View Full Version : Term 1 Election Poll - Designated Player Pool
ravensfire Feb 24, 2007, 06:49 PM Please vote for the citizens you feel would be capable Designated Players for this term.
THIS IS A MULTIPLE CHOICE POLL!
You are encouraged to vote for ALL candidates that you feel will be a capable Designated Player!
Candidates:
dutchfire
Methos
Ravensfire
GeorgeOP
Chieftess
Falcon02
DaveShack
CivGeneral
Shattered
Hyronymus
All candidates receiving a vote from more than 60% of the citizens that vote in the poll will be included in the Designated Player pool for Term 1.
Poll options:
-- Private
-- 3 days duration
-- Multiple choice
CivGeneral Feb 24, 2007, 07:09 PM Why should you consider CivGeneral to be an excellent choice for the Designated Player Pool?
I can able to multi-task between Civ4, The forum itself, and a word program such as MS Word (for logs and reports). All while running Civilization 4 in windowed mode
I have a general feel for playing the game. Even though I have been away for a while from the Demogame. I know the ins and outs of what goes on with on being a Designated Player.
I am able to provide screenshots and other information tidbits for non-Windows OS citizens.
Most importantly, I am running with a fresh start in a fresh new game :)
Joe Harker Feb 24, 2007, 07:25 PM why have u put an abstain option
"yes i will vote for all of them but i might as well abstain as well"
Chieftess Feb 24, 2007, 08:12 PM why have u put an abstain option
"yes i will vote for all of them but i might as well abstain as well"
It's required so that us old folks don't blow a fuse. :D
All polls need "Abstain", even multi-choice ones. It's been semi-traditional throughout the demogame. Abstain even won a position, once, too!
Joe Harker Feb 24, 2007, 08:15 PM cool, i bet that must of been fun, it would be like that futurama when they declare war on the neutrals
GeorgeOP Feb 24, 2007, 10:17 PM Geez, I didn't think I would have to campaign for DPing. When was the last time someone was not elected to the pool?
Chieftess Feb 24, 2007, 10:49 PM Geez, I didn't think I would have to campaign for DPing. When was the last time someone was not elected to the pool?
A couple of people. DP'ing shouldn't really be a position that you have to campaign for. It was originally designed, atleast I think, for more people to have a chance at playing the save. If it turns into a competition, we might as well move back to the old Chain of Command then, or atleast have term limits for the DP.
DaveShack Feb 24, 2007, 11:08 PM Interesting voting pattern this time. It's been long enough since there was real activity in the last game that it's somewhat of a mystery what people would base withholding their votes on.
The 4th place and after folks have a weird kind of advantage, since there is more to do later in the game.
dutchfire Feb 25, 2007, 11:39 AM I voted for everyone, including abstain, but DaveShack. He was tied with me for most votes, and I'd like to win this election :p So no offence Dave.
Chieftess Feb 25, 2007, 11:44 AM I voted for everyone, including abstain, but DaveShack. He was tied with me for most votes, and I'd like to win this election :p So no offence Dave.
There's no one "winner" in this election. It's everyone who has 50% or more of the vote.
Hyronymus Feb 25, 2007, 11:58 AM There's no one "winner" in this election. It's everyone who has 50% or more of the vote.
No, 60%. Read the initial post ;).
dutchfire Feb 25, 2007, 12:09 PM There's no one "winner" in this election. It's everyone who has 50% or more of the vote.
Don't we play in order of most votes first? Or was that last game? :crazyeye:
edit:
Each candidate that receives a vote from more than 60% of the citizens that vote in the poll will be accepted as a DP for that term. The Election Office will put together a list of the Designated Players, ordered by the number of votes in support for that term. In the event of a tie, the order of posting in the nomination thread will be used. All DPs that actually ran a game session in the previous term will be put below those that did not, regardless of the number of votes. This list will determine the order that the DPs will be used for game sessions. If there are more game sessions than DPs, start again from the top of the list.
DaveShack Feb 25, 2007, 12:22 PM I voted for everyone, including abstain, but DaveShack. He was tied with me for most votes, and I'd like to win this election :p So no offence Dave.
Thanks, I don't want to create the game.
Chieftess Feb 25, 2007, 12:26 PM Thanks, I don't want to create the game.
:rotfl:
(for all of the new members, whenever Daveshack starts a demogame, he tends to forget a setting, or choose the wrong map size. We actually played 10-20 turns of a game before realizing it was too small when I decided to zoom out).
Octavian X Feb 25, 2007, 10:45 PM So I wonder - who's abstaining in this multiple-choice poll? Right now, dutchfire has 29 votes - the most of any candidate. 6 people have voted abstain. There have been 32 total voters. Someone people out there, then, have been voting both for certain candidates and abstaining from the poll at the same time. :crazyeye:
We might need to rework the explanation of how the voting works...

