View Full Version : Arab Spearmen (24 Feb 2007)
embryodead Feb 23, 2007, 07:40 PM Two Arab/eastern spearmen from MEM (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=203676). Thanks to Kinboat & utahjazz7 for PDM & stuff. Those have mostly the same animations as my previous spearmen, just different default pose. Again, the second spearman's INI file refers to sounds from the first one, keep that in mind if you're gonna use Spearman 2 separately.
Eastern Spearman 1 (shield based on Early Middle Ages Arab design)

Lord Cooper Feb 23, 2007, 07:52 PM great unit! :goodjob:
Partizanac Feb 23, 2007, 08:17 PM Once again! great work!
odintheking Feb 23, 2007, 10:09 PM Man, these are awesome. You rock, dude!
Miles Teg Feb 23, 2007, 10:48 PM Ooh:drool:
Excellent work. I can picture some uses for the second, although I cant seem to find a use for pajama boy.
Plotinus Feb 24, 2007, 12:15 AM Excellent. I will very probably have a use at least for the first one, even if he's in his pyjamas.
Civinator Feb 24, 2007, 12:20 AM even if he's in his pyjamas.
:rotfl:
These are great units. Thank you very much embryodead.
Cimbri Feb 24, 2007, 04:05 AM Woah. Very nice units.
As for use, the first one can be an Abna Spearman. The second can be a Muttawi'ah or Qangli Spearman. Or perhaps also, though they used javelins, a Daylami Ghulam (mercenary).
CC-2224 Feb 24, 2007, 07:23 AM Very, very nice job, ED!
Synsensa Feb 24, 2007, 07:40 AM I never knew Arabs fought in toddler polka dot PJs and Striped ones :p
Nice units however, will you be making alternative textures for it?
Gen. Rommel Feb 24, 2007, 09:31 AM Excellent units! I see this filling the spearman spot for my middle eastern cvilizations as a flavour unit. Keep up the pimpin' work. :goodjob:
embryodead Feb 24, 2007, 09:50 AM I never knew Arabs fought in toddler polka dot PJs and Striped ones :p
It's actually a middle-eastern pattern, and contrary to popular belief, they didn't live only in a desert and wear all white. Both Persians and Arabs dyed and decorated their clothes a lot, probably a lot more than Europeans.
Nice units however, will you be making alternative textures for it?
No, why?
Thanks for all the comments though, even the pyjamas ;)
Rob (R8XFT) Feb 24, 2007, 09:52 AM Thanks, these are terrific  !!
Synsensa Feb 24, 2007, 10:05 AM No, why?
Maybe add a texture which works with the popular belief thing?
embryodead Feb 24, 2007, 10:28 AM There was a preview posted a month ago for a reason. I'm not remaking it now because you don't like the clothes.
Ozymandias Feb 24, 2007, 11:03 AM Mighty fine work  And the non-"Arab-white-clothing" is very nice indeed.
Best,
Oz

I never said I didn't like it, don't make accusations.
BadKharma Feb 24, 2007, 03:13 PM Great job I like both these spearmen. They will make excellent flavour units.
Yoda Power Feb 26, 2007, 06:53 AM Superb job ED, I especially like the second one. :)
W.i.n.t.e.r Feb 26, 2007, 10:59 AM Nice and crisp :) they are both lovely !!! Though I'll most likely use them both as spearman flavours - one for the Arabs... the other one for hmmm- the Turks, perhaps.... Any chance there will be more units with that spiked helmet- like Horsemen/Knights (hint hint :mischief: ) ??
Grandraem Feb 27, 2007, 04:03 PM Looks great. You're animations are always excellent and the units look beautiful.:goodjob:
Hrafnkell Feb 28, 2007, 06:46 AM They're beautiful, Embryodead! I love their duds!
Mithadan Mar 04, 2007, 10:57 PM They look absolutely sweet, embryodead. I love 'em to bits.
As to pajamas, there was some sweet camo recent Syrian (?) commandos wore, that was pretty pajamalike: pink with small, purple silouhettes (sp?) of tanks, helicopters and stuff providing the camouflage effect (arguable, at best). That's awesome. As for use, the first one can be an Abna Spearman. The second can be a Muttawi'ah or Qangli Spearman. Or perhaps also, though they used javelins, a Daylami Ghulam (mercenary).Cimbri, could you provide an ignoramus like myself with some info on these guys? Like aproximate dates, for instance? They'd make great names for the units, but it would be silly for me to use the names and stick them in the wrong century, for instance! :D
Cimbri Mar 05, 2007, 09:07 AM That's awesome.Cimbri, could you provide an ignoramus like myself with some info on these guys? Like aproximate dates, for instance? They'd make great names for the units, but it would be silly for me to use the names and stick them in the wrong century, for instance! :D Sure. :)
The Abna were an Abbasid military unit. Once the core of their force from Khurasan in Iran, they later evolved into the guard infantry of the Abbasid Caliphate in Iraq. Come to think of it, perhaps the name would be better for the second unit. That places the second unit in the Abbasid age, from 750 to 1258 AD.
Ahdath Spearman would be a more generic term for the first unit. The Ahdath were the city militia. Muttawi'ah (voulenteers) could also be used, and that is perhaps even more generic. I’d say that their time period would be 632 AD and up. For a crusader era scenario, Ahdath would be a good name.
Mithadan Mar 11, 2007, 07:46 PM Thanks, man!
Bungus Mar 13, 2007, 01:10 AM Hole plugged. Muchos gracias
