Ralph, watch out for Gandhi. I think a spear/xbow or an xbow/mace should be positioned on each of the couple shore hills.

I am torn concerning techs, because engineering brings pikes too, which would be handy against indian elephants. But still, let's try for the lib slingshot and trade for engineering and optics.

Taking Tabriz would close sea route between iron city and mongolian western cities. I think we should take it.

Yeah, tip number one is watch out for Gandhi. We need to get two troops on each of the gold mines he can attack amphibiously. I had one on there. The first elephant lost, but then the next won and he landed 3 troops.

Also, don't waste too many catapults. When faced with longbows it can be tempting to suicide a lot. But if there are only 2 or 3 longbows, then the collateral is only going onto 1 or 2 defenders. If may be better to lose 1 attacker per defender killed.

I was thinking we would raze Tabriz and Tiflis, keep the rest. Tabriz only gets us 1 extra land square that we wouldn't already have (sheep).

Ralph: How do you know that neither brennus or hannibal have paper? We have neither of the techs that lead to paper, so we cannot know if they have it yet.

Sounds to me like Hannibal has to be our first target. He's running away with it. Also, he's right next to Genghis' lands.

Re Paper I probably have misunderstood this which is the opening tech trade screenshot,
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j19/Ralph_Jackson/paper.jpg
as I could see paper in the "can research" column I forgot we couldn't research it ourselves so assumed that as it wasn't in the "will won't trade " columns assumed they hadnt researched it yet. Still makes sense to me but you learn something new every game!!

Oh right, I agree that screen is confusing. I use the old-skool advisors.

IHT 815 AD Birka to Trireme as does not need a forge for happiness and is very hammer poor.
Start a farm to irrigate Uppsala's corn

Turn1 830AD. Troops are healing in Karakorum
Gandhi has a galley but isnt landing troops at Uppsala, probably heading North.
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j19/Ralph_Jackson/1GandhiSettler.jpg
In looking at defenders at Uppsala and Birka it is clear that newly built troops will need to go on garrison duty first meaning we must achieve what we can versus Khan with the troops in Karakorum.
Uppsala has grown unahppy but this will disappear when whip anger wears off so ignore.

Turn 2 845AD :coffee:

Turn 3 / 4 860AD Troops healed and set off for Turfan
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j19/Ralph_Jackson/1army.jpg
Turn 5 890AD Civil Servcie in and switch to Bureacracy and start out on Paper.
Gandhi's galley was carrying a settler as this little hut shows he has settled on the coast somewhere
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j19/Ralph_Jackson/1gandhihut.jpg
Turfan looks takable
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j19/Ralph_Jackson/1turfan.jpg
Turn 6 905AD Gandhi Galley is approaching Uppsala, we have troops garrisoned on the mines but we may lose some and get pillaged (again).

Turn 7 920AD Thanks to the top tips of the team the we repel Ganhdis forces but lose a mine to Pillaging.

Turn 8 OB with Hannibal Start bombarding Turfan and Karakorum comes out of revolt

Turn 9 Darn as Gandhi lands another stack at Uppsala which kills our wounded troops on that square but more importantly kills 2 workers Grrr, the remaining troops finish off his attackers but this one bugs me

Turn 10 Turfans culture is down but Khan now has Machinery as his first crossbow appears, need to take this city fast and then sue for Peace until Berserkers start arriving at the front.
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j19/Ralph_Jackson/1khanpeace.jpg
Turn 11 980AD Turfan falls take Horse Riding for a peace Treaty (he wouldn't give us feudalism), notice Hannibal has paper (and philosophy) so Liberalism is out. However as only he has paper it should still have good trade value so will complete it before moving onto Engineering

Turn 12-15 all quiet

End of Turn

The Garrisons at Uppsala and Birka are now stronger so helpfully Manic will have less grief with Gandhi's elephants (how do you fit an Elephant in a Galley tell me that)!!!

Paper is due in next turn and we will hopefully get good trade value from it. Next tech should be engineering though we may need to sink some beakers in it before we can pick it up for paper.

2 workers in New Sarai are on the way to hook up its gold mine
2 workers in Karakorum for improvements (horse need hooking up) with riverside floodplain cottages this can be a good commerce city
Workboat is ready to hook up fish at Birka which can then run scientists if desired.

Cheers, lets try and keep the turnset every 2-3 days pace as it will keep the game fun, this one is going to be hard to win as we are quite far behind in Techs though with cottages coming on line are economy is improving rapidly. We doing well in hammer terms versus the AI and with commerce improving thta suggest build berserkers and Cats for the next war as the key aim.

I think this game is going to look like the uphill battle we had in SGOTM2. Let's hope the financial cottages would help us get back in business quickly. On diplo field, let's befriend the confucian coalition : ring a bell ? in fact, we don't need them to be friends forever, we are going to spread judaism like hell. New Sarai is a good candidate to be our priest production city. If we can avoid trading with Brennus, then we should do so

Keep those berserkers going, we need to eliminate Genghis to focus on a new target.

