Welcome to the new Warlords SGOTM forum. We've split this one out in the hope that there will be less confusion as we start to overlap Vanilla and Warlords SGOTMs.

SGOTM 04 - Gandhi In Space - Warlords-style

And ... Welcome to the fourth Civ4 SGOTM, and the first that is Warlords-only.

This game will re-enact the historical Civ3 SGOTM 09 challenge. It is 4000 BC. You are the Viking leader, Ragnar. You have met the Indian leader, Gandhi, and you have signed a pact in blood. The Vikings agree to teach india the art of war, and make them strong through conflict. In return India will take the Vikings to the stars.

You start the game as a neighbour of India. Following the pact you are at permanent war with Gandhi, and will remain so for the rest of the game. You are allowed no peace treaties with India. And India must win by space victory. All victory conditions are enabled except Diplomatic, but the winning team will be the one that gets India to Alpha Centauri, and does it fastest.

The Game
This Monarch difficulty game is on a Standard size, Gyathaar-special, fractal map, at Epic speed, against 7 rivals including India. All victory conditions are enabled except Diplomatic, but the laurels for this contest will be awarded to the teams who achieve the fastest Space defeat by Gandhi.

Versions
This game will be played in Warlords Version 2.08 only.

It will be played using the current version of the HoF Mod. This is version 2.08.003 for Windows, and version 2.00.002 for Mac.

If later versions of Warlords or the HoF Mod are released they cannot be used for this game.

Mac OS X players will be welcome, but they MUST play in a separate team, as we cannot provide a cross-platform version of the HoF Mod that would allow Mac and PC players to share the same saves. So there will have to be at least five or six Mac players to form a quorum.

The game will start on February 23rd.

Please post in this thread if you wish to join a team and take part in the competition. The information required to place you in a suitable team is as follows:-

Which level (noble, monarch, etc.) are you comfortable playing in a solo game?
Have you played any Civ4/Warlords GOTM games before?
Have you played any succession games or SGOTM before?
Do you have a group of players you want to play with?
Please state if you wish to play in OS X on a Mac. If so you will have to join a Mac-only team.

Starting Position
Here's the starting position - click the image below to see a larger version.

http://gotm.civfanatics.net/civ4games/images/sgotm4_start_small.jpg (http://gotm.civfanatics.net/civ4games/images/sgotm4_start_large.jpg)

Map Parameters
Playable Leader/Civ - Ragnar of The Vikings
Rivals - 7 civs including Gandhi (who is locked in war with Ragnar)
World size - Standard
Difficulty - Monarch
Landform - Fractal, cylindrical, medium sea level, temperate
Game Speed - Epic
Diplomatic Victory Disabled
All other settings are defaults

Notes

Please visit the Civ4 SGOTM reference thread (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=168439) to check out the rules and procedures to ensure that you are adequately prepared for this game.

Warlords v.2.08 is supported for this SGOTM. No other versions can be used, and you will have to stick with the same version throughout the game.

Teams will compete for up to four awards - the Gold, Silver and Bronze Laurels for the fastest finishes, and the Wooden Spoons for the lowest scoring finisher. The number of awards may be reduced, depending on the number of teams who sign up.

Awards will be given to teams who achieve Space defeats to India in the least turns.

All saved game files uploaded to the server are parsed through software that extracts and archives data about your save, including reload count for each turn set.

Spoiler information will absolutely NOT be tolerated in this thread.

Please sign up now for this interesting twist on the game of Warlords.

And as I recall, I led Team Bede to a stunning upset loss to a cultural victory by the Celts of all people in the SGOTM original. Perhaps under other auspices it will go better.

What Bede and Leif said. I hope Gandhi learns to build a boat or two this time. We actually played it out to 2050, and he still hadn't done much. I think the winning team got a lucky break due to a wonder cascade giving India the Apollo program.

Have you played any Civ4/Warlords GOTM games before? I played Civ4 GOTMs 1 & 2
Have you played any succession games or SGOTM before? A few Civ3 SGOTMs
Do you have a group of players you want to play with? I can't guarantee the time to play. Attach me to a team as a lurker with the possibility to upgrade?

Jenarie. A positive attitude, willingness to debate things and commitment to particpate are FAR more valuable to any team than just about anything else. So don't let lack of CIV expertise deter you, these boards (and hence the teams) are full of friendly people and I honestly believe no team would be unhappy having a noble level player join them.

All the Civ3 SGOTM threads are still available, it's just that (some of) SGOTM 9 is older than the 100 days default display for that forum. I'd love to play on the Mac team ... but I'm on a Macbook and my understanding is that the latest warlords patch from Aspyr breaks Civ for my (admittably unsupported) integrated intel graphics chip. A pity since I run vanilla just fine.

If they fix that in time I'll play. Otherwise I think I'm out of luck again.

