I was playing a standard random map, continents, wet, latest year. I was the Greeks, and sharing my peninsula were the Romans. We didn't like each other very much, and I owned about 5x more land than him becuz i expanded faster. We mananged to build some cities where my culture was low and there were openings in my control. I sensed somethingbad, so I prepared to strike first. I was hlaf-way through the middle ages, and my armies were mostly made of knights and pikemen. I had about4,000 gold to his 40.

I was way too over-confident that my huge empire would crush his tiny one. I attacked without warning, capturing some of his cities ringing my empre. I failed in the north to drive him out of his city, and it resulted in a staemate. In the south, my forces were annilated. We counter-attacked and captured one of my cities. I called a peace treaty and he agreed. I rebuilt my arm with more knights and pikemen, but this time i had some troops go right through the mountains. Sure enough, when I atacked, he had arely any troops in the mountins. I blitzkreged across the plains in his empire, quickly capturing every city. Now he only had 5 cites left, and I couldn't get to 4 of them. I decided to ask for peace. He agreed to half his gold, 20 per turn, all his luxaries, 1 city(I didn't want more), all his maps, all his tecnologies, and everything else except for his 4 cities.[party]

Hi!

I think I've gone through that story a few times myself, hehehe.

My largest-scale war to date was also, strangely, the easiest to wage... The Russians unfortunately had all their rubber supplies close to my borders. Needless to say when they attacked, I replied with a lightning, though costly, strike at that area. I then dug in and let them expend all their tanks and mechanized infantry against my fortified units. With them unable to build more because of the rubber shortage, it was a simple task to take over the whole continent using tanks (which steamrolled over the few riflemen they were able to muster using remaining resources)...

This strategic aspect to the game was absent in Civilization II and I must say I *love* it! Finally, the goal of the game is not simply to plow through your enemy's defenses like an elephant, with little or no regard for strategy!