And I think people are only voting for one person, too. That's why I don't really like this type of poll. Maybe we should split out the polls, like X individual DP Pool polls.

Some people just like to check as many boxes as possible :D
I agree with Chieftess though, it wouldn't be fair if people didn't make the 60% because some people didn't vote correctly. (If that was the case)
DaveShack Feb 26, 2007, 01:46 PM From the unedited initial post:
THIS IS A MULTIPLE CHOICE POLL!
You are encouraged to vote for ALL candidates that you feel will be a capable Designated Player!
I think someone would have to be voting without ever reading the thread to miss this.
I voted for all but one. The one I withheld my vote from is a veteran player other than CivGeneral. I won't comment further on who or why, nor on why I mention that I voted for CG. :)
dutchfire Feb 26, 2007, 02:07 PM All candidates receiving a vote from more than 60% of the citizens that vote in the poll will be included in the Designated Player pool for Term 1.
4 candidates need 1 more vote, 1 (Hyronymus) needs 9 more (I fear he's not going to make it). Isn't 60% a bit though?
ravensfire Feb 26, 2007, 02:46 PM It is a bit tougher than it used to be, but consider that we're talking about the person that is playing the save. Most DP's will do quite well, and will easily get the needed support. We've got some newer players that people just don't know enough about that are struggling. Given the active participation that Hyronymus has shown, I am disappointed in the citizens response. I'm quite confident that next term he will have no problem if he keeps his posting up.
I will give just about any first time person the benefit of the doubt. Someone had to give me a chance, why shouldn't I return the favor? There are a few people that I did not vote for due to past performance. DP's are there to follow legal instructions, even if they don't agree with them. Some on this list have had issues with that. They won't get my vote until I'm confident they've changed.
So if you haven't voted, I strongly urge you to give someone new a chance!

Shattered Feb 26, 2007, 02:48 PM So if you haven't voted, I strongly urge you to give someone new a chance!
Amen to that!

How would you know if they changed if you dont give them the chance that they have changed? In recent times, my mindset has shifted gears to "Actions speak louder than Words". But in the elections, that method is very hard to do because I know that my words mean nothing unless I put into it action. Would you be willing to give someone a chance to prove themself that they have improved and change, even if they had a unflattering performance as a DP in the past? Even the Japanese Proverb in my signature reflects that people do make mistakes and fall but they do get up from it. "Fall Seven times but get up eight" is a strong motivater for me, especialy in this Demogame.