"Comfortable" in the first question is quite open to interpretation. I have found that I am quite "comfortable" playing deity ... once I resign myself to the fact that I am not going to win it  But I am not going to "win comfortably" on that level. :mischief:

Go to the Civ3 SGOTM Results page and select SGOTM 9. Then go down to the lower part of the screen and select "List of saves" in the Display Format menu. Click Refresh to see a list of all the team saves. Make sure the 'Start File List At:' menu is set to start at 4000 BC. If not then set it to 4000 BC and click Refresh again. You should see an array of scores, representing all the team saves submitted for the game. The scores are links to the saves. The 4000 BC saves are just links named 'Start'.

This same format option is also available in the Civ4 results pages.

To all teams:

I cannot sign up teams larger than ten players for purely practical reasons.

However, regardless of that limit, I shall resist attempts to build teams larger than eight active players. I think teams bigger than this are likely to suffer excessive delays between turn sets for individual players, and some players may only ever get one turn set.

Silly question from a beginner in Warlords: do you need a "dual install" to run warlords and vanilla, or is it like mods ?

AlanH
Feb 10, 2007, 06:45 AM
When you install Warlords you get a separate executable, and separate data folders for your Warlords saves and mods, and the existing Vanilla data, mods and executable are unaffected. So it's rather like a Cv3/PtW/Conquests arrangement.

You play Vanilla or Warlords by launching the appropriate executable with the correct CD/DVD in the drive, I guess on Windows that will typically be via a desktop shortcut.

Do you forsee a time when teams can have people who play on both macs and PCs?
Since we are now committed to using the HoF Mod for all Civ4-based GOTM competitions, and the HoF Mod is currently incompatible across the two platforms, it would need one of two significant developments:

It could happen if Firaxis and Aspyr (the Mac version publishers) ever get their act together to adapt the game software to support cross-platform SDK-based mods. That isn't beyond the wit of competent programmers, but I'm not sure I can see a commercial justification for them to do it, apart from the good will it would generate in the Mac gaming community.

The only other option I can see is to find a way to make the full HoF Mod functionality work without a custom DLL. I have given that a little thought, and have some ideas that may work, but I haven't even had enough time to build a proof of concept to see what's feasible.

Well done.

I don't really see the point of an "unallocated lurker" .. isn't that what all the spectators are? So I don't think you'd have made it onto a team list unless you had nominated one specific team to which you have had a previous affiliation.

1. Which level (noble, monarch, etc.) are you comfortable playing in a solo game?

2. Have you played any Civ4/Warlords GOTM games before?
- No, I am a GOTM newbie, so will need to be told what to do.

3. Have you played any succession games or SGOTM before?
- No

4. Do you have a group of players you want to play with?
- No, I'll go with whoever will put up with me.

5. Please state if you wish to play in OS X on a Mac. If so you will have to join a Mac-only team.
- PC

I see that this will start on 23 Feb. I will be away on holiday from 23 Feb to 2 March but hopefully this would not be a problem as I would just miss the opening discussions and the first few moves.

As this would be my first time in a SGOTM, I would probably need to be handheld through some of the basics, like what patches and mods I need to activate. I've tried to read all the rule etc, but there is a lot of information to take in and so I probably haven't absorbed it all.

How do I know if I've been put in a team? Is it in this thread or somewhere else?

Sorry to hear that.

It's very much a lottery, and some teams created from unallocated players have been very successful. This time it does look as though we have several under-staffed teams that can absorb single players. In previous games the established teams have been fully staffed, leaving few gaps to fill.

Please read post #127. You can also see the sequence previous game have taken by looking at old Sign-up threads. Most importantly, please do as I asked at the start of this thread, and read the Civ4 SGOTM Reference Thread where the whole process is mapped out and the overall Rules are defined.

Specifically for this game:

24 hours ago I gave 48 hours for smaller teams to get more of their previous players to sign up, or to form mergers. In another 24 hours I shall assign remaining unassigned players to the remaining smaller teams. At that point you will know which team you are assigned to, subject to any last-minute errors, appeals and complaints. I shall then open the Team Threads for private team discussions, and the Maintenance Thread for ongoing public administration of the game. You will check in to your appointed Team Thread, where you will hopefully get to know your team-mates, and the game details and internal team administration will be discussed.

The individual starting save for each team will become available on the SGOTM Progress and Results page as the clock strikes twelve in GOTM-server-land to herald in the 23rd February.

This scenario looks fascinating, would love to participate. Unfortunately, RL has been severely limiting my CIV playing time, so I think I need to stick to a dedicated lurker role.

1) Emperor
2) Yes
3) Yes
4) Looking for a lurker role, have posted a note to my old teammates (Geezers) to see if I can join them.

I think the unallocated players should go on teams already sorted. I am currently playing on the flying vanillas and there are a put together team. We are struggling to get any progress have a high skip rate/very few posting and are gonig very slowly (i.e. last) by 300 yrs but not including the last 2 teams over 550 years. @ g_storrow: We only have 4 Gypsy Kings moving from vanilla to Warlords for this one, so we would be happy to have you (and Immaculate, if he signs up ... I have not seen his sign-up post yet) with us. I can guarantee you fast play, few skips and deep discussions if you should agree to join us, as I think we have been the fastest playing vanilla team in SGOTM 3. Have you checked your PM box?

