I played with Mali just once, and never finished it. Put me in, I play Vanilla and Warloards.

Hey I'll join in too. Warlords would be best, and I could go with either Monarch or Emperor. I usually do Emperor, but maybe Monarch would be better considering that we're choosing a pretty terrible country.

So how many turns at a time should we do? Maybe something like 15 or 20?

Has anyone else ever done a SG before? My only experience was that Viking one for RoX.

Yeah, and no cheating Rhye. Adding in script counts!

I the England-SG is stoped (or not :) who knows).

I don't like the Mali UHV... it is very boring to put :science: to 0% and wait 100+ turns... =P. ( but i can play for UHV, no problem ).

What about others objetives? Conquer Christian Holy City, Take Egypt, Colonize ALL Africa ( this one is good, mainly because Africa is crapp terrain... so it will be hard ).

Installing Warloards doesn't disable Vanilla, so you can play both. Everybody that play Warloards has Vanilla.

And Can someone say some changes that can interfere in the gameplay between the Warloards Mali and the Vanilla Mali?

Sure thing. First off is the Barbarians. If Egypt falls, which is likely, they can get out of hand until we get a more advanced army. Other than that, just the standard difference between warlords and vanilla: fewer wonders and no UBs. Holy shrines are much more valuable in Vanilla, and would probably help out with the UHV.

Uhm, the land seems difficult from warlords. The capital in Ngazsararasdf is foolish. I'd put it one tile northwest of Waden on the first turn (you can't afford loosing more turns). The third settler on the tile at north of the more eastern elephant.

For me, we should skip Ngazareruarera for later, and build the other cities like I said. In my test, I had no time to build a settler.

Research path: code of laws, civil service. Then 0%, while building a road to Egypt to speed up the second merchant, which gives 1500 gp. The first one is settled in the capital. We need extensive micromanaging

Gunner
Mar 10, 2007, 08:08 PM
I agree that the Ngazareruarera spot should be left for later. I think Riker's suggestions seem more prudent.

Edungeon
Mar 10, 2007, 09:21 PM
Yeah, there is a lot of useless tiles in the capital ( a.k.a. Jungle =P ).

I never tried the UHV, but i believe that Code of Laws ( for Courthouses ) and Civil Service ( for Bureocracy ) is the only needed tech.

Do we plan to build another settler?

Riker

code of laws is for caste system. we'll have no time for a settler, basically we should only build money, trade all our resources and give away all the military as mercs. And I think we'll need a fair amount of luck too

Edungeon

Whitefire
Mar 11, 2007, 12:27 AM
Oops, I meant the capital in Wadan. And we should give no military away as mercs. We'll be fighting a constant invasion from Barbs.

Riker
Mar 11, 2007, 09:06 AM
In warlords, I attacked an independent worker in Iol. That was the only combat in which I was involved(and an Independent trireme parked on one of my water tiles for all the game, annoying)

Whitefire
Mar 11, 2007, 01:27 PM
Yeah, but in Warlords, independents don't attack you. In Vanilla, civs collapse into barbarian cities. So if Egypt collapses and isn't absorbed by Arabia, that's a huge area producing units to throw at anyone in the area.

Gunner
Mar 16, 2007, 11:27 PM
Alright, here's my report. I began at turn 198 and ended on turn 214. My basic plan was to go for the UHV, which I think should still be possible. I followed the previously suggested idea of getting Code of Laws and Civil Service before we go into hyper wealth generation mode. For improvements I concentrated on cottages and mines that make us lots of money.

Things started out well when on turn 201 we were declared the wealthiest by a global survey! Unfortunately, our scientists hadn't yet discovered the technology of taking screenshots. A full scale investigation has been launched as to who was responsible for this oversight :mischief:

We also learned on turn 201 that the Indian civ was destroyed.

