Last night a friend in another apt and I hooked up to the computer of a third party by IP address. He had to unplug his router from the computer to bypass an integrated firewall. Tonight my friend and i want to play alone but we both have internet via cable rather than adsl. A thick cable goes into a modem-router (in one box) and I cannot hook it up directly to the back of the computer. How do we bypass our firewalls in the router? Or is there another solution? Please help if poossible!

Hey liba, welcome to CFC! :)
You might try reading this thread (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=146735) about what ports need to be open, or, if you still have questions, just ask a question in that thread. Multiplayer can be very confusing sometimes...

This is done differently for each router, so you'll have to look it up in your respective manual. usually, you can enter a configuration menu for your router when you enter its IP address in your browser. Then you can tell it not to block certain ports. (I don't know which ports are relevant for Civ4, as I never needed that info, but someone else can certainly provide them).
Edit: And again, beaten by Ginger Ale in response quality *and* speed. ;)
