da_Vinci Jul 12, 2007, 03:21 PM I have already bombarded Santiago. There were only 4 units there when I saw it last turn. VERY IMPORTANT Naval Force is set to automove this turn. Stop them!!!!! I'm deinitely good hitting him some more. I don't think there will be much left of the Toledo stack when you're done with that one. You need to take it right now so can't reinforce it further. You mean not much left of our stack when I am done in Toledo? Could be, but I'm hoping to get away with only four losses at most. I am going to take a really close look at what promotions to use for that assault. I'm thinking sac one art, then maybe go next with a collat damage promoted tank (if that is available), then a couple more art ... depends on how much damagte the first art does.
Collat damage depeds on how many strikes the art lands in the battle, doesn't it? So a weak art might not do much collat damage if it dies fast? Or am I mistaken? If I am right, that is why a collat damage tank early might be a key to limiting losses. Might get a lot of hits in for collat damage.
My thought is after hitting those two cities, make peace with B, as that should allow us to go to 0 culture (more science) and keep us happy for now.
After we get democracy in two turns, do we change civics? Might get 3 for 3 turns ... which do we want? And I assume we chase flight next? Hammers from towns (free speech?) would be nice, if avail.

I use CD promo for units that I intend to sacrifice. But I like using CR2,3 for units that I intend to keep moving. I check to see when I can get 50%-60% or so with my CR Art, and then continue attacking with those.
da_Vinci Jul 12, 2007, 07:36 PM Razed Toledo with two losses ... might have been one but I misclicked and sent a tank earlier than I wanted.
We took a -5 diplo hit for razing one of Izzy's cites (she founded it), so I am thinking of giving her Santiago back if I have the option ... keeps us from going in the diplo hole with her further, and gets her closer to breaking free of Mehmed.
What do you guys think of that?
Also, we could go back to Buddhism if we need to make Izzy happy with us. Which would also allow us to run Theocracy ... something to think about.
I'll wait a couple of hours to see if I get a reaction to giving Izzy Santiago back, but if I don't hear, I think it makes enough sense for me to just do it.
Izzy is now annoyed with us at -1 ... we have a bunch of deals with her ... will she cancel them at annoyed if we don't revolt to Budd (1 turn) this turn?
Maybe I do need to wait for some advice on more than Santiago

da_Vinci Jul 13, 2007, 03:12 AM Ok, I played to democracy and uploaded. Three turns, as I spent one revolting to Buddhism to get Izzy back to cautious, at least until we attack M which will piss her off, I think (besides the war due to vassal status).
Did not get an option to return Santiago, so I razed it. I guess B held it long enough to own it.
Overall I think I lost 3 units taking the two cites. I now have 20 units in 5 transports off the coast of Madrid, with three more waiting for a 6th transport to arrive in 2 or 3 turns. I think we should leave the hill promoted inf on the hill to watch the troops in Madrid. Bring the 22 for the backstab at Istanbul.
On the same turn that we hit Istanbul, I think we can take and hold both Izmir and Diyarakir, as we can cross the border with tanks and still get one more move to attack, in concert with amphib from the sea. After the capture, land units can come in and reinforce. Then move carefully on Olmec, and harass the coast with what remains of the task force.
We'll need to upgrade some of the weaker inf to SAM if we plan to launch the backstab in the next 5 turns or so. M has a few gunships running around. Keep the amphib inf as inf for attacks.
Do we change civics now? If we want to backstab right away, maybe not yet. If yes, to what? Might want to keep slavery until we can whip Olmec, Diyar and Izmir after the unrest. There is cult pressure on Utica, so maybe free speech, U suff, Theocracy if anything.
Sent an inf to see if G rebuilt mines in Cibola ... he has not! You can lead a horse to water ... :rolleyes:

1. Backstab ASAP, or build up a bit more first? Mehmed has four casings and three thrusters done, so maybe ASAP? We don't want him to get space elevator, we want G to have that.
2. Revolt to new civics now? Depends on the answer to 1.
If the idea is to hit M in the three places I have mentioned, and in the next 5 to 10 turns, I can push that plan forward if you wish, or set it up for C63. Or we can just wait until he can see the save at this point.
If we have the same success against M as we had against B, then we may be about to take control of this game (finally! :goodjob: ).

So the options are in my opinion 1)are when do we surprise attack Mehmed and how? 2) Do we give Gandhi more cities?

