View Full Version : Ok guys... how do you find a time to play games?
Melhisedek Feb 09, 2007, 05:20 AM I've been playing games since I was 11-12 years old. Back than I would take every penny I had and spend it on arcades. Had/Have most of the bigger consoles/handleds released since NES days. But back than I had so much more time to play and had "will" to do it as well. These days only "will" I posses is to make me buy new games/consoles, but I rarely finish, rarely even start a new game these days http://www.octopusoverlords.com/phpBB2/images/smiles/icon_sad.gif
I'm much older now, 29 and my days and daily scheme is as different as it gets since my teens and school and such. I'm not married and am single but still I find little to no time to play except when I'm on a sick leave.
I've tried playing like 30-60 mins a day which gets into once a week after a few days, but I like strategy and RPG games and leaving them for prolonged periods of time, makes me forget everything and makes me wanna start another game or play some more WoW :/
How do you guys do it?
Following games are SOME of the ones I haven't even started yet but I want/plan to for so long time now:
PC:
Civ4 Warlords
Prey
FEAR
HL:EP1
Heroes of M&M 5
Company of Heroes
360:
Far Cry
Call of Duty 3
GRAW
Splinter Cell 4
GoW
PS2:
FF XII
pretty much all the big games in last 2 years
including
God of War
DS:
6-7 games here I didn't even touch
you get the point http://www.octopusoverlords.com/phpBB2/images/smiles/icon_sad.gif
I always try and start some RPG as I enjoy them the most but as soon as I feel I need to level up to progress I lose the interest to play. At the same time I remember the FF7 days when I leveled all the chars to 100 TWICE...
Man it sucks getting old http://www.octopusoverlords.com/phpBB2/images/smiles/icon_sad.gif
Synsensa Feb 09, 2007, 06:46 AM For PC, get Half Life 2, it's better than one. And if you like HL2, get HL2 : Ep1.
EDIT: By just HL : Ep1, you do mean the first half life?
Knight-Dragon Feb 09, 2007, 06:48 AM I have no life, so I have lots of free time to play games. Just don't have the energy to actually finish them though. :ack:
RFHolloway Feb 09, 2007, 06:51 AM I commute into London (2hrs each way) - and play on a laptop.
Heretic_Cata Feb 09, 2007, 03:03 PM I don't have time to play. :( Which is why i don't play much. 30-60 minutes per day - but in some weeks i don't play at all.
But now that the exams are over i might have more time. :)
I commute into London (2hrs each way) - and play on a laptop.
That sounds almost idilic. :)
Sir_Lancelot Feb 09, 2007, 03:15 PM I have not touched a game the last 3-4 months. :(
I don't have the energy nor the time to do it. :ack:
Rheinmetall Feb 09, 2007, 03:48 PM It's very hard to find time for RPG's and strategy games. They're almost exclusively weekend activity. Weekdays I must stick to simpler shorter games. My situation is quite similar to OP's. If I can't play RPG's daily I lose touch and interest in them.
Maniacal Feb 09, 2007, 11:22 PM I have like 5-6 hours a night far gomes, unelss I have homework or once my parents start maknig me do chores again. Or if i have acting or improv practice.
Or if the power goes out >_<.
EDIT: Oh, and pretty much all day on the weekends. Althoguh it's only every second week, I no longer play games at my dads as I have a lousy crappy Dell there, at my mom's is the good comptuer. My pride and joy.
Xanikk999 Feb 10, 2007, 02:20 PM I make time for it out of time i should be doing something else. :D
CivGeneral Feb 10, 2007, 03:01 PM I run on a PC Windows platform when playing games. I oftenly play many of my games in windowed mode so that I can easely switch back and forth from the game to my work.
Chukchi Husky Feb 10, 2007, 05:10 PM I could spend all my time playing games. I don't do anything else with it.
Swedishguy Feb 11, 2007, 01:17 PM Weekends are the solution. But games aren't so popular as they used to be for me.
Shawnosaurus Feb 11, 2007, 01:18 PM I think I see where you're getting swamped. Let's look at your games list :)
PC:
Civ4 Warlords :goodjob:
Prey - don't bother. It offers nothing outstanding to the genre and you have HL2 which is best of genre on PC.
FEAR - don't bother. It offers nothing outstanding to the genre and you have HL2 which is best of genre on PC. Almost has AI in its favor, but not good enough elsewhere to matter.
HL2:EP1 - Best of FPS on PC. Although if you didn't adore HL2 don't bother since this episode is more of the same.
Heroes of M&M 5 - Good choice as it gives you another genre on PC and it's well done.
Company of Heroes - Nothing special. You've got CoD3 on 360 so you'll be full up on war. If anything I recommend CoD games on PC over 360.
360:
Far Cry - A bit old now and there's a new one on the way.
Call of Duty 3 - CoD on PC is better if your PC is up to task.
GRAW - Don't bother as a sequel is en route soon.
Splinter Cell 4 - I bet you don't play long enough to get good.
GoW - A current day classic, play it if even so you can say you did.
PS2: - This is some old ghetto console? Give it to a 9 year old kid and play pc, 360, wii and ds games. It's 2007 ;)
DS: - I love the nintendo's (wii and ds) for the sheer variety and good times. There's a million games you can pick up and be having fun in seconds. I can't help ya here :)
So many games, so little time :crazyeye:
FriendlyFire Feb 15, 2007, 02:36 AM Holy Cow !!!!
Look at all those systems and games that you have.
yeah games hold my interests for shorter and shorter time. I dont have the time either. So pick the games I play very carefully.
(I also dont watch TV bar the news)
TheBladeRoden Feb 15, 2007, 02:38 AM there's a lot more time to play games when school is out and all the TV shows are reruns
Technocactus Feb 15, 2007, 06:06 AM If you want to play games as crap as FEAR, it's no wonder you don't have enough time.
Swedishguy Feb 15, 2007, 06:59 AM It's soon sports holiday, I'll have plenty of time to play when.

