This is part of my continuing quest to spice up the sports forum.

What was your greatest sporting achievement?

For me, it was small. Beating my friend, who is a great tennis player, at a close game. To me it showed that I have improved a lot, and I hope to keep on improving.

Fire away!

This was last year when I played soccer.

My team was up 2-1 and looking certain to win, so my coach put me in at striker (I usually play left defense.) But, the other team scores, but my coach lets me play striker anyways. There's 5 minutes left, and my teammate steals the ball, and gives me a nice pass which I run on to. I'm about 35 yards from goal and I see that their keeper is off his line, so I wind up shoot it, and it's a perfect arc, and it goes into the goal, chipping the crossbar as it goes in. My team wins 3-2 and we proceed to win the division by 1 point.

hmm - well - it's been a while since i played any serious sports in school. but what the hell, here's a shot:

- ran a 5 min 40 sec mile in high school
- rushed for a 100 yds in an american football game while in high school (i was a back-up RB but started at CB on defense)
- knocked in the winning run in a baseball game vs our arch rival in high school
- charged the mound against a pitcher who plunked me 3 times in 1 game while in high school - once in the jewels too
- lowest ever legitimate golf score: 84
- threw a no-hitter in a regional wiffle ball tourney
- once pitched 19 1/3 innings in one day during one of those tourneys

Placed second in the Punt/Pass/Kick tourney for our county at age 10.

Started at QB and won the Football 'Turkey Bowl' in our town vs the Air Force
Base kids (12 under) - who all went to the same school as me. I played for
the Boys Club.

At age 16 my Babe Ruth 16 yr old baseball team went to Alabama for the SE Regionals and we placed 2nd out of 10 teams-Losing to Pensacola,Florida. I had to catch a double-header in 100+ degree heat.

As a Junior in High School our baseball team came in second in the state and
the final two games were a double-header which I played catcher in both.

At age 17 we again went to Alabama for the 16-18 Babe Ruth Regional and
placed 2nd again  - Losing this time to Mobile, Alabama.

As a Senior QB in High School Football threw for 200 yards and 2 TDs vs our cross-town rivals. Was offensive MVP for the season.

In American Legion summer baseball age 18, our team came in second in the State.

Played baseball in college and my team won the Conference Championship
my Freshman year  . I was 2nd on the team in batting average, but
only played about half the games.

Best legit golf round was 71, back when I played almost 4 times a week. Take that El J :) . Now I played a couple of times a month and usually
shoot over 85  .

But what I am most proud of:
Coached my daughter in all sports since she was about 5 yrs, she is 16 now.
The entire Varsity Softball team's infield is my summer league team's players.
In softball she started for the Varsity team at SS as a Freshman. In Tennis
she won JV MVP last yr as a Freshman and again this yr as a Sophmore. In
basketball she led the JV team in scoring as a Freshman and made the
Varsity team as a Sophmore. As a tike she was the menace of the Rec
Soccer League scoring goals like it was going out of style. We won the
championship 3 out of 5 years she played.

Now I'm retired from sports, except for golf and goofing around-- and my
daughter will not hardly listen to any advice I try to give her regarding
sports  .

I once recorded 33 saves in a soccer game, and managed to record over 20 3 times one season. This was partly because of our horrible defense (all by one of these games were losses), than my goalkeeping skills, but I was still pretty good. I was lightly recruited for college, but turned it down because I wouldn't be able to play at any of the schools I was interested in.

I was a so-so basketball player, but I was once scored 24 points in a game against one of our rivals, and later that season, recorded a triple-double (12 points, 10 boards, 11 steals)

In Babe Ruth baseball, I lead the league in Stolen Bases.

Now, i'm hurt, so no sports for me for a long time

Oh man, I have absolutely no good sports achievements. I'm slow, I'm clumsy, and I've always been small.

Soccer: Played one year (7-8 yrs. old or so), did nothing.

Baseball: Played 2 years (8-10 yrs. old-ish), couldn't hit worth a lick (got 1 hit my whole 2nd year), played pretty good defense though (especially at 1st base); was really short then (like 4'3" or something), so I walked a pretty good amount.

Basketball: Played for a long time. From 4th to 6th grade I was one of the best players on a terrible team that won, IIRC, 2 games in 3 years. My game high, as I remember, was 9 points. Didn't do a whole lot in 7th grade, warmed the bench in 9th grade (6 points in 13 games, played maybe a minute and a half per game), played church league for 2 years and averaged 2 or 3 a game.

Miscellaneous: Terrible at tennis, just as bad at golf, ok at ping pong, best ever mile was 7:11.

I competed with 3 friends as 4 person relay in a 10 hour-run

It was very exhausting- the leg was 1.5 km around a small artificial lake, with a 10 m height difference (the route lead down the dam of the lake). We ran in 3 or two round ettapes and changed then to the next member of our relay, and we managed to hold our velocity till the end and managed to run 120 km (I ran 34 km this day).

