Stormrage Feb 01, 2007, 01:25 PM Hmmm... Another hard competition.. I think Wyrm`s is the most complete one, but I think I`ll go with ED`s. Yes, its another spearman.. but I think it has much superior animation to most other spearman units I saw.
Miles Teg Feb 01, 2007, 01:27 PM Modern worker:goodjob:
Thorgrimm Feb 01, 2007, 02:23 PM I HAD to go with Hikaro's Captain Jack Sparrow. I just love that character from the movie. :D
:nuke: Ţórgrímr :nuke:
Wolfhart Feb 01, 2007, 02:30 PM The Beaver Worker is a gem, but I went with Ed's spearman this time because like Stormrage I'm very much impressed with how the attack anim turned out :goodjob:
Edit: and he takes the lead! :)
nc-1701 Feb 01, 2007, 04:25 PM la_dav's PLZ05 155mm
Because I like modern units, Topgun's helicopter looks great to.
Spacer One Feb 01, 2007, 05:03 PM well...all things concidered...guess who I voted for???
odintheking Feb 01, 2007, 05:17 PM Loved the beaver and (especially Boba Fett), but I had to vote for Captain Jack.
T.A JONES Feb 01, 2007, 05:48 PM lil' beave
Bluemofia Feb 01, 2007, 06:16 PM Captain. Jack. SPARROW! :D
Though the Beaver worker and Boba Fett came very close.
Hikaro Takayama Feb 01, 2007, 06:20 PM Wow, this month's competition is a close one, especially between the top three, who are (currently) Captain Jack, the Medieval Spearman and..... The Beave?! Then again, I shouldn't be surprised, what with all the "Beaver Worker Movement" sigs around here.
Thanks for the votes, and it looks like whoever told me to make a historical/semi-historical unit using the PDM was right, although that is NOT the reason I made Captain Jack... I made him because I LOVE the PoTC series, and hoped that my making the main charachter might egg some of the other unit creators into making more units based on the movies and possibly even get some mod maker to start on a PoTC mod....
I'm also sorry I haven't been posting any units lately, but I've been recently shanghaied by Age of Empires III Heaven, and am working on what, hopefully, should be a short AoE III mod project. Hopefully you'll be seeing more of me this month, and I guarantee that I'll have something for the themed competitions as well as possibly next month's competiton.
As for whom I'll vote for in this contest... I'm still undecided, and will wait until closer to the end to cast my vote.
Red Door Feb 01, 2007, 07:41 PM Captain Jack Sparrow!
Blue Monkey Feb 01, 2007, 08:20 PM A month with many, many units that deserve my vote. In the end I voted for the beaver worker because of the humor in the characterization, because of it's "beaverness" like the tail pats and the seed planting, and because it resparked an old idea of mine to do a mod based on Varley's Gaean novels.
Plotinus Feb 01, 2007, 08:55 PM I have to admit that after I entered the beaver, I looked at the other entries and remembered that Captain Jack Sparrow was competing this month, and wished I'd waited another couple of days! But we shall see what happens...
Though I have to say, I was annoyed when Hikaro made him as I'd been thinking of doing so myself at some point. On the other hand, he did a great job, so I can't really be annoyed!
Hikaro Takayama Feb 01, 2007, 09:31 PM Glad I could save you some work Plot ;) I like your beaver worker unit a lot... besides, it could find uses in other mods, like, say, if someone wanted to do a Battlefield Earth mod and use it as a Chatovarian Worker (since they were a beaver-esque race, at least according to the book's description... They even ate trees like beavers)
Rob (R8XFT) Feb 01, 2007, 11:09 PM I've gone with the Medieval Spearman - but it was a tough choice this month.
Steph Feb 02, 2007, 01:46 AM Hard to decide. Technically, they are all very good. For originallity, the beaver is the best.
However, I'll vote for Wyrmshadow, as I think his set has the most "original thinking".
Heretic_Cata Feb 02, 2007, 02:44 AM :run: :run: What to vote, what to vote ? :run: :run:
KingArthur Feb 02, 2007, 04:23 AM This month's comp is a cracker. Well done to all the unit makers.
I eventually plumped for the pirate but the beaver was a very close second.
LizardmenRule! Feb 02, 2007, 04:44 AM No joke, this line up could be a "Unit of the Year" comp
TopGun Feb 02, 2007, 07:22 AM "Workers of the world unite!" ..well, I voted for the modern workers - I've always hoped Wyrmshadow would get around to finishing this very original unit concept. But I must say, the beaver worker definitely gave Wyrm a run for his money in my book! :goodjob:
Yorgos Feb 03, 2007, 06:11 AM I always have a hard time choosing in the unit of the month poll... let's see, we have Plotinus' imaginary beaver worker, Wyrmshadow's original modern worker, Hikaro's Johnny Deep animated, Odin's talent... and more…
Oh well, I think I’ll keep my vote to force a draw if possible.
