View Full Version : Vikings Monarch. warlords 2.08
dragomaster Jan 20, 2007, 09:52 PM Hi everybody.
I have read many threads, every game till now have been a lesson about this game. I'm now starting a simular. The difference is that i'm not wery used to the game and there are many wonders i don't know anything about and building witch could have a huge inpact on the game. I want you all to share your thoughts about witch techs and outhers that is importent and what wonders priorice. I hope this will be as mutch entertainment for you as it have ben fore me during the outher threads.
my mother toungh is Swedish so please exuse me for some bad spelling witch i know will occur if it hasn't done so already.
As you can see, here is the staring position, I'm playing as the Vikings, large fractal map, sea level normal and and climate temp. they start with Fishing and Hunting, traits is aggresive and finacial. Hunters have the the privelige to start with scouts.

we start beside a river with rise and two fish. If i settle in place we will get some hills and forests. down south we can see a secund river witch will give os acces to some cottages later. Shood we settle in place if not where shod we go with our scout?
futurehermit Jan 20, 2007, 10:28 PM Settle in place with plan to move capital? Will make a good gpfarm but a bad capital for a financial leader imo.
dragomaster Jan 20, 2007, 10:33 PM we could maybe gain little by settle 1 east on the hill. 1 fich and rice and only one sea square.
Elrohir Jan 20, 2007, 10:42 PM I'd suggest settling in place. If you move, you sacrifice a fish or rice, and if you're playing on Monarch you don't have a whole lot of time to wander around and try and find a better spot, anyway. If you aren't going to regenerate, you'd better settle soon or you'll never catch up; the first few turns are crucial.
Move the scout on south, and if nothing else presents itself, settle in place.
dragomaster Jan 20, 2007, 10:50 PM I followed Elrohirs advice and moved scout 1 south. Good new is that he found gems.

Antilogic Jan 20, 2007, 10:55 PM You can always settle in place, and use your capital as a great person city. That is a strategy I often pursue...also, with the three food resources, you will be able to run all three hill mines continuously while running specialists--you could turn your capital into a half-decent production city as well.
Another trick that is rarely used (from what I can tell) is moving your capital to your future commerce farm later in the game and using the Bureaucracy civic then (maybe Vassalage initially to conquer land). It's all up to you, but that spot isn't bad for an early game start.
futurehermit Jan 21, 2007, 07:02 AM If you can get colossus I guess your capital will be decent enough for $$$ until colossus is obsolete, but then I would move your capital at that point.
Antilogic Jan 21, 2007, 10:53 AM I tend to not build the Colossus for a variety of reasons (typically because I need more troops at that point), but that would give you 2 (base) + 1 (Financial) + 1 (Colossus) commerce per turn. Essentially, close to a full-power town that can support itself. That's a route worth considering.
aelf Jan 21, 2007, 12:12 PM This is a great start. You have plenty of food (you start with Fishing for those seafood) and there's a grassland gem that is not covered by jungle in your capital's BFC (so you can immediately mine it). You are beside a river and there's another river to give your grassland cottage an extra commerce. There are some forests and hills for production. Add to those the Financial and Aggressive traits - you're ready to pwn!
dragomaster Jan 21, 2007, 03:37 PM I Settled in spot as outher sugested. High pirity techs at the moment is Mining BW and Agriculture. Colossus as some sugestet need Whel, pottery and MC and IW seems to be importent becous of all jungle all think will be sourunding our capitol.
So what do you think about reserch path, how about Mining > BW > agriculture > whel > Pottery > MC
anyone what do you think. Wee need a worker for mining gems to speed up our reserch and a worerkboat for fish. Shood we begin with workerboat or scout. what do you think?

