You might try asking this in the History Forum. It's one forum bellow this one.

Or a mod might move it.

Chinese gangs today, known as triads or secret societies are descended from the religious, secretive, anti-governmental politico-social organisations during imperial times. Examples are like the famous (in HK costumed dramas) White Lotus Society and the Taipings.

The most successful of all gradually evolved into the power that became the Ming dynasty - the Red Turbans during the late Yuan.

These organisations raised their own fighting forces, usually fighting against a weak, corrupt central imperial govt. So there you have it. :ack:

I should think the infamous riots between the Blues and the Greens in Byzantium would be up there. The Blues and the Greens were "demes", strange organisations that were part sports fan clubs, part political parties, and part street gangs. They were named after the colours of the charioteers they supported in the main stadium at Constantinople. The most famous riot took place in 532; the emperor Justinian I wanted to flee the city, but his wife persuaded him to stay. He sent in the troops and some 30,000 people died. The cathedral of Hagia Sophia was destroyed in the rioting, which is why Justinian went on to build the famous basilica that replaced it and still stands in Istanbul.

Take your pick of any riot in Northern Ireland over the last 30 years, some of the football riots in the 80's in the UK were massive too. You should have an option for largest riots between two gangs and the police at the same time like we do in my crazy land.

There's allsorts. Northern Ireland was my first instinct, or maybe Brighton Beach? Not really a gang though as it was unorganised. I don't really see firms as gangs either as they have definite codes of conduct regarding how much you can hurt someone (at leats everyone except the Leeds United firm do).

The 1969 Football War is an obvious candidate, but the question arises: when does something cease to be a gang fight and begin to be a war?

When politicians stop condemning it, I suppose.

Ooh! satire!