Of course he is welcome to join us as a dedicated lurker or even as a member who plays a set if he finds the time.

AlanH,

Team One and Short Straw have merged and will now answer the new name: "Team One Short Straw".

I'll give you the working name of One Short Straw for now. Please get it resolved in the next 24 hours as I have to prepare the team saves before we begin. Once it's burned into the starting save you can't change it.

[EDIT] Just seen TDK's post. 'One Short Straw' it will be.

If it not too late, I'd like to sign-up as well...

1- Monarch
2- yes
3- yes
4- Team VQ

If it is too late, I will assume a dedicated lurker position, or even the occasional fill-in :)

@Frederiksberg and Drool: team CDZ stands for Civ Duel Zone, a PVP site where the other members of the team hang out. I invite you to go have a look: pre-game discussion @ CDZ (http://civ3duelzone.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4112).

If you would rather, we can hold a spoiler here with everyone, but it's hard enough to shake up a CDZ team together that it's custom to have the thread over there.

Beorn we seem to have been using the spoiler over here for this game and especially with non cdz'ers we should make an effort to use this one, its only a few more clicks to get here :)

Hi AlanH.

Please add The_Hawk to the Geezers as he wanted to be a lurker with us.

Thanks.

I read the rules but I may have missed this somewhere. I don't understand the idea of official lurkers.

If someone isn't playing, he can read as many team threads as he likes, correct? Is there a rule somewhere that states no one can post unless they are an official lurker and thus only reading one thread? I have read a couple team threads for SGOTM3 but never posted since I wasn't sure if I were allowed. I'm guessing once a non-player has poked into more then one thread he shouldn't post but does someone need to be an official lurker to post? Or does it mean something else?

I feel like a little kid on Christmas Eve. I'm really excited about the new game starting. :)

Official lurker is a non-playing character of the team. It is a way to get more involved, but it prevents you from poking around.

This should be in the readme somewhere, I have seen that question way too often for Mr H's sake ;)

An official lurker as I understand it gives them the right to post and comment on the game for just that one thread.

Any thread can be read by pure lurkers, but an official lurker agrees to look at only one thread.

An official lurker will usually be a player who's had "history" with the team in question in the past - usually in previous SGOTMs - but who for whatever reasons doesn't have time to actively participate.

I'd like to play, but if teams are set I'll pitch my name in here as a possible alternate. I won't read any threads, etc. and hop in someone needs an alt.

1) Prince / Monarch player.
2) Yes
3) Yes
4) No Pref
5) Windows XP only.

My personal preference would be to have players and spectators ... period.

"Official Lurkers" appeared when players wanted to be involved in team discussions within the threads for teams they had played in previously, but were not going to play turn sets because of time constraints or whatever.

As far as I am concerned they are team players who don't submit turn sets, and who I don't count when I'm ensuring that teams have enough playing members. Since the genii is out of the bottle I shall continue to allow them in moderation, but I shall avoid stretching the point to defining lurkers who have no previous relationship with the teams they want to be attached to.

I applaud your suggestion. It will be difficult to add players to your team as long as you insist on playing as an 'away team'.

It's zero more clicks to get here if you set your CFC team thread as a favourite.

As a "lurker", I think that is exactly right.

The Maintenance Thread for this game is now open for general, non-spoiler discussion and announcements for this game.

Your Team Threads are also all open, and the SGOTM Progress page is primed to provide your individual team start files in approximately 4.5 hours from now.

Please ensure that you download only your own team file when you begin. Each start file is individually tagged with the team name.

just noticed this post- the original reason for not posting on cfc was because the majority of the players couldnt access cfc from work (where they did all their posting) thus not being able to access the thread- this has changed with player change and new blood now of course :)

Yes, I saw that explanation once before, and I wondered why CFC barring by employers would be a bigger problem for CDZ players than for the rest of the SGOTM community.

BCLG100

pre this SGOTM cdz took the game at a lot more laid back pace. However if more posting and therefore discussion was done whilst they were at work then it is best that the thread was at a place where they could access- this worked ok with the first 2 SGOTM's because we copy pasted all the posts over. Now we've just decided it was easier to do it here :)

Or why we should be changing our rules to help people get around restrictions that their employers have deliberately imposed.

In what way what so ever we're any rules needed to be changed? there is no rule which i can find that discussion must occur in the discussion thread- discussion itself is optional and cdz is certainly not the only team that did it.

I don't think its a matter of rules and regulations. I think that the essence of CFC is people posting their tricks and tips so we all learn from each other so we can all become better players. Hopefuly at times we entertain each other as well. Its difficult to do that if people are posting their discussions off site.

BCLG100
Mar 05, 2007, 09:33 AM
Not so much because there was a program created so that every post we did make offsite was copied and posted here- there were about 20-30 posts per post just i dont think many read them.
