2K building new Civilization

To the surprise of no one, Take-Two reveals that a new entry in Firaxis' legendary strategy series is planned.

In late 2006, Take-Two Interactive spent tens of millions to acquire Firaxis, developer of the Civilization series of strategy games. Given the publisher's investment and the franchise's massive popularity, it was only a matter of time before a new installment was announced.

As it turns out, the time in question was this week. Buried in yesterday's Take-Two earnings report was news that yes, a new Civilization game is planned. The report did not specify whether or not said game would be the inevitable Civilization V or a spin-off like CivCity: Rome. The prospects of a console or portable Civilization title have also been rumored.

The timing of the new product--or products--is also slightly unclear. "Starting in 2008, 2K will have new content based on its Civilization franchise and other products, including both original intellectual property and third-party titles," the company's report read. As of press time, Take-Two reps had not specified whether or not the report meant the company's 2008 fiscal year (November 1, 2007-October 31, 2008) or the 2008 calendar year. The former scenario would leave open the possibility of a new Civilization game coming as soon as this holiday season.

QFT. And for all we know, it could be just another expansion pack, because if it isnt, thats a pretty tight development schedule.

hmmm, I'm not sure, an expansion is possible however I think it may be more a case of a port to the 360 or PS3.

Will they release an expansion to Civ City Rome? I heard it sucked?

There certainly is not a Civ5 coming this year, not unless the game had less than half the development cycle of Civ4. Besides, we would have already heard about the game by now if that were true. Bet your bottom dollar another expansion for Civ4 is on its way though. ("Will it be any good?" becomes the operative question. :))

They didn't actually say when it'd be released, so it could be civ5. But it's more likely that it'll be another expansion.

They say in 2008, which could mean that as soon as this holiday season, or all the way up to the next holiday season

I don't think they'd release Civ V without a second expansion pack for Civ IV.

Two years ago.

I can see another XP coming out, but I understand the desire for a new Civ game from Take Two. I would guess another expansion pack this year, with a full on new Civ game in late 2008.

Heh, to be honest, I was absolutely amazed at Civ 4 in that many ideas I had were put in the game, the only suggestions I could think of would be fixing some of the problems of Civ4's 3d engine.

I would be devastated if they released Civ V any time soon. I love the way that they give us time to really get deep into each civ game, by taking a lot of time between them. Also, I do not think that a game released anytime soon would have had even close to enough time in developement. I remember waiting for cIV like it was yesterday. I think civ 4 still has alot to offer, especially if you get involved in GOTM, HOF, or any mods. I wouldnt want Civ V for quite a while.
