View Full Version : Great People
peter grimes Mar 08, 2007, 12:29 PM Ok - I've compiled a list of all the great people from the cvi4unitinfo.xml file. It was my first foray into 'the guts' of civ4, and I found it pretty interesting. I post it here as a reference for us :)

gbno1fan Mar 08, 2007, 12:41 PM They included Keynes but not Friedman? :nono: What a shame.
Great work on the list, Pete.
DaveMcW Mar 08, 2007, 12:47 PM So does anyone have a list of which great people have been generated ingame? :)
General_W Mar 08, 2007, 02:08 PM Yeah - thanks for that Peter! Very helpful.
I can post a list of Great People later when I get to sit down with the save.
Typo guesses:
Prophet - JEANNE_ARC - shouldn't that be Joan of Arc? Or is this some fancy real french name I'm missing?
Artist - DU_FU - shouldn't this be "DA-FU" ... as in Mr. T's "I pitty Da Fu!" ;)
peter grimes Mar 08, 2007, 02:29 PM I've compiled a list, along with their dates of birth. I've also compiled a list of when Wonders have been produced, and by which team. But that list is on paper at home, so it'll be some hours before I get a chance to post it.
Typo Guesses
Well, I'm not sure about DU_FU ;)
Jeanne_Arc is not the one I was thinking of, but could indeed be a typo. The one that I found was pretty flagrant.
twistlok Mar 08, 2007, 03:27 PM So what happens if we use all the great prophet names? Once they are used are there no more to get?
RegentMan Mar 08, 2007, 03:29 PM Jeanne d'Arc is French for "Joan of Arc." ;)
So what happens if we use all the great prophet names? Once they are used are there no more to get?
The great people are merely named their title then. You'll see "Great Merchant was born in..." instead of an actual name.
peter grimes Mar 08, 2007, 07:56 PM Yeah, it's pretty clear that Jeanne_Arc is supposed to be the person English people know as Jean d'Arc, but what's not clear is what transliterative model the publishers are using. In this case, the idiom seems to alternate between the Francophone and the Anglicized. Whatever - the important thing is that she hasn't been born yet ;)
peter grimes Mar 08, 2007, 08:49 PM Okay - here's the long and short of it:
1120 BC StoneHenge, +2 GP Loco
900 Great LightHouse, +2 GM Piffle
650 Moses (GP)
625 Kashivishi... ,+1 GP Innovia
425 Colossus, +2 GM Aloha
400 Mahariva
300 Harkuf (GM)
275 Zoroaster (GP)
200 Mahobodhi, + 1GP Loco
50 BC Piffle revolt to Caste System
100 AD Merit Ptah (GE)
200 Homer, Aloha
250 Xi Ling Shi (GS)
300 Nabu-Rimanni (GS)
425 Hangin' Gardinz ;), +2 GE Aloha
500 Parthenon +2 GA +50% GP Points all around!!
500? Chuang-Tzu (GP)
??? Ling-Lun (GA)
Now, if anyone has any ideas about how to improve the presentation of this, PLEASE let me know. At the same time, I'm a little unclear about some of my notes: 500 AD is a little sketchy for some reason, so I happened not to note who popped Ling or the Parthenon. Also, I have yet to start an analysis of this data to correlate Great Prophets with Shrines. Also, we need to look into Lightbulbing, using DaveMcW's Startegy article.
peter grimes Mar 09, 2007, 12:13 PM I've played around with the spacing, so that there is a more intuitive sense of the chronology. I don't know if that helps any. Turn 73 1120 BC StoneHenge, +2 GP Loco
t79 900 Great LightHouse, +2 GM Piffle
t89 650 Moses (GP) innovia?
t90 625 Kashivishi... ,+1 GP Innovia
t98 425 Colossus, +2 GM Aloha
t99 400 Mahariva (GP)
t103 300 Harkuf (GM) Piffle from Lighthouse? Doesn't seem to be enough time.
t104 275 Zoroaster (GP) Loco?
t107 200 Mahobodhi, + 1GP Loco
t113 50 BC Piffle revolt to Caste System
t119 100 AD Merit Ptah (GE) I'm guessing he lightbulbed
t123 200 Homer (GA), Aloha
t125 250 Xi Ling Shi (GS) not a GA, as GW surmised, so not from Music
t127 300 Nabu-Rimanni (GS)
t132 425 Hangin' Gardinz , +2 GE Aloha
t135 500 Parthenon +2 GA +50% GP Points all around!!
t135 500? Chuang-Tzu (GP)
??? Ling-Lun (GA)
So there are some things in there I really can't explain - like how on earth did Harkuf generate? There wasn't enough time to do it from the Great Lighthouse, unless I'm missing something.
DaveMcW Mar 09, 2007, 01:13 PM Piffle (philosophical) gets double GP generation, so the Lighthouse is cranks out 4:gp: per turn. Harkuf was born exactly 25 turns later.
peter grimes Mar 09, 2007, 02:25 PM D'oh! That makes perfect sense now. Thanks Dave!

peter grimes Mar 11, 2007, 08:51 AM Paper and Philosophy lightbulbed?.. I didn't think to check that
Thanks again, Dave :)
classical_hero Mar 13, 2007, 07:48 AM How can you find this info? The way how each GP is used.
peter grimes Mar 13, 2007, 09:29 AM You must infer it from other in-game events. When Great Prophet is born, then two turns later, a Shrine is established, you can be pretty certain the Prophet founded the shrine.
Likewise, when a GM is born, and then someone discovers Paper, it's likely that the GM Lightbulbed Paper.
General_W Apr 09, 2007, 02:04 PM Dave (Or Peter?) – maybe you want to keep updating your list of Great People here?
It's really helpful!
780 AD saw the birth of Great Merchant Hanno in Aloha, 820 AD Great Prophet Mo Tzo born in (Innovia? Loco?), and 840 AD saw the birth of Great Scientist Plato in (Piffle?).
Hopefully we can confirm more of this as we go along.

General_W Apr 09, 2007, 03:09 PM Awesome! Thanks Peter!
:salute:
Only thing missing (that I see) is that we know Hanno was used to get Guilds.
DaveMcW Apr 09, 2007, 08:54 PM If Innovia and Aloha are really so buddy-buddy, I think it's more likely they traded for it.
General_W Apr 10, 2007, 11:18 AM Well, I was thinking just the opposite. Makes me wonder if they're not quite so buddy/buddy after all!
We'll just have to wait I guess. If we see a valuable tech flow to Innovia without reciprocation, then yeah – we'll have to conclude that the Great Merchant was/is being used for something else.
That, or if we see a giant spike in Aloha's gold reserves.
But at this point, it just doesn't look like a trade, because Innovia didn't get anything, and Aloha does have tech to offer them.
