Maybe it's the rose-tinted glasses of nostalgia kicking in but I also feel the quality of this place has slid of late (conversely however, the All Other Games forum has never been livelier, in a good way. I remember when I first joined CFC that place was a ghost town).

You'd be surprised about the variety of posters and discussions that frequent #fiftychat. BTW, the banned from fiftychat part is a referrence to a certain chatter who was very active in #fiftychat until he got perm-banned (I won't name names here), very similar to what happened with RD.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I have an important announcement.

Effective 1/11/08, I am checking out of here, and plan to pretty much leave OT. There are a few reasons:

1) I have been here a long time...several years. While its cool that I've gotten to know (or at least, as well as one can over the internets) a lot of you guys, a lot of the OT discussion has really become derivative. I know what a lot of you are going to say before you say it. We discuss a lot of the same topics all over again. Why should I read another RELIGION IS IRRATIONAL AND DUMB thread if I've read the same damn thing for 3 years?

2) My motivations for posting have changed a little bit. As a person, I've changed A LOT over these past few years, which is to be expected, seeing as I left high school, and went to college. But after my dad died and mom got sick, and I was bounced to a community college for a year...to be honest, i just lost patience for a lot of the dumb petty crap I used to think was important...or even how I used to think.

The things that have kept me at OT over the last few years were the insights from people who had more life experience than I did...people like Whomp or JH, since being a student, I don't have that many adults to ask questions to anymore. In 2005, I might have been interested in 80% of the open threads...now, its more like 15 for me.

3) I spend a LOT of my time with politics. I'm a political science major, so I'm usually in government classes all day. Then I go to work in my government job. I talk about government stuff with my friends and family. And then i'm here. Now, I'm really passionate about this kind of stuff, and I do have a lot of other interests, but I'm worried I'm getting burned out, which isn't healthy for me intellectually, or professionally.

4) I have over 7,000 posts here. Thats feels like kind of a waste to me. I think I'm going to take all that energy, and try to focus it on more productive endeavors...like writing more (since i don't get to practice that very much at OSU). If I focused the energy it takes for me to post on improving my voice by say, blogging or writing essays, I'll be using that "work downtime" a lot more productively.

Its been fun guys. I like a lot of y'all, and I've learned a lot. I'll still be around fiftychat, and have email...but for now, I think its time for my next adventure

My posts have been often misread in these parts, and sometimes it seems that people purposively do so. Some think I'm a hardcore conservative, some think I'm an anarchiest, and some may think other things. I got flamed many times here. I guess that can happen a lot, when you are far different from many on such a site. I'm not a cookie cutter liberal, conservative, or even libertarian. Everyone on CFC disagrees with me on a least a few issues, and that is fine. I have no problems with that. I just prayed people would listen a bit more. It doesn't seem to be a matter of ideology but a matter of sides.

It is as if this was in fact trench warfare. Entrench and fire. Fire. Fire. If the one side seems to be in panic, charge. They will recuperate. Fire. Fire. Fire. They charge. The other side recuperates or forgets the thread existed. I'm certainly not blameless, as I allowed my myself to be pulled a few times throughout the years. So, some dishonor I have earned. I have to admit that, or I would have no right to post this. Technically, I have no right, anyway. ;)

Even though I'm Roman Catholic and am in line on spiritual issues (more like I happen to agree), I think for myself. I joke about my faith, but I do that so others knew that joking was not a problem, but the stereotypes were. Maybe I'm not good at getting my point across online. I seem to be much better offline at convincing people it is okay to joke, but to keep things in perspective. Everything is after all about perspective. Catholic jokes aside, the world revolves around perspective. Unfortunately, I don't think many people on this site are ready for that. I cannot even say this many is most, but it is a vocal part of it.

