Back in November Stormrage won my unit lottery and I just now finished it after putting it off for months.
It wasn't as 'painful' to make as I thought it was going to be. The hardest parts were the run and then afterwards all the different palletes I needed to make. Just 1 would not be enough. I including 2 deaths and 2 defaults, depending on how detailed you want it. This is the largest unit I've made at over 4 megs zipped, and with no sounds.
I am really really really happy with how this turned out.
What the L5 Riesig Battlewalker loses in forward velocity, it makes up for ten-fold in offensive potency and scope. The bipedal configuration of this next generation assault unit enables it to traverse almost all terrains while its elevated vantage point, providing long distance viewing and multi-directional targeting, gives it a significant advantage over low height, horizontally-based agents. Manned by two occupants, the Battlewalker is outfitted with an array of weaponry, including two rapid-fire cannons and a dual-arena, infrared homing missile system. The Battlewalker armor is multi-layered, combining steel and reinforced plastic laminates with kinetic energy and heat absorbing materials. An automatic Active Defense System assists in resisting off air and ground fired rocket attacks.
If you'd like to know how big it is... according to my tank scale, it's 2.3m or 10.5 feet long. I didn't measure how tall yet. I think that sounds about right for what it is in the game BF2142. I did not scale it from the start, I just eyeballed what looked like a perfect size, not too big, not too small.

aaglo Feb 20, 2007, 01:08 AM That death is amazing  - Great walker :)
NavyDawg Feb 20, 2007, 01:38 AM Wow, great model and anims. The drop and death are something special. I also like the run, looks like he's struttin'.
BadKharma Feb 20, 2007, 01:56 AM Well I can see why you are happy with it! That death is absolutely spectacular. I may have to break down and actually add mechs now to a modded epic game.
Keroro Feb 20, 2007, 03:50 AM The animations are spectacularly good, especially the death. Love the unit. :goodjob: It's so much more realistic than gundams and the other mechs that are available - it would actually work as an addition to the epic game.
I know that mechanical units don't often win unit of the month, but I can't imagine that there would be anything I would rather vote for this month. At least, not now that the beaver worker is done and dusted. ;)
LizardmenRule! Feb 20, 2007, 05:00 AM One of the best deaths i have ever seen! And he has got a strut! Lighting is wonderful... i could go on and on :)
Awesome work Wyrm
utahjazz7 Feb 20, 2007, 06:53 AM Yeah, you did a really wonderful job on this unit. Nice work.
Sword_Of_Geddon Feb 20, 2007, 07:37 AM The animations are spectacularly good, especially the death. Love the unit. :goodjob: It's so much more realistic than gundams and the other mechs that are available - it would actually work as an addition to the epic game.

Bhitta's Mechwalker is still my favorite. This one is incredible though
Stormrage Feb 20, 2007, 09:46 AM Thanks Wyrm! It turned out great!
Orthanc Feb 20, 2007, 11:09 AM Just to extend this further, death animation is amazing, like really, a most-original-death-ever contest would be hard pressed putting that in second. Jump jets are a wonderful addition, didn't see those coming at all. Almost get the sense it's whistling some army tune while it's walking, it's got that fun little bounce to it.
Yeah, seriously, this is great, you should be happy with it, makes me anxious to get back into the Mech industry, but also glad I won't be going up against this thing in this month's competitions.
Sometimes I really wonder if any other mod community has anything nearly as impressive as Civ3 Creation and Customization.:D
Hikaro Takayama Feb 20, 2007, 11:13 AM Excellent! Now I've just got to add it to the FF mod....
BTW, mind if I cook up some sounds for you?
Ozymandias Feb 20, 2007, 11:27 AM Utterly amazing, especially the use of light on the Plasma attack and OMG that death flic!
Awesome.

