Pangaea

normally do random in my own games, but I think Pangaea makes things a bit more interesting... for the DG

Fractal.

Unpredictable, but always playable.

Pangaea (for war and peace).

i chose continents, for the same reason explained here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=5079550&postcount=45)

Pangaea

Why? Because Pangaea will give us more contacts early, giving us more to talk about, keeping the game interesting. It also avoids getting stuck on a lousy continent with warmongering neighbours while Mansa, Washington and Gandhi are on another island teching away.

i understand duthfire, but then again, isn't it what is fun about civ 4, the adaptation of the world given to you... if really we are stuck on a continent with warmongering neighbours while Mansa, Washington and Gandhi are on another island teching away, shouldnt we adapt and try to win since this situation is plausible... i mean MUST we win the game by putting every detail safely in front of us, or fight and try to adapt with what world is upon us... i think we are good enough at this game to adapt... anyway, we could also ask the warmongering neighbours to go with us and wage war against the teching civs.

Well, I favour Terra maps... Which are like pangaeas but with extra land to discover later on

Voted fractal so we don't know what to expect.

Shuffle, I would like plenty of surprises.

I voted continents, because it's the most like Earth of the standard ones. Would like to play the tectonics map script, but since we're sticking to standard options...

Actually, Terra is the most Earth-like.

Actually, Terra is the most Earth-like.
Disagreed. Even if you think it historically represents Earth your wrong. The American Civilizations such as the Mayans, Incans and Aztecs were all non-barbaric empires. They weren't even terribly technologically backwards. Disease and the Europeans playing divide and conquer is what wiped them out.

First off I'm not wrong, it's just that are opinions differ.

Secondly, its not my opinion, but is based off of Sirian's Map Scripts Guide (http://www.civfanatics.com/civ4/reference/map_scripts_guide.php). Under the heading Terra (http://www.civfanatics.com/civ4/reference/map_scripts_guide.php#terra) you'll find this:

Simulates Earth: Randomly generated landmasses that roughly simulate Earth's continents!

Recall that Sirian programmed most of Civ4's random map scripts as he states here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=134226).

The American Civilizations such as the Mayans, Incans and Aztecs were all non-barbaric empires. They weren't even terribly technologically backwards. Disease and the Europeans playing divide and conquer is what wiped them out.

I'm a little confused at how the above relates to map types.

My point was how does a continents map, that starts everyone off on the same continent and places a bunch of barbs on another continent, make it more of an earth map than continents.

Edit: Sorry if I came off a bit mean.

Terra more closely simulates Earth from a colonial stand point, ie. eventually you encounter a "untouched" continent to discover, colonize, and develop.

I agree comparisons of American civilizations to the "Barbarians" you'd encounter in the Civ IV continent in Terra is unfair (especially concidering several are included as playable civs). However, I don't think that was anyone's intention was to.

Continents, or if not then Pangea please.

So the poll is closed... Without a clear majority.... What do we do now?

dutchfire

I wouldn't mind a repoll in this case.

For example only using Fractal and Continents.

ordinaryguy

IMHO, pick continents. Nearly half of the respondents picked it.

dutchfire
Feb 14, 2007, 08:37 AM
That's true, this poll is right in the shadow zone between repolling or not. I wouldn't mind repolling it, but I wouldn't mind not repolling it either.

DaveShack
Feb 14, 2007, 12:16 PM
The top result has twice as many as the next one, so I wouldn't think a repoll would be necessary. If someone wants to repoll, there is nothing to say it shouldn't be done.

Methos

Why is anyone even bringing up the possibility of a repoll on this one? The winner has twice the number of votes as the one that came in second. If your talking it didn't receive a majority (as in over 50%), come on, how likely is that going to happen on a poll with five options (six if you count abstain). The fact that one option got over 40% of the votes with this many options is amazing to me and therefore should be declared the winner. There's two big of a gap between first and second place and too many options to consider a majority as 50%.

Just for clarification I'm not promoting my vote, as the one I voted for lost out.

DaveShack
Feb 14, 2007, 02:10 PM
Again, not saying there should be a repoll, just that the subset of rules that we have so far would allow it. :)

BTW my preference wasn't selected either.

dutchfire
Feb 15, 2007, 09:39 AM
Well, one could argue that, as terra and pangaea are similar too each other, and shuffle and fractal are similar to eachother, the difference between these similar groups of options isn't that big.

Methos
Feb 15, 2007, 09:43 AM
So once we have a definitive number of civs than we need to poll the number of continents. I'd suggest starting out with a simple one, like:

How are we going to pick the number of continents?
1. Use the in-game Randomizer
2. To be defined by the citizens (in a later poll)
3. Abstain

DaveShack
Feb 15, 2007, 09:48 AM
Does the Continents map script allow the number to be selected? I thought that was the Custom Continents script.

 Uh-oh, we have another problem than, as which did we vote on, custom or not!?! Either way, we're going to have to do another poll.

No, the poll specifically says which map script. The values suggested by citizens were included. :mischief:

Nothing to keep another poll from happening, but we don't have to do another. :D

i say we just do a quick poll for either custom or non custom continents.. no harm in it

No harm if that poll plus possibly a discussion and additional poll finish before the end of the month.
