View Full Version : AI Problem (i think)
Traxer2 Jan 15, 2007, 06:26 AM Had a problem with AI .. atleast i think its the AI hehe...
OK i was attacked by a litle pile of some 60 chariots/spearmen/axemen/swordsmen ... had a whole 2 turns to match that .. well anyways.
I had a nice defensive location .. hill and river + walls and good defensiv units. the enemy actually attacked with 50 or so units the very first turn :eek: ok here is the problem i had 3 spearmen with combat II and umm +25% mounted bonus promotions , but even tho the enemy started off by attacking with his 19!! chariots the spearmen never defended .. instead my axemen and crusaders did ?? So by the time those chariots had all died .. my axemen and crusaders were hurt bad ... the enemy now attacked with swordsmen and axemen ... sure some crusaders and axemen defended but also the spearmen (since they were unharmed). I didnt actually loose the city since the enemy stoped attacking wth the last 10 or so units...
So imho the AI is bugged! a spearman with 150% bonus vs mounted should like umm defend vs mounted units.
I understand the crusader with city defense bonus might have a higher strength even vs mounted units but if both have 99.9% ... the spearman should defend allways vs mounted!

BetterAI mod component has done some funny things with the AI in the game (See Bug thread). I don't know about picking defenders out of a stack, but I know in terms of the numbers of units involved in some of those stacks of doom, I think the guys are already working on it, and waiting to see what changes Blake (the BetterAI designer) comes up with.... so it's being worked on as far as I know. :)

Learn that units with highest strength defend, not with best bonus. +25% hill defance and +23% comba II, gives him almost 50% + 50% from city walls or culture its 100%. So spearman has 8 strength.
Now axeman. He has same bonuses, so he has 5 strength + 100%, so strength 10.
Crusader has 16 (or 18, dont remember of hes 9 or 8).
Has for combat vs special unit tipe (spearman has mounted) does not make strength higher, but lowers enemy strength. So Chariots have 2 strength when attackong spearman instead for 4, and spearman has 4 instead for 8.
So ai picks strongest units, so its crusader.

Thats the problem .. if 2 units got a very high chanse of winning , it should pick the unit thats most likly to be the unit aimed at defending vs that type of unit (spearman vs chariot) , since the crusader in my case take damage even tho it wins and i would need it vs the pile of swordsmen attacking after the chariots.

Hi Traxer, keep in mind that what Anaztazioch is describing is actually the way Civ4 (Be it Vanilla or Warlords) sets a defender from a stack. This behaviour has nothing to do with the mod. And as much as it may be inconvenient in terms of your strategy, there may be no way to fix it - Computers can't think for themselves after all. The game has no way of knowing what you intend to do with the units in your stack in advance. :) Human beings can't read minds, computers surely can't either. :p
As we all know, the game can only run on scripts, pre-set instructions which dictate to it the way it should act based upon what the best choice would usually be, not what the best choice is. You may have to simply reposition your counter units out of harm's way and time your counterattack when your defensive units have absorbed the AI's blow. Not an ideal solution, but it's not something the team have control over I don't think. :)
Traxer2 Jan 16, 2007, 04:06 AM Hmm i thought it would be possible to make it so that a unit that has a clear counterpart (again i use spearmen vs chariots) and has a very high chanse to defend (99.0%) should be auto picked from a stack...
The main problem i have is that well . its my units but i cant choose the defender .. no tactical warefare when you defend, only when you attack. :confused:

Hmm, if you are attacked by enemy(bombarded for example), you can't dictate him wchich unit he should attack (hey, stop bombading my tanks, attack my SAM's) :p
Anaztazioch Jan 28, 2007, 06:02 AM Sad thing that AI choosing defender usually makes cover and bashing promotion worthless. Why to give your horseman bashing and attack axeman and archer, when archer will defend.