I think astronomy would be a nice trade tech here. We should use paper to get optics and like Ralph said, see if we can't get engineering after putting some beakers into it. Then astro is the way IMO, let's kill some of those annoying indian triremes wandering around and prepare to invade Carthage

I agree with blid that we should go for astronomy. Trade for optics, whip caravels, circumnavigate, kill triremes, explore the other continent(s), build galleons, invade Carthage with inferior troops like in SGOTM2, job's a good 'un.

Forge in Birka was meant to amplify whips, not increase its 1 hammer by 25%.

Manic is up.

Kikinit - how's life in the UK? Weather good enough for you? I'm in cambridge - really nice here at the moment.

circumnavigate
Mehmed II did that during my last turnset. Forgot to talk about it. He did it with galleys BTW

We've still got one more AI to meet, too.

how do you fit an Elephant in a Galley tell me that

Well you start by filling the galleys up with custard ...

Going for Optics - Caravals - Exploration & Circum bonus.
Then after astro.
We could then use mass cats/beserkers to attack another civ for a new land.

Remember, we do not want to win this game - we want to lose a space race victory.
If we give Ghandi our lands he will win space race very easily.

Turn 0.
Pressed Enter.

2 combat navy wins vs ghandi.

Turn 1.
Paper in - started on optics.
Not sure who i shoudl/not trade with. Paper not got by anyone.
I deside not to trade - as we would only get the following trade with all parties.

Optics for paper + World map.

Not that its an aweful trade, but we will be giving away our only tech lead.
Also means that others can get edu - lib.

Another navy win. we have a lot of combat 1 trireems now.

Turn 2
Continued to make military.
Looking at trade options brennus has a few nice resourses.
Crab for Corn (as krak was 1 away from heath limit)
No point getting happy res as we dont need it yet.
Traded gold for 10gpt - helps with science rate quite a lot.

Turn 3.
Hannibal looks like the best to invaide - he is the tech leader (has edu now) so we should take him out as much as possible when we get astro. Even if it is a few cities and raiding his lands.
Desided to trade paper now, as we get more for it now. World map and techs.

Paper to washington for Optics (5 turns) WM & 80 gold.
Paper to Mehmed for Theology, WM & 30 Gold.

Can only get 10 gold from Brennus so didn't bother.
Traded so gold for 7gpt to mehmet also.

With optics in i upgrade 2 trireems to caravals (one each side of continent).

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/101529/SS_b1.jpg

It seems like the AI are on a snake like continent, with Hannibal closes (and also viable for a gally invasion).
Looks like brennus has a massive land area.
It also seems that the circum bonus has gone also.

I desided to change to engineering as we dont need astro for hanni invasion. It also leads us to guilds - gunpowder - chemistry.

Turn 4.
Not much of note.

I wouls also mention at this point all AI civs are pissed with ghandi - thus he has not been able to tech up.

Turn 5.
Ghandi attacks with landing 4 elephants near birka. Also destroying the fish,
I take most of the navy but he still has the eles there. Whipped another spear so that our defenders have some help next turn. Also routed some other military to the location - think this is the next place to fortify.

Turn 6&7.

Ghandi raided the gems - killed all eles by the next turn.

Landed more eles - they shouldnt be too much of a problem.

Left it here. Thoughts for next turn sets.

Watch out for a ghandi landing party north.

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/101529/SS_b2.jpg

Repel invaiding ghandi troops.
Take out all of mongolia.
Get astro and invaide hannibal.
After we have a foothold on the new conti - move out militart out of our northern cities. Give them to ghandi asap - he is backwards in tech and we dont want that at all.

Hi. I'm back. Unfortunatley I'm not able to play due to my graphic card disfunction (some ram is toasted, sic). I must buy a new card before I'll be able to play, will do that next week.

Gandhi being backwards technologically is indeed bad news. I think this makes spreading judaism more urgent. I didn't check if he built a shrine or not, but at least he would have religion based friends. He would automatically get MMS bonus with each civ we're warring, so Hannibal would hopefully give him some techs later on

Played 14 turns. Hired an extra scientist in Upsalla. Declared on Genghis on turn 5 (he would not give us any gold for extortion). I'll spare you the gory details, but we cleaned up. Captured 3 cities, razed 3. Only lost about 5 troops.

http://img122.imageshack.us/img122/1653/newlandsks0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

He has 2 cities left. Once we have galleons we can take Samarquand, and Tabriz can be razed any time because it has weak defense.

Diplomatically, I didn't (and couldn't) do anything at all. Kept research on astronomy. Main builds were trebs.

We generated 1 great scientist and 1 great general, both are unused waiting for instructions. Met the final AI, Isabella.

http://img478.imageshack.us/img478/433/izzypq9.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

She is buddhism founder, not very advanced and at war with Mehmed. She would later sign peace with the Ottoman later in my turnset.

I gifted Gandhi a worker (let him capture it) to improve his northernmost city.