We wanted to take Toledo to raze it, not keep it (could not keep due to cultural pressure most likely), so that our enemies would not have access to pentagon. And Santiago was already bombarded and known to have few troops, so we decided to hit that too before we would make peace with B.
Was able to take Toledo with two losses and Santiago with just one, IIRC. Our troops are pretty well promoted, so they do nicely on the attack.
We have a huge naval stack and 22 good units off the coast of Madrid, and Istanbul has only four defenders now.

Look back at some recent posts and we have an idea of what military M has. And he has 4 casings and 3 thrusters built. Only way to keep M from launching is to kill him. Right now he has a big stack in Madrid, and fewer in his other cites. I think we can take three near Carthage, raze Istanbul from the sea, and maybe even have enough troops left to raze some other cites by sea(Chicago?).
We keep a few near our palace in Carthage, and raze the rest. We ship reinforcements from Mongolia, built tanks every 3-4 turns in Carthage, and I think we overpower M in the long run. It could be long and bloody, but it will stop his space race.
I can now play if you want me to on Sunday afternoon. Maybe saturday afternoon if my cricket game is cancelled which is likely considering the rain. Look at the latest save and my previous post. Let us know if you see this plan in the latest save. If it is not clear to you how we (or at least I) envision this operation against M, then maybe someone else should play until the initial sneak attack. That has to be done very precisely for maximum effect. After the initial strike, it will be more routine warfare.
Mech infantry are gunpowder units, not armor. I sometimes forget that. So if we promote a tank to pinch, 1.25 of 28 is 35, starting to be a match for mech inf. I think we can make our tanks faster than M can make mech inf. The key is to also have SAM with the tanks to kill the gunships that will want to attack the tanks.
I think that with our scorched earth policy, and sea-based assaults (no counterattacks! :goodjob: ), we are now in the driver's seat of this game. Just look at what we have done to Brennus on the score graph! ;)

But g_s made a good point, I agree we should consider giving away more cities to G. The question is, will that moron ever build Apollo? :lol: We could kill everybody else and he might still refuse to launch before 2050AD. :crazyeye:

Did we get anything from B for peace? For peace we got a lump sum of cash and some gold per turn. He would not trade any techs (tried them all). With the peace, WW became much more managable. That is why we don't have to change to Emancipation just yet, but nice to have it available when we need it.

I'd be happy just to get Istanbul out of it. A fully fortified MI with CG1 is what, 1.5*32 = 48? Add pinch and its 56 against gunpowder. Add a hill and its 64? I will have to look at who is on a hill, who is not.
Really nice job on Toledo dV. I was expecting much heavier losses from those 10 defenders. The first tank move was an accident ... forgot I had him selected an was trying to get a better look at the defenders and sent him by mistake.
But maybe that was the winning move? CG1 marine (dug in IIRC) was the defender of choice, and killed the tank. But that weakened the best defender so much that the rest of the attacks were against weaker defenders, and with some early RNG luck (won a few below 50%), didn't lose many.
The early tank mistake left me with 11 units to attack 10 defenders, (with blitz, 12 strikes to attack 10 defenders). I spent about two minutes between combats selecting the right one to go next, as I had no margin for error (after the first one :blush: )
Against M, we have 1 or 2 MI in a city, then lesser units. The key is to get past the MI. There might be a case to be made to sac just 1 or 2 art, then take a strong unit and hit the MI, so that MI is no longer the top defender, and then takes collat damage from the rest of the art. Otherwise, the one MI might still be almost full strength after the art barrage. Maybe this is a tactical item we can design a test sandbox for (hello R1?)

One question is whether we want to bother trying to hit Izmir? Or just focus on Olmec and Diyar? And if Izmir, hold or raze?
What I like about a strike on Izmir and Diyar is that we can hit them with land tanks and sea units on the same turn we declare and hit Istanbul. If M has reserves in hand, Izmir might get a fast counterattack, so maybe that one should be a raze. We don't need more cities than Olmec and Diyar, what we need is for M to lose cities ;)
On the other hand, while the MI may be strong fortified in cities, but in the open on offense I think we can take them out at a ratio of 1:1 (vs. a pinch tank). So, we can probably defend well, and a marine+SAM+tank squad will make a good pillager in Turkey.

I may not launch any civic changes if there are production items I want to finish for a fast attack.
Also, do we want to place some amphib troops and land tanks in place to hit Izmir? Or just have a larger stack for Diyar and Olmec?
Other than that, no big questions to resolve until the question of pulling the trigger.

