Virote_Considon Dec 01, 2006, 11:38 AM Summoning gets it for me!
Red Door Dec 01, 2006, 11:38 AM Warfare for me, but Human Knowledge is right behind it.
utro43 Dec 01, 2006, 11:45 AM ah yes....all very lovely, but consider the many potential uses of Ancient Medicine ;)
TopGun Dec 01, 2006, 12:00 PM Warfare it is. Very artfully done.
Mirc Dec 01, 2006, 12:17 PM Can't decide. Just can't decide. Maybe I'll change my mind later.
Wonderful entries, guys!! This and the LH competition are the best this month.
T.A JONES Dec 01, 2006, 09:26 PM Warfare is done up nice down to the bone. Vote sealed
utro43 Dec 01, 2006, 09:36 PM actually, i do like Ares warfare, it's very good.
Mirc Dec 02, 2006, 07:45 AM I like Warfare too, but I also like a lot Art, Ancient Medicine, Modern Mortar, Human Knowledge, Alexander or Sculpture and Summoning! :crazyeye:
Not that I wouldn't like Animal Domestication and Hordes of Darkness!
It's so hard to decide.
Lord Malbeth Dec 02, 2006, 09:28 AM I love the 'Hordes of Darkness'; it got my vote. ;)
kairob Dec 02, 2006, 10:18 AM I was stuck between "human knowledge" and the "hordes of darkness"...
...now there is a sentence I never thought I would say...
Bjornlo Dec 02, 2006, 11:21 AM I'll think about it first, but for now ART is the most interesting to me.
Bluemofia Dec 02, 2006, 07:51 PM I'm going to have to vote art because it is nice and unchaotic.
beboy Dec 02, 2006, 11:08 PM Difficult.. a lot of very good entries this month.. I am tied between Ares de Borg Warfare and Utro43 Ancient Medecine. Those two make me wish someone could make a prehistoric mod (does it exist?? )
I'll go for Ancient Medecine.. :)
utro43 Dec 02, 2006, 11:17 PM YAY! :D now we're tied between herbs and demons...... ;)
Bjornlo Dec 03, 2006, 06:02 AM I added a warmer version of the summoning tech ICON. The flames give off more heat and light.
Mirc Dec 03, 2006, 07:03 AM I decided. I can't believe nobody voted for Alexander/Sculpture. It gets my vote.
Keroro Dec 03, 2006, 09:29 AM I decided. I can't believe nobody voted for Alexander/Sculpture. It gets my vote.
Yay, someone voted for my icon. :D :D :bounce:
Thanks Mirc, that means I don't have to vote for it myself to avoid the embarassment of 0 votes for my first compo entry.
:thanx:
And thanks to all the voters, if you vote for me or not.
Plotinus Dec 03, 2006, 10:03 AM I really like all of these - this was one of the hardest ones so far to decide. I went for Bjornlo's though - nice and dramatic.
utro43 Dec 04, 2006, 10:22 AM what's this? a theologian consorting with demons?!?!?!?!
HERITIC!!! HERITIC!!! HERITIC!!! :aargh:
lol j/k Plotinus ;)
[EDIT: i just took a look again at the polls....interesting,
it's atm a 3-way tie between healing, killing, and satan.
who shall win? who indeed. :D ]
Heretic_Cata Dec 04, 2006, 01:48 PM And i just broke the tie with a vote for the Child Care tech. :mischief:
utro43 Dec 04, 2006, 01:54 PM that's it.....you just made my list! lol j/k
Yorgos Dec 04, 2006, 04:46 PM And now it's a 3-way tie again ;)
I love draws!
utro43 Dec 05, 2006, 12:58 AM and i love Yorgos! lol ;)
thanks for the vote! :D
Hikaro Takayama Dec 05, 2006, 03:49 PM I voted for the Hordes of Darkness, and it comes as no surprise to me that it's losing... Everyone who I vote for loses, it seems.....
Hmm.... This gives me some ideas
Virote_Considon Dec 05, 2006, 04:03 PM Nice ideas I hope, Hikaro :p
LizardmenRule! Dec 05, 2006, 10:36 PM Everyone who I vote for loses, it seems.....