Next bit of news came on turn 202, when we had two simultaneous discoveries! The people were a bit confused by the large banners in the streets declaring that we had discovered the art of taking screenshots, considering that they don't know what a screen or a shot is. Code of Laws was, however, easier to grasp and there was much wild partying[party] (oh yeah, birthday style  )
http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/4130/civ4screenshot0000gk1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
We also switched to Caste system and Hereditary Rule on 202.

Turns 204 and 205 saw the founding of Wagadugu (what a great name) and the completion of our first elephant! It think elephants are just about the perfect unit for us for two reasons. One, they have a chance of beating Camel Archers who are going to become real pains for us at some point. They also can be sold as mercenaries for a good amount of money, and for some reason I seem to think that the AI likes to buy them. So going along with this, the elephant was immediately contracted out for mercenary duty.
http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/6082/civ4screenshot0002cg1.th.jpg (http://img337.imageshack.us/my.php?image=civ4screenshot0002cg1.jpg)

On turn 206 our scouting skirmisher met Saladin (we even managed to get a screenshot of it!). Hopefully we'll be able to trade Civil Service to him in a few turns for something. Our skirmisher also discovered that Egypt has been overrun by barbarians. Just to prove that he wasn't faking he decided to get killed by them.
http://img255.imageshack.us/img255/159/civ4screenshot0001tu8.th.jpg (http://img255.imageshack.us/my.php?image=civ4screenshot0001tu8.jpg)

From there things went pretty uneventfully until turn 214. I had been meaning to play 15 turns, but then I lost count. Its tough when you can only check the turn by opening the save menu.

Dawn of a new era

In an unrecorded year Rhye I the Unready rose to power, after the assassination of his predecessor Gunnergu I.

In this dark age the Malinese people lost the knowledge of making screenshots, by the way.

The new king claimed to be no less crazy than Caligula, and ordered the making of a giant mountain of gold, that would make this barren land the envy of the known world. Within just a few years.

Prominent age

The king obtained what he wanted. He was celebrated for his first victory, and no more called the Unready. In this period of wealth, the Malinese kingdom received gifts from the powerful French king, and succesfully repelled barbarian attacks.

(It looks like the French have just captured Vienna. I'll post a screenshot as soon as my servants take it)

Decline (?)

Death and civil war (??)

Just kidding...

How many turns are we playing? 20? 15? 25?

Whitefire
Mar 17, 2007, 05:31 PM
15 seems to be the number we agreed on previously. Since we're not going for the UHV (Maybe a space race win?) this will be a rather long game. I don't mind people fudging and going an extra couple in order to finish taking a city, building a wonder, whatever. It sucks to leave in the middle of something and it sucks even more to have to start playing in the middle of something.

Mowque
Mar 17, 2007, 07:05 PM
yeah, we should be flexaible with turn amounts, we are kinda heading towards a UHV but we won't (IMO) have the disiplince this one requires. i think takeing all of Africa is a good start!

More or less, nothing happened. The only exception being plague striking all throughout Europe but carefully avoiding our holy land.

Gunner

--------

Herein lies the Journal of His Glorious Eminence, Mansa Musa IV The Prosperous. May his glorious reign be accurately recorded and all who speak ill of His Glorious Eminence stand cursed in the name of Allah!

--------

Two years after my birth, my father Mansa Musa III, The Unready, sent me to France. He did so to protect me from the assasins that had killed his previous two children. Little did he know, the Black Death would soon befall Europe. Thankfully, my father had wisely chosen Louis as his confidant. He secluded me in a Benedictine Monastery and I was spared the touch of Death.

Locked in the monastery, safely secluded from the plague, I had little to do but read. By age 5 I had learned Latin. By age 10 I had added French, English, Spanish and several Germanic tongues to my repitoire. With this arsenal of language in my hands, I was able to glean much from the Philosophers and Politicians of Europe. In particular, a young man by the name of Giovanni di Bicci de' Medici. His thoughts on domination through wealth fascinated my natural greedy heart. I decided that I too would rule my nation through gold, not force.

