This is a place where all of us can discuss about signatures. You can tell your opinion of sigs of other members, or tell about your signature.

In your face, Abaddon! :p

RESISTANCE IS FUTILE...
"Drugs are bad, it's a common fact!"
"I wanna roll wit' da gangsta's, but they all think I'm just to white and nerdy... Maybe I'm just to white an' nerdy...'It looks curiously disjoint. Also, the term "intellectual graffiti" comes to mind, but I'm unsure why.

Copying my proposed sig from the last thread:

Free will won't. You're a complex program, nothing more. And for all we hear "I'm a freethinker", the right authority can still override (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milgram_Experiment) two of three and order them to kill.
Expect more subtle viruses in the future.

I struggled with the form of the last line. Most of the versions had me sounding like a fearmonger. Ironically, those who dismiss manipulative memetics are probably the most manipulable.

Am I wrong, or is "manipulative memetics" just a fancy way of saying propaganda?

For all the talk of "memes" on hear these days, one'd think one'd see some attempts to turn it into more than a metaphor. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places, but this far I've seen little to suggest that "memetics" is more than, well, what the kids would call a meme these days; something like "O RLY?".

(My signature is an invitation to people to check out the MPrize. I actually agree with the Pope, on this one. I am equally tolerant of all religions . . . except my own, which I place above the rest. The only way to think that all groups are truly completely equal is to belong to none. Thus the only way to be truly equally tolerant of all religions is to be atheist, or at least not religious.

Of course, he probably meant something else, with which I might take exception.

One of Ungern-Sternberg's favourite hobbies after he was promoted to the rank of Major-General was to enter taverns, consume enough vodka to achieve double-vision and then fire at the other patrons, logging how many he could hit. To his astonishment, it remained a constant fifty percent of those he aimed at. Despite his tiny head, it took enormous quantities of alcohol to make him drunk. After a few years of developing his hobby, drinkers across Siberia learned to flee when he kicked open cafe doors with a boot.

You do realize that this isn't a literal story, the fig tree is to represent the Temple which is becoming "unholy" in Jerusalem. That's why the author Mark throws in the story of the Cleansing of the Temple in between the two fig tree stories.

It's repeated in the other gospels, but there aren't two incidents.

No, the basic interpretation that I have seen most often is this:

It was, indeed, before fig season. Jesus was as likely to know that as anyone. Hoever, apparently some fig trees either keep some figs over from winter or fruit early. Thus, if they have already grown leaves early, they are likely to have fruit as well. This fig tree, however, in what is seen as an analogy to the Israelite nation of the tme, made a great show of being ripe (ie had leaves early) but no fruit to back it up. So Jesus a) showed that he has power to destroy as well as create and b) showed what he thinks of those who make great claims to something (be it ripeness or piety) but don't actually have it.

And like I said, every single other fig tree from that era is dead by now as well, why lament the one?

It's repeated in the other gospels, but there aren't two incidents.

But you're saying that a description of what Jesus did, in plain text, is not to be taken literally? I've never seen anyone say that before

Yes, he might have cursed it, but not for the reason you wanted him to have cursed it. He cursed it to show what the Temple has become. Remember, Fig = Temple in the story.

There was a fig sig, and so of course since it was related to religion, it became the topic of discussion. In the end, it's all about religion or the lack thereof here on CFC OT.

Your political compass
Economic Left/Right: 4.38
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -3.03

Which means, somewhat more right than left economically and somewhat more libertarian than authoritarian. Of course, most of the questions I could not adequately answer on a simple 4 choice radio box.

I knew that is what it meant, I just didn't know which got negative and which positive scores.
