View Full Version : does direct2drive version work with HoF?
KMadCandy Mar 14, 2007, 05:09 AM blah blah cutting to the bottomline, a first for me.
my disk drive is not getting along with my civ4 vanilla and warlords disks. they work for hubby, it's my pc that somehow has a low tolerance and i am frustrated past my limit. i'm going to buy another copy of each, i get enough fun out of the game that the money is worth it. the best solution would be to download from direct2drive so that i don't run into this issue ever again. however, those download versions are slightly different from factory copies (including the patches) because they don't have the disks and don't check for the disks. this is the bonus for my situation. but it has me curious...
does whatever tweak the D2D version has that skips the "check for disk in drive" step have the impact of changing the assets or .dll somehow so that it would be incompatible with the HoF mod? that would of course be a bad thing and a waste of money. i have no idea what about the game is actually changed, it seems the patch numbers are the same (2.08 etc). i wanted to check whether anybody knows, and not just assume. thanks for any info.

That shouldn't impact the mod, but until an existing HOF Mod user (HOF or GOTM) actually posts that the HOF Mods work with their own D2D, we don't 100% know for sure. :(
KMadCandy Mar 14, 2007, 03:07 PM yeah, i thought about the fact that GOTM uses it too after i posted, and wondered if i should ask there too. but chances are slim.
azzaman333 Mar 14, 2007, 08:00 PM You could make an image of your cd, and store the image in a virtual drive.
jeremiahrounds Mar 14, 2007, 10:53 PM i use direct2drive and i have seen that hof mod warning "this game doesnt" or whatever it says for using bad settings such as always war. However once the settings were right there is no such message so i assume that means no issues between d2d and hof mod.
KMadCandy Mar 15, 2007, 03:13 AM awesome! have you turned any in and had them accepted? i see you're trying the major, is it your first?
that is such good news, thank you thank you!
jeremiahrounds Mar 15, 2007, 03:26 AM i have not turned any in. I was going for the current one so ill let you know.

The only issue I would wonder about is the Assets warnings. If you are not getting that you should be good. You know you can login to the Hall of Fame website and use the "Start File" screen to upload a 4000BC file and check your save.
namliaM Mar 15, 2007, 06:01 AM IIRC the only difference is the CD check.
There is (for Warlords) also the (D2D?) non-cd-check patch out there (some place)
KMadCandy Mar 15, 2007, 11:01 AM good luck in your gauntlet jeremiah, even if you hadn't brought me what i hope is good news i'd wish you good luck! ps how rude of me to be so frustrated at this disk drive and focused on ways to fix it that it didn't even occur to me to say 'welcome to HoF!' even tho you're new. shame on me.
it sounds to me like denniz means you can submit a starting file only, not a complete finished game, and the HoF system will know if it sets off any flags; would you mind doing that pretty please? unless of course you've already won a gauntlet game--that'd be even better! as soon as we have a test case of a game file made with the d2d version that the HoF system accepts, then d2d gets some money from me and you get more thank yous :)

Welcome back might be more appropriate, I seem to recall a submission or two very early on...
KMadCandy May 14, 2007, 08:18 AM update: for anyone who wonders in the future, and perhaps does a "search this forum" for direct2drive like i did, we tested it after i broke down and bought it. and the results were (once i remembered to actually load the mod since i wasn't exactly being brilliant at the time :smoke:) just fine, the game was accepted.
so it works :).