Since, I'm in no mood to be dishonored, misinterpreted, or simply flamed, I think it would be best for everyone, my self especially, for me to leave CFC. There is absolutely minimal production here, and in some ways, we are going backwards. It is like I'm the really corrupt city in Civ3. You know the one you just conquered on that other large continent, and you main rival has his/ her forces all around it, constantly bombing and bombarding your defenses. Yeah, that one. Without an airport, I'm kind of a useless foothold here. I don't remember Civ3 that well, so I'm probably far off.

One last thing, if you feel an need to make a humorous comment on the idea of the world revolving around perspectives, you just have to find a way to contact me. :p No, I will not answer CFC private messages. Imo OT started falling in quality somewhere in the mid 2005. But it's still fun, and there is that once-in-a-while interesting thread that actually makes me question myself on an issue, and it's an entertaining way to keep in touch with what's happening in the world.

What I don't understand is why people need to make big serious statements about "leaving" OT... If you're bored with it just do something else and just post back when you feel like it, it's not like people are actually expecting you to be there on a daily basis and deliver the merchandise! Why does it have to be all or nothing? It's not like your quitting cocaine....

A lot of the people leaving are long-time, major, respected posters. So we will miss them but are at least glad to know why.

Quality falls, quality rises. It's not like there haven't been dry patches before. This is still a good place to discuss current affairs IMO. There are too many spam threads though.

All this talk of doom and gloom seems a bit pessimistic, I honestly think this is the best Off-Topic forum I have found on any games website. Civilization really seems to attract a broad spectrum of intelligent people with many different and interesting ideas on politics, science and religion.
Ok, so theres some spam to sift through on many (most/all) days, but I have yet to find a more entertaining way to get the news, and not just the news, but many varied and (sometimes) insightful opinions on the news.

I kinda feel like OT peaked in 2004, then began to slide in perhaps 2006. That may well just be due to nostalgia however, starting out finding it all new and interesting, then gradually getting tired of the endless and inevitable repetition, spam, and posturing by forum 'celebrities'. It's still a cut above most gaming forums IMHO.

Just touched down at JFK a little over two hours ago after a month away. Already annoyed at a couple things (especially with the post office....again....) and already saw authentic New Yawk again when I saw a cab driver fighting it out with two people so that all the TLC dispatchers had to go and break it up. :lol: I missed New York. My posts have been often misread in these parts, and sometimes it seems that people purposively do so. Some think I'm a hardcore conservative, some think I'm an anarchiest, and some may think other things. I got flamed many times here. I guess that can happen a lot, when you are far different from many on such a site. I'm not a cookie cutter liberal, conservative, or even libertarian. Everyone on CFC disagrees with me on a least a few issues, and that is fine. I have no problems with that. I just prayed people would listen a bit more. It doesn't seem to be a matter of ideology but a matter of sides.

It is as if this was in fact trench warfare. Entrench and fire. Fire. Fire. If the one side seems to be in panic, charge. They will recuperate. Fire. Fire. Fire. They charge. The other side recuperates or forgets the thread existed. I'm certainly not blameless, as I allowed my myself to be pulled a few times throughout the years. So, some dishonor I have earned. I have to admit that, or I would have no right to post this. Technically, I have no right, anyway. ;)

Even though I'm Roman Catholic and am in line on spiritual issues (more like I happen to agree), I think for myself. I joke about my faith, but I do that so others knew that joking was not a problem, but the stereotypes were. Maybe I'm not good at getting my point across online. I seem to be much better offline at convincing people it is okay to joke, but to keep things in perspective. Everything is after all about perspective. Catholic jokes aside, the world revolves around perspective. Unfortunately, I don't think many people on this site are ready for that. I cannot even say this many is most, but it is a vocal part of it.

Since, I'm in no mood to be dishonored, misinterpreted, or simply flamed, I think it would be best for everyone, my self especially, for me to leave CFC. There is absolutely minimal production here, and in some ways, we are going backwards. It is like I'm the really corrupt city in Civ3. You know the one you just conquered on that other large continent, and you main rival has his/ her forces all around it, constantly bombing and bombarding your defenses. Yeah, that one. Without an airport, I'm kind of a useless foothold here. I don't remember Civ3 that well, so I'm probably far off.