Blid is up now, I'll let him choose which jewish city he wants to keep. Our cities are not very happy with all the WW. I guess we prepare an invasion force for Hannibal?

Oh, sorry, I wasn't aware we already had a jewish city (New Sarai). Should have whipped a monastery then. Still, I guess that's OK because it built a forge during my turnset and needed a forge if it's going to build missionaries.

Nice to see our colors dominating the continent :) Nice jump in score too
We already have a jewish city, New Sarai and it is excellent for missionary duty
That coastal city of Genghis seems like a raze to me for now. Would see if he pays anything to delay his death
What to do with the scientist ? academy seems like good long term choice, for us now and later for Gandhi ?
Would try to play this tomorrow, if not then definitely by the week end

Kikinit - how's life in the UK? Weather good enough for you? I'm in cambridge - really nice here at the moment.Life's good at the moment. I am sick of hotels though and will be getting into an apartment next week.

I'm in the North-East (Teesside to be precise) so the weather is not fantastic but it's been bearable.

One of my colleagues wants to go surfing off the coast south of Middlesbrough and as I'm an Aussie and done it before he presumes I will be interested. I am, but I'm not so sure that the North Sea is a very hospitable place with the water being so freakin' cold.

I am still out of action PC wise as the laptop my co. has provided is not CIV capable. I'll let you know if that changes.

Manic_
May 04, 2007, 12:41 PM
Yeah, the only place in the UK i'd even consider surfing is in Devon or Cornwall. Way too cold in the north sea bud!
Looks cool - we spread Judaism to our main cities up north first so that they can get missionaries - we should perhaps then switch to Month so we don't need monistaries.
Before we invaide the next conti we should have 10x trebs (attack at 2 cities and 5 for each). And approx 15-20 Beserkers.
We could then take 2 cities and have a foot hold - with the next wave helping the healed 1st wave units.
Once we have got all (or most, 5-6 cities min) from hanni we should start moving all our troops south. Leaving the north free for a Ghandi invasion.
Eventually move through washington and give ghandi the south also.
We can then try and 'raid' the other civs lands to cripple their econ so ghandi will win Space easy.

Edit- Not about this weekend - Stag Do in Bristol so i'll see you guys monday.

Just looking also - Hanni is Conf Holy city - so that should be #1 target.

May 06, 2007, 05:47 PM
Sorry, I kept that all the week end. It was a busy one. I played in two sessions, trying to consolidate though building some units too.

IHT : cancel gems gift to Brennus. Trade for his silver (2 happiness points :)) and get fish from Brennus
Merge artist in Nidaros. There is a problem with the general, I don't see any productive city that should get the academy. The best candidate is Haithabu with three hills. Brogvin already has the heroic epic and would be taken by Gnadhi sometimes in the future so I don't feel like sending the general there. New Sarai is the jewish center. Karakorum feels like a cottage heaven. I send the general towards Haithabu, waiting for education to build the academy

The scientist is merged in the capital

Want to take Tiflis quickly and take some tech from Genghis. Right now, he offers music. Maybe he'll throw feudalism later

Turn 1 :
Genghis sends a treb and takes Navajo back.

Haithabu starts a trading post. Let's get use of our UB, galleons are coming

I take Navajo back and send units towards Tiflis.

Turn 2 : we have -2 at 40%. Need to do something about those finances. Grow and work cottages seems like the key, we will start to get advantage from mongolian lands soon, so I'm not too worried. Astro takes 10 turns

Hannibal discovers liberalism. 1244 AD is a nice date for an AI

Turn 3 :

Start a market in the capital.
Take Tiflis. Glad I didn't have much fighting to do, it was not my best day

http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/blidblid/SGOTM4/turnset4/01.jpg

I decided to keep that city, for the gold mine. Should pay for itself. It would also keep other AIs from settling our continent

Sign peace with Genghis for feudalism and a world map. At 40%, we get from -6 to +34 gold. Some trade routes must have opened

Turn 4 :
realize Hannibal settled our continent. I guess that would be the first target

http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/blidblid/SGOTM4/turnset4/02.jpg

whip monastery in New Sarai.

Turn 5 :

well, studying irrigation chains

Turn 6 :

Astro in. I hesitate before trading it way but finally opted for this choice :

http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/blidblid/SGOTM4/turnset4/03.jpg

We need guilds to build knights and philo to start researching nationalism. The downside is that Hannibal is the only one who would trade education right now but by giving him astro, I don't take much risks because the other AIs won't have much to offer him for exchange. Only Brennus is up DR on him and it's monopoly so I don't think he'll trade it away. Printing press is already known by Hannibal, so I really like nationalism right now for both the drafting and the tech trading value. Guild opens up gunpowder, a tech looooved by the AI. We trade for that, then research chemistry ourselves to kill the rifles who won't take that long before they start appearing

But something has me really worried, Gandhi has not discovered civil service yet. This stupid bastard has killed his economy sending units at us early in the game.

