It's been a while since I started this project, (back in March of '06 to be exact) but I am finally done remodelling the South Dakota class battleship. My first version I used a Hasewaga 1:700 scale plastic model as reference. It was okay for a first try, but the Hasewaga model wasn't the best reference. So I purchased plans of the USS Massachusetts from the Floating Drydock. I rebuilt everything. One of the biggest imrpovements is the hull. For use in Civ3, I won't be using the deck texture because I get an undesirable look at Civ scale. I have included version 1.0 (old) and version 1.1 previews. Note that Civ color hasn't been applied yet.

Wow I like both of those although you can really tell the improvements you made for the 1.1 version. The first version looks like it would make a nice what if generic BB for countries lacking major capital ships.

The second series of South Dakota class ships were a welcome reinforcement to the Navy during World War II. With their nine 16” guns, these ships were a formidable weapon and their powerful engines could drive them to 27 knots. Though shorter than their predecessor the North Carolina class, these ships were better armored. The first series were cancelled due to the Washington Naval Limitations Treaty signed in February 1922.
Ships in Class
SOUTH DAKOTA (BB-57)
INDIANA (BB-58)
MASSACHUSETTS (BB-59)
ALABAMA (BB-60)

Terrific news. As a particular affecianado of the capital ship, it is most heartening to see these latest installments. I've got some pictures of post WW2 speculatively modernized SDs hanging around for a laugh, based on Friedman's works.
