What kind of a dorm is that then?

I thought dorms were supposed to have Wi-Fi?

Our campus isn't wireless accessable yet, but in a few years it will be. Our library is the only place on campus with Wi-Fi.

It was all night down I-81. Ended up veering off I-80 and make a 60-mile detour just to get back on it (since I don't know where everything is). Then we got pulled over and got slapped with a huge ticket.

At least we made it, safe and sound. And my cat loves this new place! Details to follow whenever I get more time or I'm back in NYC.

Virginia Cops, they're a real pain in the @$$.

Due because of being a target and my homophobic views.

It's best that I should leave before I get into deep trouble.

Try to be balanced CG. You really need to focus on interviewing a lot. Posting at CFC should be the reward after a hard days work of researching, practicing and interviewing. Maybe set some goals as far as how much you've accomplished equals how much time you allow yourself to post. Just me thinking out loud.

Well, I know I made some 60 posts while in North Carolina, but I came back after a long trip yesterday. So even though I still don't think I add any degree of reasonableness to the board, I do return with the same New Yawk attitude when it comes to attacking wannabe political rivals from the federal to the local level.

And yes, I'll have to complain about some things in rants and rave on some other things.

I have decided that it's time for me to move onto better pastures and get some serious help.

I would like to first of all apologize to anyone whom I have annoyed in the past. Especially to those I have asked for advice. I also would like to apologize to the mods that I have gave a hard time. I also would like to apologize to those whom I argued with relentlessly.

I have a problem that causes me to take the internet a bit too seriously and makes me act out in ways that I will regret later on. I am going to seek serious help on this one. I dont know when I would be back, but all I know it would be a time when I am ready to be reintergrated back into the CFC community.

Hello, I'm a long time lurker in OT, beginner poster.

I live in London and work as an accountant.
My principal uses of my spare time are a) studying for my professional qualification b) drinking and c) playing civ 4 bts.
I sometimes combine b +c, to make the most of my time off.

Also to avoid any confusion I am Irish, not English or British and out of the total of 314 months in my life so far I have spent 18 in France (9 Paris, 9 Clermont-Ferrand), 14 in London, 6 in Milan and the balance of 276 on a small farm in Galway, west of Ireland.

After a particularly pointless debate on here earlier, I realized just how little I actually accomplish by spending so much time here - generally the people I talk to don't learn anything, and most discussions either fizzle out without anything being resolved, or I leave because I'm sick of some troll refusing to stop post inanities and playing semantical games. I do learn some things here, but generally things I can learn elsewhere, and less than if I just spent that time reading up on topics where I don't know enough. And some of my real life things really need my attention.....So, I'm taking a break. I'm going to not post on CFC OT for a month or so, and after that I'll see if I want to come back. If I do, then it'll probably be less than before. If I don't, well, it's been fun guys.

Ah ye, good bye Gainy. Where he leaves, I guess this is where I come in. Back in 2006, I was a big fan of Civilizaton ll, having owned it for quite a while. A shame Civ lll was never ported to the Mac, which I use.

Either way, at christmas I finally got Civ 4. I also owned Civ 3 for the PC, but we have only ONE PC in our entire house. I always loved game companies like SEGA and Nintendo, and my father is a computer programmer. And he knows which platform is superior. Yes, the Mac. But now I own Warlords and I'm planning on getting the Mac version of BTS when it arrives.

My name is Josef Steel, the full translation of Josef Stalin, I don't live in Russia, and I am not a communist.

As long as your first new thread isn't some variant of "What's your <religion> <political belief> <age>", you'll be fine. :)

I'll be at Oglethorpe the 25th-27th. I'm considering going to school there. It's all still up in the air right now, but I'm testing the waters up in Atlanta to see how I like the place and to see what kind of scholarships I can get.

What's happening in Minnesota?

Let me know if it really gets to be 40 below; when I was there in the summer of '06, the locals all talked about the cold winters as a badge of honor.

Girlfriend and her folks here. And thanks to this massive heat wave, it's 40 above, not 40 below.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I have an important announcement.

Effective 1/11/08, I am checking out of here, and plan to pretty much leave OT. There are a few reasons:

1) I have been here a long time...several years. While its cool that I've gotten to know (or at least, as well as one can over the internets) a lot of you guys, a lot of the OT discussion has really become derivative. I know what a lot of you are going to say before you say it. We discuss a lot of the same topics all over again. Why should I read another RELIGION IS IRRATIONAL AND DUMB thread if I've read the same damn thing for 3 years?

2) My motivations for posting have changed a little bit. As a person, I've changed A LOT over these past few years, which is to be expected, seeing as I left high school, and went to college. But after my dad died and mom got sick, and I was bounced to a community college for a year...to be honest, i just lost patience for a lot of the dumb petty crap I used to think was important...or even how I used to think.

The things that have kept me at OT over the last few years were the insights from people who had more life experience than I did...people like Whomp or JH, since being a student, I don't have that many adults to ask questions to anymore. In 2005, I might have been interested in 80% of the open threads...now, its more like 15 for me.

