The Balland of Irving (the 142nd fastest gun in the west, "141 were faster than he, but he was looking for 143" :D ) was a comic song on radio in the USA in the early 60s, I presume from your post that it was performed sometime on the Benny Hill Show or perhaps written by him (the 45rpm version I was familiar with was definately not Benny Hill's voice).
The line, which you correctly discerned as being adapted from that song was in the final verse:

At one time I was planning to use varient of that commonly enough, so that when it became familiar, I could just use the shortend tag line
"It's dead, Jim"
and everyone would know what I meant. A recognised tag line somewhat superior to Ming's (at Poly) 'Its toast". But our community has been well enough behaved that I did not have to close many threads.