On my 15th birthday, the customary age that my people hold as Manhood, I returned to my homeland of Mali. I was greeted with much love from my parents, shock from the would-be assassins and much celebration from the people since I was the sole heir to survive the slaughter. With my father's abdication of the throne, I set to work reforming the nation.

It was time for our people to abandon our Barbaric roots. I implemented a new system of Bureaucracy in order to better tax*cough*serve the people. While there was resistance to the paperwork at first, it was quickly quelled and Mali prospered.

--------

A young man by the name of Hanno was born in Timbuktu shortly after the revolution. Now a young man, he came to the elder council seeking patronage. He had taken to heart many of the books I had returned with from Europe. He even took the initiative to speak, read and even write Latin. Such initiative was not seen among any of the children of Mali, even the sponsored merchants those embezling demons. May Allah curse them to 10 hells! Amen.

He came, speaking of the value of these clear rocks littering our land. He was certain of the value of these rocks, if only he could sell them in Europe. No amount of reason, heckling or even physical punishment would dissuade him. Seeing much of myself in him I accepted him and commissioned a vessel for Hanno to sail to Europe.

To be honest, I only saw my own greedy heart. That amount of character has always eluded me

This decision was met with shock by the elder council. So much shock, that it left them speechless to object. I ordered Oshogbo to stop farming and collect as many Elephant ribs for the hull of the ship as they could. Meanwhile, Hanno began his solitary effort to gather as many of the clear rocks as he could.

To be honest - honest twice in a day? perhaps Hanno is rubbing off on me - I too had my doubts in Hanno's idea. But I needed an excuse to build a ship so I could visit my second home of France.

--------

Having been many years since my return, and the elders suitably cowed, I took a trip to meet my second father Louis. Upon my arrival in France, I learned that Louis had succumbed to the Black Death himself. His son, Louis, had since assumed the throne. We quickly founded a deep friendship once we discovered our mutual circumstances. Both of us had been raised in a Monastery for our own protection.

With a new life-long friend at the throne of France, I felt confident in securing several agreements with his country. We agreed to mutual open borders to encourage taxation, er, trade. Also, I agreed to ship him the tusks of the many elephants we had been slaughtering in Oshogbo in exchange for badly needed grain and a little gold for the royal coffers.

What value these tusks had I haven't a clue. But the light in Louis's eye upon seeing my necklaces was all the confirmation I needed of their wealth. Perhaps Hanno was on to something.

--------

With the combination of my hiring of state merchants to administer taxes, Hanno's success with his pie-in-the-sky plan and a glut of trading opportunity with France, it was only natural that Merchanting became the new profession. These merchants quickly started claiming cities and trade routes for their own guilds - yet another concept imported from Europe. I was glad to see my people so willingly embracing European mercantilism. I ordered my governors to begin construction on markets in order to better exploituh..ah herm. Facilitate the many new merchants.

--------

Most exciting news today! A distant land named Mongolia came with a contract for our Elephant Mercenary. After seeing the gold they paid us, we ordered the governor of Wagadugu to stop construction of the Grocer and fisnish training a new regiment for contract.

--------

The galley was finally complete at Oshogbo. Hanno's dream, and the security of my family line, were placed into the hold of that ship. Hanno deported with heckles of sailing his ship to the bottom of the ocean. Much to the surprise of the children of Mali, the ship not only floated, but sailed faster than any ship they had seen before. The new sailing I had learned from my last trip to France was put to good use. This day was christened the Folly of Hanno. But that changed when Hanno did not return.

Sadly, I could not visit France and my good friend Louis on this trip. My throne was in a tenuous position over the culmination of my decision and I would not allow my family to be eaten by the ravenous elders. I instead sent a emissary on my behalf. Below is his recount of the events that transpired.