Turn 7 :
Gunpowder known all around but only Hannibal knows astro.
Start a second market in Uppsala
I need to rely on our newly mongolian aquisitions to build galleons but they are not ready yet. For the moment, only Haithabu is building one. Whip forge in old Sarai and queue a galleon there.

Finish session 1

Turn 8
nothing to do, so I check trades and cancel crab for corn deal with Brennus. We have our own now.

Turn 9

Nidaros : market->galleon to ferry missionaries to Brennus

Turn 10
education still not available. I beg Mehmed II for money

Turn 11

Gandhi finally adopts bureaucracy. Expect some maces to visit us.
Obs whipped in Kara. Growth in this city is spectacular

Turn 12

banking is also known now. I kill one of Gandhi's caravels with a galleon

Turn 13

Our first jewish missionary succeds in Celtic lands

Turn 14

zzzzz

Turn 15

Mehmed II is in WFYABTA. Brennus still refuses to part with education. We can get gunpowder and drama from him. Don't know if we should do that yet. I gifted gems to Washington to gain some bonuses. We don't have many partners.
Washington don't have too much lands and likes to trade. He can play a nice AI passthrough.

New Sarai just built a missionary and started another. I suggest to whip next turn, get overflow on a third and send them to Brennus. There's a galleon waiting for them. If we turn Brennus jewish, he would be Gandhi's pal and we should be able to bribe him against Isabella. Man, I hate that girl

All our army is positioned in Old Sarai. We should get a couple pikes from near by cities

http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/blidblid/SGOTM4/turnset4/04.jpg

We have a galleon west and two coming soon. A quick war to finish Genghis is in order to gain that island. It would be a nice stepover for attacking Hannibal. Brojgvin just finished the forge and is set nicely to build us some knights. Those guys are good against muskets and they can travel fast from Brojgvin up north.

It's easier said than done, but I think we should do it next round. This guy would get rifles soon. Speaking of that, our next tech should be chemistry. We need to trade for gunpowder. We shouldn't trade for the techs we don't need. At least, not until we get more partners. A WFYABTA from Brennus and we're stuck, knowing that Hannibal is our next target. But if Brennus does close tech trades, we should convert to confucianism. That would probably turn Mehmed II to friendly and Washington would trade again.

I like your plans to convert Brennus. He has nice lands and would make a decent trading partner with Gandhi.

I have a feeling that Gandhi will take ages to send over enough troops to take our cities. I'm quite tempted to empty Upsalla and Birka right now, letting him have the great library. Problem is, AIs always leave a massive garrison in the city they just capture, and very unwilling to send troops to the next city. What's for sure is that we can't keep the status quo. Gandhi not even having CS when liberalism discovered? That would turn the game into a "let's kill everyone" game, which is bound not to give a good finish date.

I think I would have saved the scientist to lightbulb chemistry, but I should have said it at the time. Roster: Ralph is up.

OK the plan as I see it based on Blid's excellent analysis.

Merge GG at Haithabu
Spam jewish Missionaries and ferry them by caravel (Galleons needed for invasion of Hannibal) to Brennus to hopefully convert him (see later)
Research - complete Nationalism - trade for Gunpowder (Brennus will trade it for Astronomy) - Chemistry
Take Army from New Sarai by Galleon to conquer Samarqand and then attacking Hannibal - I would expect 2 landings at Kerkouane and Hadrametum.
Advice on the invasion gratefully received

What to do about Gandhi

It is clear he needs to drag himself out of a Tech Hole but..
No one likes him (he is in grave danger of being dog piled and wiped out)
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j19/Ralph_Jackson/6gandhinolike.jpg

Now when we attack Hannibal there will be some MMS bonuses so Hannibal may start trading with him but I think we absolutely need to try hard to convert Brennus to give Gandhi a chance. Note that Washington isn't a trading party option yet as they don't have contact!!

So key questions before I play (tonight or tomorrow night depending on when I get feed back)

1. Do we abandon Birka and Uppsala now to try and tempt gandhi to take them
2. Do I take the Gunpowder for Astronomy trade with Brennus?

I think merging the GG would be a waste because we won't have that city for long. Better joined to a grenadier or trebuchet IMO.

Manic_
May 07, 2007, 11:16 AM
Yeah - For GG merge with a unit. Make it ultimate city attacker.
Or save it for our new cities in Hanni land.

Basically next turnset should be to wipe out mongols.
Build up more arms to attack hanni.
The tur set after i think should attack hanni.
Once we have 2-3 cities on hanni's island we start moving units from the north.
Gift ghandi the same number of cities that we gain from hanni.
After we get about 8 we can then 'gift all'.

Getting judaism to all civs would be nice. But your right - giving ghandi a few trading partners is a must.

I like the rolling city surrender of Manic, i.e. When we have Samarqand and the first 2 of Hannibals cities we abandon Uppsala and Birka and then as we expand we abandon more...

Re the GG there are 2 tempting options.

Our City Raider 3 Catapult (which as a warlord would get a free upgrade to a trebuchet)
Or our experience 15 Berserker who would then Upgrade to a Scary grenadier when Chemistry comes in.

