View Full Version : New Unit - Arabian Horseman
Lab Monkey Apr 11, 2002, 05:49 AM A nice addition to the growing ranks of variations on the humble knight, I believe. If anyone wishes to write a text entry for this unit, go ahead, I'm not up to scratch on this facet of history.
Here's the first .ZIP. Remember you need both (one of my Pikeman unit .zips has been downloaded more times than the other half, making me think that there's some poor buggers playing with half the files), and rename the folder to the .ini file.
With both .zips you should have Default, Run, Attack, Fortify (which doubles as victory).
Lab Monkey Apr 11, 2002, 05:51 AM Here's 2 of 2, the .ini file links to other unit's sounds, so check them if you have altered the names of any of the original folders. I chose what seemed the best sounds, but as my speakers are still down.....
DOWNLOAD BOTH .ZIPS! :aargh3:
Sorry to shout, but I've noticed that somehow .zip 1 has had over 30 more downloads than 2.....
Lab Monkey Apr 11, 2002, 05:51 AM And a little sample....
Lab Monkey Apr 11, 2002, 05:52 AM And another....
Black Fluffy Lion Apr 11, 2002, 05:54 AM love it :D another great unit
Kentonio Apr 11, 2002, 07:57 AM Beautiful! :)
Kentonio
Lab Monkey Apr 11, 2002, 09:03 AM I had to be careful when pasting the attacking graphics, at one point it looked as though the horse's head would be chopped off!
My next unit will be another medieval unit, the Tueton knight that's knocking around here. Someone posted the .gif with half the walking frames, guess I'll just have to draw the rest. The trouble is that it's resolution is too high for civ3, I've had to crunch it down, and it's lost sooooo much defenition. He still looks pretty sinister, though.
I may hand draw my next unit and just scan in the frames....
Colonel Kraken Apr 11, 2002, 09:18 AM Simply unbelievable. Wonderfully done! I am always thoroughly impressed with the talent that is displayed in these forums.
nonnog6 Apr 11, 2002, 09:28 AM I believe we have another great unit animator!!!!!!!
GREAT WORK!!!!!!!:goodjob: :goodjob:
Draken Apr 11, 2002, 04:04 PM Lab Monkey: If you want all the bmp of the teutonic Knight animation I can send you them. I have extracted all unit from AoK and it's expansion.
This way you wouldn't have to draw all the part you're missing.
By the way Nice unit :D
Cobweb Apr 11, 2002, 05:26 PM Have I missed something on the download? I have all the animations, but no graphics for both the Arab Horseman and the Eastern Pikeman. I have ran into this problem with several downloads. Am I downloading incorrectly?
Ed O'War Apr 11, 2002, 06:24 PM Both units have two files that need to be downloaded. Are you sure you got both of the files for each unit?
Cobweb Apr 12, 2002, 03:58 PM I downloaded all four files and just did again. Still no unit_32.pcx's. Got all the animations for both, but no unit graphic. Any other suggestions? Both units show good work and I would like to use them.
nonnog6 Apr 12, 2002, 04:53 PM There is any pediaicons or civilopedia....I am planning to make them and post them;)
Unless someone else is already making them...

You can make it very easily. Save the animated image, convert it to a JPG and work to obtain a little picture that you can copy into your units32.pcx.
Here my unit32.pcx that come from my mod (not finish my work). It countains more units icon than the original unit32.pcx (139 instead of 83. Thanks to SpencerH that has made this work too good). And some other that I have kept cause we don't know the future.... :)
You will find the arabian horseman on it.
Kryten Apr 12, 2002, 07:59 PM Fantastic animation Lab Monkey!
With the Knight, Pikeman and Dark Sheer's Crossbowman on one side and the Arabian Horseman, Eastern Pikeman, Swordsman and Horse Archer on the other, at last I feel that I've entered the crusades!
Looking forward to your next project :goodjob:
Exsanguination Apr 12, 2002, 08:53 PM hey Kryten! how are you doing on your units? I love the horse Archer - great work. I'm still looking forward to the other units you were making. I am currently working on a different mod, but my alex the Great mod is believe it or not still on the plate.
Oh, btw, dont mean to be rude! I love the animation, Lab Monkey! I probably will incorporate it into my new mod. Good Work! Keep it coming.
Kryten Apr 13, 2002, 02:10 AM I am still working on that Macedonian Pike Phalanx....sorry that it's taking me so long Exsanquination, but it should be ready in about a week.....
Atum Apr 13, 2002, 03:45 PM I made some civilopedia icons from the rider and immortal civilopedia icons.
I also included the PediaIcons text.
Great job on the unit Lab Monkey!
Lab Monkey Apr 15, 2002, 05:55 AM Thanks to all of you for filling in the gaping holes that I left, I'm a bugger for missing out the icons and stuff, I know. I wasn't that sure what to write for the 'pedia text, I'd I (rather arrogantly:king: ) assumed that people would just customise their own images.
Laziness on my part. Tell you what, I'll hand draw a bunch of pictures for all of you, just 'cos you're so wonderful:love:
!
Eclipse Apr 15, 2002, 04:47 PM If anyone would prefer, I created a new set of Civilopedia icons that maintain the "horse to rider ratio". :crazyeye:
Purest Warrior Apr 16, 2002, 10:35 PM Just downloaded this beautiful animation and I really want to use it, especially since I usually play Persians, but how do I go about it?
...and how do I specify that this anim. should only be used by the Middle Eastern civs (I would like the European civs to use the existing knight)?
If anyone could point me to a forum I would be grateful.

