Is there any interest here for a Game of the Month (http://gotm.civfanatics.net/games/1st_visit.php) like game based on the starting position of this game?

The idea is that everyone who wants to participate plays the same starting save provided by me. (I'll make sure it resembles the actual game.) Everyone can play the game for themselves (no reloading). You can aim for whatever victory condition you want, and the players with the earliest finish date for each specific condition will be honored.

There will be spoiler threads where you can post your notes and screenshots and where we can compare how different strategies worked out.

(Link (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=203697) to Dave's thread that didn't work out because the save was missing.)

If done I'll play it and post about,if wanted.

That spoiler - show/hide thing I must learn first how to do it.

I may give this a go...if no one is interested we could start some PBEMS like we did the last game.

So how do we play this startign position without compromising the democracy game? Anyone who plays out the save gets to see the map, etc.

I read Similar as:

Mongols + same start settings.

Other then that, nothing's the same.

Cause if we were essentially loading the same Creation save... yeah I'd be against it too.

No, I recall elsewhere that dutchfire stated he would use World Builder to create a save that had a similar start position. We will not be playing off the save from the DG II game.

If that was the case, I'd be against it too.

I'd definitely be interested.

If we're going to do this, would y'all agree it's a good thing to put in a separate subforum, along with PBEMs, a RPG if one gets going, and other stuff not directly related to the DG?

The Mongol people had been Roman slaves for ages. They didn't like the work they had to do, but they respected the Romans for the democratic type of government. However, one day in 4000 BC a Roman general grabbed control of the Roman empire and abolished the democracy. The Mongols didn't like this at all, and they came into action. They were able to conquer Rome and they razed it, and everything reminding them of Roman presence. They decided it was time to move on and control the world for themselves. And they elected you as their leader! So step up and lead them to a glorious future.

This story was just to explain why you can see in-game that you've met the non-existent Romans, I couldn't get this away.

Here's (http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/82/dgc1pf1.png)the starting screenshot, it should look familiar. The starting position is almost the same as the 'normal' game, but almost everything beyond the fat cross is different.

Your Goal: Win the game as fast (in-game) as possible. There will be awards for the fastest finish for every victory condition (conquest, space race, domination, diplomatic, culture and time). For time victory the score will determine the winner, for the other victory conditions score is a tie-breaker in case the finish dates of multiple players are the same.

Rules:
No reloading (You're not allowed to do an action, and then reload to a previous save to do another action instead).
No cheating in any other way.
Don't talk about anything from the game in this thread. There will be a special thread (spoiler thread) opened specially for that.
Deadline: End of April, for now.

149740

Enjoy!

Please send the final save file and the replay file to evldrunen@msn.com when you're finished. That way I'll be able to see who did best and I'll be able to post the final results. You've got plenty of time to do so though.

I have requested the separate forum for RPG and side games.

Would you characterize the focus of this game as just exploring early development options, or carrying it all the way to the end?

dutchfire
Mar 14, 2007, 11:39 AM
Added this:

For time victory the score will determine the winner, for the other victory conditions score is a tie-breaker in case the finish dates of multiple players are the same.

So it carries all the way to the end, mainly because it's hard to see the results of several options earlier in the game, end date pretty much gives you a good idea how good a game is.

I don't really know, but as a lot of people seem to have some time problems, I'd say end of April (1,5 month). If there are many people who can't make that, we could always extend it a bit. Would that be convenient with everyone?

By the way I was looking for this thread in the citizens forum and I couldn't find it until I saw that my spoiler thread had been moved. :goodjob: on the new forum!

So, I started play yesterday until 675 BC, then saved.
I did not take notes, but will try to tell it.
More important, I'll try for my first time that spoiler thing (thanks Methos);
if it fails, I shall try to delete it; if I cannot, some moderator please do itfor me (I know nothing of computers).
Sorry, I failed to the proper computer command.
And just now I guessed the "edit" should delete.
I got the advice in my MSN Hotmail, while I cannot go and answer the message.

I'll open the first spoiler thread sunday. To post in that thread you must have located a strategic resource (iron/copper/horse) and you must have met 3 opponents. You may only post information about the period until you did this in that thread.

Dude, why are you getting so formal with this? Can't we just put stuff in this thread and enclose it in spoiler tags? I'll prolly have lost the game by Sunday and moved on to other things.

For the benefit of newbies, could you say a bit more about the theory here? When will spoilers for more advanced parts of the game be open? Why not allow them all from the start? FWIW, I am a very casual player and have already played this game several times (getting clobbered each time) and I look forward to seeing how better players have managed it. I am using this as an educational experience, not a competition.

Don't look too closely at my spoilers then! I'd like to see how better players handle this as well. Trouble is, if we wait too long many of us will lose interest. I think there's room for us casual players as well as the more competitive players. Besides, we have a whole subforum now so we can play lots of these DG related games and maybe even some DG related PBEM's as well.

This was a great idea dutchfire. :goodjob:

When you are done the post itself will look like this:

Yeah, I thought about it today too, and keeping it more relax is probably better as most people seem to be relaxed about it. Therefor I've opened a spoiler thread (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?p=5210514) now. I would like to have a spoilers in that thread so people who want to play competitve won't see spoiler information against their will.

No, the tag tells the software where to begin using the spoiler tags, and the tells the software where to end the spoiler tags. In other words, you only have to do it at the beginning and ending of whatever you wish to put in the spoiler.

Edit: If you are curious about other tags you can use I suggest checking out this page (http://forums.civfanatics.com/misc.php?do=bbcode).

Thanks for opening the spoiler thread dutchfire. :) I'll post my tale of woe tonight or this weekend.

We should do a casual DG PBEM tournament. If we could get, say sixteen people, we could have four games of four players each all playing on the same map. The four winners could then play another map to determine the champ.

I think it's fair game and can even be a community effort. I'd like to play in it anyway! My PBEM is experience limited. (Actually non-existant for [civ4].) Is there anyone who makes maps like Rik Meleet does for Civ III? Do we need a map made or can we trust the game to make a fair start? We'd need the same save for multiple games. We need a thread or two dedicated to setting it all up. One for people to sign up, another to discuss game settings, etc. I think if we gave all these threads a common label (like DG PBEM Tournament: @@@@@@@@@) we would not need another sub-forum.

What do you think?

No, especially a lack of strategic resources can ruin a game. The only mapmaker I know of is Sirian, but I think Lord Parkin/Emperor has made maps too. We could PM him, I think he'd be willing to make one.

We would not need a sub-forum, we can just use this forum IMO.