The question for me is would the Upgraded Treb be safe enough attacking citiies or would we be risking him in marginal fights?

Ralph

Ralph_Jackson

Just noticed we have a 19 experience Axeman who with the free upgrade would be even nastier than the Berserker..

Ironically I am wary of free upgrading our Medic Warlord Chariot to a knight as he is then more likely to be a defender..

You get more promotions per XP for previously unpromoted troops. So we could make a new berserker from Bjorgvin, general him to CRIII, then upgrade to a grenadier.

Manic_
May 07, 2007, 01:40 PM
yeah i think upgrading a new beserker would be the way forward. has combat1 & amph + 3Xp from rax and 20XP from GG giving 23 XP = CR1, 2, 3 & Cover.

Ralph_Jackson
May 07, 2007, 02:18 PM
But doesn't upgrading the Axe give us a CR3, Combat 2, Berserker + the Berserker built in Bjorgvin?

Turn 1 1334. Quiet waiting for Galleons

Turn 2 1340 Haithabu Galleon to Galleon as we need a decent Navy
Jewish Missionary despatched towards Brennus
In scouting Hannibals cities he now has Riflemen. Now Berserkers versus Riflemen is a mismatch too far in my book as we need Grenadiers. After much thought decide to finish Khan and then save / refer to team. And yes I cant puzzle out why Mehmed has 2 settlers sitting there either
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j19/Ralph_Jackson/1riflemen.jpg
Turn 3 1346 Troops "ready to sail to Samarqand" (sounds like the title to a cr*p sixties ballad!)

Turn 4 1352 Mehmed asks for Astronomy which is easily refused
Nationalism in switch to Nationhood and set research to Chemistry
2nd Jewish Missionary on the way to Brennus
DOW on Genghis

Turn 5 Sicca has a revolt to us, expect Hannibal will reinforce to prevent it flipping

Turn 6 Nice to see the graphic demonstration that the Marine Promotion does let Berserkers walk on water. Capture Samarqand and save as per above

Chemistry in 11 and no one has it yet.
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j19/Ralph_Jackson/1nochemistry.jpg
This suggest to me it is worth waiting till chemistry before attacking Hannibal. howvere although I feel I prosecute wars quite well I know I am occasionally timid about declaring so worth checking the teams views!! Also might now switch to Confucian to open trade opportunities with Mehmed

2 Jewish Missionaries (1 landed / 1 just offshore) ready to try and convert Brennus.

Cheers, sorry for the short turnset but as I don’t think attacking Hannibal is viable pre chemistry worth checking with the team first.

but you dont get amph - which is nice as we can attack from the ships :)

No, this is the reason why merging with the Axe was better (IMHO) as now after merging he has the free upgrade to a Berskerker so he has changed from a fairly useless Axe to at no gold cost a City Raider 3, Combat 2, Shock, Cover , Marine, Monster of a Berserker

oh right - didnt knew if you upgraded to beserker they get that promoton. Kewl!

I think waiting 11 turns will be too long - i'd say attack now while hanni only has a few units upgraded to rifles (1 per city).
If we wait 11 he may have 2 or 3 making it that much harder, even if we do have some grens.

I'd say get our galleons loaded with troops and wait at his boarder. Use 3 galleaons full of units for the cities kirk.. and hadr... on his eastern sore.
We can then push on from there.
Also be aware of the rifle on our island.

I don't know about you guys. But when attacking i land the trebs on the best defensive square next to the city with a few defenders.
So the Fur/Forest/Hills in the south, and probably the tile 1n of the other city as it has not been roaded.
Also carth has a nice landing hill next to it for later.
I think attack early - try and get brennus & Isabella on our side if possible.

It's a tricky one.

Pros of declaring: It's not just 11 turns till grenadiers. Once we have the tech, we wait the turns to whip some granadiers and get them to front lines, or upgrade some troops which also takes a while and is beaker wasteful. His power graph it not too high compared to ours.

Cons of declaring: rifles are obviously not good for us. We don't know if he has military tradition either because we ourselves lack music. If he has cavalry and rifles, then that's really really bad. I think he probably has MT or is teching it now.

Not sure. If we don't declare now, we will have to wait for a long time. There may be a time when we can fight on tech parity (cannon, rifles and grens vs rifles and cavalry), but by that time he may have infantry.

Maybe we should just go for it and see what happens. Faint heart never won a fair lady.

I don't know about you guys. But when attacking i land the trebs on the best defensive square next to the city with a few defenders.

It depends on where his city with the big stack of counterattacking troops is. In the pre-railroad era, your method is sometimes best if the first city with few defenders is far away from this city. Other times, or if it's an evenly spread landmass like this one, I just land my stack next to his city with the big stack in and use collateral and city raider to my advantage.

Despite the compelling analyses from Manic and Soooo it's this line that convinces me to attack Hannibal.