czechdude Jan 21, 2007, 03:49 PM I vote for workboat, your city can grow and you can improve the land. Try and time it so you grow and complete the workboat on the same turn, then start a worker.
futurehermit Jan 21, 2007, 03:51 PM I'd say that opening is pretty good, although if you want to be expanding you have to get alpha (sue for tech), currency and col (keep economy afloat) at some point as well. Forges are great though for pumping stuff out quickly.
dragomaster Jan 21, 2007, 04:10 PM i often go for alpha before MC, Imost often reserch IW and AH before MC aswell, how early will outher civs reserch MC maybe we can delay some time to go fore the GL and litterarure. math is temting for currency aswell.
I dont think it will be copper around though, jungle and grasland is a sign for this so if we go for colossus then we maybe need to go early for MC. whel what reserch path shod we take?
Elrohir Jan 21, 2007, 04:34 PM Build a workboat first, that's more important than getting another scout out. And research Mining first as well, with those two fish you won't need the rice up until your city is size 4 at the least. (2 fish, plus gems) I'd saying Mining, then Bronze Working, then assess where the copper is. If it's nearby, we can see how the territory looks and see what worker techs you need - probably the Wheel to hook up the copper. If you can't see any at all, then rush to Archery so you aren't left with only Warriors when the Barb Archers and Axemen start coming for you.
futurehermit Jan 21, 2007, 05:46 PM The ai usually delays on mc so it's up to you which way you want to go.
dragomaster Jan 21, 2007, 06:19 PM I played our scouting turnd out good with a goody hut, what whod we gett from the tribe som angry tribesmen maybe? :mischief:

alot of jungle, this jungle will be werry hard to expand thru. IW will be even more importent now. what shod we reserch after BW and where do we put our next city? shood we claim the far away ivory rice site or shood we get the clam gem site, a pig site looks good to?
Feel free to say what you think.

