I have never loaded a mod other than the scenarios that came with Civ IV for Mac.

I have tried w/o success to follow the scant insctructions on insidemacgames.com to load the CivGold mod.

I am looking for simple easy to follow step by step instructions for downloading and installing CivGold v3.7 for Civ IV on Mac.

I would also like a recommendation for a text editor to use. Is Textedit good enough?

Depending on which version of CivGold you're attempting to use, you might find this thread (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=186917) useful, as I've recently been through the same process and was given some valuable help by others on this forum.

Most of the text editing work has been done for you.

There's a set of modified files attached to this post. It's a complete modified copy of the /CIV Gold3/Assets/xml/Text/ folder that you get when you download and expand the CIV Gold3 mod.

There's also a fix for the /CIV Gold3/Assets/xml/Civilizations/CIV4LeaderHeadInfos.xml produced by Welnic for the ATTITUDE_FURIOUS error I didn't track down. It's specified in this post in the same thread. You could use TextEdit for that - just search for ATTITUDE_FURIOUS with a space after it and remove the space.

If you want to try doing similar surgery on other mods then you could use TextEdit, but it's likely to be a long hard struggle. I use BBEdit, which has a little brother called TextWrangler. It can find and replace all invalid characters in a file at a stroke.
