Unpredicted family "stuff" :-( Anyway congrats Methos, and zyxy, if possible skip me until the 23. From what I have just looked, not many players are still in. I'll come back bigger and stronger, I think (hope). Game-wise, situation is tough, but not desperate, so let's keep it up Smurkz :) The situation is not desperate at all, it's fun, except on the player front. @Niklas: of course it would be a great idea if you stepped in, and not just for the whip. Yeah, and I need to use the whip more :D. New roster: we're down to three players it seems: Methos, Eldar and me. Semolina hasn't posted for a while, Deaf Dolphin dropped out, and unkle is skipped until Monday. So Methos or Eldar, if you want to play: first to post gets it. Turn 1 (211), 665 AD Uppsala -> Axeman (what to do there ? A forge maybe, for hapiness...). Treazure Sword->Sword. ST Caravel->Worker. Turn 2 (212), 680 AD We learn Drama. I set research to Music for the free artist (lightbulbing maybe) and trade value. On a side note I see that Ghandi already has it... So I switch to CS since Bersekers and Bureaucracy could change stuff. We grab in trades: - Construction from Brennus (Cats) - Monarchy+40 from Hannibal (immediate switch to HR) - 190 gold from Khan who fears we are becoming.... too advanced. That's not fair :-( (Side note to myself, I should have done the trades with Khan first...). Turn 3 (213), 695 AD We meet Washigton. Well he meet us and I still do not know how. He is mad, and not will to trade or OB. Too bad we need partners... Confucianism spread in Trezure, which is fine, it's GW religion. Should we switch to improve relations and start a new trading partner ? I'll play some more turns before asking everyone the question. Turn 4 (214), 710 AD Hannibal has circumnavigate the globe. I start Cats in ST and Vahalla. Turn 5 (215), 725 AD Wow. Genghis asks for 170 gold. I refuse, and war it is :-( It seems I am not yet accustomed to Warlords-like AI plying style... I was hoping to get few turns before that... I stop here for some discussions, but here are my thoughts (that will be put into moves tomorrow): * We can strike hime with our current force, but we should beware Gandhi if we drop too much on the Northern borders. * I would kill asap the 2 chariots North to avoid pillage * Do we want to wait for the Cats to be available before we attack towns ? Probably, since LB fortified are a pain. So I would kill troops and still workers if possible before the Cats can bombard. * Uppsalla needs to be defended. The save zyxy Apr 28, 2007, 06:32 AM Alright, things are heating up! I agree we should play defensive for a while. Kill the chariots with troops from Valhalla and shore up the defenses of Uppsala (fast units from Treazure can get there in two turns, whihc hopefully is fast enough). Last time I checked the defenses of Samarquand were fairly weak and I think this should be our first target, but rather with than without catapults. Do we want to keep Samarquand? It misses the northern gems but catches a fish... It would also be good to pillage the Mongol horses (they have only one source I think) and to protect our cottages on the border. Good trade decisions! And I would have made the same decision vs the Mongols. Washington has bad relations with everyone, so he will hopefully not be trading with anyone. I would sell or gift drama to him in the hope that he will like us enough to make a deal for Optics. Ghandi has bad relations too, btw. The single engineer in Valhalla seems not so useful. Genghis has 2 horses sources, so pillaging one is not enough. Second one is deep into Genghis territory. Moving troops towards Uppsalla, keeping some around Treazure. Whipping the caravel in Nidaros (this city is not growing fast enough....) Trying the Drama trick with Washington. Gifting it. He agrees for OB, but would not trade (yet ?) for something interesting... Turn 6 (216), 740 AD Our Caravel finally discovers... Isabella, who as usual is not willing to trade anything with us. Mfff... Some troop movement towards Upsalla. I'll start pillaging soon. Cats are on their way, Genghis is still not making any moves. I fear Ghandhi much more... Turn 7 (217), 755 AD Bad news: Genghis converts to Hinduism, like Brennus... Starting some pillage with our fast units. Samarqand is defended with only one longbow :eek: Well. Hurry up cats. Vahalla