Not bad for four hobby joggers I think :D

Man, that beer afterwards was hard earned and tasted like ambrosia and acted like wodka in my exhausted body ;) )

edit: another achievement I´m proud of are 3 successive pot balls on a snooker table (on pool I achieve regularily about 4-6 balls every second game, but pool is nothing compared to snooker imo).

Well, it's probably how you're holding the ball. Not that I could coach you over the internet (well, without a webcam;)) but that's what it sounds like to me.

My 14 y/o is like your 16 y/o. Doesn't like to listen. I gave up because he wasn't listening and the fighting over that was too much. Recently he came to me and asked for help again. I told him that if he started up with the not listening, I would stop immediately. We've both had a much different attitude this time around, so it was a fairly low stress week. For me, at least. I know he was a bit worried by it, and it will take a couple more weeks like that before he calms down a bit. But it's moving in the right direction.

I was playing 1st base, someone hit a pop-up by a chain-link fence about ten feet away from the foul line, I ran over, dug my cleat into the fence and leaped into the air to make a miraculous catch. Here's the best part: the ump said the ball was "out of play" (as opposed to being foul) and let the batter bat again. Needless to say, that ump had a very livid eight-year old flip out on him. The ump kicked me out of the game but I was still yelling at him for about ten minutes with my whole team behind me, backing me up.

I managed to lift 100kg at 2 machines at the gym. I have no idea how on earth they are named so i'll describe them somehow.

The first machine was for leg muscles - you stand in supine position on a mobile surface and push with your legs against a stable surface.

The second i have been trying to find a picture of online but i didn't find anything that looked exactly like the one i know. It's a sort of benchpress exercise with the bench at 60 degrees or smthing, like this: \_
But unlike the standard benchpress thing, you life 2 bull-horn-like things above you instead of the weights. At that angle it was mainly a deltoid&pect exercise.

100kg may not seem too much - but i weigh 60kg. :)

Anyway i was never able to get to 100kg ever again. (i stop at 90) I must've had a great day then. :)

Since i don't play any sports i hope this qualifies for the topic.

Scoring 46 for my cricket team. Now, this may not seem all that great, but I played cricket for roughly 6 years, 9 matches a year, and won roughly 12 in total. This was a team that had been bowled out in less than 12 overs once. A team which had had roughly 3 hatricks every 2 years, plus a double hatrick, batting. A team which averaged 40 extras a game. We sucked, to put it simply.

I was terrible at most sports except skiing and baseball. I never did any competitive skiing but I was a pitcher in Little League Baseball.

My best season I had the second hardest fastball in our league. I led our team in strikeouts, wins and ERA. When I was in the groove sometimes I would have 9 pitch innings. Usually I had very good control of my pitches but when it slipped it slipped in a big way and as a result I led the league in batters hit by pitch (7) by a wide margin. I think some people were scared to bat against me.

Edit: I forgot that my first season I got the most improved player award from my team, it is the only sports trophy I ever won.

Playing soccer in the B-team of a Gothenburg division 7 side. From my right full back position I managed to dribble past three players and then lob it over the goalkeeper from about 45 yards out. The fact that the opposition only had 9 players due to bad traffic may have helped. Afterwards I got the idea to make the Eric Cantona goal-celebration which gave me a yellow card for disruption of play :)

Otherwise, I used to be into track and field and was 2nd in the school decathlon when I was 18. I would have won if I hadn't collapsed in the 1500 meters, but I was so tired it was insane. 10 events in one day can do that. The best result there was probably 11.9 for 100 meters.

And then there was the International Students 5-a-side soccer tournament at Strathclyde University in Glasgow where the Swedish team, with myself as captain, beat Oman (of all countries) 10-3 in the final game. The celebration afterwards was long and hard to say the least.

Okay, I have a story from today. Rugby Semi-finals, we're down 12-10 with 10 seconds left. We have the ball at the other teams 22, and the Outside Center gets me the ball (I play fullback), I go outside, then cut inside with a nice juke step. I get tackled at about the 1 meter line, so I drag the other guy as hard as I can. I finally get pulled down by a second defender, but I touch the ball down in the try zone. Game over, with a win, going to the championship, except for one problem. The fat ref didn't see the play because he was too damn fat to walk over to see the play, so he blows the whistle, and calls the game over, with us losing 12-10. SUCH BS!!!!!!!!!!

I forgot to add that once in gym I scored a hattrick in floor hockey against our starting varsity goalie which was a bit of an acheivment since we had one of the best high school hockey programs in upstate New York (5 time state champions despite an enrolement of around 350, part of Slapshot was filmed in our town arena). At first he wasn't trying but after the nerdy kid (me) beat him the first time he didn't want to be embarassed again. Didn't matter.:D My brother and I played a lot of boot hockey in our parking lot. If only my skating was as good as my stick handling skills.

I was a terrible skater, and 5 am is too damn early.

Not the best statistically, but I played a deck hockey game once where the other team got a 3-on-1 break and I was the 1.

They never got a shot off.

I won my Basketball league this year. I've got a nice shiny medal in my desk.