Orthanc Feb 03, 2007, 10:50 AM Beaver worker, though, as everyone else has expressed, it wasn't easy, that modern worker is so needed and so nicely done, but the beaver-ness tugs at my Canadian heart strings too much to pass up.
utro43 Feb 04, 2007, 11:05 AM Asiatic Swordsman for me!
i can't believe he didn't get more votes!
i love this unit! but there are so many other great ones,
actually they are ALL fantastic!
Miles Teg Feb 04, 2007, 05:05 PM I think the Asiatic swordsman, while good cant compare to the others. I would really like to know how Plontius manages such a high ratio of units to awards
odintheking Feb 04, 2007, 05:09 PM Yay! Someone voted for me! I don't expect to win, seeing as it's only like, my second unit. Especially against Jack Sparrow, Boba Fett and the beaver, not to mention Wyrm's workers.
Bluemofia Feb 05, 2007, 12:29 AM This is going to be a very close one... I can't wait for the results to finish! :)
Kyriakos Feb 05, 2007, 03:18 AM Beaver worker!
I mean, who <remembers CFC rules>
mmmrrrr Feb 05, 2007, 05:48 AM Were you going to make a lewd joke about working the beaver?
...I'll stop there :(
WerBackIII Feb 05, 2007, 06:00 AM Beaver Worker... makes me dream for... SUBI's BEAVER UNITS!
Cool, Plot!
Rob (R8XFT) Feb 05, 2007, 06:16 AM Yay! Someone voted for me! I don't expect to win, seeing as it's only like, my second unit. Especially against Jack Sparrow, Boba Fett and the beaver, not to mention Wyrm's workers.
I actually really liked your unit and will be using it in my mod. I voted for the Medieval Spearman, but wanted to let you know you came a close second ;) .
Keroro Feb 05, 2007, 06:49 AM I'm pretty awestruck at the amount of work that would be involved in getting a full set of worker animations together, so I had to vote for one of these. Has to be said though, the medieval spear attack animation is a cut above most other human units. It could possibly have won if the mighty beaver worker :D had not been released this month.
Beaver worker, though, as everyone else has expressed, it wasn't easy, that modern worker is so needed and so nicely done, but the beaver-ness tugs at my Canadian heart strings too much to pass up.
I thought that Canadians were historically more likely to kill beavers for their pelts than vote for them. ;) Or am I just perpetuating outdated cultural stereotypes?
Plotinus Feb 05, 2007, 08:37 AM Hey, the competition still has several days to run. Anyone could still run away with it. I agree that the Medieval Spearman is a great unit though - it's really good to have embryodead creating again.
I'm amazed that Boba Fett hasn't got more votes so far. It's Boba Fett!
Mirc Feb 07, 2007, 04:48 AM What to vote? :wallbash: This competition is so great!!
Hikaro Takayama Feb 08, 2007, 02:35 PM Congratulations to Plot on yet another win... Now we know what REALLY happened to Captain Jack: it wasn't the Kraken that got him, it was a bunch of beavers chewing holes into the bottom of the Black Pearl.
Oh, well, there went my only shot at ever winning one of the regular unit competitions... Hopefully I'll do better with the themed competitions.....
Mirc Feb 08, 2007, 02:36 PM Hey, I told you each time Plotinus enters a unit, it wins! ;)
Hikaro Takayama Feb 08, 2007, 02:45 PM Well, I'm not even THINKING about entering any of my next several units into the regular competition... I mean who really would vote for one of my crappy airships or some bunny girl units (aside from Goldflash, who has an insatiable desire for Cat-girls and Bunny girls for reasons he hasn't divulged, and which I'd rather not know)....
The problem with these competitions is that my units are really too... goofy/wierd/off-the-wall/can't think of the proper term right now, to actually be useful or wanted by anybody besides me and my useless mod. :(
Come to think of it, Captain Jack Sparrow falls into the same category, but people like pirates around here for some reason....
At least with the themed competitions, the other entries will be equally limited in application, so that fact alone helps level the playing field... Just too bad I don't have the talent to take advantage of it....
Heretic_Cata Feb 08, 2007, 02:54 PM Heh, congrats Plotinus. :) It's obvious the Beaver Worker Movement have made their presence noted. :D
TopGun Feb 08, 2007, 02:55 PM Congrats, Plot, on a well-deserved victory.
And thanks to the few and the proud who voted for me... it is appreciated! :)
Wyrmshadow Feb 08, 2007, 04:22 PM Find me a Mad Hatter.
(a joke for the historians)
Spacer One Feb 08, 2007, 04:34 PM Congrats Plot...I am so happy that this unit lives on in timeless victory...and against such amazing competition...guess the BWM was bigger than I thought...
and once again, thank you to all the unit makers who submitted this month, your work is greatly appreciated by those of us who cant make units...
Hikaro Takayama Feb 08, 2007, 05:04 PM Find me a Mad Hatter.
(a joke for the historians)
Now, now! Turning Plot's unit into a Grenadier's hat just wouldn't be nice :nono:
.....Although I did hear that beaver pelts still can fetch a pretty good price. :p
LizardmenRule! Feb 08, 2007, 05:37 PM Congrats Plot
Plotinus Feb 08, 2007, 06:01 PM Thanks, all. I'm glad people liked the unit. Hikaro, your entry this time was great - I voted for NavyDawg's in the end, but it was really a toss-up between yours and his.
odintheking Feb 08, 2007, 06:03 PM Congrats, Plot! Alot of great contenders this month, :).