cat->cat. On the bad news side again, Washington has learned Optics. When things heat up, they heat up :( Turn 8 (218), 770 AD We meet Mehmet. He is a nice guy, OB and I trade him corn for 6gpt. He his bouddhist, as Isabella and Brennus. I'd like Boudhism to spread in our land... After a long chat, we agree on Optics for Currency+Mono+30g. No way of getting Feud, which would have made CS faster. Currency should improve our research rate by getting some more Trade routes. Turn 9 (219), 785 AD Real stuf starts. We lost a chariot and an HA to an invading Mongolian force (2-2) composed of 4 Kheshiks. Stopping there for some inputs and thoughts. The save * I started some Spearmen (How could I have not thought about that earlier....) * We can upgrade the lone warrior to spearman (at least one) * We need to remove our workers probably. * I do not think they stand a chance in Upsalla but did not make the calculations. A spear or two would have been tremedous helps... zyxy Apr 30, 2007, 05:40 AM Yeah, we should have thought of spears... Mongols have CS and Machinery, so we can expect maces very soon. I think we need to attack Samarquand asap. Against one longbow we could start with 1-2 cats and some sword cover. Perhaps pillage the road to Samarquand to slow down reinforcements. Mongols might wait a bit to heal their Keshiks and hopefully we can make peace soon. All our troops seem to be heading down south, though... EDIT: 3 combat 1, CR 1 swords have about 95% chance to defeat 1 fully fortified CG 1 longbow in a city with 20% defense, I think. Odds improve slightly if we prebombard. Four swords have 99% chance. The worker farming near Uppsala probably needs to stop and run away. The warrior south of Nidaros perhaps needs to move up north to be out of range - no point in sacrificing him for nothing. Perhaps give one or two of the swords in Uppsala a combat II for better defense? Turn 9 (219), 785 AD Reordering some productions, preparing next moves. Sending 2 Swords and an Axe towards Samarquand. Cats should arrive soon. A spear should be whippable in Upssala next turn if required. Workers are stopped to be able to flee. SW of treazure is protected. Turn 10 (220), 800 AD Our warrior is killed by a longbow near Nidaros (2-3). Keshiks move back except one which seems to move to Samarqand. Trading with Brennus is reopened, I take Gold for 8gpt (better than Silk for now I think). Movement towards Samarqand, and some defense. Turn 11 (221), 815 AD As expected the AI move the Keshik towards Samarqand, which is a good move... We are facing a bad fight. For many reasons (as getting a spear from Treazure next turn and not willing to loose a Cat), I do not engage and move to a jungle place. Turn 12 (222), 830 AD No fight. I should be starting in 2 turns. Turn 13 (223), 845 AD 3 Keshiks in Upssalla. I whip the spear and upgrade what is upgradable. 2 Longbows also on their way.... Next turn is critical. I'll attack then. We have 1 cat, 1 spear, 2 Swords and an Axe. Another Sword and 2 cats are arriving next turn. Upsalla should be fine (I hope....). Turn 14 (224), 860 AD We lost one sword in Upssala... (2-4). One bombing, but we do not have yet the possibility of taking the city... I have to wait, hoping that Upssala will hold (which should be doable with the new spear...). Turn 15 (225), 875 AD No attack in Upssala, 1 Keshisk moving towards Nidaros ? Bombing (down to 8%) and with 3 swords, 1 Axe and a spear, I attack. We lost our 2 first battles (2-6), and the Longbow is still not touched :cry: I stop and wait for some more troops... But I think we are in a reaaaaaly bad situation :( I wanted to enforce the victory for a quicke peace, but was unlucky (or a bad player, probably....). And to get even better a great general is born in Karakorum :cry: Do we have a good warmonger with some better options ? Don't want to make more bad choices.... Next player :( sorry for that. These are the options I know of: Merge him as a superspecialist where he'll grant all units +2 XP He can be used to grant 20 XP (spread out) to the units on the same tile as he is I might as well list what I was doing: I have a small force heading south of Samarqand towards a possible city located near some gold. I'm not really excited about the location, but it's the only place where I'm fairly certain GK has a city. I'm sending