I hope Lab Monkey doesn't mind, but I've attached the HorseArcherReadme.txt file below. In there you will find full instructions on how to add new units to civ3 by using the Civ3Editor. Just substitute the words "Horse Archer" with "Arab Horseman" and you should be ok.
BTW, I suggest giving this unit an attack of 4, a defense of 2, and a move of 3 (one day in the future I want to make a Crusader unit with stats of 5-2-2).
Purest Warrior Apr 17, 2002, 06:48 PM Excellent! It's done - I think.
Thanks for the walktrough, Kryten.
I have saved it as civmod.bic, which means that next time I start a game, I just load civmod.bic and the changes will take effect, right?
Is there no way to implement it in my current game?
Kryten Apr 17, 2002, 07:08 PM As it says in the HorseArcherReadme.txt file, "if you try to add a new unit to a saved game, civ3 sometimes throws a wobbly"!
However, if you really are desperate to see the unit in action, then you could rename all the Arabian Horseman .flcs to say, 'Horseman', then slip them into the Horseman folder. Then each time a Horseman is built you will see an Arab on horseback instead of the civ3 animation (don't forget to make copies for the original Horseman .flcs first of course!). This works because as far as civ3 is concerned, nothing has changed as all the names of all the files are the same both before and after the game was saved.
But creating new units, and sometimes even just changing the stats, in a saved game can cause problems.
Purest Warrior Apr 17, 2002, 08:23 PM Allright, I guess I'll just have to wait, then.
...but let me get this right:
If, instead of starting a new game, I load the modded one (civmod.bic), will it be exactly as starting a new game, except the changes I made are implemented?
Sorry for going a bit off-topic here, but it seems that there are quite a few experienced modders here.
Lab Monkey Apr 23, 2002, 07:08 AM Out of interest, are people using this as a replacement for a horseman, or the knight?
I was going to call this unit 'Arabian Knight', but I didn't want all those 'no pun intended' remarks. Though it would be interesting to build 1001 of them...
Fez_Monk Apr 23, 2002, 08:16 PM Im going to use it as a replacement for the knight in a Middle East Mod I'm working on.
Purest Warrior Apr 24, 2002, 09:32 AM I modified my civmod.bic (as I was told (snip)), but I wanted to finish my ongoing game before I started a new one, so I have not seen them in action yet. I am very much looking forward to seeing it, though.
I used the Arabian Knight to replace the Persian (obviously), Babylonian and Egyptian knights.
I replaced the native American knights (Aztec and Iroquois) with the horse archer and I am thinking that maybe the horse archer would be better as an Egyptian knight, also.
I have no military historical knowledge to warrant these decisions, but, using my intuition, it seems right.
peiball Apr 24, 2002, 12:53 PM THIS UNIT IS GREAT, ARABS HORESEMAN WERE THE MOST POWERFUL IN THE HISTORY!! :goodjob: http://
Fez_Monk Apr 24, 2002, 07:55 PM If your going for historical accuracy, then the American Civs should have no horse units. Thats why the Spanish kicked the Native American's arses. They had no horses to fight with. Only after the colonization of America did ''Mounted Warriors'' appear.

No, off course, but, if I was going for historical accuracy, the Americans would not enter the game until the beginning of the industrial age.
So what I mean is, to me, it makes sense that, the Iroquois, for example, would have the horse archer as an equivalent to the European knight and as a natural extension of the Mounted Warrior.
PCHighway Sep 02, 2002, 12:42 AM LoL, Labmonkey, if you thought 3 was a big difference between downloaded zips, look at them now. Ones 800 and the other 500.
Kryten Sep 02, 2002, 12:45 PM Well, I don't like to boast, but I think I may currently hold the record.
The 1st zip file for the Eastern Horse Archer has been downloaded about 1,000 times, but the 2nd zip file has only been downloaded 380 times! (even though it clearly states at the top of the thread that both zip files are required in order to make the unit work properly! ).
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To Lab Monkey:-
Could I have your permission to to make some slight modifications to your Arabian Horseman, such as removing the scimitar and buckler and replacing them with a spear and a cloak, so that it can be used as Darius III's "Royal Kinsmen" bodyguard in Exsanguination's Alexander the Great scenario? (acknowledging youself as the creator and owner of course by simply adding "alterations by Kryten" in the unit's readme file).
It's just that I don't like to start mucking about with other people's units without asking them first.
Thanks. :)