Tank vs. MI unpromoted in the open: tank has 29.9% odds. I won 1 of three, and the two surviving MI were hit to about half strength, so a second tank mopped up on each one.
Tank vs MI on hill: tank has 11.5 % odds. Still, three initial tanks damaged each MI enough that a second tank could kill it.
Mehmed has CG2 MI and CG2 marine in Istanbul, and Istanbul is on a hill, with pop 29. It has no wonders! Edirne has pop 26 and is on plains ... maybe we want to backstab there as we should take fewer losses?
I still have more tests to run, but something to think about.

OK, more test results. M' best defender is a CG2 MI. I am simulating fortify bonus by making it CG3. Put 10 of them in a city, on a hill. That way, we can mentally average 10 attacks so we don't base results on an outlier.
Attack with 10 unpromoted tanks. tank at 28, MI at 64 after bonuses. Odds for tank are 0.5%. After the 10 tanks attack, the strenth of the MI are two at 32 (untouched), five at 27.8, one at 23.7, and two at 19.5. The MI takes out 29 HP per strike, the tank only 13 HP per strike.
Follow up with 10 more unpromoted tanks. Odds are 2% attacking a 27.8 MI
At end, MI are two at 23.7, 6 at 19.5, one at 11.2 and one at 10.2.
10 more unpromoted tanks go in. We kill two MI. 20% odds vs. 19.5 strength MI, 47.5% odds vs. 14.7 strenght MI. Left are one at 15, one at 14.7, one at 11.2, one at 10.6, one at 10.2, two at 6.1, and one at 0.6.
It takes me exactly 10 more unpromoted tanks to take the city. 40 units needed, I have 10 left, lost 30 to kill 10 strong defenders.
Coming next: same simulation using pinch tanks, and using collat damage tanks. Which promotion kills faster with fewer losses?
Then simulate 10 artillery, with and with out either CR or barrage promotions. Is an art wave the best first wave? Or are barrage tanks better?
Finally, will simulate infantry and marine attacks. How weak do the MI need to be for the foot to be effective?

10 pinch tanks attack. Odds are 0.9%, almost twice the odds unpromoted
We take 14 HP per strike, they take 28 per strike, not much improvement.
After first ten, MI left are two at 32, 5 at 27.5, 1 at 23.0, 2 at 18.6, only marginally better than round 1 unpromoted.
Round two: Pinch tank as 3.5% odds against a 27.5 CG3 MI on hill. It is 19% vs. 23.0, 42% at 18.6 (saw this in round 3) and 82% at 14.1.
End round two: two at 23.0, 5 at 18.6, 2 at 14.1, 1 at 8.6, still not much better than after second round of unpromoted. But at the current defender strength, the pinch has good odds in round three.
Round three we are attacking at 42% and 82% odds. We kill 5 (vs 2 killed round three no promotions), lose 5. Left defending are one at 13.4, two at 9.0, one at 8.6, one at 3.8.
Round four, five more tanks kill the five weak defenders.
Needed 35 pinch tanks to kill 10 CG3 MI on hill, lost 25 to kill 10. Compare to needed 40 unpromoted, lost 30.
Next ... are barrage tanks better?

Still, we killed one, and left are one at 18.6, one at 15.4, two at 14.1, one at 9.6, one at 8.6, one at 5.1, one at 0.6 and one at 0.3.
Round three ... still no additional collat (makes sense here, all below half). Nine strike kill all nine left.
Needed 29 units, lost 19 to kill the 10. Beats the pinch by a mile (needed 35, lost 25).
I am going to test barrage first 10 followed by unpromoted ... see if that comes out the same as all collat damage ... is the no collat in round two real?
Then I'll sim first 10 collat, next 10 pinch and see how that goes.

Now we don't capture in round three ... lose 4 tanks (23 losses), left is one at 5.1, one at 4.5 and one at 0.3. We have 7 surviving wounded tanks. Build 3 more, they take in round four. Needed 33 strikes, lost 23.

Now will try 12 and 18 (less than 10 barrage seems unlikely to be better).

Yes ... this time it took 31 strikes and 21 losses. it depends on how the collat damage distributes ... if a few are hit very low, and others are not hit, then the stong defenders mean it takes more strikes. If collat damage hits all more evenly, we win with fewer strikes.
Looks like for single promoted tanks, to take out the 10 MI on hill at CG3, need 29 +/- 2 strikes and expect to lose 19 +/- 2. 10 to 15 barrage, then pinch.
Next ... double promoted tanks.

We can take the eastern 2 cities and raze the 1 north of Utica, and raze either Bursa or Edrine, then just dig in and try to out produce him for a while and counter attack his push on Atlanta. This might be enough to let Izzy break free, and let us catch up on tech a bit.
I haven't looked very closely, is there ANY tech we could research and trade at this point?