Hikaro Takayama Feb 08, 2007, 06:17 PM Thanks Plot, coming from you that means a lot... I'm also shacked and amazed that Boba Fett didn't get hardly any votes... But then again, he was up against the Beaver worker (I knew as soon as you entered that much requested/supported unit that my cause was lost, but still to come within 4 votes of winning is something I suppose), Captain Jack Sparrow (which, as predicted, got votes from all the Pirate fans on the forum), one of Embryodead's units (Embryodead entering this competition is pretty the same level of challenge as if Kinboat himself were to enter), Wyrm's much-requested modern worker, etc.....
Looks like poor N. Dawg's excellent unit fell victim to the same phenomenon that got my Galbadian Elite Soldier.... I.e. Historical/Heavily requested units > Dudes in Power armor.
The only unit I'll be making in the forseeable future that might actually get votes in the general contest would be my President Rufus Shinra king unit (basically a dude in a white suit armed with a sawed-off shotgun. i.e. your typical mob boss type), but I won't be getting to him for a while... I have a massive airship project that I'm itching to complete, but judging from past contests, vehicles usually are mid-tier performers at best, and in cases of fantasy/sci-fi vehicles, they usually rank at the bottom of the pack... Just like dudes in power armor and cat/elf/bunny/any girls.....
odintheking Feb 08, 2007, 06:38 PM What about that Ork War machine thing? That'll get some votes.
Hikaro Takayama Feb 08, 2007, 07:28 PM That's still on hold... Right now, my priority is the Archadean Air-Dreadnaught.... I.e. a high-tech airship about the size of a Light Mon-Calamari Cruiser armed with heavy laser cannons, missiles and fighters (at least based on what I was able to gather from the Strat guide and that Nightwish FF AMV that Stormrage linked).
Animating the unit attacks with the fighters will be somewhat difficult, but managable if I use a similar technique to what I used for the attacks in my Land Battleship (i.e. have the fighters deploy as part of the fortify animation, then have them buzzing around and shooting during the attack animations)....
Still, I need to get my next three LHs done before I even think about making any more units.
NavyDawg Feb 08, 2007, 09:06 PM I voted for NavyDawg's
Well, that really put you in the minority.
Great job on another winning unit, Plot, and to all the other unit makers for a top notch competition.:)
Flamand Feb 09, 2007, 12:52 AM Congratulations Plotinus with your well deserved victory! Yours is the trophy and the title... :)
http://img344.imageshack.us/img344/9530/umotmtrophy25zc.jpg
Quite the competition this month... Since there were so many world class units this competition I decided to give more throphies this month:
:trophy: goes to Plotinus
:trophy2nd: goes to Hikaro Takayama
:trophy3rd: goes to the Wyrmshadow
Show them with pride... ;)
Yoda Power Feb 09, 2007, 01:00 AM Congratulations Plot :goodjob:
Your unit was defiently one of the best this month, even though there were other that were great too. :)
Keroro Feb 09, 2007, 04:15 AM Congratulations to Plotinus, :goodjob: and woe to the vanquished. :D The other units were excellent, and there are several there that I probably would have voted for on another month if the beaver hadn't been in the mix.
I think that, due to the amount of work involved in the animations for worker units, this is probably Plotinus' most deserving win yet.
Yorgos Feb 09, 2007, 07:53 AM Congratulations Plotinus for another deserved trophy!!!
(BTW when I saw that the first place was settled for the Beaver Worker, an outcome I liked, I decided to vote for Odin to award his talent)
Hikaro Takayama Feb 09, 2007, 11:12 AM Sweet! I finally got a trophy in the Unit making competition! Silver's plenty good for me, since I'm usually the guy who is dead last. :D
BTW are those smilies on the standard list?
Virote_Considon Feb 09, 2007, 11:51 AM @Hikaro: Yup, I think they are ;) :trophy2nd:
embryodead Feb 09, 2007, 01:30 PM Gratz to the winners! :goodjob: especially on the Furs :yumyum:
Stormrage Feb 09, 2007, 02:36 PM Congratulations guys!
Grandraem Feb 09, 2007, 03:59 PM Congratulations to all the winners, especially Plotinus for the first place victory.:goodjob:
Orthanc Feb 09, 2007, 04:11 PM Plotinus takes it again! How many trophies is that now? Four? FIVE?
Anywho, congrats. Now our Canadian civs really have their unique units set out for them: Cavalry-Mounty, Jet Fighter-Avro Arrow, Worker-Beaver Worker, just to name a few...
To da winner, and everyone else in the competition:
odintheking Feb 09, 2007, 06:06 PM Congratulations Plotinus for another deserved trophy!!!
(BTW when I saw that the first place was settled for the Beaver Worker, an outcome I liked, I decided to vote for Odin to award his talent)
Thanks, man. I'm surprised I got as many votes as NavyDawg, he should have gotten more.