youl have to forgive him, he was hi as **** when he said this, first off, FEAR is a great first person shooter, well worth your time, second company of heroes is an RTS, COD is a first person shooter, not only are they two completely different genres, Company of heroes is the jesus weve been waiting for in terms of RTSs, its the first great opn to come out in a very long time.
Perfection Feb 17, 2007, 04:34 AM Fail at life!
Gr3yL3gion Feb 17, 2007, 08:53 AM Don't sleep for a few days.
FriendlyFire Feb 18, 2007, 06:04 PM but I like strategy and RPG games and leaving them for prolonged periods of time, makes me forget everything and makes me wanna start another game or play some more WoW :/
How do you guys do it?

Agreed, theres better MMORPGs anyway.
kittenOFchaos Feb 21, 2007, 11:31 AM A disregard for clubbing, sociability outside of work, deprevation of sleep, not enough exercise and cutting back on the work I do outside of work.
Even still, not enough hours in the day for gaming! :D
earthguido Feb 21, 2007, 12:17 PM Lunch breaks, stay in the office late, at night when wife & daughter sleep, sometimes when stars are aligned and time is favorable in the weekends when my daughter sleeps a nap and my wife is busy...
Pathetic...
dgkurt Feb 21, 2007, 06:08 PM Don't sleep for a few days.
I agree with that. When I get hooked with some civ type game, I MUST play 1 or 2 hours a day. So I sleep less, and cut off social activities. Anyway, I can do this only once a month. The times when I could sleep 3 to 4 hours a day are far gone  . Usually I do some gaming (up to 1 hour) on weekends.
ummmm........ Feb 22, 2007, 01:03 AM I take one day a week where I don't do anything but what I want to do. That means not only no work/school/whatever, but no running errands, no returning non-social calls, no doing the laundry, etc.
It makes the other six days of the week much more hectic, but I've found it's worth it.
Now, having said that, I still rarely play games anymore. Part of that is because my computer is very old (AthlonXP 1800+, ATI Radeon 9600, 512MB RAM) and won't play the cool new stuff (so I still haven't played HL2 either), but it's also because I just don't have the same interest level in it that I used to.
I have recently started up a new game of the first Half-Life, and it's still a blast. But when I have free time, I'm much more likely to watch a movie than play a game these days . . .
Knight-Dragon Feb 22, 2007, 02:43 AM Agreed, theres better MMORPGs anyway.For example?
I'm thinking of playing one one of these days...

Well its kind of old but, i always liked FFXI. Its a completely different game though, not as easy. You cant solo as much but i like it better that way.
Its much harder and rewarding then WoW and the community is more mature.
ummmm........ Feb 23, 2007, 11:52 PM For example?

There's a really cool MMORPG called Urban Dead. It's extremely low tech, but it's free, and only takes about ten minutes of your day. You should give it a shot.
Knight-Dragon Feb 24, 2007, 01:07 AM As you know very well, I already have 9 or 10 accounts in that game and have donated some money as well. :p
In any case, I have just bought WoW vanilla... :scared:
FriendlyFire Feb 24, 2007, 01:36 AM I have just bought WoW vanilla... :scared:
RUN RUN for your LIFE
ok you've been warned
ummmm........ Feb 24, 2007, 01:53 AM As you know very well, . . .
That's why I didn't think the :mischief: smiley was necessary . . .