Upon hearing that I would be cursed with traveling upon Hanno's Folly I begged Allah to reveal to me what sin I had commited. It soon became apparent to me that I was not at fault, rather His Glorious Eminence had been possessed. I did not want to believe the rumors, but I could no longer deny it. This order was all the proof I needed.

The Elders could not find enough evidence to way the people before the day of Hanno's folly. I was damned along with the crew. Upon boarding the ship, I immediately ran to my cabin and began praying to Allah to keep us afloat. When thunderous wave of heckling arose outside, I knew we would sail soon. All of the crew was trembling in fear, shackled to their stations by His Glorious Eminence Himself, while I stayed secluded in my cabin. We set sail and thanks to my prayers, we survived.

But this was only the first day, and we had many weeks before we would feel steady land under out feet again.

Today, I began to question the words of the elders.

After weeks of successful avoidance, Hanno trapped me when I was speaking with the navigator. Since I was telling a particularly amusing joke about Hanno collecting stars to sell to the fish, I switched to Latin to finish. Then Hanno complimented me in Latin! I was too shocked to acknowledge his compliment and quickly left to cover my surprise.

How could this barbarian of a man, a holder of the old ways, know Latin? He had never set foot inside the Academy and I had never seen him read a book. All I or anyone else had seen him do is gather his precious glass stones. Yet I could not deny that he not only comprehended my perfect Latin, but responded, albeit it in a rather barbaric grammar. I must think about this.

Just two days ago I had come to fully trust Hanno. Now I know, that is what the Devil was waiting for.

I told him time and again that Spain would not let anyone friendly with Louis to pass through there borders. Especially not to send them a cargo full of goods. But the Devil did not care. He chained the men to their station, locked me in the cabin and sailed the ship through Spainish waters, the depths of the waters.

To my last breath I will curse the name of Hanno and his master Mansa Musa IV, The Devil. May they feel the flames of Judgement for my innocent life.

The end of our journey is at hand. After braving the waters of Spain and the Moors, we safely arrived in Rome. Hanno's assumption that the great ships of Spain would not bother with such a weak vessel.

We have rechristened the Hanno's Folly to The Blessed. And Hanno truly has been blessed. Upon arrival in Rome, we were met by an emissary from France quickly transported us to Paris where we met with Louis. Hanno promptly showed Louis a few stones from our cargo.

If I had not been forewarned, I would never have thought Louis more than a greedy Academy novice after seeing those stones. It turned out that Hanno was right about the diamonds. In return for the diamonds, Louis guaranteed protection of our cargo from thieves and safe passage through Spanish waters on our return to Mali.

While traveling back to Rome to sell the rest of our cargo, we were intercepted by Lorenzo de' Medici, great-great-grandson of Giovanni di Bicci de' Medici and Lord of Florence. He made us an offer that surprised even Hanno. He would pay us twice the weight of the diamonds in gold. Showing himself a merchant that only Mali could spawn, Hanno haggled for 4 times their weight in gold and instructions on a new enterprise the Medici were running.

With such a wealth of gold and knowledge from his Folly, Hanno was sure to become a hero in Mali. But on the day of departure, Hanno informed me that he would be staying in Florence. Giovanni had offered Hanno an offer to travel down the Silk Road and see Mongolia, a land we had heard about so long ago. He wanted to see if our countrymen were still alive and well and explore an new land.

I promise you Hanno, you shall forever be remembered in Mali has The Blessed.

--------

Today, I abdicate my throne. The coffers of Mali have grown threefold in my reign, much due to the work of The Blessed Hanno. With my throne secure, my son, Mansa Musa V, will have new knowledge of Banking from Europe to implement. But that is his worry now. I travel to Italy to finish my days. I hear word of a Renaissance from there, and I do wish to see such beauty before my eyes dim.

--------

tl;dr version

Discovered Guilds and Banking.
Got the Great Merchant, built a Galley.
Sailed to Europe, declared war on Spain, snuck past to Rome.