odintheking Feb 20, 2007, 06:00 PM This thing is absolutely great! I like the attacks, with all sorts of lasers and missiles. The death is nice and explodey, too.
Bluemofia Feb 20, 2007, 09:21 PM So awsomely well animated! And still so ugly! :D
Nice Job!
WilliamOfOrange Feb 21, 2007, 06:01 PM Not to sound like a broken record, but he does indeed strut, as he should. And the death flic is so amazingly great, that I would put them in the game as barbs or as cheap-to-build, low hit-point, weak units just to be able to see the death animation over and over!
Great job, Wyrm! :goodjob:
Spacer One Feb 21, 2007, 09:17 PM Wow wyrm... :hatsoff: what they said :agree: ...best death animation ever...lighting, jump jets, etc...wow
Wyrmshadow Feb 22, 2007, 12:50 AM Thank you all for the kind words. Normally I don't like all the butt kissing but that's not what this is. I'm more surprised than anyone at how well this turned out. The only thing I have against it is that the civ colors in the pallete didn't turn out perfect. They did when I first previewed them but after I exported, it had dark lines around everything.
And the only thing 'new' about the death are the blue plasma balls. The other explosions are my stock ones I've been using this past year for my SOE things. The large mushroom plume is what I did for my new Montana BB.
Wyrmshadow Feb 22, 2007, 12:52 AM Bhitta's Mechwalker is still my favorite. This one is incredible though
I actually borrowed his walker so I could make a good walk. I had some plug-ins missing so it went all to crap, but I got the inital pose and just worked from there. There is a bit of a jerky bounce coming from the right leg but smooth from the left. It's annoying to me, but I can live with it.
TopGun Feb 22, 2007, 07:09 AM I totally missed this release! :)
Well, I usually couldn't care less for any mecha/robot/future thingies... but the craftsmanship that went into this unit is inspiring. Not only is this a showcase for where you are as a unit creator today, but it also highlights the possibilities Bryce offers.
With this unit, you clearly stirred my curiosity to explore what Bryce can do for me. Thanks!
Wyrmshadow Feb 27, 2007, 12:51 AM YIPPPEEE!!! Someone just bought this model off Turbosquid.
TopGun Feb 27, 2007, 07:35 AM YIPPPEEE!!! Someone just bought this model off Turbosquid.
Congrats! Doesn't surprise me, this is a masterpiece after all. :D
Ozymandias Mar 04, 2007, 12:21 PM Congrats! Doesn't surprise me, this is a masterpiece after all. :D
Ditto that. Congrats. :goodjob:
Obscure as this might seem - Vincent Van Gogh went to his grave never having sold a single painting in his entire life and therefore not believing he was a "real" artist. You're one up. Keep it up. I think more people than you suspect will be cheering you on.
I for one have long suspected that you are that rare breed, a true artist at heart. Just don't go cutting off any ears and mailing them to ex-girlfriends. I'm told it tends to upset people. ;) :D
All The Best,
Oz
Wyrmshadow Jan 21, 2008, 08:24 AM After seeing my unit in the Unit of the year competition I decided to take a 2nd look at it and I was embarassed. There were some major, MAJOR pallete and animation problems that I never saw in Flicster. Bjornlo once said that I am my own worst critic. If I was as critical of others then the mods would call it flaming.
So I spent the weekend re-animating everything and using another program with a better pallete. Check the 1st post.
PETROBRAS Jan 21, 2008, 09:30 AM With this size and this death animation I do not know whether use is to destroy or be destroyed...:mwaha:
Stormrage Jan 21, 2008, 02:15 PM Thanks, Wyrm!
Chris85 Jan 21, 2008, 02:27 PM New and improved!
BadKharma Jan 21, 2008, 02:51 PM Great job seems like you keep improving everything.
Exoticpollution Jan 21, 2008, 05:49 PM That thing could stomp quite a few Nazgul. In-game I mean.
It looks great though it really did before too. I remember when you were critical of certain Battletech units but I didn't think then that you'd show how great a mecha unit could be.
Keep up the good work.
