View Full Version : two units with the same name!
taube87 Jan 21, 2007, 08:59 AM it'a not easy to find names for every units especially generic units, but there is a method to solve this problem. you must edit the font file like in this guide (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=184912) and remove one or more characters. i uploaded one example with a removed @. Now you can name your units like:
Kampfpanzer
Kampfpanzer@
Keroro Jan 22, 2007, 08:11 AM I believe that you can also just put a space at the end of the name to get the same effect, no?
taube87 Jan 22, 2007, 11:12 AM yes, but a unit with a long name (perhaps: langstreckenbomber) and a extra space can be to big for the "to build list" like in the screen:
polyphemus Jan 23, 2007, 05:32 PM I added this to my library, well done!
WilliamOfOrange Jan 24, 2007, 06:10 PM so, let me get this straight. You label both units the same, but put some symbol after the one, and because the font is changed, the symbol is invisible. Is that how it works?

Basically, yes.
polyphemus Jan 24, 2007, 11:48 PM oh, thats actually pretty smart, i thought you ment something else...

Hmmm, but I'm wondering, if you change the font to a smaller one then you could still just put a space at the end. But having a character would make it easier to identify the difference in text documents, so I guess that is the benefit. :)

:goodjob: the @ is like a invisible character and this character don't need any space in written lines
edit: two screens to support my intention
sry, for my very bad english! :crazyeye:

I have tried this. It works OK in the editor. But I cannot rename the unit folder in Windows with a space at the end - It won't accept it. I have two "flavor" units. Both want to be called LAMPS Helo (Light Airborne Multipurpose System). They each have different unit folders - one is S-60 Seahawk, the other the Lynx. The S-60 wil be a flavor unit for American and most non-European Civilisations. The Lynx for European Civs and some other Civs that I know use the Lynx in reality. They both have exactly the same stats.
For now I just call one LAMPS Helo. and the other LAMPS Helo (without the fullstop). I guess the font editor is the only way I could refine this?

OK, before I mess around with my LSANS file I want to understand this more fully. Does installing the new LSANS file change the font for the entire game?
Or can you use it to edit specific bits of text within the game?
So, for example, would you make it so Kampfpanzer was in one font but the @ at the end was a different font. Is that how it works?
taube87 Feb 09, 2007, 03:56 PM civ3 uses the game-specific-font lsans.ttf and the editor uses a normal windows font
molesworth Feb 09, 2007, 04:14 PM I'm sorry, I still don't understand how that lets me have two units with same name.
taube87 Feb 10, 2007, 08:48 AM use my font an give your second unit a "@" at the end!
molesworth Feb 11, 2007, 02:50 AM So then I could I have same Civilopedia entry for both units as well, yes?
taube87 Feb 11, 2007, 06:54 AM jep, :) and a nice font!
jackdubl Oct 31, 2007, 05:56 PM I keep trying this and it doesn't work; the @ just shows up on the name like I didn't do anything. Where exactly do I put the LANS file if I'm playing a modded version of Conquests? Does this work on a US version of the game?
taube87 Nov 01, 2007, 07:59 AM are you using vista?
in this case right-click on lsans and click "install font" ...
Roman Legion Nov 05, 2007, 05:33 PM I will definitely check this out later, it has peaked my interest, but I'm far too tired to do anything about it now.
WilliamOfOrange Nov 06, 2007, 12:37 PM Since this thread has been bumped, let me make a comment and ask a question. It seems that in changing a font, I have done something which causes an extra little space between certain letters. It only happens every once in a while, but in a civilopedia entry, there will be a little gap in between the letters that do not show up in notepad, but do in the game. It is enough to actually break up the work LINK in a link and therefore, the game does not create the html link because of this.
Any thoughts, ideas or similar occurrences?
Virote_Considon Nov 08, 2007, 05:21 AM I occasionally get this with the default font...
WilliamOfOrange Nov 09, 2007, 11:24 AM Yeah, I think mine is back to default font too. It's annoying and I would like to fix...I guess it's just a matter of getting a new font.
I think I found an answer here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=3825199&postcount=32):
Rambuchan beat me to it. Great advice there, and I agree that giving information on what things do in the pedia is essential, while giving information on what they are/were etc is a very good idea. Here's an extra tip: if you have very long lines of text, the game will insert odd spaces into it when displaying it in-game. So despite what the Firaxis advice says, it's best to split your text into shorter lines rather than have each paragraph in a single line in the text file.
WilliamOfOrange Nov 11, 2007, 12:18 AM My only question is, Do I mess around with Word Wrap in Notebook, or do I simply make more paragaphs? I have some pretty lengthy unit descriptions gong to the end of the #DESC portion.
CEO Daedalus Feb 12, 2008, 05:50 PM :bump:
Where do I put this font document, folder by folder?
CEO Daedalus Feb 17, 2008, 12:10 PM  anyone
taube87 Feb 17, 2008, 02:17 PM put the fold file in the "c: ..\civilization3\conquests" folder.
don't forget to make a backup!
Steph Jul 05, 2009, 10:32 PM Much easier method: Use my editor, and you can have exactly the same name.
taube87 Jul 09, 2009, 08:04 AM jep, that's much easier...