dragomaster Jan 21, 2007, 06:47 PM how do I make the round quick links?
ratrangerm Jan 21, 2007, 07:11 PM You've got yourself a pretty nice map there... a lot of jungle, but it's balanced by some good resources.
Looks like founding near the pigs would be good for your second city, then pushing to Iron Working so you can clear jungle and found a city where the Gems and Clam are, then push to claim that Ivory for your fourth city and beeline to Construction.
The hills could contain either Copper or Iron but likely not both. You probably don't have Horses nearby, but if you get to the Ivory, that will make up for that.
Antilogic Jan 21, 2007, 10:18 PM I believe you are correct to prioritize Bronze Working and Iron Working, given your position. Clearing that jungle and planting some cottages would give you a good economic backbone.
I can see a future beast production city along that southern shore, in range of the pigs for food with mines on all those hills. That's something to consider when you are planning your future cities.
Getting archery was lucky--I rarely get techs (haven't gotten one in the last few games, if I recall correctly). It's a good start, especially if you have metal (which you will find out by prioritizing the techs above).
In this case, I would try to get Agriculture quickly as well to build a farm on the rice (will speed up settler production), as well as BW/IW. I don't plan my techs that far out in advance, but those three seem important.
DrewBledsoe Jan 22, 2007, 01:20 AM Iron Working is going to be an absolute neccessity(for all that nasty jungle), but as you've got archers, if no copper shows up you're not immediately dead in the water.(military wise)
Since (judging from the map), many of your cities will be coastal, an idea I often use when playing the Vikings is to get sailing very early on. This a) means that all coastal cities are communicating and trading, thus any resources found once connected to one are connected to all (without the need for a large road network that needs defending), b) it unlocks the viking unique building, which c) facilitates exploration and d) if you find a friendly civ, once you have open borders you have early int trade which leads to better relations, and you may get a religion earlier (is the last a good idea:)?)
EDIT: My personal tech path would be bw, sailing, iw. The first 3 cities will be nicely situated on the coast, and can all build lighthouse (very slowly while working the coastal tiles for 1 food 3 commerce. Likewise, I wouldn't bother with workers at all on this kind of map until you get IW, as there is so little that you can improve until then (ok gems, a couple of mines) then what? Nothing to chop and you can't actually work any future cities' hills until you get the food to balance. Build order, workboat, wb, barracks, archer, archer, settler(pop rush)..growing (2 fish no time at all)..archer, archer, settler, (pop rush)..repeat till you have a few decent sites. By this time you should have Iron somewhere and half a dozen longterm cities with nowhere for barbs to spawn..then build infrastructure and reasses :)
Btw thats, just what I'd do for that particular map, with that civ, in most cases I'm a worker first man :)...but the above strat does actually work well for vikes.
dragomaster Jan 22, 2007, 06:40 AM Hi again!
I will continue with anouther round later this day. at work now but will give you a preview. I have settled two more citys and have built my third settler. i am thinking where to build this city. on spot 1 or 2 is most temting, 1 will give us nor more than rice, 2 will give us iron, rice and ivory. iron is outside the fog in this map ifory will be ours untill i have built some culture attacking improvments agains the greekish city founded south.
site two is what i shood go for, site 1 is werry bad as a city me think.
http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/69073/namnl_s.JPG
futurehermit Jan 22, 2007, 06:45 AM I would be inclined to settle on the plains hill (assuming it's plains) by the pig first. It will at least speed up production of a lighthouse...
Elrohir Jan 22, 2007, 10:37 AM Have you explored near Site 1? There could be some seafood or something good in the fog.
dragomaster Jan 22, 2007, 10:39 AM yes it's only seasquares
Elrohir Jan 22, 2007, 11:01 AM Well, once you clear the jungle over the rice, it won't be so bad; it'll be a decent cottage city. Is there any food near the Elephants? A new screenshot would be nice! If there is, I'd suggest grabbing the elephants first, to be on the safe side, before grabbing Site 1.
dragomaster Jan 22, 2007, 05:23 PM i'm sorry not uppdated. i will give new screens within two days, just started to work after my wekation. i'm realy tierd at the moment.
dragomaster Jan 23, 2007, 03:36 PM Part 2 (2200 BC - 1400 BC)
It has been a good game so far, two gems near, one in the capitol and one in my third planed city. this will realy speed my resech in early game.
I had my first settler and was aiming for a spot south of Birka. Funny enough the settler asked us "what my plan was" so i will tell you.
http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/69073/settler.JPG
As you can see this will make a pretty good capitol in the future. when it built the palace it will take the gems from Birka, have two more riverside cottages, iron, pigs and plenty of hills. As a future Capitol as many sugested; Odense whod be a proper name. That city is one of the the earliest viking citys in Scandinavia, still exist today and is lying on the biggest iland in Denmark. the settler went there and Odense was founded.
http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/69073/Odense3.JPG
after this Birka created an archer and workboat. odense built a barrack, it will be a PC in early and late game. reserch aiming towards writing. I want to make open boarder agreement to see what alex got. he will be my first target. not good to have alex around so wy not kill him.
our scout exploring the map and found Ramses II a bit earlier. here you can see more gems. wonder if alex will clame this site, its pretty near his boarders. I hope he's not do it to early I want to have good pace on reserch and if he mine those he will keep up with us.
http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/69073/Scout.JPG
after wrighting and sailing it was 1600 BC, river gems is nice to have in capitol :D however I had my second settler ready do pick next dot. pretty good spot. many overlaps but in the begining of the game it will be a nice PC, and later a mediocer CC but it's coastal and here comes the plan. I will try to grab the greate lighthouse and later the colossos. so that could be a nice monny city after all. when masonry is finnised i will whip Birka and continue thowards greate lighthouse. techs afterwards will be math and my worker will work the gems, this will bost my reserch a bit thowards math and when math is finnished i will chop river forest south of birka and get 30 hammers to g lighthouse. I hope it will work.
http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/69073/setler_three.JPG
1480 BC Visby was built on the spot and my worker starded to work the gems. two turns later i stopped.
http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/69073/Visby.JPG
i have played a bit further but i don't want to continue that save cos i want to inquiry from this piont. and tokogawa is far east just so you know.
shood we continue thowards MC or shod we go thowards CoL. there is no religons on the continent so far, CoL maybe make us Confusian and the couthouse is nice to have when next city is founded. or shood we reserch MC and get colossos? maybe literature and then music so we can grab the greate artist and maybe notredam?
Alex don't seem to have have any metals yet so an early war is not out off discussion.
there is some spots i want to grab and i shood build a boat and search the shores for future traderutes and theres an iland north of birka to explore aswhell.
I begine with the maps of possible citys.