One last thing, if you feel an need to make a humorous comment on the idea of the world revolving around perspectives, you just have to find a way to contact me. :p No, I will not answer CFC private messages. Anyway, if you use imageshack, just click the browse button, click upload, and then paste the "direct link to image", that the site is going to give you, inside these tags here in any post on any forum.

I'm leaving. Not particularly because I bemoan what the site has become as a whole, but because I can't both hold idealizations of what it should be and change myself as a poster to match those ideals.

The very fact that I lack any motivation to improve my posts, but that I consistently act in such an irritated manner as a result of what I perceive to be surges of terrible posting.. That is what troubles me. I should learn to live up to my own expectations, but first I must lower them. To see such paragons of posting excellence, some who have left in protest, some who remain, is to keep that expectation at a level that I cannot myself hope to fulfill.

I may have left less of an impact than those who have already left. I may have been more of the defiant type, I have been known to partake in the same activities that now the majority of OT considers deplorable. For what it's worth, my four years here have taught me much, and it is a pity that I could not return nearly as much as I took.

I am just telling you guys that I am just a bi warn out of the same type of discussion that happen here, so I am taking a break from OT at leasst. I might stay at some of the other parts , mainly the multiplayer and the CvIVor games if and when they should pop up, but otherwise consider me gone. Well I hvave been here for five years or so and so much discussion of the same things does get tiring. So CYA later.

Not that my going is important, but I have a request: mods, would it be possible to delete my account? (If not, not a big deal, but it would help me break away.)

I've spent much time here and have learned a lot and had a lot of fun, but I am in over my head in work for a while and I need to purge myself of distractions, however educational and fun they may be like CFC. The thing is, I think a mod needs to delete my account to stop me from coming here since it has become so automatic and knowing that I don't have an account anymore will help me abstain. While I would love to continue learning and posting here, there just isn't enough time in a day and I need to be free of distractions for the next few months, and I will be out of the country later this year working probably without much access to internet so it's pretty much goodbye for at least a year or more. Might as well get a headstart and stop now. Thanks to everyone from whom I learned something (quite a few people). This has been a very cool group to listen in on.

I completed my Surface miners theory and detonation course at Cambrian College while workin consturction at the time Now IM being paid for a one month undergound practical onsight in one of Ontarios deepest mines!.

I'm back from skiing Beaver Creek, Park City, Alta and Snowbird. Beautiful powder in Utah and met some interesting folks like Colin Powell and Shaun White.

I'll try to get a couple pictures of us traversing Jupiter Bowl at Park City and out on the Bonneville Salt Flats.

But at any rate, welcome back!Heh. I was at a conference run by a consulting firm for the restructuring/distressed industry (lenders, hedge funds and bankruptcy attorneys). The speakers were Douglas Schoen (very interesting guy who works on polling and talks a lot on politics), Colin Powell (great sense of humor...when asked what he misses about being Sec. of State he said he only misses his airplane and the diet coke they gave him). We missed Dr. Michio Kaku (string theory guy) and Steve Forbes (no interest) because we were skiing.

For kicks they had Hootie and the Blowfish one night and a sports night with Michael Strahan and comedian Jim Gaffigan.

I have perhaps not met Collin Powell, but I am a directe relative of Jesus, and would use this opportunity to say hello and introduce myself. Amen.

Well being a direct relative of someone usually comes with proof...especially when most people believe that person has no direct relatives since they lived a far while ago, and didn't have kids..

I am not sure the term "direct relative" means anything. I know what a "direct descendant" is, but given that we are all related at least distantly, we are all relatives and thus don't need a special name for it. And of course, that means we are all somehow related to Jesus.

It means that his hoe gave birth to my verygrandmother, who again hoed enough to give birth to another girl who is my verygrandmother minus one degree of veryness. Then just take away one degree of veryness for each women or man being born by these grandpeople and then I appear. You see?