You can give advice as the gameplay progresses. If it's good enough, and you provide personal experience (i.e. succession games, other games, etc.) that worked, then people might notice. When you first started in the Civ4 demogame, you didn't even have the game, and people know you don't have as much experience. Some have more experience than others - some are even lucky enough to have been in the beta and have up to two more years of experience.
GeorgeOP Feb 26, 2007, 05:23 PM I wish people would tell me why they didn't vote for me. Did I do a bad job of DPing, or or was it because I wasn't very active in the creating the rules part. Not knowing why I didn't get the job is worse than the fact I didn't get it. PM me if you have to, I want to know so I can change. This is like getting a review at work without having the ability to see the comments on my review.
And I think I'll challenge this poll because it was too confusing. Return of the hanging chad! (I'm kidding, unlike certain political people, I won't use the courts to overturn the votes.)
Methos Feb 26, 2007, 05:47 PM I agree that it would be nice to know why someone did or didn't vote for me. Knowing the reason helps to see our strengths and weaknesses and is something I'd like to know and learn by. With any luck, I'd like people to PM me and state their reason.
On the other hand I can see why someone wouldn't. It can cause trouble by those who have trouble with constructive criticism, or who have trouble making their criticism sound constructive. I know of a couple I'd like to PM to inform them why I voted for them, but I believe its best to do so after the polls have closed. I considered doing the same to those I didn't vote for, but I hesitate to do so without knowing if they want it or not. I figure everyone likes to hear good things.
DaveShack Feb 26, 2007, 05:48 PM Not knowing why I didn't get the job is worse than the fact I didn't get it.
There are still over 25 hours to go and lots more people registered than have voted, so it's hard to say what will happen.
Shattered Feb 26, 2007, 08:28 PM I know of a couple I'd like to PM to inform them why I voted for them, but I believe its best to do so after the polls have closed. I considered doing the same to those I didn't vote for, but I hesitate to do so without knowing if they want it or not. I figure everyone likes to hear good things.
I would like to know your reasons for voting for me/not voting for me. Your a veteran of this game so anything you could tell me would be appreciated!
Methos Feb 26, 2007, 09:32 PM Your a veteran of this game so anything you could tell me would be appreciated!
Just to clarify, I'm not a veteran of the Demogame. I played maybe two terms of DGI and thats it. A little experienced maybe, but not a veteran.
dutchfire Feb 27, 2007, 02:17 AM I'd like to now why so many people voted for me.
Falcon02 Feb 27, 2007, 02:19 AM I'd like to now why so many people voted for me.
You're well loved...
Chieftess Feb 27, 2007, 06:09 AM Just to clarify, I'm not a veteran of the Demogame. I played maybe two terms of DGI and thats it. A little experienced maybe, but not a veteran.
I'm a veteran of the game, and I've also tested the game as it was being made, too - almost 2 years before it was released.
ordinaryguy Feb 27, 2007, 06:24 AM I'd like to now why so many people voted for me.
Because they feel that you are reliable? :)
CivGeneral Feb 27, 2007, 03:51 PM I'd like to now why so many people voted for me.
Because you are loved by millions around the globe ;).
ice2k4 Feb 27, 2007, 04:56 PM Well msot of the people who were just under the cut-off have been pushed above 60%, just have to get Hyronymus about 8% more.
DaveShack Feb 27, 2007, 05:31 PM We'd need 8 more voters, if my algebra skills are still sharp. Sadly, I doubt there will be that many.
CivGeneral Feb 27, 2007, 08:23 PM Well msot of the people who were just under the cut-off have been pushed above 60%, just have to get Hyronymus about 8% more.
I will have to admit, I thought that I would not make it within the 60% region after seeing my slot rise up to 60 then fall to 50 and then back up to 60.
dutchfire Feb 28, 2007, 09:31 AM dutchfire 36 92.31%
Methos 29 74.36%
Ravensfire 33 84.62%
GeorgeOP 24 61.54%
Chieftess 28 71.79%
Falcon02 25 64.10%
DaveShack 31 79.49%
CivGeneral 24 61.54%
Shattered 24 61.54%
Hyronymus 21 53.85%
Abstain 6 15.38%
I won [party]
Congrats to everyone who got elected!
And Hyronymus, please try again next time, if 3 more people who voted against you had voted for you, you'd have the required percentage too.
So, what's next? Chieftain setting up the thread?
ravensfire Feb 28, 2007, 09:56 AM Congratulations to dutchfire, methos, Ravensfire, GeorgeOP, Chieftess, Falcon02, DaveShack, CivGeneral and Shattered who all qualified for the Designated Player pool!
The initial DP order is: dutchfire
Ravensfire
DaveShack
Methos
Chieftess
Falcon02
GeorgeOP
CivGeneral
Shattered
-- Ravensfire, Election Officer
Hyronymus Feb 28, 2007, 02:55 PM I'll try again, dutchfire, don't worry ;). Against experienced demog ame players I didn't think a total newcomer would stand much chance so I'm thrilled with the 53.85% I received :). Good luck to everyone who did make it (and be warned: I'll have my eyes on you :D).