This is purely land assault. Sea simulation to come later ...
Here is the basic setup I am working off of ... its pretty primitive. I want to simulate one CG3 MI in 10 cities next ... how many tanks on average to kill one? How many marines, how many infantry (since some have amphib, the land sim covers them as well).
If we want to give Florence, New Nidaros, Tiflis and Hithaibu to G, we might want to aggressively whip them to tiny now (make units to hit M), retreat our forces, and leave a trail of workers to lead G to them (maybe he'll do something smart with them, like mine the gold? :rolleyes: ). Delay the revolution for now, do it when the WW from M gets bad.
Ankara has Versailles ... so if we take and hold that, we might want to keep some of M's big cities ... then we could even give all of Mogolia to G after M is dead. Then take over Izzy, put new FP in Spain, and go kill B. Win or not, sounds like fun! :goodjob:

I fell quite good that with Bar2 art and Pinch+CR1 tanks in a 50-50 mix, we can take on the MI. If we have a third promotion when built, I'd say Bar3 the art, and Pinch + CR2 the tanks. Bring a few SAM to hold off the gunships, and Marines as general defense, and we are good.
Next chapter ... what does it take to kill a solo CG3 MI on a hill? That is more like what we face, and barrage will not help us there!

Set up 9 cities on hills, one CG3 MI in each. Parked five pinch+CR1 (humor me, it was before I found my goof :lol: ) outside each ... how many does it take to kill a lone CG3 MI?

da_Vinci Jul 15, 2007, 12:30 AM Prince da Vinci look out from the bridge of his flagship, the GSS Sea Gypsy. "It is good to be back in home waters", he thinks to himself, "but there is no time to rest, as we must sail east to rid the home waters of Mehmed's maurading destroyers."
It has been an eventful trip home. After taking the helm of the fleet from King Ronnie the First, after the King's spectacular campaign in Celtia, there was the siege of Toledo, and the storming of Santiago. Both those cities are in ruins, and with them the Pentagon. "One less military asset in the hands or our enemies" the prince says to himself.
After peace with Brennus, the growing power of Mehmed needed to be checked. The Toledo army was picked up on the shore, and supplemented with a few units from former Mongolia. Then the task force steamed south, with Edirne in its sights. Built on flat ground, the assault should be easy. At the same time, a second naval task force was assembled in Thapsus. Its target: the cities of Olmec and Diyarbakir.
In 1888 all was ready, and the invasion begun. Erdine fell on the first turn and was razed. Diyarnakir fell that turn as well, and was added to our empire. Task Force Beta continued, with land support, on to capture and hold Olmec, and to capture and raze Marsin, which had been crowding Utica.
And what of Task Force Alpha, after the razing of Edirne? The scout north of Madrid had noted that now Mehmed has modern armour! The window of opportunity was closing. In spectacular fashion, Task Force Alpha stormed and razed Chicago, Samsum, Malatya, and Izmir. Every Turkish southern coastal city east of Bursa has been destroyed! The soft underbelly of Mehmed's empire has been gutted!
And what of Gandhi? He has sent infantry and artillery to our northern border. Just as well, as we need to give him more cities. Gandhi took Tiflis, and was allowed to take New Nidaros. Ships were whipped in Florence in preparation of surrendering that city as well.
Those ships constitute Task Force Gamma, northwest of Chehalis, where they confront two of Mehmed's Battleships.
The prince is satisfied. After this operation, the power of Gypsalia is a match for any nation on the earth.
Mehmed has modern armour. So far, only see them in Madrid. He sent a stack of 6 gunships toward Atlanta. I expected this, and had upgraded several of our lesser infantry to SAM, and repulsed that pretty easily.
I did not revolt yet ... might be time for that about now, as WW getting big. Decided not to lock up with G, but rather retreat and let him take two minor cities. Do be sure that we protect our oil resource SE of Florence, as it is our only one until we take Mehmed's!
The AI clearly can't handle our seaborn hit and run! Task Force Beta is poised to raze Antalya (pop 1, west of Atlanta), and move on to raze Kayseri (pop 8), which is Mehmed's only oil resource! Unless he is getting some in trade.
I think there are Turkish destroyers south of Ning-Hsia, in the fog. The might pop up and hit our clad on the nets. Fine with me, then our destroyers can kill them easily!
I have kept some tanks at home given G's newfound courage. Some could start heading west ... use a transport from Task Force Alpha.
Ankara has Versailles, so we could potentially keep that and some of M's other big cites at the end, to further expand our empire and run away from G!
Always keep SAMs with armour, as M seems fond of his gunships. Keep stacks small, so that art can't kill too many at once.
