Im not going to bother writing this creatively, because of lack of time today, but it was a cool enough game that I feel like sharing it anyways.
Standard size map (default settings)
Regent Diff
Customized rules (lethal bombardment from everything except some of the early ships, +hp on armored units and ships, resources dont move around)
I was the French and started out on the larger of two continents with the Americans, the English, and the Indians. On the other continent the Zulu and Germans started.
The game developed fairly uniquely. The four civs on my continent (including me) ended up in a balance of power that I havent really seen in any of my games yet (not that lasts the whole game). I controlled the middle connection, but I stayed at peace with everyone else, and kept right of passage agreements ussually.
The zulu conquered their continent (of course), but lagged just far enough behind in tech to not be a real threat to anyone on my continent. The germans of course, were gone :)
The map therefore looked something like this:
+++++++ +++++++++++++++++
+ ZULU + + France + India +
+ LAND + + + +
+ + ++++++++ ++++++++++
+ + ++ + + America+
+ ++ + &+ ++ +
++++ + + + ++++
+England+
++++++
& = American city Between France and England's border
The first war my continent saw was America declaring war on India. Shortly later the zulu declare war on India too, and India buys England on America. In this war, the only land that permanently changed hands was the city on englands border, which the Indians captured due to the right of passage they had with me. France did not participate, because I was going for a space victory at this point. The only rival in this was England which up until this war maintained a very slight tech lead on me due to coppernicus & newtons both :(
The first war had barely ended when England declared war on India. Before long, America entered it too on the side of India. No land changed hands except for the india (formerly american) city on my border with england. England captured it. The war ended abruptly because I put infantry in a line completely blocking passage for englands troops (which would of easily conquered america at this point) Instead the 20+ infantry they had on a beeline for america had to turn back :)
Then the space launch happened. I beat England by turns literally. (they was working on synthetic fibers when I finished laser, and they'd been refusing to trade) The game would of been over then (it was 1950ish), but the turn of the launch the english moved 69 (I counted) mechanized infantry into my territory along with some normal infantry and rifleman. They was too late to stop me, but I couldnt let it go at that.
What followed was world war III in the literal sense. There was no way I could fend off 69 mechanized infantry alone. My army consisted of at that point: 2 carriers loaded with bombers, 3 battleships, 1 submarine, 2 infantry per city, 1 transport, 8 modern armors. The mechanized infantry would reach my border city in 2 turns and begin to overrun me entirely.
The response was what made this game cool :) First, I signed mutual protection packs with every other country in the world that turn. Second, I traded with the zulu for uranium (my old deal had expired), and started producing nukes in 4 cities, and modern armor in the rest. Then I started the war myself by having my carrier based bombers bomb them in my territory. And moved a freebie infantry next to them using my rails. Then used all my saved cash to rush build a nuke. They of course, attacked the infantry the next turn and all the mutual protection packs kicked in. The next turn, I had my nuke and I nuked the stack of 60 mech infantries even though they was in my territory :) THey still razed the city on the border, but enough damage was done that the entire stack was destroyed the next turn :) At the cost of most of my armor though.
The war that followed was the most world war type of war ive ever seen in civ. Every country fielded huge armies (all modern enough to include tanks & bombers). The war went on for 40+ turns before england completely fell. In the course of the war, I was "forced" to use a total of 6 more nukes. Well, really only 1 more was forced, they amassed another stack of 30+ mechanized infantry before we destroyed their resource network :)
There was even a cool grab for land at the end that one would expect at the end of a world war. India founded 2 cites in englands territory. America kept London & one more city. I kept York (for newtons univ + the nearby uranium, but razed the rest of what I took) I founded 3 more cities, america 2 or 3 more.
Thus the game ended (past 2050 by this time), with the french on alpha centauri. The zulu the largest empire on the planet (and with a tech lead due to the war distracting everyone else, though they did land one force of about 8 modern armor that helped greatly, and didnt even get a single city out of it :P). The americans & indians caught up totally in tech from the war (I had given them the tech to build modern armor to help me out), and with more cities than they started with. I lost one well built up city with the iron works in it out of it, but gained access to uranium & aluminum along with about 4 new cities (1 where the old had been for a new iron works). The final score (from the spaceship launch of course) was 951.
Anyways, hope someone enjoys reading an account of a true all out modern war in civ3 :) Maybe next time that happens in one of my games it wont be on a Monday when I dont have time to do it justice with creative writing :)