3) I spend a LOT of my time with politics. I'm a political science major, so I'm usually in government classes all day. Then I go to work in my government job. I talk about government stuff with my friends and family. And then i'm here. Now, I'm really passionate about this kind of stuff, and I do have a lot of other interests, but I'm worried I'm getting burned out, which isn't healthy for me intellectually, or professionally.

4) I have over 7,000 posts here. Thats feels like kind of a waste to me. I think I'm going to take all that energy, and try to focus it on more productive endeavors...like writing more (since i don't get to practice that very much at OSU). If I focused the energy it takes for me to post on improving my voice by say, blogging or writing essays, I'll be using that "work downtime" a lot more productively.

Its been fun guys. I like a lot of y'all, and I've learned a lot. I'll still be around fiftychat, and have email...but for now, I think its time for my next adventure

We'll miss a voice of reason; something the world could use a lot more of. I wish you the best in your future plans for public office, and if I find myself in Ohio (or you find yourself wherever I happen to end up), you've got my vote.

Please be sure to let us know (or at least let me know!) if you tour in the New England or greater Atlanta area anytime in the future...

And hey, I know it sounds corny and cliche, but this place just won't be the same without you.

Matt--Thanks for your kind words. What you said means a lot to me because I think you're an awfully solid person.

People here will say "you'll be back" ... I say come back if you're interested in discussing something you want to talk about. There's no timeframe for interesting discussion...

I'm sure you'll have a positive impact on more lives than you know over your lifetime. Here's a little something I have at my desk to remind about life.

From Mark Twain--
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.

Cheers! B

My friends,

Four months and seven years ago our moderators brought forth on this cyberspace, a new forum, conceived by Thunderfall, and dedicated to the proposition that no computer game is Civilization's equal.

Now I find it engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that forum, or any forum so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure a quality Off-Topic subforum. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. I have come to dedicate a portion of that field--this exact spot--as a resting place for my final OT post. It is altogether fitting and proper that I should do this.

But, in a larger sense, I can not dedicate -- I can not consecrate -- I can not hallow -- this OT subforum. The lesser posters, active and inactive, who posted here, have so thoroughly damaged it, far above the poor power of the greater posters to add or detract. OT will little note, nor long remember what I say here, but it can never forget why I leave here. It is for lack of time, lack of interest, and lack of quality posts that I dedicate this task of leaving which this goodbye post will so nobly advance. Lastly, I am dedicated to the great task remaining before me -- that of thanking those great honored posters who with great devotion to that cause for which they gave their last full measure of wit, erudition, and devotion --, so I here with strongest resolve say that those greats did not post in vain -- that this forum, under Thunderfall, was greater for their noble efforts, despite the many repetitive and boring posters -- and I pray that a forum of the cool people, by the cool people, and for the cool people, shall one day exist on CFC.

Farewell,

Gogf

For the folks who actually care:

I'm tired of the same-old-same-old debates over and over. After a couple of pages, every thread becomes about one or more of the following: religion, George W. Bush, communism vs. capitalism, or some other beaten-to-death topic. I often find myself feeling worse after browsing CFC for a while than before I started—disappointed and depressed by the flaming and ridiculous arguments. I have a lot of friends here who I hope to stay in contact with, and I wish everyone all the best. I'll pop in from time to time, but don't expect me to post frequently at all. I should be around on IRC most of the time, though.

Take care!

For the folks who actually care:

The quality of OT has declined precipitously lately. There are still some good posters, but by and large I tend to feel worse after browsing CFC—disappointed, annoyed, or just depressed. Finding the good posts in the mountain of spam and meaningless garbage ("which is worse, being waterboarded or molested?") is simply impossible most of the time. I will miss quite a few of you, and I'll probably pop in from time to time, but do not expect me to post frequently. I'll still be around on IRC, so contacting me shouldn't be incredibly tough, should the need arise.

Bye guys, it's been fun.

All the best in your endeavors Gogf.

Where has Gogf gone?” he cried. “I
shall tell you. We have killed him –

how have we done this? How were
we able to drink up the sea? Who
gave us the sponge to wipe away the
entire horizon? What did we do when
we unchained the Earth from its sun?
Whither is it moving now? Whither
are we moving now? Away from all
suns? Are we not perpetually falling?
Backward, sideward, forward, in all
directions? Is there any up or down
left? Are we not straying as through
an infinite nothing? Do we not feel
the breath of empty space? Has it not
become colder? Is it not more and
more night coming on all the time?
Must not lanterns be lit in the
morning? Do we not hear anything
yet of the noise of the gravediggers
who are burying Gogf? Do we not
smell anything yet of Gogf’s
decomposition? Gogfs, too,
decompose. Gogf is dead. Gogf
remains dead. And we have killed
him. How shall we, murderers of all
murderers, console ourselves?”

Nicely put Gogf! Fare thee well and may your newly gained free time be filled with lots of decent other activities.

See you around!