1. If it works it's a gamble that "puts us back on track"
2. If it fails horribly at least we "have gone down in flames"

So if you are happy I will

1. Switch to Confucian (Start improving relations with Mehmed & Wash)
2. Assemble the Berserker / Treb force
3. DOW and try and take the two cities

I won't immediately try and get Brennus / Isabella into the war as I think with their distance it will be a phony war and I would rather use any bait we have with either of them to declare on each other once Brennus converted if possible.

So will try and play / report balance of my set tonight. With the pace of the game having picked up in the last few turnsets ( :goodjob: everyone ) the game is more involving now so lets try and keep the pace at this level.

A quick question, does anyone know how much of a Religious fanatic Brennus is?

What I mean is I know that Isabella will start hating us as soon as we go Confucian but will this switch damage relationships with Brennus to a degree that we should hold off switching?

I don't think we should go confucian. It would stop us trading with Brennus, and he might close borders, stopping missionaries.

OK I will hold off the Confucian switch.

Fist full of dynamite 'n' all =)

Well i think to hell with it - we could still live on with one city left until the space race if it ever got that bad, which i doubt.
We need to give Ghandi cities asap anway and now rather than 30 turns away would be better.

Just continue to spam out beserkers. if we have 3x as many than he has rifles i think we will be ok :)
Remember - taking 2 cities from him cuts his cities by 1/4 or 1/5 reducing production of military and leaves us intact.

Well the council of war had decided an Ultimatum would be issued to Ralph the Viking Leader.

“What are you wimping about for our Berserkers should attack Hannibal forthwith – look he is even wearing a hat that mocks the True Horned Viking helmet”

“But, but he has got Riflemen and I am scared” Ralph replied.

“For goodness sake” the war council proclaimed. “In the first place your last report showed that Viking’s can walk on water and look at our men; Fierce looking warriors with big axes; how can they be frightened of some pansies in Pale Blue Frock Coats with wimpish sticks that go bang”
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j19/Ralph_Jackson/monkey3.jpg
Well if you are sure…..Ralph timidly replied

“Look if you still have doubts just remember Horned Helmets can be worn on the head but they can also be shoved where the sun doesn’t shine .. Get on with it!!!

So the plan was set

Turn 7 1370 We need 2 more Galleons at Samarqand (total of 4) to land troops in sufficient numbers versus Hannibal

1st Missionary fails in Isca.

Turn 8 Our caravel goes scouting Hannibal’s cities, most troops haven’t been upgraded to Riflemen at least

2nd Missionary succeeds in Verlamion

Whip Courthouse in Navajo
Whip Observatory in Birka
Whip Galleon in Old Sarai
See what happens when you make my blood boil and I get all aggressive!! People suffer!! Seriously we have a lot of food rich hammer poor cities and we might as well whip in some infrastructure.
Sell world map to Isabella to generate funds to help research.

Hannibal founds a city East of Turfan
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j19/Ralph_Jackson/2hanibalfound.jpg
Turn 9 1382 AD Troops nearly ready to attack..

Turn 10 1388 – Jewish missionary departs for Brennus. Oh look what I have found Cavalry which will just eat our troops for Breakfast.
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j19/Ralph_Jackson/2cavalry.jpg
So wimpishly I hand over…

Ralph trooped into the war council with head held low, undid his belt, bent over and assumed the position.

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j19/Ralph_Jackson/monkey2.jpg
“Look you can say what you like and do your worst with that helmet but I am not fighting Cavalry with Berserkers!!”

Cheers

Ralph AKA “TeamWimp”

Seriously I ran out if time to play carefully and indeed was in a Quandary, the attack is ready versus Hannibal for the next player but I do think Cavalry eat Berserkers for Breakfast (ever had a close look at a Horse's - teeth Scary!). Now maybe we could attack Washington instead he is lower on the Power Graph and less advanced. The distance is further but with a Forbidden Palace (close to being unlocked – hence the dialled in Courthouse builds) the Maintenance costs wouldn’t kill us.. and the Great lighthouse in Washington obsoletes very late and would immediately boost our Economy. The galleons are only a couple of turns away but feel free to be brave and attack Hannibal as we haven’t lost any time as it would have been launched next turn. Kerkouane is only defended by a Rifle a Pike and Longbowman

Pindicator is up now, but I'm pretty sure he is still injured (has done his back in). We'll give him 24 hours to pick it up in any case, to leave time for discussion.

That sounds like it's time for a personal update. I've been keeping up if not posting much. My back is gladly getting better, enough that I've gone back to work this week. I'm starting physical therapy and from what they're telling me it just sounds like a freak injury -- I just managed to tweak it so, you know? But it is getting better and I'm off a vast majority of the pain meds I was on that made me groggy and inattentive.

Other time conflicts keep me from playing until at least the weekend. Which may be a good thing, considering we have a bunch of troops and the tough choice of what to do with them. (I would have chickened out, too, Ralph!)

So I will post a "got it" and plan on playing this weekend, unless someone wants to grab it before then.

Glad to hear your getting better - i have had back problems in the past, just got up out of my Computer Chair and it went, was in agony for 2 days.