 I'm not sure whether i should be pleased by your vote or not ;):D
Hikaro Takayama Dec 06, 2006, 04:34 PM  I'm not sure whether i should be pleased by your vote or not ;):D
Sorry, man, didn't mean to jinx you..... Next time I'll vote for someone whom I don't like and keep my mouth shut, but only if they are winning at the time....
LizardmenRule! Dec 06, 2006, 05:10 PM Nah, that's fine, man :) Keep voting LMR!! :D
utro43 Dec 06, 2006, 05:18 PM Sorry, man, didn't mean to jinx you..... Next time I'll vote for someone whom I don't like and keep my mouth shut, but only if they are winning at the time....
remind me to stay in your good books Hikaro ;)
Virote_Considon Dec 07, 2006, 05:45 AM Sorry, man, didn't mean to jinx you..... Next time I'll vote for someone whom I don't like and keep my mouth shut, but only if they are winning at the time....
That doesn't sound very nice!
And what happens if you like all the entries? Will you abstain?
Hikaro Takayama Dec 07, 2006, 11:18 AM That doesn't sound very nice!
And what happens if you like all the entries? Will you abstain?
I'll just wait until the last day of voting, since, by then, any jinxing that I could do would have little or no effect anyways.....
Virote_Considon Dec 07, 2006, 11:20 AM I dislike the sound of purposley jinxing. It takes away the "freindly" feel of these competitions.
Hikaro Takayama Dec 07, 2006, 11:35 AM I was just kidding (unless The Thud posts an entry.....), so relax... It just seems that bad luck follows me wherever I go, and I've long since learned to only enter competitions where Skill, rather than Luck is the main determining factor in who wins and loses.
The reason I didn't catch on very fast with these ones is that I THOUGHT it was based on unit/LH/whatever-making skill, but it just seems to be 50% popularity contest, about 30% luck (i.e. a lot of the Warhammer modding team voting last month to give the first Greenskin victory) and only maybe 20% skill.....
Rob (R8XFT) Dec 07, 2006, 11:43 AM I voted for utro43's entry. This was because I liked it the most and wasn't a "popularity" vote ;) .

Your comments on The Thud - fair enough. :D
But - I always vote based on two things, my estimation of how technically accomplished an entry is, and how likely I am to use an entry. I certainly don't think that only 20% of the voters are interested in the skill of the contestants If I were a winner in one of these competitions then I would be grossly insulted by your comments. If you are sore about not getting many votes (though you do actually get a lot considering the very high quality competition you go up against) then that is one thing, but insulting the other creators like this is quite wrong. I hope that I have misread your comments, because otherwise it is quite upsetting.
utro43 Dec 07, 2006, 01:56 PM The reason I didn't catch on very fast with these ones is that I THOUGHT it was based on unit/LH/whatever-making skill, but it just seems to be 50% popularity contest, about 30% luck (i.e. a lot of the Warhammer modding team voting last month to give the first Greenskin victory) and only maybe 20% skill.....
i think there is some truth to what you say.....
popularity no doubt can be a factor, however the comment about "20% skill"
i think is a rather ignorant thing to say. don't you think skill is involved
in creating an icon that people will find useful, or working any popularity you
may have to your advantage?
we have all displayed our skills at creating these icons, and if only one person
were to download, and use any of them then we have succeeded in what we
set out to do...not to win a contest, but to contribute to the Civ3 community.
I voted for utro43's entry. This was because I liked it the most and wasn't a "popularity" vote ;) .
thank-you rob, your vote has helped to heal the wounds to my ego that
Hikaro's hurtful comments made. :( :joke:
but seriously, i really do appreciate the vote! :D
-
Hikaro Takayama Dec 07, 2006, 02:58 PM No, I was saying that most people's votes aren't based on the actual technical skill of the creator, but on how popular their creation's theme is... I.e. Rob's LH got so many votes because a lot of medieval/dark ages/roman era modders wanted an Attila the Hun LH, despite the fact that Rob's LH, IMHO, looks nothing like Attila actually would have.
I did an entire history project for school that was entered into a local competition on Attila the Hun and the Fall of the Roman Empire, and for one thing, he should look more Mongolic (Mongoloid? Mongolish? you know, Mongolian type person), since the Huns were a Mongolic tribe. In addition, he should look like scarface, since every description of Attila that I read during the course of my research said that his face was covered in ritualistic scars, as Huns and Mongolians were wont to do.
