Windows Vista 'plays havoc with games'
By David Derbyshire, Consumer Affairs Editor
The much-hyped new version of Microsoft Windows is playing havoc with computer games, industry experts have warned.
They say the Vista operating system, launched to an enormous fanfare last week, is causing some games to freeze, and other to become unplayable.
While most of the problems are expected to be fixed over the next few weeks, serious gamers are being advised to hold fire before upgrading their computers.
advertisementA spokesman for Microsoft denied that there were any serious problems with Windows Vista. "These are initial niggles and it will be a couple of weeks before the patches kick in," he said.
Prices in Britain range from around £100 for the cheapest version to £249.
Makes me think twice before upgrading.
Dawgphood001 Feb 08, 2007, 12:47 AM There seems to be a new trend in the Computer Industry nowadays:
To release expensive pieces o' crap that dont' work (I.E. PS3, Windows Vista, Xbox 360).
CivGeneral Feb 08, 2007, 12:55 AM HA!!! Sticking with XP and Kubuntu!
Kraznaya Feb 08, 2007, 12:55 AM 360 has done okay for itself; PS3 was a much more collosal bust.
As for Vista, I think everyone expected such a problem; occurs frequently during the launches of new OSes.

Why does this strategy work ??

Because that's life.
We should really just sticky this thread so it's ready when the next incarnation of Windows rolls around, to save the trouble of having to clone all the arguments again.

It's just education. If everyone uses GNU/Linux, Microsoft will shut down eventually. No one asks for abandoning Windows at once, there are many temporary solutions, like dual-boot, virtualization, etc...

If *nix could do the stuff I needed it to do, I'd gladly use it. But it don't, so neither do I. ;)

I'm sure you do web surfing. ;) Linux does that. Also email, office stuff, etc... Linux does all of that, and more. If you stick to Windows, Microsoft will continue to sell you their stuff. Don't complain.
Pentium Feb 08, 2007, 03:55 PM @Speedo: What exactly do you need your OS to do? There really aren't many things you can't do in Linux, and if you really need Windows for just one thing there's always dual-boot.

A lot of people still use 98, and I would bet money 95 is still in use.

But not those who want support or the ability to network.

Never said they were perfect. ;)
PrinceScamp Feb 09, 2007, 12:24 AM At my school we have Windows XP in the journalism room, the office for the secrertaries, and of course the vice principles and principle have laptops with XP. The library still uses 98, but it doesn't need to upgrade. Way cheaper not to and 98 is just fine for them actualy. Then there's the individual comptuers in the class rooms for the teachers to use to check/achange/add marks for assignemnts and do the attendence on, these run Windows 95.
EDIT: Besides the price, has the PS3 had other problems?
CivGeneral Feb 09, 2007, 11:36 AM I remembered the computer lab in my old High School had Windows 2k ;)

Sure, in 3 or 4 years. But by then we'll have something better than Vista to upgrade to. :)

Nope. In 4 years we'll be discussing how badly will MS screw up their newly annoucned next OS.
In 3 or 4 years Vista should (hopefully) be fixed up enough.

Of course, it's a neverending cycle. Most of the arguments I've heard against Vista are almost exact repeats of arguments used to vocally denouce XP at its release.

That could lead to the argument "They havnt fixed anything!".

Ummm... How about being 2 years late

When I first installed Fedora 6 the Nvidia drivers didn't work and I had to use VGA graphics for a while. The fix involved installing a 3rd party repository only that repository required a different repository to be installed first. To install those drivers I had to logout of X and install them via command line. It was poorly documented and every source had different directions and used different commands, most of which didn't work. Needless to say I was not able to run any Windows games at the time.

The launch titles aren't very good. The only games I want for PS3 are PS2 games.

because, just as back then, some of these argument are entirely valid :mischief:
it's kinda funny that many of the peoply jumping at vista are those that are supposedly happy with XP. But if XP does the job you want it to do, why switch? and if it doesn't, why give MS yet another chance instead of trying an alternative (ok, I admit some (depending on what you need) have tried alternatives and found them lacking, fair enough).
Personally, I don't think XP not bad, so I'll stick to it as long as possible for gameing, for all the other stuff, I'm totally happy with Linux, maybe by the time XP will be obsolete, Linux will have amended that glitch too :) (though I'm a bit pessimistic in this regard)

If there's something you don't like about Linux, you can probably try another distro. I remember Kubuntu not recognizing my friend's video card. Thanks to Padma's recommendations I told him that PCLinuxOS might be nice so he tried it and it works.
