View Full Version : Do you download classic games to play on the Wii?
Xanikk999 Jan 02, 2007, 12:32 PM If so do you know when they will actually release some good games to download.
They only uploaded 2 garbage games this week. I want to play some good
N-64 classics like banjo and kazooie.
GoodEnoughForMe Jan 02, 2007, 03:03 PM Yes. I have Mario 64, Super Mario Bros. (NES), Donkey Kong (NES) and R-Type (Turbografx). I am also considering Sim City. It's nice to be able to play some of them again.
Games will slowly be released in batches. I wouldn't expect Banjo-Kazooie though, since Rare is no longer producing for Nintendo.

But its an old game.. We cant have OLD games that were made by companies that dont produce for nintendo anymore?
Chukchi Husky Jan 02, 2007, 03:51 PM I can't because I don't have a wireless connection, but if I did I don't know if I will. The games they have for download here are PAL conversions that are 17% slower and with borders that take up 10% of the screen instead of optimised games.

I am not sure... but I think that Nintendo needs permission from companies to put their games on the virtual council.
TBH, I am not entirely sure, this is something I should try to look up, because there are some old Rare games I would like to play, but I don't know their status.
Edit: Thank god for wikipedia:
Unnamed Nintendo employees have reportedly speculated that licensing issues will be a predominant factor in determining whether a game is available for Virtual Console[7], giving the examples of GoldenEye 007 and Tetris as games that might be too expensive to license for the Virtual Console. Tecmo has announced it plans to "aggressively" support Virtual Console by releasing classic games such as Ninja Gaiden, Rygar, and Tecmo Bowl.[8] Tecmo was the first third-party game developer to release a game on the Virtual Console (Solomon's Key on the NES). Since then, Capcom and Konami have also released titles.
Matt Casamassina of IGN reported that Rareware titles not featuring Nintendo characters would not be available to download due to Rare's current licensing, but neither Rareware nor Microsoft (who currently has majority ownership of Rareware) has confirmed this.[9] SNK Playmore has recently announced intentions to help support the Wii Virtual Console by releasing the Samurai Shodown series and a few other games to the Virtual Console.[10] Midway also plans to bring classic Mortal Kombat games to the Virtual Console.[11]

Also, games are released Mondays at 12 PM EST in North America.
Sullla Jan 02, 2007, 04:24 PM I have not downloaded any games as yet, but that's mainly due to the fact that I'm a video game packrat and still have all of my original consoles and games. (The NES doesn't work so well anymore, but I can legally run all of those games through emulation on my PC.) I even have a Windows 95 PC sitting here on my desk that I saved just to play classics like Civilization, Doom II, and Warcraft II. Oh yes, and Commander Keen. Anyone remember that? :)
One of my friends who also has a Wii has already downloaded several games, and we had quite a good time with Bomberman '93 and Gunstar Heroes. He's much more of a casual gamer than I am though. In other words, I don't think the downloadable content will necessarily appeal to the hardcore gamers who have already played the older games, but there's a very good chance that simple, cheap games from the past will be popular with casual fans. And that could be very, very lucrative for Nintendo.
Xanikk999 Jan 02, 2007, 04:49 PM We cant have goldeneye or banjo? Thats infuriating.
Why the hell did rare go with microsoft and start making crappy lackluster games anyway.
I cannot think of a game by rare that was recent and not crappy.

What kind of a game is that anyway? It defintly does not look appealing.
Its gotta be the only one though that is good to other people.

That is EA. Electronic arts makes the sims crap. And its not good either.

EA don't make The Sims, they distribute them. Maxis are the makers :)
Chukchi Husky Jan 03, 2007, 06:13 AM We cant have goldeneye or banjo? Thats infuriating. I read somewhere that Nintendo are trying to get Goldeneye on the Virtual Console.
steviejay Jan 03, 2007, 08:48 AM They have to get GOldeneye on the VC seeing as it was THE game for the 64.
I don't have it connected up yet (one connection and the 360 has that for the moment) but when I do I plan on buying alot of SNES and NES games. oh yeah
azzaman333 Jan 05, 2007, 05:19 AM Virtual Console will be awesome if I can get F-Zero X on it, I LOVE that game. (I've beaten all cups on the highest difficulty with all 30 drivers)

Your telling me but somehow its literally dominating the PC sales charts.

Or perfect dark, for that matter, which was by far the best shooter on the 64, perhaps for all Nintendo systems.

EA's got a of money to throw around for marketing purposes and R&D, even though the support is crap, and the games are not really that innovative (ie. the NHL series for the XBox has only changed graphics and UI, gameplay is virtually the same ol')

Good sales does not equal good games.
Look at several kiddy games based on kids movies for example.
Sullla Jan 17, 2007, 09:18 AM That's for sure! Did you know that the video game version of the movie "Happy Feet" sold 1.8 million copies?!
It's all about the distribution, stupid!

Happy Feet is by no way only marketed towards children, it's got some really Melancholy moments in it and a big message about resource conservation. :)