Of course, I doubt there are many here who have my deep background information Huns and thier ilk, hence the incredible popularity of the LH.
If it makes you feel any better, you were my second choice, and I'd have voted for you if LMR hadn't entered his awesome Hordes of Chaos entry....
Speaking of which, it makes perfect sense that the Hordes of Chaos are below the Demons (Summoning): That's pretty much how it works in the Warhammer Fantasy Battles world anyways.
Plotinus Dec 07, 2006, 03:15 PM And why has the Tech Icon voting thread suddenly become a forum for criticising leaderheads? Hikaro, I know you're annoyed about not winning more competitions, but please stop going on about it endlessly or I'll give you an infraction for spamming. And I haven't even worked out exactly what an infraction is yet.
Hikaro Takayama Dec 07, 2006, 03:57 PM I'm sorry, Plot... I get like this when I'm depressed, and I have been for the past few weeks for reasons almost entirely unrelated to civ, and I've unfortunately let it slip into here. I'll just shut the hell up from now on.....
Harek Dec 07, 2006, 05:30 PM Summoning is by by far the most intersting. I like the new?? warmer version better of the two in the zip file.
Ringo Mora Dec 07, 2006, 05:49 PM so many nice ones to pick from. I am so grateful.
Nearly for got. I voted for Art. I love summoning, but can't use it.
Hikaro Takayama Dec 07, 2006, 06:59 PM Summoning is by by far the most intersting. I like the new?? warmer version better of the two in the zip file.
Yeah, about that... I'm wondering what Bjorn means by warmer... Is it to inferr that there is more flames/fire or that it is more friendly
Bjornlo Dec 07, 2006, 07:11 PM If you look at the image, the color spectrum (from the light given off by the flames) is what is commonly called warmer. Basically, I thought illumination in the first cut looked a little too white and made it more "fire-like".
It is not more friendly, the subject matter is exactly the same. The camera angle is either exactly the same or as close to exact as I could get it.... foolishly forgot to save the final settings in Bryce (which is what I used to render it).
Hikaro Takayama Dec 07, 2006, 07:12 PM Ok, that explains it...
Bjornlo Dec 07, 2006, 07:16 PM Ok, that explains it...
If you click on the download link (first post in this thread) you can see the two images side by side.

aaargh a tie! Please someone break it.
utro43 Dec 07, 2006, 08:32 PM these are all really great.
i can't believe how close it is! :D
Keroro Dec 08, 2006, 08:48 AM I think I'll go for Summoning by Bjornlo. Very nicely designed icon. :) I can't believe that Beboy only got one vote this week, I thought his entry was pretty impressive. Anyway, I will try harder for next time, ony one vote. Must try harder.
utro43 Dec 08, 2006, 09:13 AM hmmmm
honestly i'm surprised by the popularity of "summoning"....
it just looks like a screen shot from a video game to me.
Stormrage Dec 08, 2006, 09:16 AM Oh its not, Bjorn`s homemeade. You just converted a picture. But I still voted for you cos it looks more techicon-like :)
utro43 Dec 08, 2006, 09:24 AM it is? wow....that's really awesome then! :D
i thought it was from an xbox game.
yeah...mine's a cut'n paste.....but i still had to put some work in it :p
and even though it look's like i won't win, i still think it will be used by
more people, since it's just so darn useful (same goes for Ares' entry).
time will tell ;)
Spacer One Dec 08, 2006, 09:25 AM That ancient Medicine isnt a model?? Im kinda surprised...nice work
Storm Grunt Dec 08, 2006, 10:25 AM Well now, with about a half hour left before the polls close we have 53 voters. I think thats a record! thanks guy's for supporting this competition.
It's still very close between utro43 and Bjornlo,so anything can happen in the last few minutes. Good Luck guy's.....
My vote had already been cast earlier for utro so, Thank you to whoever threw that mercy vote my way.;)
utro43 Dec 08, 2006, 10:42 AM is there a prize for second place? :p
Hikaro Takayama Dec 08, 2006, 11:08 AM Looks like Bjorn's entry really gave 'em Hell (literally  ) Congrats on the win.
Keroro Dec 08, 2006, 11:49 AM Congrats to Bjornlo, :goodjob: I think the fact that your icon was not a CnP effort probably got you a few extra votes. Like mine. Well done to all though.
