In the Civ4 Democracy Game II (http://forums.civfanatics.com/forumdisplay.php?f=240) a question has come up that I was hoping someone here could help us with. Can an unmodded Windows vanilla Civ4 saved game be put on a Mac computer and be both viewed and played? In other words, to put it more simply, can a Mac player take a Windows Civ4 game and play it on the Mac computer.

Thanks for any help and state if I/we need to be more specific in our question.

@AlanH: For clarification, can a Mac player take a Windows HoF mod save and view and play it on a Mac computer? We're pretty sure this question is a 'No'.

yes for unmodded saves, no for HOF saves (a windows player could in theory view mac HOF save if the saves are unlocked, but not other way)

yeah, the base of the save game (the part after the . ) is the same in both mac and windows.

CAREFUL: it could work with a mod, but both parties would need it and it would have to run with mac.

but if it is an unmodded saved game then yeah it'll work.

I'll link this statement (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=5099070&postcount=791) made by Superslug in the HoF Forums, and quote it here:

I didn't realize that Mac players couldn't submit. Does it have something to do in the difference of the saves?

It's more due to the differences in the Windows/Mac Operating Systems. Cross-platform compatibility is pretty much impossible for the mod.

... and I'll link my clarification. It's only "impossible" because Firaxis/Aspyr have not done the work necessary. Nothing in Mac OS stops them from doing it.

Just to reassure you, Methos, I am involved with a PBEM involving a coworker. I play on a MacBook, he on his PC. Whenever I'm at his office, I'll play a couple turns. Later that night, I'll play the next turns on my MacBook. There has never been a problem crossing from one platform to the other. We are playing Vanilla 1.61 :)

Yes, one person sets up a LAN game, and then the other joins.

It does work, though both parties need to be on the same LAN segment and neither can be running a firewall that would block the connection (which is the same as Mac vs. Mac or Windows vs. Windows).

Technicaly, it is possible to run a save fire from a Civ4 game that is from a Modern Windows OS (Vista/XP/2000) to a Civ4 that is ported to Mac OS X so long as it is unmodded.

Even playing across a network between two different OSes is possible (I know because I have done the same with a Virtual Machine running on Linux and having it network to my Windows XP host)