I think perhaps waiting until the weekend would be ok for this turnset as we have a big choice to make here.

I still say lets go out with a bang :)

He does have cavalry, but his power graph is not that much higher than us. It makes one wonder just how many troops he has.

If I had no knowledge of his tech level and looked purely at the power graph, I would declare in a second. This team could handle anything under 150% opponent's power compared to us during war.

But my worry is that he has only just started upgrading. If he continues to do so (and it's probable that he emergency upgrades when declared on) then his power graph will rocket.

But still, it may be better to attack.

*sits firmly on the fence, would not be crtitical of a decision to either attack, wait, or attack someone else*

pindicator
May 10, 2007, 07:47 PM
Well, an option would be for us to declare and then wait a turn or two to see what he does with his troops.

Ralph_Jackson
May 11, 2007, 02:59 AM
Well here is my analysis / thoughts.

We must attack someone as we have an absolute need to expand and war is the only option. I think we all agree on that

There are only two possible targets being Hannibal and Washington as we have deignated Brennus for Conversion and Isabella / Mehmed are to far away.

Washington is much weaker in terms of Power and Tehconology than Hannibal. Now normally I feel it is better to try and take down the Big Dog if possible. However we might well fail versus Hannibal without Grenadiers to Neutralise Riflemen.

The Killer for me is the presence of the Great Lighthouse, this late obsoloteing wonder is very vaulable on this sort of map with lots of Coastal Cities always being a feature of our Empire. The extra commerce form this can be close to a Courthouse in every coastal city.

Proposal

Invade Washington with our Treb / Berserker force which might well be sufficient to take out most of Washington.
Unlock the Forbidden palace so we can build it in Washington's lands so that the distance isn't a factor.

Research Chemistry and move onto Steel so we can build Grenadiers ready for the second War versus Hannibal.

Ralph

p.s. Off to open my Birthday presents & Have a party so won't be on the forums much this weekend.

I think we must attack now. We were and still are paying a huge amount of money for this army, need to have it occupied. Now Hannibal doesn't have a huge territory, only 8 cities on his own continent. The stupid ones on ours are completely useless. My opinion is to go after him right away. With a little chance, he won't upgrade all his units. As for cavalry, well we just need to start the attack on Thapsus, in his north west and lock him off horses. I don't think he built many of them already. Thapsus is also close to the double holy city. The confucian shrine is probably participating greatly in Hannibal crazy tech rate.
I see another drawback in holding off the attack. There is a big risk Mehmed and Hannibal would sign a DP, they've been friendly for ages. And there we'll be completely screwed if we take the american cities. If we're taken in sandwich between confucian allies,we'll really feel the teeth closing on us.
Also, chemistry is due in 7 turns, so it won't be that long before we start bringing our grenadiers. I think we shouldn't split our forces yet. Concentrat on one point to resist the initial counterattack. It would be the most violent one. After that, Hannibal will be gassed. Like I said, he doesn't have a million cities, so he won't be able to spam units very quickly. I would also advise to keep aggressive jewish campaign on Brennus. Start converting the most populated cities.

P.S :

“For goodness sake” the war council proclaimed. “In the first place your last report showed that Viking’s can walk on water and look at our men; Fierce looking warriors with big axes; how can they be frightened of some pansies in Pale Blue Frock Coats with wimpish sticks that go bang”

:rotfl:
funny photos you got there Ralph. And happy birthday :bday:

Would you believe that this is the first (and possibly last) turnset for me in this SG? Between moving and then injuring myself, I timed things pretty well. I want to start the turnset off by apologizing for the following events.

Firstly, I accidentally declared on the wrong person once I was in position. Reload. Why did I think Hannibal was Brennus?

All :smoke: aside, I went for the plan to assault Tharsus. Depriving Hannibal of his Cavalry seemed the best chance for success. One problem was that it took 3 full turns for me to move the fleet into position. But that allowed time to bring a 5th galleon along, with a knight and two more zerks. I really wanted to get some pikes for the Cavalry, but the consensus seemed to be that waiting was not the way to go, so I went for the advance.

Tharsus was defended by a rifle and a CG crossbow. We lost 2 inexperienced zerks taking the city.

But the counter-attack was indeed brutal. 3 cavalry came in the first turn, and we saw a sign of things to come on the first IT:

http://img245.imageshack.us/img245/3641/sgotm4fistful1418adlysaql6.jpg

Let heralds sing of how he bravely fell in combat, doing absolutely zero damage to the cavalry that smote him down. Combat II really did him in, and I cursed myself for even allowing him in the city. Chemistry was only due in 2 turns, I should have waited.

Still, there were 3 cavalry on the doorstep of Tharsus, and I threw everything I had at dislodging them. First I made sure Hannibal could not build any new ones:

http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/1609/sgotm4fistful1418adpilljg7.jpg

And then I threw everything I had at the cavalry. The first 4 trebs were promoted as best I could see fit, and all perished while knocking the 3 cavalry down. Then it was time to send in the remaining zerks. The rolls were not kind: we lost at 50% and at 70% but eventually we killed the cavalry.

