View Full Version : Doing well untill 1000AD-1500AD
pompino Feb 28, 2007, 05:04 AM Hello fellow-addicts ;-)
I was wondering if anyone would want to have look at the gamesaves I`ve upped.
The situation is this:
- I play -Prince/Roman/Continent/quick/standard conditions-
- I fight succesfull early wars.
-
- I (think I) have gotten better at city-specialization. (But you can be the judge of that)
The problem is:
Somewhere between 1000AD and 1500AD I start losing (start falling down to 2#, 3# place or worse).
Can't keep up the finance (=techrace) and can`t get myself on top anymore.
I think is has to do with the civics I choose, but any tips `n advise is welcome.

civtrader Feb 28, 2007, 06:57 AM - You have Monarchie and Calendar, why do you not improve all the resources?
- You should build more Mines, at least 3 in every big City (your main mistake i think)
- Your Workers should be working everywhere, not just in one corner
- You have enough space and sweet-water for two/three more cities.
- One (or sometimes two) Point(s) of illnes are sometimes okay, but two ore more points everywhere are too much.
- You should not have unhappy people in your city - exept you want to whip them away soon.
- Civics: In your situation, "heratic rule" (?) ("Erbrecht" in german) would be best.
- Religion: spread it fast, you will need the money.
Good Luck.
PS: Hatshepuh is better than you, maybe open borders with her helps her more than you...
Napalm102 Feb 28, 2007, 07:28 AM I have similar problems, on prince it is about 1000 AD+ that AIs get alphabet and start trading techs like hell, they are also very often in religios groups where everyone likes everyone else.
I think the only way you can maintain advantage here is diplomacy (not for peacefull purposes mind, but to keep AI fighting each other), thats something I just started to explore myself, bribing AIs to attack each other. You have to do that before AI gets alphabet, so that you can bribe AIs with techs.
I'm by no means an expert on CIV4, but I wouldn't worry about being 3rd or 4th on score list, so long as you are level on tech field and have a rock solid empire core that can take and support 10 or so captured cities you are ok for a good war and grabbing a large chunk of your neighbours territory.
Much of that score as I can tell comes from population and territory, and AIs always outexpands you due to the economy bonus, so they practically always larger and you can't do that untill you got that economy up and running and by that time AI got a city in every viable tile that they can, even sometimes on a single tile ocean squares!!
I have a question of my own tho. I usually play on prince/standart map size/epic. I recently started a game on continents map and to make long story short I had only one neighbour and no ability to make contact with other civs till optics, by which time the rest of AIs that "ofcourse" are bunched together on other side of the world have traded all the techs that they can and have like 7 tech lead on you and they all are best buddies too. Is such scenario winable or should you abandon the game if you find yourself in such position?

It's harder but yes it can be winnable. My advice would depend on your stage of the game.
- Beeline to optics for obvious reasons. Trade is not very beneficial with only one trading partner (IMO) so don't worry about going to war (again IMO). Try to bleed him for tech though.
- Try a cultural victory, get cottages well built in three cities and spread religions (you may need to get a couple by planting/capturing cities on the edge of the other continents when you get chance).
With only one neighbour you should be able to defeat them and get sole access to the land, allowing a large empire which can pump out commerce through cottages to catch up. Once you have optics (or get contact another way) keep to a single tech path and hopefully you will be able to trade at some point. At this point techs you have missed should be very cheap and you shouldn't hit the max trade limit for techs, that point in the midgame where nobody wants to give you anything.
Jastrow Feb 28, 2007, 02:32 PM "heratic rule" (?) ("Erbrecht" in german)
To clarify just in case there is confusion... "Erbrecht" is "Hereditary rule".

Actually, isn't it the case that they won't trade tech with you voluntarily if they don't have contact with anyone else? I'm not sure how that affects them giving you tech to end/prevent wars.

This shouldn't be hard. Take their land. Now you have twice as much land as anybody else. Cover it with cottages -- I mean really cover it with cottages -- and get to Democracy, perhaps by way of Liberalism if you think you have time. Emancipate, build the space ship, win. Starting alone is much worse than starting with a single neighbor. You only get 'your' allotment of land. Of course, more neighbors is better yet (you can take some land and trade). But in general, if you can get more land than anyone else reasonably early you should be fine.
peace,
lilnev