our chariot into Mongolian lands for some intel. We have no idea what his empire looks like, so it makes planning an invasion extremely difficult. I'm fairly certain this unit will get killed fairly quickly, but hopefully he can learn something before he does. We suck technologically. Izzy is the only one who needs a tech we have and she isn't willing to trade anything. We're currently researching a tech that everyone already has, meaning we're not gaining a trade possibility. If it wasn't for the fact CS is very beneficial for us, I'd say drop it and research something else. We need to research something the AI's don't have. Research-wise I thought CS is really badly needed. But I agree next research needs to be something tradable. I really was thinking about switching to a religion that would help us, trade-wise... If you did join the GG to a unit: - The unit gets free upgrades (v. good). - The unit doesn't lose any XP when it is upgraded. - The unit gets access to "special" promotions. - As already mentioned, 20 XPs are spread evenly amongst all the units on a tile as a one-time bonus. However the +2 XPs from a single city means we can run Org Rel and still have a city producing 5XP units. Valhalla seems to be our best production centre right now, but ST will improve once we switch to Bureaucracy, so I would choose either Valhalla or ST. This particular unit gets upgrades free of cost, some special promos, and doesn't lose XP when upgrading (as Eldar listed). The 20 extra XP are divided among all the units on the tile at the moment you attach the GG. I think that attaching the GG to a unit gives a large immediate boost to our forces, whereas joining him to a city gives a smaller but long term boost. I really don't know what's best. Otherwise maybe leave OR. I would like to stay on the nice side of all the overseas AI, at leats to the extent that they will trade techs to us. It is looking better on the war front. Ghengis will not accept peace unless we give up Tabriz, but I think we don't need peace now. Ghengis is sending < 1 knight per turn, and our pikes typically win. We can keep the pressure on and take more cities with a combined arms stack of berserkers, cats and pikes, possibly with crossbows in the mix. This should work well at least until rifles, which are a long ways off. I would like to take the town SE of Uppsala, and maybe more (Karakorum would be a great GP town IIRC), depending on the maintenance costs. Make sure to keep pikes along the border to defend against knight incursions. Knights don't get defensive bonus, so attacking is often an option. Also, I would like to get some tech(s) in peace. Ghengis is behind the others, and he might give us the leg up that we need. Then, when peace breaks out we build up and strike again. In order to survive, we need to eliminate Ghengis IMO. Things are not so good on the research front. I would head for universities, unless a good trading option presents itself. Uppsala would be a great commerce center (cottages!) and also a good FP location. I think we should start working on that. There's a GE in Treazure. I don't know what to do with him. I decided to push Genghis into peace, so I sent some forces into his territory to force the issue. Two knights sneaked past me and hit Tabriz and the ole girl fell. Maybe we can even get Astro? I would lower research to 10%, some cash could be handy. (Also we can trade with cash-heavy civs first. It will be very important to trade in the right order in order to get maximum benefit). It should be possible to get all visible techs and money, and perhaps even more (on the next turn). - Press, Astro, Nationalism and Music are not known to all and hence might have trade value on the next turn. - It seems like Divine Right is around but Versailles has not been built. And we have a GE hanging about. Hmm, Uppsala maybe? - Combat log shows we lose a lot of berserks against knights. Are they not defended by pikes? - Good news on Tabriz! Maybe it's time to take our gains for the moment and stop the fighting? - Khan will not sign peace for some reason, but he will sign a cease fire. Not sure what that does, because I never used it. I suppose it's a peace treaty that can be cancelled at all times? So it might give us a short breathing space needed to do some research & trading, and get back into the game.