Remaining troops: 1 knight, 3 zerks, 1 treb. Morale was low.

Then the next turn's wave of troops came: Cavalry, Riflemen, and Macemen.

http://img245.imageshack.us/img245/1330/sgotm4fistful1424adwateop5.jpg

I feel like I could have done this better, but I'm not sure it was winnable. Tharsus was a great idea for pillaging the horses, but the supply lines are too far: our reinforcements off isle are too far away; our galleons cannot get to them in time.

Obviously we pillage the pasture and retreat our troops onto the nearby Galleon. But there isn't much available for a counter-attack, and as I mentioned the galleons are all out of place (especially as they have skirted around Hannibal's navy stationed in Hippo).

I have uploaded the save (http://gotm.civfanatics.net/saves/civ4sgotm4/Fistful_of_Dynamite_SG004_AD1424_01.CivWarlordsSav e), but I plan on playing the remaining turns to finish my set. I need to think about what we're going to do. My best plan: turn off cash, build zerks, and upgrade them to grenadiers. Reign terror from the seas.

I almost forgot: we did capture another town, shortly before the first shot was fired

I kept the city, figuring the food tile alone was worth it being around. But this may have actually been a bad thing: we now have a rifleman loose in our territory, which before would have been guarding a crappy city.

well getting the caralry out of the picture is good. Makes it easier for the next wave of grens.
I think we should just build grens with all cities, forget improvements.
(When available)
We get a massive force and just walk through the other conti.

We need to give ghandi our cities asap - ASAP!

Well my thoughts are:

1. Pindicator you should PM the moderators re the Relaod and checks things are OK with them.

2. Strategy:-

I think it is now full on Military and other than Jewish missionaries and whipping in Infrastructure in newly acquired cities Grenadiers (+ some Frigates) are the order of the day. They are the most powerful unit out there and if we retain our Monopoly we can have the Military Upperhand versus Cav's and Riflemen with Grenadiers and the Odd Pike.

I think research should be on Steel not banking as this would be another Monopoly Tech and further push us up the Military ladder.

Our key objective is taking down all of Hannibal, Washington and Mehmed and we can afford to have delayed some economic techs to assist our conquest and Steel fits the bill much more.

As Manic has said we need to be able to let Gandhi expand and being able to Punish Hannibal is the way to unlock that.

Guess there is no going back now. I agree with the others here, throw all we have, whip grenadiers and some trebs to bring down the defenses.
IMO, we should go steel too, banking is already known by AIs and we need the military power.

Agree with Ralph and Blid's points.

Reload for alt-clicking on the wrong AI should be fine, an honest mistake.

I have PMed the admins just to be clear on this, but it was an honest mistake. I somehow thought Brennus was Hannibal, don't know what :weed: I was smoking. It was pretty comical. I declared, moved my troop against Tharsus and highlighted units to begin looking at percentages for the attack. I kept asking myself, why aren't the attack percentages showing? And finally when I moved a unit into the town I realized what a stupid thing I had done.

Well, I will whip grens, but I am going to do some upgrading of existing zerks so we can have some amphibious grens around for an initial assault. We already have some zerks available for upgrade. Then we can swap over to Steel. We really do have a good amount of troops available for a secondary wave, including a good amount of trebs and cats plus our combat medic knight: they just need to get shuttled over. Maybe I should whip another Galleon or 2 as well.

Gandhi will get to take some northern cities if he shows his pretty face. Not the HE city, not yet. But he hasn't landed any troops during my initial turns. Should I take away the troops we have defending the gold mine?

Here is the message I sent to AlanH:

AlanH,
Don't know what type of :smoke: I was smoking, but I moved up troops against Hannibal's borders in our SGOTM for war, and somehow thought he was Brennus instead. I declared on Brennus (yes, I opened the diplomatic window and still didn't realize what I was doing wrong!) and then proceeded to try to attack Hannibal's cities. It was a bit comical, actually: I moved the boats with the zerks next to the town, and tried to get the attack percentages to highlight with each unit to figure out who to attack with first. When that wouldn't work, I finally just "attacked" with a unit, and watched it move safely into Hannibal's town. That's when the light clicked on. (Off topic here, but you guys should get a light-bulb smiley! I mean, you already have it for the post icon list.)

So I reloaded from that turn's autosave, figuring it as an honest mistake and well within the spirit of the rules. The team wanted me to PM you, to be sure that this is clear with the admins of the competition. Don't know if we're going to win any prizes (except maybe for :smoke: moves, no thanks to me  ) but we still want to play on the up and up, and have a high respect for the rules that go into a competition like this.

If you have any issues with this mishap, please let me know. I'd hate to penalize my team for some lapse of brain-power on my end. Although maybe I shouldn't have reloaded seeing how the attack turned out...

Please let me know if there are any issues.

-pin

A reload is a reload, honest mistake or not. However, in this case, and as a rare exception, I'll exercise discretion and let you play on. The other options would be to abandon
