is China. They have been in a WC before, and have been progressing at least in terms of youth teams, which have had good presences in the Toulon Tournament for example. There's also a good chance that China might host the WC next time it comes to Asia, and that would be a good boost.
Hitti-Litti Nov 18, 2006, 12:13 PM It would be good that Australia would host next WC of Asia. Then one more spot for Asian team would open, and when WC next comes to Asia(21XX?), then I think that China would have developed to a good team.
Tomoyo Nov 18, 2006, 12:44 PM The games I saw them play, they struggled with Japan and looked really lackluster. No creativity on offense at all.And yet the only reason they lost was because of a bad call...

I did not know Australia was in the Asian group. I still think Bahrain is good, they almost made it to the World Cup except for a lucky goal by Trinidad and Tobago.
classical_hero Nov 18, 2006, 11:57 PM The thing is that Bahrain was in our group to qualify for the Asian Cup and we beat them both times and quite comfortably. The first time we beat them we did not even have ourr A or B team on the park and we still beat them 3 nil away from home, so they need lots of work to be a strong football nation. BTW, Ausralia was the first nation to qualify for the Asian cup, but that was because one team pulled out of the qualification due to troubles at home. The other team was Lebanon, so you can understand why they pulled out.

I do constider Australia a Asian country (Fifa wise) I just didn't put them on the list because I was speaking of these giant populations and poor teams - you would think that they would produce a few better players. (that respons was to your post and others)
- Now I wonder if New Zeland has any real chalengers from the rest of oceaina.
classical_hero Nov 19, 2006, 04:18 AM Solomon Islands seems to do well as well as Fiji. In the last play off to see who would face the fifth placed SA team, we played against SI for the right to face Uraguay (sp?) and we easily beat them. Basically Australia was a big fish is a very small pond.
